    Progressive Democrat Issue 182

Three major financial institutions shipwrecked this week, leading to a meltdown in the markets. Was anyone surprised? Many of us saw this coming months ago. The longer you have failed Republican economic policies, the worse the economy will become. It is that simple. Even Alan Greenspan is saying Bush and McCain are wrong on the economy.

Yep...It's STILL the economy, Stupid. But the Republicans have never been good for the economy in the long run and they have never learned their lesson.

Hurricane Ike hit and ONCE AGAIN the Republicans have failed American citizens in trouble. People were left without help as FEMA screwed up again. Once again Bush and McCain do nothing, NOTHING, while Americans go without food, water, and electricity for days. ONCE AGAIN, the Republicans failed to adequately heed warnings and prepare for a disaster. They failed to learn the lessons of Katrina...or they just plain didn't care.

I am going to continue to push a few ideas from last week. First, I want to urge my readers to take some time and help our friends in North Carolina elect Kay Hagen to the US Senate right from your home. This is the kind of project that won big in 2006. Let's repeat the same success in 2008. Winning North Carolina is important in four ways. There is a close House race (Larry Kissell), a close and ever-tightening Senate race (Kay Hagen), a close governor's race (Bev Perdue), and there is a shot at Obama winning the state. Some effort now could have huge results in November.

Another way you can help is virtual phone banking for Jill Derby for Congress in Nevada:

You call the voter and read the easy-to-follow phone script, record the responses of the voter and click ENTER. The information is automatically recorded in the
campaign’s database. If you reach an answering machine or voice mail, you can leave a short message for the voter. Make as many calls as you can and if you finish them all, you can sign up for more.

Questions? Want to organize your friends as a team to call for Jill? Call Derby for Congress Field Director Julie Wedge at 775-770-2008.

Nevada and North Carolina are critical swing states, so both efforts are important.

And once again, I leave you with a button I heard about while getting out the vote in the NYC primary:

Jesus Christ was a Community Organizer
    Pontius Pilate was a Governor

    Blatant Republican Racism

I have covered many amazingly disgusting examples of Republican racism and anti-Semitism over the years.

Not too long ago there was an idiot bar owner in Cobb Co. Georgia who made T-shirts with a picture of Curious George (registered trademark of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) eating a banana with the caption "Obama '08." When confronted by some uppity civil rights groups the bar owner insisted he wasn't racist. From a Daily Kos article because the original newspaper article keeps crashing Firefox:

The T-shirts are being peddled by Marietta bar owner Mike Norman at his Mulligan's Bar and Grill in Cobb County. They show a picture of Curious Georgie peeling a banana, with the words "Obama '08" underneath.

    ...

Norman acknowledged the imagery's Jim Crow roots but said he sees nothing wrong with depicting a prominent African-American as a monkey.

Of course this fool got slapped down by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for copyright infringement and generally being an a racist idiot:

Rick Blake, a spokesman for publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, which owns Curious George, said Wednesday that the company didn't authorize the use of the character's image, but hasn't been in touch with anybody selling or manufacturing the shirts.

"We find it offensive and obviously utterly out of keeping with the value Curious George represents," Blake said. "We're monitoring the situation and weighing our options with respect to legal action."

Now we have another example of stupid, racist Republican "humor." The ill-named American Values and Focus on the Family Action Forum (a group which seems unAmerican and displays terrible values) sells "Obama Waffles" with several racial stereotypes. From this article:

Obama is portrayed with popping eyes and big, thick lips as he stares at a plate of waffles and smiles broadly.

Placing Obama in Arab-like headdress recalls the false rumor that he is a follower of Islam, though he is actually a Christian.

On the back of the box, Obama is depicted in stereotypical Mexican dress, including a sombrero, above a recipe for "Open Border Fiesta Waffles" that says it can serve "4 or more illegal aliens." The recipe includes a tip: "While waiting for these zesty treats to invade your home, why not learn a foreign language?"

Wow, insulting blacks, Muslims and Hispanics all in one shot. I guess the Republican Party has abandoned all attempts to reach out to the true diversity of America. I guess they have embraced intolerance wholeheartedly. What is with Republicans? How can they think this kind of adolescent racism is okay? This is a forum attended by the likes of Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney and they are engaging in blatant racism.

And speaking of Republican Racism, here's an article from an Arizona blog that is apropos: McCain and the Race Card - The Corporate Media's Role. And let's remember McCain opposed the Martin Luther King, jr. holiday. For those who want to read more about Republican racism, I've discussed it here (from before Obama won the primary), and it is covered in Drew Westin's book The Political Brain with some pretty nasty examples.

To quote Drew Westen's book, The Political Brain:

Since the mid-1960's, the party of Lincoln has desecrated his memory. Republicans have opposed every effort to extend equal rights to anyone who isn't white. They have played the race card in every presidential election they have won since 1968. As long as Democrats don't turn racism into a character issue, Republicans will continue to use it as an instrument of political persuasion.

Remember Trent Lott's glowing, gushing, loving speech about Strom Thurmond's 1948 presidential run. Remember, that Trent Lott was the LEADER of the Republican Senate, yet he said that had Strom Thurmond won the presidency in 1948, America wouldn't have the problems it has today.

What was the focus of Thurmond's run for presidency? His central platform was segregation, upholding the "right" of, in his words, "Southern People" to keep "niggers" out of "our theaters...swimming pools...homes and...churches." Trent Lott in 2002 was praising one of the most blatantly racist campaigns for president in the 20th century. (Note: remeber that Thurmond was a "Dixiecrat" who left the Democratic Party BECAUSE of the Democratic fight for Civil Rights, finding the Republican Party more accepting of his racism).

Then in 2006 there were two very instructive Senate races: Virginia and Tennessee. In Virginia, the Republican incumbent used a racial slur against a dark-skinned American and it blew up in his face. He lost. Democrats hit him hard for his open racism, and we now have Senator Jim Webb of Virginia instead of the racist Republican incumbent.

In Tennessee, racist Republican candidate Corker and the Republican Party ran an ad that implied his oponent, Henry Ford, jr. (a black) was having sex with white women. In it, they use the phrase, "Harold Ford...He's just not right."

A phrase that sounds suspiciously like "Harold Ford...He's just not white." And the truth is, neurologically our brains will interpret that phrase to mean "white." The pairing of the sex with white women, and the "he's just not white" line was clearly trying to play on the racism many voters might have deep down.

This ad, by the way, was crafted by Karl Rove.

And let's not forget the fact that Republicans claim Jews don't matter because they only make up 2% of the population. Then there is their blatant anti-Muslim stand. Then there have been countless racist remarks by Rep. Ed Butcher (R-MT) denigrating Native Americans.

I predicted that if Obama got the nomination republican racism would reach new lows. Seems that is coming through loud and clear to the American people. Republicans stand for racism and intolerance and it is about time for the American people to say, "enough is enough."

    Kissing the Jewish Vote Goodbye

This comes from the National Jewish Democratic Council:

"Kissing the Jewish vote goodbye," that was the headline in The Guardian this week about the McCain campaign that noted, "candidates like Palin are the Jews' worst nightmare."

The Politico noted in an article entitled, "Jewish voters may be wary of Palin," that, "John McCain may have helped Obama with his Jewish problem by choosing Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate."

In McCain’s first critical presidential decision, his judgment appears to be lacking with the selection of his Vice Presidential running mate. In Governor Sarah Palin, McCain selected a running mate with zero foreign policy experience and a brewing scandal which is being investigated by the Alaska state legislature.

The Palin selection seems bizarre, as the McCain campaign has spent the better part of the past year loudly exclaiming that it was reaching out to Jewish voters and made much to do about considering two Jewish legislators – Senator Joe Lieberman and Representative Eric Cantor – as vice presidential possibilities.

When asked what qualification he was looking for in selecting a Vice President, McCain, who turned 72 last week, has said , "The fundamental principle behind any selection of a running mate would be whether that person is fully prepared to take over." So why select Palin?

On domestic issues, Palin is totally out of step with public opinion in the Jewish community. Palin is against reproductive freedom - even in the cases of rape and incest; one of the first organizations to support her nomination was the Christian Coalition.

I hope all Jews by now realize the danger the right wing extremist Christians like Palin represent. From McCain's calling the anti-Semite Hagee his "spiritual guide" to the selection of the extremist Palin, McCain is telling Jewish voters what he really thinks of them.

    Joining the Green Economy

As one part of our economy crumbles due to the failures of Republican policies, there is one aspect of our economy that has been doing better than most areas and which has HUGE growth potential. This comes from the Center for American Progress Action Fund:

NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION: GREEN JOBS NOW - A DAY TO BUILD THE NEW ECONOMY
Simultaneous actions around the country will advocate for "Green Collar Jobs" initiatives
    Aug 08, 2008

OAKLAND, CA – Green For All, 1Sky, and the We Campaign announced today that September 27th, 2008 will be a national day of service and action. The theme is “Green Jobs Now.” On that day, tens of thousands of people will stage hundreds of grassroots events throughout the country. People from all walks of life will demonstrate to the next President, to Congress, and to the nation that we are ready to build an inclusive green economy, strong enough to lift people out of poverty and curb global warming.

    http://www.greenjobsnow.com

The National Day of Action brings together diverse groups and individuals to urge our government to make an even greater investment in green jobs and clean energy. The events are spotlighting low-income communities and communities of color. These two groups would be hardest hit by a climate catastrophe. But they have the most to gain in the green jobs/climate change conversation.

“Green Jobs Now is happening the day after the first Presidential Debate,” said Josh Lynch, Organizer for the Green Jobs Now Day of Action. “People all over the country are planning teach-ins, block parties, service events, and celebratory rallies for September 27th. The events will show the diversity that is America, but everyone will have the same message for Obama and McCain: Green Jobs Now.”

Brooklyn Focus: Fighting Corruption in Brooklyn

Bit by bit the power of Party Boss Vito Lopez is slipping. This was evident in this year's Democratic County Committee meeting this last Monday where what seemed to me to be some three, maybe four, groups of insurgents disrupting the scripted farce.

This was our third County Committee meeting. The first was when Joy was already overdue with Jacob. We had kind of hoped she would go into labor right then and there and disrupt the script. That would have been especially satisfying because it would have disrupted former Party Boss Clarence Norman's last hurrah before he went to prison. But Jacob debut came days later, so he didn't manage to upsatge Clarence Norman. That first meeting was also our entry into the insurgency as we saw what a farce it was, nothing more than a rubber stamp to the Party Boss's power with no real democracy as part of the Democratic Party in Brooklyn. The highlight was Ken Diamondstone's efforts to expose the farce for what it was. Diamondstone's efforts were ineffective, but they were both entertaining and illustrative. Sometimes the only way to fight a farce is with farce.

This year was far more exciting. First off, it seems Marty Connor was given HIS last hurrah this year. Connor, a long-time incumbent, was defeated by upstart Daniel Squadron. Remember as you read this that I endorsed Marty Connor against Squadron. Marty Connor was chosen this year to be the emcee of Vito Lopez's farce. Meanwhile, many Squadron supporters were there and quickly joined the insurgency against Vito's Farce. I endorsed Marty Connor for ideological reasons. But if Squadron is going to help bring down Vito Lopez, well, I'm listening. This also makes me wonder if my holding Squadron's connection with sleaze monger Michael Tobman against Squadron was wrong. Tobman seems to be Vito's latest lackey while Squadron's supporters seem to be Vito's latest irritation.

Joy and I were part of the old reform insurgency that has mildly disrupted the Party Script before. Interestingly, it was Charles Barron who began the disruption this year. Now I am no fan of Charles Barron's, but when he gets it right he has quite a knack of saying it just right. I believe "farce," "travesty," and "insult" were among the words he used to describe Vito's Farce. He got some loud applause from people who normally would not side with him.

New Kings Democrats were also there. This was an outgrowth of the Brooklyn Obama campaign, though it seemed to me that they also were something of a force for Squadron at least unofficially. Their goal is to democraticize the process in Brooklyn at least in part by electing people to County Committee. This was their first entry into County Committee and they quickly realized the script didn't include them, that Marty's running of the proceedings was biased towards the Party Boss, and that they had every intention of digging in and fighting the machine.

So at this point Vito had three vocal factions, completely disorganized, of course, but all disrupting Vito's Farce. These included the old reform movement (which is generally ineffective but did help defeat Vito in two Surrogate Court races and the Adler/Cohen Civil Court race), Charles Barron, and an organization inspireed by Obama and Squadron. Disorganized, but with considerable potential to damage the machine.

There also seemed a clear dispute over who would represent some EDs in another Assembly district and I was not clear on who was opposing the machine slate...but it was also clear that Marty Connor basically allowed the machine slate to push aside the insurgent slate.

Afterwards, Vito Lopez looked grim. Of course he never really looks happy. But I suspect that this was the first time he seriously felt his grip slipping on Brooklyn. And I suspect that Obama and Squadron's ground troops almost certainly were the most frightening to Lopez because they represent emerging forces nationally and statewide. I suspect that the state level party is getting a bit sick of Vito Lopez who, as far as I am aware, never carries out Democratic voter registration, never seriously helps a campaign defeat a Republican (in fact discourages challenges to Republicans) and is constantly dogged by charges of corruption and investigations. And remember that Vito has been losing for some time. Margarita Lopez-Torres won a very close election for Surrogate judge. That was a big loss for Vito since Surrogate Judge was one of Vito's biggest plums to give to supporters. Then he lost the SECOND Surrogate Judge seat to Diane Johnson (ironically his candidate against Margarita Lopez-Torres). This year he lost the 1st Civil Court race where he and Brooklyn's own Karl Rove, Michael Tobman, ran an expensive and nasty smear campaign on behalf of Roger Adler against Devin Cohen...and Cohen won. So Vito's power is shrinking already and now several new groups are joining the fray against him.

More battles are to come. The Vito Lopez/Michael Tobman sleaze team that was behind the failed and expensive Adler run are reportedly eying at least two city council races, including my own district (Yassky's seat). Defeating the sleaze team yet again will be my main goal next year. And I am sure we will have more Vito Lopez backed judicial candidates like the homophobic Noach Dear (who never practiced law in his life yet was muscled in by Vito into a judicial spot with the help of people like Marty Markowitz and Dominic Recchia).

But the real question, and one I am frequently asked by machine supporters, is who will replace Vito Lopez? Of course the best answer would be "no one" because what we need is a real reform of the whole system where party bosses aren't able to lord it over Brooklyn like a personal political fiefdom. But unless voters really get organized and reject the sleazier people like Vito Lopez and Marty Markowitz, reform may just have to start with a future party boss. Can that happen? It wouldn't be unprecedented, but it could happen. I had once thought the reform of Los Angeles politics could be a model for Brooklyn reform, but my friend who specializes in the history of progressive politics in California explained that reform happened in Los Angeles because the developers turned against the machine and favored reform. Hard to imagine THAT happening here in Brooklyn, particularly since some of the biggest backers of the likes of Lopez and Markowitz are developers.

But the election of Daniel Squadron tells us one thing. Incumbents aren't as secure as they once were. Problem is, it takes tons of money to defeat them. I have been saying there is a new force in NYC politics, or maybe not so new so much as maturing: The Schumer Clan. Will it become a Schumer machine? Will it favor reform or merely its own form of machine domination? Squadron isn't the first of the Schumer clan to win office, of course. But he was a major blow to the establishment in NYC. Adler's loss was a more minor blow, but a blow none the less. And that establishment in Brooklyn had already suffered several blows by losing both Surrogate Court seats. And now Charles Barron seems in on the insurgency. Vito Lopez is losing, slowly but surely. The question is, who will win?

NY State to Pennsylvania: Voter Registration and Get Out the Vote

This comes from a fellow IND member. I am more optimistic about our current chances of winning big, but I completely concur on the need to register voters and get out the vote. So please help out by participating and/or spreading the word!

    Dear Friends,

I had to think long and hard about whether to tell you the truth today. It's not as though I enjoy telling lies, but, like most people, I'm not above framing the world in a gentler light in order to protect the sensibilities of people I care about. History tells us, however, that those objects of our protective instincts are often done more harm than good. The truth can hurt, but the truth can also set you free. Sometimes it's hard to tell the truth, but here goes:

If this election were held today, Barack Obama would lose. We would lose. America and the world, I believe, would lose.

    Latest Gallup Tracking: 47-46, McCain
    Latest Rasmussen Tracking: 48-47, McCain
Latest Newsweek: 46-46, cold, dead even

And the Fox News/Rasmussen state poll in Pennsylvania wrapped up on Monday shows Obama's lead gone. They have it dead even at 47 up in Pennsylvania.

Yes, if the election were held today, it would be agonizingly close, but in the end I think Obama would lose. The good news is that the election is not held today. We have a little time, precious, precious time. And we have it within our power to do something, to do a great deal, really. It is a journey that begins with a single step: Get on the Bus.

If you have traveled down the road with us before, you need to get on the bus once again. If you have yet to take that first step, you need to know that quiet conversations with like-minded spirits in the cozy cafes of New York are not going to win this election. "The White House," wrote Hunter Thompson, "has never been won by timid warriors."

We depart from Port Authority Bus Terminal (South Terminal, 8th Ave. btwn 40th & 41st St.), Saturday morning, September 27th, aboard Trans-Bridge Bus Lines. Please arrive at the gate no later than 8:30 am to guarantee yourself a seat. The bus to Easton should depart from Gate 4 or 6. Please arrive early to purchase your ticket on the South Terminal main floor and make your way downstairs to the gate. Bus tickets are $37.95 round trip. The ride is about 1 hour 40 minutes. Buses return at 4:05 and 6:10 pm.

For those who would like to make a weekend of it, supporter housing is now available. Just let me know in your reply, and we'll hook you up with a local Obama supporter willing to offer up their home to you and our cause.

Thank you to everyone for your time and commitment. Please RSVP so I can provide a headcount to Obama's team in the Lehigh Valley.

    Very best wishes,

    Tom Predhome

Republican Corruption Resurgent on Staten Island

    9/11 Seven Years Later

Coming up in 2009, Josh Skaller for City Council.

Norm Siegel for Public Advocate in 2009

And three competing city council candidates (all of whom I know personally): Jo Anne Simon (my current female district leader), Ken Diamondstone (a friend, but no campaign website yet?), and Ken Baer for City Council.

My friend, Devin Cohen, wins a judicial election. This race proved, to paraphrase Devin, that you don't have to go negative to win, that you don't need to spend and spend and spend and spend (only spend and spend) to win. I would say that it showed that a Karl Rove style smear campaign will lose in a Democratic primary.

Marty Markowitz, the angry clown who would be mayor, has a record of being anti-union. If Marty, who has probably lost the gay and lesbian vote because of his support of Noach Dear for judge, loses the union vote, he has no shot at all at a future political career.

    NEW YORK BLOGGING:
The Albany Project gives excellent coverage of New York State politics.

The Daily Gotham covers both New York City (with a slight emphasis on Brooklyn) and New York State politics.

Reform NY is the blog of the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law

On NY Turf is run by someone I know. Long overdue that I add his blog here. Contains political info, good map resources for NYC and discussions of development issues.

Let me highlight some excellent candidates running in New York State.

Let me introduce Don Barber, running for State Senate (SD-51) and endorsed by Democracy for America. You can read about Don on Daily Gotham.

Let me remind you of another candidate running for State Senate, Jim Gennaro, who I introduced before as working towards an intelligent biodiesel program for NYC's heating needs. Gennaro is kicking ass in fundraising, easily outraising the Republican incumbent. I think we can make this one competitive!

    Norm Siegel for Public Advocate
For those of you who live in NYC, let me introduce you to Norman Siegel, one of America's top Civil Rights Lawyers, is running for New York Public Advocate. Here's a Youtube video of him:

Josh Skaller for City Council. A progressive who is coming in second in fundraising, Josh is considered a serious contender by several pragmatic allies I have talked to. Josh may well become the frontrunner if he keeps it up. Josh is a good friend of ours, a solid progressive, and about as honest as you can get. Josh will be one of my top priorities in 2009!

Here are a handful of Democratic Clubs worth checking out:

The Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats is a community-based Democratic club. CBID has fought for reform and progressive causes since 1968. As a Brooklyn-based Club, we have been instrumental in the election of many candidates for public office. Much of this success was a result of our question-and-answer forums with prospective candidates as well as our extensive on-the-street contact with our constituents.

Staunchly opposed to political corruption, we are proud of our independence and our commitment to progressive reform in city, state and national politics. We are a vehicle for citizen empowerment and making government more accountable to our neighborhoods.

We meet monthly, usually the fourth Thursday evening of the month in the basement of the Park Slope United Methodist Church, on the corner of 6th ave and 8th street, at 7:30pm. All are welcome.

New Kings Democrats (”NKD”) is a new, grassroots organization in Kings County (Brooklyn), New York whose primary mission is to recruit and prepare individuals to run for Kings County Democratic Committee. NKD hopes to achieve the goal of an inclusionary and participatory democracy by making it easy for individuals to run for local, elected office. NKD will serve as a training ground for individuals seeking higher office, and hopes to build and nurture a new group of Brooklyn Democratic leaders.

Here is a candidate endorsed by the Indigenous Democratic Network (INDN List):

    Senator Suzanne Williams
Candidate for Colorado State Senate, District 28
    Enrolled Member of Comanche Nation

Senator Suzanne Williams is seeking re-election in Colorado’s State Senate District 28. She is a citizen of the Comanche Nation of Oklahoma and the only enrolled tribal member in the Colorado state legislature.

Senator Williams’ 12 year tenure in Colorado’s State Legislature is marked by bills that benefit all Colorado citizens. In 2008, the legislation she sponsored promoted a second chance program for minors with felonies who did not commit or assist in committing the act, a dual enrollment program for Native American students in Colorado, and a bill that would establish a two-year pilot program to improve the efficiency of Colorado’s Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. Moreover, Senator Williams has sponsored bills in previous sessions of Colorado legislature that included anti-graffiti (1987) and Child Care Professionals Loan Forgiveness Program (2001).

She has held many leadership positions in the state legislature. She was elected the Assistant Caucus Chair for the Senate Majority Caucus (2007), the Vice Chair of the Transportation Committee (present), the Legislative Chair for the Early Childhood Commission, and is a member of the Education Committee.

Her community involvement makes Senator Williams a valuable resource to her district on a local level. She has been a member of many diverse boards, including D.A.R.E Colorado, United Cerebral Palsy Association, Colorado Special Education Advisory Board, Aurora Sister Cities President, and Co-chair of the Early Childcare and Education Commission. Senator Williams’ accolades include being chosen by the Aurora Chamber of Commerce as “Aurora Woman of the Year” in 2007.

Here are some great candidates running for office in Colorado (all are endorsed by Progressive Majority):

    Joe Neguse
Candidate for University of Colorado Regent - District 2 (Open Seat)

Joe Neguse is a first-time candidate running for the University of Colorado Board of Regents to represent Congressional District 2. Joe is a young, African American law student at the University of Colorado. He was appointed by the Boulder City Council as a Commissioner on the Boulder Housing Authority, and is a co-founder and former Board Chair of New Era, Colorado, an organization that engages young people around voter registration and mobilization. Congressional District 2 encompasses Boulder, the northern Denver suburbs and about four counties on the western slope. Joe's election will bring a more progressive, diverse voice to the board. Joe got top line at the Congressional Assembly and kept his primary opponent off the ballot. He has been endorsed by numerous elected officials at all levels of government, labor groups and prominent community members.

Click here to support and learn more about Joe.

    AJ Clemmons
Candidate for University of Colorado Regent - District 6 (Open Seat)

AJ Clemmons is running for the first time for the CU Board of Regents in Congressional District 6. AJ is a Colorado native and has been an active board member for the Colorado Women's Agenda. She currently works for the city of Denver as a community liaison for the Denver Police Department, where she co-developed an award-winning program for successful citizen-police mediation. Congressional District 6 sits in southeast Denver and includes Arapahoe, southern Jefferson, Douglas, and Elbert counties. AJ's election to the CU Board of Regents, alongside a Democratic victory in Joe Neguse's regent race in district 2, would create a power shift on the CU Board of Regents. AJ's election to the Board of Regents would also further representation of people of color on the Board. Incumbent Paul Schaur recently dropped out of the Republican primary in part due to 527-group attack mail that was sent out against him. This clearly changed the dynamic in this race, as now AJ is running against Jim Geddes - an extremely conservative doctor.

Click here to support and learn more about AJ.

    Dan Gibbs
Candidate for State Senate - District 16 (Incumbent)
    Eagle, Summit & Lake counties

Dan Gibbs was appointed to Senate District 16 when Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald resigned her seat to run for congress. This is an important seat for the senate to protect. Senate District 16 is a large district which encompasses both sides of the continental divide and goes from Jefferson/Boulder counties to Summit County. Progressive Majority successfully fielded Dan in 2006 when he ran for the House of Representatives. Dan is a 32 year-old former congressional staffer and forest firefighter. He is a champion on environmental issues around both renewable energies and the bark beetle. Dan is running against a businessman, who is relatively unknown, but will push a very pro-business agenda. Despite his solid 2006 win and impressive legislative session, this race will be competitive.

    Pam Berry
Candidate for El Paso County Commissioner - District 3 (Challenger)

Pam Berry is running for the El Paso County Commission in District 3, representing Western Colorado Springs. Pam is a Colorado Springs native who has spent the last 30 years working for the Colorado Springs, D-11 School District as an administrator and teacher. Pam grew up in a military family. She has been an active member of the African American community in Colorado Springs her entire life. Pam is a first-time candidate and a current member of AFSCME. Progressive Majority first recruited Pam to run for office at the 2007 Color Colorado Conference. Her opponent is incumbent Commissioner Sallie Clark. El Paso County is going through tough economic times and will need to make some cuts in the county budget. This commission needs progressive leaders like Pam making these decisions.

    Arvada, Westminster

Evie Hudak is running for Senate District 19. She is a retired educator who has spent the last 20 years working to build a stronger early education program in Colorado. Her opponent is Libby Szabo, a right-wing conservative. Evie is strong voice for children and will lead on educational issues. This is an important race for the State Senate and will generate quite a bit of attention and resources from both candidates and their supporters.

Click here to support and learn more about Evie.

    Joe Whitcomb
Candidate for State Senate - District 23 (Challenger)
    Broomfield, Frederick, Firestone

Joe came to Progressive Majority nearly two years ago when he first considered running. Progressive Majority trained Joe on campaign fundamentals, primarily stump speech and messaging. He is running against ultra-conservative incumbent Shawn Mitchell, who has a history of extreme right-wing bills and votes in the Senate, although he represents a relatively moderate district. Joe is a passionate, committed candidate, and will be a leader on progressive issues.

Click here to support and learn more about Joe.

    Joe Miklosi
Candidate for State Representative - District 9 (Open Seat)
    Southeast Denver

Joe Miklosi, former Progressive Majority Colorado State Director, is running for State House District 9. The incumbent Democrat is a term-limited moderate who is running for higher office - State Senate. The district is located in Southeast Denver and is comprised of older, stable neighborhoods with a large Jewish population. Joe will bring passion, dedication and a progressive voice to all House District 9 residents. As a teacher, volunteer, and mother of two, she has the experience and passion to be the next representative. A former teacher, Camille was active in her union and is currently involved with the PTA. House District 22 is an area where Progressive Majority-endorsed Kathy Hartman won in her 2006 County Commissioner race. Camille's primary opponent is a New Democrat who changed his party affiliation in the last few years. In the general election, she will face conservative incumbent Ken Summers.

Click here to support and learn more about Camille.

    Dianne Primavera
Candidate for State Representative - District 33 (Incumbent)
    Broomfield, Louisville, Erie, Superior, Westminster

Representative Dianne Primavera is running for re-election to the state House in District 33. Dianne is a progressive leader on healthcare issues and needs to return to the Capitol to finish the job she started. Sue has served as a strong progressive in the state Legislature since 1998 - one term in the state House before her 2000 election to the state Senate - representing northern Jefferson County. Sue is a retired teacher and long-time community volunteer. Her work includes service in the Peace Corps and as legislative chair for the state PTA board. Sue has previously won three elections to the state Legislature. In her run for County Commissioner, she will be competing in a district ten times the size of her Senate seat. Jefferson County (immediately west of Denver) will also be a major target for Democrats running statewide campaigns in 2008. Sue's election to the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners would bring a power shift to the Board of Commissioners in the fourth largest (and long-time bellwether) county in Colorado. Sue is running against current Jefferson County Treasurer Faye Griffith, who will have substantial Republican support.

    Jason Bane
Candidate for Jefferson County Commissioner - District 2 (Challenger)

Jason is running for Jefferson County Commissioner. Jason is a communications staff member for SEIU International. He is 30 years old and a third generation Jefferson County native. He is a member of the Rotary Club, serves on the boards of Denver SCORES, a nonprofit after-school program and the Jefferson County PTA. Jason's opponent is an incumbent who has recently come under attack for rumored involvement with another commissioner to use county funds to privately investigate county workers. Jason is a champion of economic justice, responsible growth and education. He has received the endorsement of Congressman Ed Perlmutter and many labor organizations. Jason is a strong progressive candidate whose leadership is needed on the Jefferson County Commission.

    Peter Tregillus
Candidate for La Plata County Commissioner - District 1 (Challenger)

Elected! Too Close To Call This is a Hot Race This Candidate is part of the Racial Justice CampaignPeter Tregillus is running for La Plata County Commissioner in District 1. Peter is a long-time community activist and program developer for Southern Ute Community Action Programs. Over the last 35 years, Peter has worked to improve La Plata County, from serving on the Durango Planning Commission to directing an affordable housing program. Progressive Majority recruited Peter to run for office at a Road Show in 2005. A successful campaign would sweep the La Plata County Commission in 2008. With La Plata County facing major oil, gas and growth issues, this race will be extremely competitive.

    Wally White
Candidate for La Plata County Commissioner - District 3 (Incumbent)

Commissioner Wally White is running for re-election to the La Plata County Commission. Wally is a long-time community activist and a llama farmer. Over the last 20 years he has served the La Plata County communities on a number of local planning commissions and boards. La Plata County is a largely rural county in southwest Colorado that includes the city of Durango. Wally is a champion of planning, water and oil and gas regulations issues, all of which are top priority in this rural county. He has been endorsed by numerous community leaders. La Plata County has been a priority area for Progressive Majority, in 2006 we successfully fielded Joelle Riddle for La Plata County Commission. Wally's continued leadership is important in this corner of the state.

    Debbie Pilch
Candidate for Weld County Commissioner - At Large (Challenger)

Debbie Pilch is running for Weld County Commissioner at-large. Debbie has served two terms on the Greeley City Council, and has been a progressive voice there for the last eight years. Before her election to City Council, Debbie served on the Greeley Airport Authority and on a number of other local planning and community service boards and commissions. Debbie approached Progressive Majority in January of 2008 for help with her campaign. Debbie's election to the Weld County Commission will help put us in a position to take the majority in future years on a board that is currently entirely Republican and in the pocket of big developers. Weld County is a largely rural county that starts about 30 minutes north of Denver and continues to the Wyoming border. There is widespread discontent throughout the county with the current commissioners, and Democratic Governor Bill Ritter also won Weld County in the 2006 gubernatorial election. Debbie's opponent is yet to be determined as there is a two-way Republican primary between Sean Conway (Sen. Wayne Allard's chief of staff) and Mike Freeman.

    Tom Pettit
Candidate for Weld County Commissioner - District 3 (Challenger)

Tom Pettit is running for Weld County Commissioner in District 3, representing east-central Weld County. Tom is a fifth generation Weld County native with a long history of leadership in the county. He has served as Mayor Pro-Temp on the Kersey Town Board, and was elected at-large to the Weld County Council. Progressive Majority recruited Tom to run for Weld County Commission in 2007 after he attended a Progressive Majority Road Show and Camp Wellstone. Tom's election to the Weld County Commission would put us in the position to gain a majority in future years on the Commission, which is currently comprised entirely of development-oriented conservatives.

Right wing racism rears it's ugly head yet again. The ill-named American Values and Focus on the Family Action Forum (a group which seems unAmerican and displays terrible values) sells "Obama Waffles" with racial stereotype. What is with Republicans? How can they think this kind of adolescent racism is okay?

And speaking of Republican racism: McCain and the Race Card - The Corporate Media's Role. And let's remember McCain opposed the Martin Luther King, jr. holiday. For those who want to read more about Republican racism, I've discussed it here (from before Obama won the primary), and it is covered in Drew Westin's book The Political Brain with some pretty nasty examples.

Dole’s irresponsible votes have left American soldiers vulnerable and unprepared

NC-Gov: Elitism, vouchers, and new math

    Where is Elizabeth Dole?

North Carolina is a Senate battleground this year and we have a pretty good shot at winning. Dole has shown a pretty dismal record if you look carefully, as this person does.

Kay Hagen is our candidate to beat Dole and she is polling a bit ahead of Dole now. From Hagen's website:

Kay Hagan knows that you do not make a difference standing on the sideline. Before her decade of service in the North Carolina Senate, she was a vice president at NCNB (now Bank of America), then North Carolina’s largest bank.

While in the state Senate, she has proven to be an effective leader who is not afraid to do the hard work to bridge partisan divides and always put people before politics. Named one of North Carolina’s “Ten Most Effective Senators,” three terms in a row by the non-partisan North Carolina Center for Public Policy Research, Governor Mike Easley calls Kay “one of the smartest, hardest working, most effective senators we have in Raleigh.”

Here is Kay Hagan discussing energy policy and jobs:

You can also read about Kay Hagen's farm policy here.

I notice Hagan's campaign seems extremely well organized, which will really increase her chances of winning. You can help in many ways by signing up here. Even if you aren't in North Carolina you can help by phone banking from home (a strategy that worked extremely well in a NY State Congressional race in 2006!)

Next let me highlight Larry Kissell, running for Congress. Larry almost certainly won in 2006, but voter fraud that lost thousands of votes, probably stealing the election. What is most disturbing is that most of those votes that were "lost" were military voters. Kissell is runnig again and is very likely to win. He was a Textile Worker for 27 years and is now a teacher at East Montgomery High School. Sounds like an ideal Democrat! And Larry Kissell seems to be doing excellently in fundraising.

Governors Debate Biofuels (and a reminder of my own view on biofuels). Seems to me oil and coal producing states are pushing to stop biofuels, corn and soy producing states want biofuels based on corn and soy, and wood producing states want biofuels based on wood. No surprise there. But we really do need a smart policy here.
