Mole's Progressive Democrat

The Progressive Democrat Newsletter grew out of the frustration of the 2004 election. Originally intended for New York City progressives, its readership is now national. For anyone who wants to be alerted by email whenever this newsletter is updated (usually weekly), please send your email address and let me know what state you live in (so I can keep track of my readership).

    Progressive Democrat Issue 189

    Well, we won. Big time.

    Obama even won Virginia (which didn't surprise me at all), North Carolina (which I am not TOO surprised at) and Indiana (which DID surprise me). Obama even won one of Nebraska's electoral votes (which get split). Missouri seems to have barely gone McCain. I was convinced Florida would be stolen again, but the Republican Governor of Florida, though a typical Republican otherwise, seems dedicated to fair elections. And Obama wound up getting almost 53% of the vote.

    If you are like me and you grew up hearing the refrain, "America isn't ready for a black President," you now will never hear that again. America isn't just ready for one, it OVERWHELMINGLY is ready.

    Obama got some 95% of the black vote, 78% of the Jewish vote (more even than Kerry, proving the Republican fear mongering didn't work), 66% of he Hispanic vote (so much for the Republican claims that Hispanics would never vote for a black), 61% of the Asian American vote, and, I think, about 43% of the white vote...which is about the same if not HIGHER than what Kerry, Clinton and Gore got.

    YES, folks, America is ready for a black President.

    In the Senate races you have been hearing from the "pundits" that we didn't do as well as expected. That isn't quite true. First off, few people actually predicted that we would reach 60 Senators. They just hoped we would, and most figured we'd still need Lieberman for that. We have so far picked up about what I expected: 6 new Dem Senators. We picked up New Mexico and Colorado (the twoUdalls), New Hampshire (bye bye Sununu), and Virginia (by a landslide as expected), all of which were expected by even the most pessimistic people. In addition we picked up Oregon (barely and against all early expectations) and North Carolina (bye bye Dole). We actually still have three Senate seats up in the air. In Minnesota the Republican is ahead by only a couple of hundred votes. That close of an election in Minnesota triggers, by law, an automatic recount. Of course the Republicans are calling for the recount to be called off...which would be against the law. Typical Republican disregard for the law. So, AlFranken could still become the Senator from Minnesota, though that is not a given. In Georgia no one got over 50% (there were three candidates running) so it goes into an automatic runoff. PLEASE donate to Jim Martin for Senate. It is really
    a big deal (as I discuss below). No one expected Jim Martin to do so well in Georgia. If we can win, it will be a HUGE repudiation of Karl Rove smear tactics.

    The big surprise is that Alaska was predicted based on polling to throw convicted Republican felon Ted Stevens out on his ass by a wide margin. Turns outAlaskans are FAR more tolerant of corruption than predicted or than they were willing to admit. The race is so close that counting of votes is continuing, but Stevens looked to be winning early on.Bigich may yet win since some of the uncounted votes are from Juneau where he was mayor. But I am AMAZED that so many Alaskans think it is okay to elect an convicted felon to the Senate.

    So, we still have a chance of picking up three more Senate seats. So, keep your fingers crossed and consider donating to one of their campaigns.

    There are also several House seats still unresolved. Including Alaska's House seat where ONCE AGAIN Alaskans are voting for a corrupt Republican (Don Young, under investigation for corruption) over an honest Democrat. But we have definitely picked up many seats, including the ID-1 seat!

    North Carolina was the biggest shift to blue of the year. President, Senate, and one House seat (Larry Kissell) picked up from Republicans in North Carolina. AND we held on to the North Carolina Governor's office (against many predictions). Virginia has been shifting blue since 2005. Now North Carolina is following a similar shift.

    By the way, Joy and I found we got sucked into the Rachel Maddow show and Keith Olbermann shows on MSNBC. I had heard they were good, and had heard Rachel Maddow on Air America radio back in 2004. But I had gotten so out of the habit of watching any of the mainstream media that we never bothered to try them out. Finally we started watching and they are great. Highly recommended. Seems to me MSNBC is the first network to realize that the Fox News style is out of fashion now and have shifted their coverage to being more balanced. And it is showing in the ratings. Fox News has seen its profits plumment, and their stock recently tanked. I am sure they will continue because they have a rabidly faithful following of right wing nut cases. But MSNBC is poised to surpass them and Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann are leading the way in popularity on MSNBC.

    Long road ahead of us. The mess the Republicans have made over the past 7 years is quite daunting. This is the worst mess, both in terms of domestic AND foreign policy, that I have seen in my lifetime. But it is NOT by any means the worst mess this nation has been in. After all, think of the horrible mess the Republicans got us into in the 1920's which then had to be cleaned up by FDR. We are facing hard times, but with good leadership (which we now will have!) we can make it through. What we have to get beyond is the stupid Republican insanities like "drill, baby, drill" and trickle down economics (called "Voodoo economics" by Bush's father...called looting America by some economists) and "bomb, bomb, bomb Iran."

    I will be cutting back on the number of states I cover. It has grown to some 20 states and takes a fair amount of time. There are really 5 states where most of my readers are (NY, CA, GA, AZ and CO) with about another 5 where I have pretty good readership. Most of the others I get occasional hits, but not lots and I may start cutting back on those. If you are a regular reader, please let me know so I can keep at least some coverage of that state. And recruiting some new readers in your area would also help. Not sure how many states I will keep going, but at least 10.

    Nine Congressional Races Unresolved: Help out!

    From Democracy for America:

    Barack is already preparing to be our next President, but there are 9 Congressional races around the country that have yet to be settled.

    These campaigns still need our help.

    In 2000, we lost the election when the Bush campaign beat us in the legal and media fight that followed. In 2004, we had to force a recount in the Washington State Governor's race and we won because you delivered the resources to make it happen.

    We need to raise at least $40,000 by Monday to back up these races with the resources they need right now.

    CONTRIBUTE $50 TO THE DFA COUNT EVERY VOTE FUND

    In 2004, we raised over $250,000 for the Washington State recount. This year, we need $40,000 right now to keep the GOP dirty tricks at bay and make sure every vote is counted fairly.

    DFA's Grassroots All-Star Charlie Brown needs resources to fend off a team of Republican lawyers who, as I write this message, are challenging every Democratic ballot before the FIRST count has even been completed. Charlie is down by less than 500 votes with over 15,000 votes still to be counted. He needs our help to make sure every vote is counted.

    DFA-List Senate candidates Mark Begich and Al Franken are fighting back Republican dirty tricks to challenge uncounted votes. And other DFA-List candidates for Congress including Bill Hedrick in CA-44 and Mary Jo Kilroy in OH-15 need our help to make sure that every vote is counted in their races.

    We've all seen this before. When we don't give up and we fight tooth and nail for every vote: We win.

    CONTRIBUTE $50 RIGHT NOW TO PROTECT OUR VOTES

    We can take these races across the finish line. But we need to act fast.

    Thank you for everything you do.

    Progressive Majority Does it Again

    Progressive Majority's mission is to elect the progressive leaders of the future. They accomplish this by identifying and recruiting young progressive leaders to run for office; coaching and supporting their candidacies by providing strategic message, campaign, and technical support; prioritizing the recruitment and election of candidates of color; and bringing new people into the political process at all levels.

    Once again Progressive Majority has a successful year. Here is their statement regarding their victories yesterday:

    The message couldn't be clearer: voters wanted progressive change. They elected an outstanding progressive as the next president. They put Democrats solidly in control of the Congress. And, they elected 79 great Progressive Majority candidates to state and local office! More results will be coming in as the votes continue to be counted.

    The state and local champions Progressive Majority helped elect yesterday will ring in a new era of leadership committed to our progressive values - and they will be a formidable ground force to enact the change we need.

    Progressive Majority is the only national organization focused solely on recruiting and electing progressive majorities at the state and local levels. As a supporter, yesterday's wins are yours to celebrate too...

    As the premier candidate recruitment operation for the progressive Democratic movement, we paved the way for many of yesterday's victories. Most notably, we:

    * Took control of the Wisconsin Assembly.
    * Took control of the Ohio House of Representatives.
    * Elected a veto-proof super-majority in the Washington State House.
    * Increased our ranks in the Minnesota State House, Arizona Legislature and California Assembly.
    * Held Democratic majorities in the Colorado House and the Pennsylvania House.
    * Flipped control of at least six local governments.

    While many races are still too close to call, we're thrilled with these key victories. We'll keep you updated as we continue to expand our progressive wins across America.

    In all, we put progressive Democrats in control in six of the eight states we're in! We made gains in every state where we work. We showed that progressives can win in the toughest districts in the toughest states in the country.

    In a year when pundits predicted Democrats could only gain control of a few new state legislatures, Progressive Majority was key to winning two:

    Wisconsin
    Wisconsin was decidedly a "toss up" state right up until Election Day. Yet, we out-organized our opponents and helped 12 Progressive Majority candidates score stunning victories to take control of the Wisconsin Assembly. This victory was the culmination of Progressive Majority's five-year strategy to take control of both chambers of the Wisconsin Legislature and put Democrats in control of redistricting. Click here for complete Wisconsin election results.

    Ohio
    Progressive Majority emerged victorious in Ohio, another "toss up" state where the state races were overshadowed by the national elections. A remarkable seven, and possibly eight, of our candidates won and secured the Democratic takeover of the state House of Representatives. Click here for complete Ohio election results.

    So far, 79 Progressive Majority candidates in our eight states have won outright and 12 are in races still too close to call. Click here for complete election results of Progressive Majority candidates.

    We continue to elect majorities where they matter most – school boards and city councils, mayoral positions and statehouses.

    We can't do this without your help, and our work is not finished. Click here to make a secure donation to Progressive Majority and help us recruit, train and elect the progressive leaders of 2009, 2010, 2011 and beyond.

    With your help, we won't stop until we've swept every last conservative from the corridors of power.

    Sincerely,

    Gloria A. Totten

    Progressive Majority

    PS - In just five short years, Progressive Majority has helped flip control of six state legislatures, 36 local governments and three statewide positions. Help us maintain the momentum by making a donation now!

    Progressive Majority is one of the most successful progressive grassroots organizations around, averaging about a 50% success rate in past years. They are electing the next generations of leaders.

    Jewish Vote Overwhelmingly for Obama

    From the National Jewish Democratic Council:

    With your help, the Jewish community voted overwhelmingly for Barack Obama.

    We are proud that Obama captured 78% of the Jewish vote, according to exit polls. Despite all the hype that Jewish voters would flock to John McCain, these polls show that McCain only received 21% of the Jewish vote.

    This was a decisive election; we sent a clear message regarding the differences between the Obama platform and the policies of President Bush and McCain.

    With Obama's victory, we selected a candidate who shares the values of the vast majority of American Jews, including the separation of church and state, a strong U.S.-Israel relationship, and reproductive freedom.

    Election after election for the last 36 years, Republicans have persisted in asserting that their nominee would gain a significant portion of the Jewish vote. Supporters of McCain engaged in an unprecedented anti-Obama campaign in the Jewish community. After spending millions of dollars on an ad campaign filled with misinformation and smears, Jewish Republicans once again could not sway Jewish voters.

    With your help, NJDC was able to combat the disgraceful Republican campaign of lies and smears.

    We are glad to see the dawning of a new era in American politics after the last eight years of the disastrous Bush administration. We look forward to the swearing in of President-elect Obama and will keep you informed about Inauguration activities.

    Thanks again,

    Ira N. Forman

    Indigenous Democratic Network's Successes on Nov. 4th

    The Indigenous Democratic Network (INDN) is the only grassroots political organization devoted to recruiting and electing Native American candidates and mobilizing the Indian Vote throughout America on behalf of those candidates. INDN's List was officially launched Feb 28, 2005, in Washington DC in conjunction with the National Congress of American Indians Annual Meeting. We are dedicated to making a unified Indian voice heard at the local, state and national levels by helping Indians build and run effective campaign organizations and to win elected offices across America.

    Their Stated Agenda:

    * Economic Justice: Prosperity should be accessible to everyone, not merely the few.

    * Civil Rights: Every individual's civil rights must be protected; discrimination and harassment based on race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or physical and developmental ability should be banned.

    * Health Care: Every individual should have affordable, quality health care.

    * Education: It is essential that we invest in quality public education for all.

    * Environment: We must commit to restoring and protecting our environment.

    * Reproductive Freedom: Women and men - not politicians - deserve the right to make personal decisions about their reproductive health in accordance with their own personal and moral beliefs.

    Yesterday, INDN helped win several key races, and boost the representation of Native Americans in our government.

    Their statement:

    INDN's List made history this year with 23 American Indian candidates from 11 states and 17 tribes won their state and local elections, which we could not have done without your support.

    Denise Juneau (Three Affiliated Tribes), who is the first American Indian woman elected to statewide office in Montana and only the third tribal member ever elected statewide, is the Superintendent of Public Instruction-Elect in Montana, winning 50.68% of the vote, with 99% of precincts reporting. Denise and her staff attended INDN Campaign Camp in 2007, where she was trained on all aspects of campaigning. Throughout the campaign, Juneau faced down anti-Indian rhetoric, and was the first Indian woman to run state wide and face anti-Indian scorn.

    We told you about her opponent dismissing her as a "young Indian," and you responded. Your financial support helped her get out her positive message to the people of Montana, and yesterday, they responded.

    This is not just an historic year for America, but for Indian Country as we elected more tribal members to state and local office than ever before. In 2006, we elected 20 American Indians, and in 2008 we elected 23. Because of our efforts at INDN's List, tribal members are engaged at all levels of government in an unprecedented manner.

    Your help and support made history in Indian Country, and in elected offices across our country.

    In the South Dakota State House, two Campaign Camp alumni, Kevin Killer and Ed Iron Cloud III, won both seats in District 27, gaining Democratic seats there. They both attended INDN Campaign Camp 2007, and they are both enrolled members of the Oglala Sioux Tribe.

    In Pennsylvania, Barbara McIlvaine Smith (Sac & Fox) won after being targeted by Republicans. She won the seat narrowly in 2006, when we first endorsed her, and flipped control of the PA State House to the Democrats. Last night, she was victorious again.

    Todd Gloria (Tlingit-Haida) won his San Diego City Council race at the age of 30, becoming the youngest member on the Council, and giving Democrats a 5-3 advantage.

    With winners in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Montana, Nevada, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Washington and Wyoming, and 23 out of 37 endorsed candidates winning, INDN's List has an impressive 69% total win rate because of you.

    By assisting American Indians with achieving elected office, we are ensuring that issues that affect Indian Country are heard in state legislatures, city halls, and county jails and courthouses across the country.

    It was a bittersweet evening as not all of our candidates were successful. We have tremendous respect for our first time INDN candidates who challenged Republican incumbents but came up short.

    Our hearts are particularly heavy as we lost 2 excellent advocates for Indian Country, with the losses of Representative Scott BigHorse in Oklahoma and Representative Don Barlow in Washington. They will be deeply missed in their state's legislative chambers. Scott and Don have been champions of progressive causes and outstanding role models and leaders for all of Indian Country. Unfortunately, they were attacked and defeated for being just that. If they stand again, INDN's List will proudly stand with them.

    Together, we made history. Together, we helped twenty-three American Indians achieve victory. Together, we will do even more in two years...

    Sincerely,

    Kalyn Free

    Norman Siegel Confronts Tsar Bloomberg on Term Limits

    And now back to the term limits battle. Yes, that's right Tsar Bloomberg and your trained Surrender Monkeys (Christine Quinn, Dominc Recchia, David Yassky and the rest of the Bloomberg 29), we aren't forgetting your disrespect of the voters of NYC. Remember, the fight is NOT about term limits per se. It is whether it is right for Bloomberg and the City Council to completely disregard two votes of the people that overwhelmingly supported term limits. It is also not about the economy. Bloomberg led our city WHILE the economy collapsed, why does he think he can lead us out of it if he so far has shown no real leadership in the crisis. This is about protecting your vote against arbitrary actions by politicians.

    Norman 's statement at City Hall on Monday, November 3rd, prior to the Mayor's signing of the bill extending term limits.

    Mr. Mayor, where I grew up in Brooklyn we were taught that whenever we were critical of someone we were to tell them why we disagreed with them face to face. So, this morning I will respectfully do exactly that.

    I love New York City. I also love the principles and values associated with a democratic society. By extending term limits by legislative fiat on October 23, 2008, you and the City Council Speaker along with 28 other members of the City Council trampled on those precious principles. I and other New Yorkers will not be silent in opposition to your undoing the People’s will.

    It did not have to be this way. You could have and should have raised the issue of extending term limits through a public referendum. But you chose not to do that. I believe you made a huge mistake in judgment. You exhibited a disrespect for the will of the people of this great city.

    You still have an opportunity to reevaluate your approach by not signing the legislation before you and supporting a public referendum on this issue.

    The question of whether the New York City Council can override two public referenda on term limits is an open legal one under the First and Fourteenth amendments of the United States Constitution, the New York City Charter and New York’s Municipal Home Rule Law. The Council’s vote on October 23 will not go unchallenged.

    Mr. Mayor, I know you care about your legacy. Your recent actions and what I fear you are about to do today by extending term limits by legislative enactment will tarnish that legacy. History does not treat people who go back on their word kindly. Again, it does not have to be this way. There is an alternative. It’s a public referendum. It’s the People’s will. It’s called democracy.

    The Bloomberg Putsch has been rubber stamped by the NY City Council, leading to considerable outrage, particularly against Councilman Yasssky whose convoluted flip flopping disgusted many even in clubs like Independent Neighborhood Democrats which used to be one of his bastions of support. But what is even more disgusting were the thuggish tactics used by wannabe Tsar Bloomberg and his Director of the Gendarmes Christine Quinn. NEW YORK BLOGGING:
    The Albany Project gives excellent coverage of New York State politics.

    The Daily Gotham covers both New York City (with a slight emphasis on Brooklyn) and New York State politics.

    Reform NY is the blog of the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law

    On NY Turf is run by someone I know. Long overdue that I add his blog here. Contains political info, good map resources for NYC and discussions of development issues.

    Let me highlight some excellent candidates running in New York in 2009:

    Norm Siegel for Public Advocate
    For those of you who live in NYC, let me introduce you to Norman Siegel, one of America's top Civil Rights Lawyers, is running for New York Public Advocate. Here's a Youtube video of him:

    Josh Skaller for City Council. A progressive who is coming in second in fundraising, Josh is considered a serious contender by several pragmatic allies I have talked to and has been endorsed by State Senator Eric Adams. Josh may well become the frontrunner if he keeps it up. Josh is a good friend of ours, a solid progressive, and about as honest as you can get. Josh will be one of my top priorities in 2009!

    Here are a handful of Democratic Clubs worth checking out:

    The Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats is a community-based Democratic club. CBID has fought for reform and progressive causes since 1968. As a Brooklyn-based Club, we have been instrumental in the election of many candidates for public office. Much of this success was a result of our question-and-answer forums with prospective candidates as well as our extensive on-the-street contact with our constituents.

    Staunchly opposed to political corruption, we are proud of our independence and our commitment to progressive reform in city, state and national politics. We are a vehicle for citizen empowerment and making government more accountable to our neighborhoods.

    We meet monthly, usually the fourth Thursday evening of the month in the basement of the Park Slope United Methodist Church, on the corner of 6th ave and 8th street, at 7:30pm. All are welcome.

    New Kings Democrats (”NKD”) is a new, grassroots organization in Kings County (Brooklyn), New York whose primary mission is to recruit and prepare individuals to run for Kings County Democratic Committee. NKD hopes to achieve the goal of an inclusionary and participatory democracy by making it easy for individuals to run for local, elected office. NKD will serve as a training ground for individuals seeking higher office, and hopes to build and nurture a new group of Brooklyn Democratic leaders.

    CALIFORNIA FOCUS: Blogs, Alternative Energy, Groups and Events

    I will begin with election results, move on to the fight to stop homophobia in California, and then cover blogging, groups and events.

    First the race still up the air. We have one race in California that is still being counted and probably recounted:

    Your a Good Man Charlie Brown! Charlie Brown for CA-4

    Lt. Col. Charlie Brown is running for the CA-4 Congressional seat. Brown has a distinguished service record:

    After graduating in 1972, he began a distinguished 26-year Air Force career during which he was involved in every U.S. military conflict from Vietnam to Desert Storm.

    As a rescue helicopter pilot based in Thailand at the end of the Vietnam War, Charlie participated in the evacuations of Saigon, Phnom Penh, and the infamous Mayaguez Incident—for which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. In Vietnam, he saw the human cost of faulty equipment and bad intelligence up close. It’s a lesson he’s never forgotten.

    After the war, Charlie transitioned to fixed wing aircraft and working with intelligence collection assets. He piloted reconnaissance missions in support of combat operations in Grenada, Panama, Lebanon, and Libya, and flew Cold War related missions around the world. After the first Gulf War, Charlie served two rotations in Saudi Arabia, where he coordinated surveillance flights over Iraq’s “No Fly Zones.”

    Charlie Brown has been endorsed by:

    Veterans Press, Veterans Vision, Chico Enterprise-Record/Oroville Mercury-Register, Chico News & Review, Esquire Magazine, Modoc Record, Sacramento Bee, Alliance for Retired Americans, International Association of Firefighters, Local 522, 4409 and 3809, National Farmers Union (NATFARM), Roseville Firefighters Union Local 1592, General Wesley Clark, VoteVets.org PAC, and many others.

    Next, all the races I endorsed in California we won (NOTE: I wound up highlighting two candidates running for the same seat...one of them won). Here are the candidates I endorsed.

    Here is a candidate endorsed by the Indigenous Democratic Network (INDN List):

    Commissioner Todd Gloria
    Candidate for San Diego City Council
    Enrolled Member of Tlight-Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska

    Todd Gloria WON!

    Here is a list of Progressive candidates running in California worth your support (all endorsed by Progressive Majority):

    Marty Block
    Candidate for State Assembly - District 78 (Open Seat)
    San Diego County

    Marty Block WON!

    Mark Ridley-Thomas
    Candidate for Los Angeles County Supervisor - District 2 (Challenger)

    Ridley-Thomas WON!

    Bob Blumenfield
    Candidate for State Assembly - District 40 (Open Seat)
    Los Angeles, Northridge, Van Nuys

    Bob Bloomfield WON!

    Richard Barrera
    Candidate for San Diego Board of Education - Subdistrict D (Challenger)

    Richard Barrera WON!

    Sherri Lightner
    Candidate for San Diego City Council - District 1 (Open Seat)

    Sherri Lightner WON!

    Stephen Whitburn
    Candidate for San Diego City Council - District 3 (Open Seat)

    Whitburn lost, but I should note I wound up highlighting both Whitburn AND his opponent Todd Gloria (endorsed by INDN list). Gloria won.

    John Lee Evans
    Candidate for San Diego Board of Education - Subdistrict A (Challenger)

    John Lee Evans WON!

    The bad news is in the propositions. Although we won the Yes on Prop 1A and the No on Prop 4 fights, we lost the No on Props. 8, 11 and 5 fights.

    Proposition 8 is among the worst results in California. It is, basically, a homophobic Hate Amendment that lets government define whether the love between two people is legitimate. There is now a backlash against those who led in the movement to pass this hateful amendment. Among the leaders of this year's movement to discriminate against gays was the Mormon Church. Once again right wing religious fanatics want to force THEIR religion on American society. This is one more example of the American Taliban trying to marginalize anyone they see as different.

    For those who doubt the extremist aspects of the Mormon Church (though of course not all Mormons), read Jon Krakauer's book, Under the Banner of Heaven.

    There is a backlash. It is the kind of left wing backlash that seldom gets much momentum, but when it does, it can have a powerful effect. Over at Daily Kos there is a list of businesses that endorsed Proposition 8. These are businesses that should be targeted for economic pressure. On the left suggestions like this often cause consternation. Truth is, boycotts DO WORK when enough people get pissed off enough to actually do them. The California grape boycott was a long term effort that finally worked. The anti-Apartheid boycotts were often vague and irregularly carried out...but in the end they were part of what worked. Here is the list of targets for actual economic pressure:

    Also over at Daily Kos there is a diary listing Mormon businesses. These are not necessarily endorsers of the homophobic propositions that have been enacted in several states. But they are members of the religious organization that led to fight to marginalize approximately 10% of Americans. These businesses are good targets for establishing a dialogue regarding this proposition and urging them to condemn theHate Amendment. Some may well be right wing nut cases, like Diebold. THEY should be boycotted. Others should not but rather should be part of an effort to talk to people about why marriage equality is fair and a good thing for American society. So here is a list of companies to look into and TALK to about marriage equality.

    * Affiliated Computer Services
    * AES Corp.
    * Avista Corp.
    * American Express
    * Black & Decker
    * Cadence Design
    * Corvis
    * Central Pacific Bank
    * 1-800-Contacts
    * Cygnus Inc.
    * Diebold
    * Dell Computer
    * Dionex
    * Downey Savings and Loan
    * EarthShell
    * Franklin Covey
    * Hillenbrand Industries
    * Headwaters, Inc.
    * Hollywood Entertainment
    * Host Marriott
    * Iomega
    * JP Realty
    * Key Corp.
    * Knight Transportation
    * K-Swiss, Inc.
    * La Quinta Properties, Inc.
    * Marriott International
    * Micrel Semiconductor
    * Micro General
    * Merit Medical Systems
    * Monaco Coach
    * Microsemi Corp.
    * Myriad Genetics
    * Novell
    * NPS Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
    * NuSkin
    * Oil States International
    * Oakley
    * priceline.com Inc.

    * Ryder Systems
    * SkyWest Airlines
    * Swift Transportation
    * Cornerstone REIT
    * Tropical Sportswear
    * Williams Companies, Inc.
    * Zions Bancorp

    If you boycott a company...TELL them you are boycotting. If you contact a company and receive a reply, even just a form letter, write back. Keep up the dialogue. Make a follow up phone call. TALK to people. It can make the difference, if not now, maybe 2, 5 or 10 years from now.

    Undirected anger does nothing. Anger carefully directed can be a powerful tool in changing the world. If this list helps you focus your anger, then please make use of it.

    GEORGIA FOCUS: Blogs, Jim Martin, Alternative Energy, Veterans For Peace, NAACP, Groups and Events

    The Georgia Senate Race is STILL not decided and is will head into a runoff election. This race is not just another important pick up opportunity. It is a matter of honor both for Democrats and for Vietnam Vets.

    This year Georgia has the opportunity not only to elect a fine Democrat, Jim Martin, to the Senate, but also to right a wrong committed by Republicans 6 years ago. Jim Martin is running against Republican Saxby Chambliss who ran a sleazy, nasty smear campaign against Vietnam War hero and disabled Veteran Max Cleland. Saxby Chambliss, in comparison to Max Cleland's war record, was given five student deferments and he received a medical deferment for a bad knees due to a football injury. So Chickenhawk Chambliss smeared a genuine war hero, Max Cleland to win a Senate seat.

    Now Democrat Jim Martin, also Vietnam Veteran, is running to defeat Chickenhawk Chambliss. Here is the latest ad from Jim Martin's campaign:

    Jim Martin has been endorsed by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

    In his almost six years in the U.S. Senate, Saxby Chambliss has built a reputation as a loyal defender of President Bush and his policies and as a champion of corporate interests.

    The people of Georgia now have to decide whether that’s the senator they want for the next six years as well...

    [Jim] Martin, a University of Georgia graduate who volunteered to serve his country in Vietnam, has pitched his campaign at his opponent’s weak spot by focusing on protecting the middle class. He advocates lower taxes on the middle class, stronger consumer protection laws and an end to corporate welfare. He has also criticized Chambliss’ vote on the Wall Street rescue package, a position that frankly smacks of political opportunism.

    However, Martin has a long record of public service in the state Legislature, where he earned respect from Democrats and Republicans alike for his intelligence and willingness to buck party leaders if necessary. He was appointed by Gov. Roy Barnes, a fellow Democrat, to head the Department of Human Resources, and was asked to remain in that post when Republican Gov. Sonny Perdue took office.

    He is what he seems like, a smart guy who wants to help his fellow Georgians and doesn’t care who gets the credit...

    Overall...the best candidate is Martin. In what look to be six difficult years ahead, he would do well for the people of Georgia.

    Jim Martin has also been endorsed by the Macon Telegraph.

    Jim Martin is the best choice for Georgia. But it goes beyond this. To me, defeating Saxby Chambliss is a matter of honor as well because of how he "won" the Senate seat through smearing a good man and, quite likely, through fraud. A win for Jim Martin would not only replace a Bush Republican with someone who is more loyal to the people of Georgia than to the failed Bush policies, but also would restore the honor of Georgia.

    Six years ago Republican Saxby Chambliss won the Georgia Senate race through a sleazy smear campaign against Vietnam War Hero and disabled Veteran Max Cleland. Chambliss ran one of the nastiest campaigns I have ever seen and the fact that he called the loyalty of a decorated war hero into question added to my disgust. Even fellow Republicans John McCain and Chuck Hagel were disgusted by Saxby Chambiss' sleaze campaign.

    But it also appears Chambliss won at least partly due to election fraud. According to Republican cybersecurity expert Stephen Spoonamore, formerly an adviser to Sen. John McCain, investigated a computer patch that was installed PERSONALLY by Diebold CEO Bob Urosevich in just two counties, DeKalb and Fulton, both Democratic strongholds. From Raw Story:

    A leading cyber-security expert and former adviser to Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) says he has fresh evidence regarding election fraud on Diebold electronic voting machines during the 2002 Georgia gubernatorial and senatorial elections.

    Stephen Spoonamore is the founder and until recently the CEO of Cybrinth LLC, an information technology policy and security firm that serves Fortune 100 companies. At a little noticed press conference in Columbus, Ohio Thursday, he discussed his investigation of a computer patch that was applied to Diebold Election Systems voting machines in Georgia right before that state's November 2002 election.

    Let me just say here that I publicized some Democrats who called attention to this same computer patch back in 2002. No one listend back then. But maybe a major Republican IT expert can finally get some attention to this issue. More from the same article:

    Spoonamore is one of the most prominent cyber-security experts in the country. He has appeared on CNN's Lou Dobbs and ABC's World News Tonight, and has security clearances from his work with the intelligence community and other government agencies, as well as the Department of Defense, and is one of the world’s leading authorities on hacking and cyber-espionage...

    Spoonamore received the Diebold patch from a whistleblower close to the office of Cathy Cox, Georgia’s then-Secretary of State. In discussions with RAW STORY, the whistleblower -- who wishes to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation -- said that he became suspicious of Diebold's actions in Georgia for two reasons. The first red flag went up when the computer patch was installed in person by Diebold CEO Bob Urosevich, who flew in from Texas and applied it in just two counties, DeKalb and Fulton, both Democratic strongholds. The source states that Cox was not privy to these changes until after the election and that she became particularly concerned over the patch being installed in just those two counties.

    The whistleblower said another flag went up when it became apparent that the patch installed by Urosevich had failed to fix a problem with the computer clock, which employees from Diebold and the Georgia Secretary of State’s office had been told the patch was designed specifically to address.

    The article goes on to discuss probable Republican fraund in Ohio in 2004.

    Saxby Chambliss: a dishonorable Bush Republican who even Republicans think cheated and lied his way into office.

    Jim Martin: an honorble Veteran respected by both Democrats and Republicans. You can learn more about Jim Martin at his website.

    ARIZONA FOCUS: Blogs, Alternative Energy, Veterans for Peace, Groups and Events

    Most states where I endorsed candidates, most of them won. In Arizona very few did. In fact, only two did. Here they are:

    Senator Albert Hale
    Candidate for Arizona State Senate, Senate District 2
    Enrolled Member of the Navajo Nation

    Hale WON with 73% of the vote.

    Pat Fleming
    Candidate for State Representative - District 25 (Open Seat)
    Bisbee, Douglas, Gila Bend, Marana, and Nogales

    Pat Fleming WON!

    I should also note that two other candidates I endorsed won in earlier elections:

    Corey Woods
    Candidate for Tempe City Council - At Large (Challenger)
    WE WON!!!

    Progressive Majority candidate Corey Woods made history this May, when he became the first African-American elected to Corey Woodsthe Tempe, Arizona City Council in its 114-year history!

    Corey's election, along with the election of fellow Democrat Joel Navarro, also power-shifts the Tempe City Council to a progressive majority!

    Marquisha Griffin
    Candidate for Maricopa City Council - At Large (Challenger)
    WE WON!!!

    We won this seat in May as well!
