The Progressive Democrat Newsletter grew out of the frustration of the 2004 election. Originally intended for New York City progressives, its readership is now national. Pennsylvania Focus: Green Power Switch

Here are a couple of programs to help Pennsylvania residents make the switch to green energy. The cost is generally less than 3 cents per kilowatt-hour more than you currently pay for energy. By participating you contribute to reducing carbon emissions, cleaning up Pennsylvania's environment, and stimulating Pennsylvania's economy. Three important ways of helping your local community, local environment and local economy, all for less than 2 cents per kilowatt-hour of energy you use. When my wife and I made a similar switch in New York, we barely noticed the difference in our energy bill. We also switched to compact fluorescent bulbs at the same time and the energy savings reduced our bill by one-third even with the small increase from buying green energy. Together, we reduced our carbon footprint by about 30% while overall saving money. I highly recommend the switch.

    Pennsylvania Energy Cooperative

This looks to be one of the best green energy programs I have seen to date.

    EcoChoice100:
100% renewable electricity from real, local sources

Since 1998, we have been a licensed electric generation supplier (EGS), powering homes and businesses throughout PECO's service territory in and around Philadelphia. Our EcoChoice100 electricity comes from local, renewable, and actually generated sources – not investments in power that isn't being produced yet or that is produced thousands of miles away.

What is The Energy Cooperative Advantage?

100% Renewable: Buying renewable electricity is the single most important action that households and businesses can take to clean our air, land, and water. A single household that switches to 100% renewable electricity has the same impact as planting 126 trees or not driving 13,000 miles.

Local: Rather than buying power produced hundreds or even thousands of miles away, you can source your energy from local providers. Supporting small-scale generators of renewable electricity grows local jobs and the economy.

Real Power, not RECs: You only buy electricity that is being produced right now, rather than simply buying renewable energy credits (RECs) towards future projects. Our power comes from already established wind farms, a low-impact hydroelectric plant in Central PA, and the solar panels on the rooftops of our members.
