Mole's Progressive Democrat

The Progressive Democrat Newsletter grew out of the frustration of the 2004 election. Originally intended for New York City progressives, its readership is now national. For anyone who wants to be alerted by email whenever this newsletter is updated (usually weekly), please send your email address and let me know what state you live in (so I can keep track of my readership).

    Progressive Democrat Newsletter Issue 270

This is the last newsletter before my vacation. So I try to focus it on things of some lasting value: ongoing boycotts, Green Power, and a couple of the top Congressional races of the year.

Here is a graph I came across that kind of says it all about priorities of the two parties:

Under Republicans the richest get the most. Under Democrats the rich pay their fair share. Simple as that. Of course under Republicans our government goes deeper and deeper into debt to give those big fat tax breaks to the rich.

I should note that one of the top stories this week is one that many of you will not have heard about. Some of you will remember almost exactly a year ago I wrote about my fellow Culture Kitchen blogger Leo Igwe getting attacked by a Christian fundamentalist mob in Nigeria. He was beaten up but came out of it as strong as ever and has continued to fight for reason, human rights and to stop child abuse in Nigeria. Well, this week his family was attacked and his mother and father beaten up. To me Leo is an inspiration. He fights for what is right under conditions far more dangerous than I do. And whenever he is attacked he comes back out fighting. You can read about him and the latest attack on Daily Kos. Please help support him and his work through the links in that article. And you can read some of Leo's articles about Nigeria and Africa on Culture Kitchen.

And for those who have followed my coverage of Homeland Security Presidential Directive #12 from 2007 on, the latest is that the Supreme Court is going to take up the case. I review the case (which directlt affects my wife and is of interest to anyone who is a Federal employee or contractor) and the latest events on Culture Kitchen.

I will leave you with President Obama once again doing the right thing. This time he is defending Social Security against the latest Republican attack:

NY Governor's Race: Republican insanity. Here's the key quote:

Under a Gov. Carl Paladino, political hacks would be swept from the state payroll, Medicaid spending would be slashed by 40 percent and state programs or even entire agencies that are deemed unnecessary would disappear.

Underused prisons would be turned into work camps for welfare recipients.

...yep...that's the insanity of the modern Republican Party right there.
