    Progressive Democrat Issue 94: THOUGHTS

Election day is coming up. So this issue is dedicated to looking at the two parties and how they differ...MARKEDLY differ. I will never say all Democrats and good and all Republicans are bad. Those who know me from other blogs know I often am fighting Democrats. But there is one very clear fact that I have seen throughout my life: Democrats are almost always better than Republicans. And this issue is dedicated to exploring why I feel that.

Going into this election I feel for the fist time since Newt Gingrich played on the worst in Americans and rode to brief glory, that the nation is waking up to just how bad Republicans can be. I hope that feeling leads to a near sweep for Democrats. If not, well, there is still no question that the tide has been turning in our favor and I urge people to not be discouraged if things go badly. If things do go the way we hope they do, then we can celebrate, but our work will not be over. We will still be fighting Republican corruption, vote stealing, lies and bad policies every step of the way. Plus no matter what our own party does need reforming. So, win or lose, I will continue advocating for progressive reform both within the Democratic Party and throughout the nation. So...be active...vote...and stay tuned.

Progressive Democrat Issue 94: DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP

Democrats are not pefect...and no Democrat would ever say they were. But Democrats are the political force that, more than any other, has moved this nation forward since the 1930's. Economic fairness, education, civil rights, the dignity of the working many, populism, progressivism, these have all been DEMOCRATIC values since the 1930's. And largely remain Democratic values despite intraparty infighting, political ups and downs, and despite all the attempts of Greens and Republicans to paint our party differently.

I am often embarassed by the Democratic Party, my Party. But I am far more often proud of my Party, the Democratic Party, not only for what it stands for, but for what it accomplishes and the great leaders it produces. Many Democratic leaders have been flawed, LBJ and Truman in particular. But even the most flawed of Democratic leaders, LBJ, gave America great civil rights legislation, the Great Society, Medicare, Medicaid, and the War on Poverty.

Where Democrats too often fail is not, as the Greens and Republicans would have it, in lacking ideas. The Democratic Party has been, for 70 years now, the primary source of new ideas for American politics even while Republicans simply try to restore pre-1930's ideas over and over again no matter how often they fail. Where Democrats too often fail is in having a lack of good leadership from within. But when that leadership emerges, great ideas and great policies often result.

The Democratic Presidents since FDR have all been flawed. But they have also all been great men despite those flaws. Republican presidents post-Theodore Roosevelt have mostly been backwards thinkers, lacking any new ideas or even a clear understanding of the modern world. Some, like Eisenhauer, despite that, have been good men. Others, like Nixon, have understood the modern world and had new ideas, but were otherwise morally corrupt and pathological liars. Then there is the current resident of the White House, a man who is BOTH unable to comprehend the modern world, AND who is morally corrupt.

I want to honor the Democratic Presidents since FDR, admitting their faults, but remembering the reasons why they were great men and leaders.

FDR: "We have nothing to fear but Fear itself."
"Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and senators and congressmen and government officials, but the voters of this country."
New Deal; Social Security; Montevideo Convention(renouncing the right to intervene unilaterally in the affairs of Latin American countries); Lend/Lease policy...

    Truman: "The Buck Stops Here"
"America was not built on fear. America was built on courage, on imagination and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand."
Artillery commander, WW I; Truman Committee (exposing fraud and mismanagement in military); United Nations; Marshall Plan; Fair Deal...

JFK: "And so, my fellow americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man."
"Freedom has many difficulties and democracy is not perfect, but we have never had to put a wall up to keep our people in."
volunteered for military service despite being disqualified due to a bad back; Lieutenant in the Navy; Navy and Marine Corps Medal; Purple Heart; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal; Alliance of Progress; Partial Test Ban Treaty; created the Peace Corps...

LBJ: "It is the common failing of totalitarian regimes that they cannot really understand the nature of our democracy. They mistake dissent for disloyalty. They mistake restlessness for a rejection of policy. They mistake a few committees for a country. They misjudge individual speeches for public policy."
"For this is what America is all about. It is the uncrossed desert and the unclimbed ridge. It is the star that is not reached and the harvest that is sleeping in the unplowed ground."
school teacher; officer in the Naval Reserves; Civil Rights Act of 1964; Elementary and Secondary Education Act; Great Society; Medicare; Medicaid; War on Poverty...

Jimmy Carter: "A strong nation, like a strong person, can afford to be gentle, firm, thoughtful, and restrained. It can afford to extend a helping hand to others. It's a weak nation, like a weak person, that must behave with bluster and boasting and rashness and other signs of insecurity."
"Human rights is the soul of our foreign policy, because human rights is the very soul of our sense of nationhood."
Graduated from US Naval Academy; served on submarines in both Atlantic and Pacific fleets; bolstered Social Security; Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act; Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt; SALT II Treaty; founded Carter Center; Nobel Peace Prize winner; Sunday School teacher...

Bill Clinton: "Let us all take more responsibility, not only for ourselves and our families but for our communities and our country."
"Saddam Hussein didn't kill 3,100 people on Sept. 11. Osama bin Laden did, and as far as we know he's still alive."
Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993; Brady Bill; expanded the Earned Income Tax Credit; raised taxes on the wealthiest 1.2% of taxpayers, while cutting taxes on the poorest taxpayers and on 90 percent of small businesses; balanced the budget; created Federal surplus; paid off some of America's National debt; vetoed late-term abortion ban; proposed Campaign finance reform; establishment of the "Bin Ladin Unit" within the CIA; targeted bin Laden in a cruise missle attack, missing him by mere hours; declared the Taliban a terrorist regime; Memorandum of Notification ordering the CIA to capture bin Laden; prevented al-Qaeda "Millennium Attacks;" warned Bush (who ignored him) that the number one issue of Bush's presidency would be al-Qaeda...

At the end of the Clinton Presidency, America was on track to be debt free for the first time in its entire history by 2008, and was focused on stopping al-Qaeda, particularly after discovery of the "Millennium Attack" plot.

    Enter Bush...

    During the 9/11 attacks

    Bush's Iraq policy: "Mission Accomplished"

While New Orleans was drowning after Katrina

And here is a graph of the National Debt from Truman through today...shows the effect the 1920's "trickle down" "supply side" failed economics of the current Republican Party.

And, finally, what actual ideas are Republicans offering in this election?

A far, far cry from FDR's "we have nothing to fear but Fear itself."

Progressive Democrat Issue 94: WILL THERE BE ANY RED STATES LEFT

Now I am never one to be overly optimistic, but I have to say that you KNOW the Republicans are hurting when they are having trouble hanging on to IDAHO.

Yes, Idaho. Two separate polls taken in October (Mason-Dixon and RT Strategies) show the ID-1 race to be close. One shows it a statistical dead heat and the other shows it to be within 6 points. Dare we hope for Congressman Grant from Idaho?

Furthermore, the Republican hold on the Idaho Governorship has slipped from strong retention to weak retention.

    Yes...in IDAHO.

Meanwhile, the Wyoming House race (at large) also remains closer than anyone would have expected. THe most recent poll (Aspen) shows the Democrat within 4 points of the Republican. Congressman Trauner from Wyoming? Sounds good to me!

    Yes, in Wyoming.

And, of course, Republicans are fighting to keep the Montana Senate seat and might lose as many as three House seats in Indiana.

There are no more safe red states. Sure, many of these close races will still remain Republican. But they are having to fight for it!

Idaho...Wyoming...Montana...Indiana. Sounds like a 50-state strategy might be paying off.

Progressive Democrat Issue 94: ENERGY POLICY

Sometimes things just come together and several individual items that don't quite add up to a story unite into a really good one.

This last week, a discussion with someone who grew up in Iowa, this month's issue of Catalyst, the newsletter of the Union of Concerned Scientists, and a press release from Nancy Pelosi all synergized to remind me that Democrats have been pushing for a real, American, practical energy policy since the Carter administration and all the Republicans advocate for are oil, oil, oil.

On October 26th, in response to the release of record profits by the bloated oil company Exxon/Mobil, Democratic House Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement:

"Today’s record oil company profits remind Americans that Republicans’ energy policies, which were written in secret by the Cheney Task Force and the energy industry, are an abject failure for the American people. Their six-year record of heaping subsidies on oil companies reaping record profits while leaving consumers to pay the bill, has brought us record dependence on foreign oil.

“Under President Bush and the Republican Congress gas prices are 75 percent higher than in 2000, consumers will pay an average $2,300 more in energy costs than they did in 2000, and we are sending nearly $800 million a day to the Middle East and other oil producing countries.”

“Democrats’ New Direction will free America from our dangerous addiction to foreign oil – and we intend to do it within 10 years. Our energy plan ends these unnecessary giveaways to Big Oil and invests in clean, energy-efficient technologies, conservation, and promoting domestic energy alternatives, such as biofuels. Our plan will send our energy dollars to the Midwest, not the Middle East.”

We are footing the bill for record oil company profits. And, I would add, American soldiers are dying for those profits and yet our government won't even give them adequate body armor. This is the result of Bush's energy policy: Americans pay 75% more, oil companies make record profits, American soldiers die.

But what is the alternative Democrats recommend? Alternative energy. Clean energy. AMERICAN energy. That is the alternative.

Republicans want us to think oil and coal are the only option because those are the options they can profit off the most. But coal, if done cleanly, is more expensive than wind power, and oil is the old solution, dirty solution, the Saudi solution. Republicans are mired in the old ways, energy solutions for the 19th and 20th Centuries. Democrats have been looking at new solutions since the 1970's and Republicans keep shaking their heads and saying we are not able to make the shift.

But others are making the shift. I just heard Bill Clinton at a fundraiser talk about how those industrial nations who embrased the Kyoto accord on global warming as an opportunity to explore cleaner, domestically produced energy had more job growth and economic expansion than America, which still clings to the old, Republucan/Saudi energy policy. And I have written about NUMEROUS nations who are EMBRACING alternative energy as a major part of their energy policy, including Australia, Argentina, Brazil and Sweden. Is the United States so technologically backwards that we can't have as ambitious a vision as Brazil and Argentina? NO! It is REPUBLICANS who lack the visions. Democrats HAVE the vision. And we advocate for sound energy solutions that WORK for Americans.

At this last week's New Democratic Majority meeting, I met a gentleman who has just moved to NYC from Minnesota, but grew up in Iowa. He told me this about wind energy: for every wind generating unit an Iowa farmer puts up on his property, he loses a little less than an acre of usable land, but gains income that far outweighs what he can get from that acre in produce. Iowa farmers are making a profit by leasing their land for wind energy. And that wind energy gives a real energy alternative to Saudi oil. This is a PROGRESSIVE solution, backed by Democrats, which is a sound, AMERICAN alternative to the old, outdated, failed Republican oil policy. It helps farmers and it creates American jobs. I am also aware of a program where American Indians are starting to use wind energy as an income source, again benefiting AMERICANS while creating alternative energy.

This is not some future solution. In fact, we have had the capability of using wind as a major part of our energy policy for at least 10 years. According to a Sept. 1995 Scientific American article, America's Great Plains states could, using the technology existing AT THAT TIME, be a major energy exporter using wind power alone. That was 1995. Why are we still subsidizing oil profits and sacrificing our soldiers for oil?

According to the current issue of Catalyst, from the Union of Concerned Scientists (issue not yet online) today's wind generators are currently producing 10,000 megawatts of energy in America, enough to power more than 2.5 million homes. What has lagged is NOT technology, but investment. Many problems, such as bird kills, have been greatly reduced and efficiency greatly increased. Yet the primary cornerstone of energy policy under Bush is oil subsidies, which is the ONLY thing that allows oil to compete against the improved wind energy.

Jimmy Carter initiated the incentives for alternative energy, at a time when technology was still improving. Ronald Reagan largely halted those incentives. Real growth in wind energy investment only really happened near the end of Bill Clinton's administration, which is when larger scale investment began. Al Gore and John Kerry both made these kind of American, clean energy alternatives a major part of their proposed energy policies. Yet Bush, like Reagan before him, could not see beyond the old solutions, oil and coal. Nuclear was their only relatively new solution, but no one has yet been able to find a solution for the waste problem in that industry. Safety concerns have been addressed well from what I can tell, but there is still a problem with waste products that remain dangerous far longer than modern technology can reliably contain them.

Voting for Democrats supports new, American ideas for energy policies that help farmers, create American jobs, reduce pollution, reduce dependence on Saudi and Venezuelan oil and is cheaper than clean coal. Vote for new ideas, vote Democrat.

Progressive Democrat Issue 94: NY REPUBLICAN CONGRESSMAN BEATS HIS WIFE

Awhile back I wrote about a Pennsylvania Republican Congressman, Don Sherwood, who tried to strangle his mistress when the mistress escaped, locked herself in Sherwood's bathroom and called 911 for help. This very public example of assault and battery on Sherwood's part did not prevent Bush from eagerly campaiging on Sherwood's behalf, thus showing that Republican morality apparently includes beating women.

To further bolster this proof that Republicans consider beating women moral, police reports are now leaking out that New York Republican Congressman and public drunkard John Sweeny, not only beat his first wife, but now beats his second wife. This is from Michael Bouldin of Daily Gotham:

The Albany Times-Union reported late yesterday that a newly obtained police report shows that police responded to a 9/11 call issuing from the residence of republican Congressman John Sweeney (read the report here). The call was made by Sweeney's present wife while in a state of intoxication; the reason given was that he was 'knocking her around'. This is the Congressman's second marriage; the first ended amid allegations of similar incidents.

Of course, as we noted some time ago, wife beating isn't the only pathology Sweeney seems intent to make a subject of dinner table conversation: there's also the drinking and the extremism and his ranking among the twenty most corrupt Members of Congress.

Notably, the Times-Union has been trying to get this report since the violence happened in December; however, the state police refused to release them, referring all inquiries 'to headquarters'. The state police reports to republican governor George Pataki. You do the math.

THIS is Republican values at work right here. Corruption and beating women. Sweeney and Sherwood are both well loved by Bush and the Republican Congressional leadership and very few Republican politicians have even criticized either of them for beating women. One exception is that the Republican candidate for Congress in the NY-21 district has endorsed Sweeney's Democratic opponent, Kirsten Gillibrand, showing that at least some Republicans still have values. By contrast, NY Governor Pataki seems to have helped COVER UP the police reports, thus putting him in the same category as Hastert and Reynolds who covered up for the sexual predator, Republican Congressman Foley, for six years. Not only do Republicans tolerate sexual predators and wife beaters, but they actively cover up for them!

You can fight Republican abuse of women by supporting Chris Carney (Lieutenant Commander in the United States Naval Reserve, served multiple tours overseas and was activated for operations Enduring Freedom and Noble Eagle and he has served as Senior Terrorism and Intelligence Advisor at the Pentagon) against Sherwood and supporting Kirsten Gillibrand (Special Counsel to the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development during Clinton's Presidency) against Sweeney. Both races are, despite the abusiveness of the Republican candidates.

Progressive Democrat Issue 94: URGENT NATIONAL GOTV EFFORTS

    CAMPAIGNS: Winning in 2006

We have a mere few days to win. And winning depends on you. So, here are the GOTV efforts you can do from home between now and Tuesday. I BEG you to be a part of these efforts!

HELP NY STATE (AND CALIFORNIA) FROM HOME:John Hall for Congress (also cooperating after 9 PM with McNerney campaign in California! Focus on TWO House races in one shot!) sign up to phone bank FROM YOUR OWN HOME here: http://www.johnhallforcongress.com/node/108

HELP NEVADA FROM HOME:Jack Carter for Senate Phone Bank from Home: help Nevada from home! To help Jimmy Carter's son win the Nevada Senate, SIGN UP HERE.

HELP VIRGINIA FROM HOME: Jim Webb for Senate Phone Bank from Home: Jim Webb is locked in one of the closest Senate races this year, and his opponent is an odious, racist Republican we really HAVE to defeat. Please help by phone banking for Webb from home.

HELP OHIO FROM HOME: Jennifer Brunner for Ohio Secretary of State Phone Bank from Home: Want to make Ohio's elections reliable again? If so, we need Jennifer Brunner as Ohio Secretary of State. Please help by phone banking for Jennifer from home. This race is close and your efforts can help guarantee fair elections in Ohio.

If you can't phone bank, you can still donate. This really is the final push and money is needed almost as much as volunteer time. I recommend visiting one of the following Act Blue pages depending on your philosophy:

If you favor defense, protecting our weaker seats and avoiding over confidence, please donate to my Pessimistic Democrat Act Blue Site. This site focuses on the races we need to most defend and the close races that we could still lose through inattention or spreading ourselves too thin.

If you think we are poised to win big this year and want to push that win as far as we can take it, please donate to my Optimistic Democrat Act Blue Site. This site focuses on races that are somewhat longshots but still quite possible pick ups. If we are going to completely rout the Republicans, these are the races to win.

And if you REALLY want to kick ass this year, please donate to my Reddest to Blue Act Blue site. This site focuses on those races that were originally thought to be solid, safe red that have unexpectedly become tossups or only barely leaning Republican. These would be some of the best pick ups, from Idaho to Wyoming to Montana. This site is dedicated to turning some of the reddest states blue. All are winnable races, though some are long shots.

Progressive Democrat Issue 94: NY STATE CONGRESSIONAL VOTING RECORD

Recently I wrote about an organization called Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) which has rated Republicans markedly lower than Democrats on issues of concern to soldiers and veterans. IAVA was founded in June 2004 and claims to be the nation's first and largest group dedicated to the Troops and Veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the civilian supporters of those Troops and Veterans. The gist is that Republicans pretty much suck on defense while Democrats are mostly rated well by IAVA. Many of us have known this ever since Republicans in Congress criticized Clinton for going after bin Laden and since Republicans called Clinton "obsessed with al-Qaeda." That alone was enough for me to see that Republicans could not deal with threats to America while Clinton actually prevented the Millenium Attacks. Republicans claim that was pure luck (yeah...right), but it still is markedly better than anything Bush has been able to muster. Even some top ranking Generals, previously life-long Republicans, agree that Republicans are failing on Defense, not to mention the 21 Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans who are so pissed they are running for Congress as Democrats and are vocally opposed to Bush's policies.

But I now want to extend my analysis to look at ratings of NY State Republicans vs. Democrats on other issues. Below I have ratings on Defense (A through F, from IAVA), Seniors issues (lifetime rating on a scale of 0-100 from Alliance for Retired Americans), environment (most recent ratings on a scale of 0-100, League of Conservation Voters, an organization), Labor issues (lifetime score from 0-100, AFL-CIO) and reproductive rights (lifetime score from 0-100, Planned Parenthood). This is a mix of so-called "right" and "left" issues, and in almost every case Republicans rank below Democrats. Feel free to distribute this info and use it on election day.

    Republicans:
    Peter King:Defense: C+; Seniors: 11; Environment: 8; Labor: 35; Choice: 0
    Vito Fossella: Defense: C+; Seniors: 9; Environment: 17; Labor: 15; Choice: 0
    Sue Kelly: Defense: C+; Seniors: 8; Environment: 92; Labor: 28; Choice: 82
    John Sweeney: Defense: C+; Seniors: 14; Environment: 42; Labor: 35; Choice: 25
    John McHugh: Defense: C+; Seniors: 20; Environment: 25; Labor: 45; Choice: 0
    Sherwood Boehlert: Defense: C+; Seniors: 24; Environment: 83; Labor: 59; Choice: 100
    James Walsh: Defense: C+; Seniors: 6; Environment: 58; Labor: 34; Choice: 0
    Thomas Reynolds: Defense: C; Seniors: 2; Environment: 8; Labor: 12; Choice: 0
    Randy Kuhl: Defense: D; Seniors: 10; Environment: 33; Labor: 33; Choice: 0

Pretty dismal ratings on these issues that Americans value. Makes you wonder just what their priorities are...oh, yeah, Halliburton and Exxon profits. Why do Republicans hate America?

    Democrats:
    Chuck Schumer: Defense: B+; Seniors: 96; Environment: 71; Labor: 92; Choice: 100
    Hillary Clinton: Defense: A-; Seniors: 100; Environment: 71; Labor: 91; Choice: 100

    Edolphus Towns: Defense: B; Seniors: 93; Environment: 83; Labor: 97; Choice: 100
    Major Owens: Defense: C; Seniors: 100; Environment: 100; Labor: 98; Choice: 100
    Nydia Velasquez: Defense: B-; Seniors: 100; Environment: 92; Labor: 95; Choice: 100
    Carolyn Maloney: Defense: A-; Seniors: 98; Environment: 92; Labor: 92; Choice: 100
    Charles Rangel: Defense: A-; Seniors: 100; Environment: 100; Labor: 94; Choice: 100
    Joe Serrano: Defense: B-; Seniors: 100; Environment: 100; Labor: 95; Choice: 100
    Eliot Engel: Defense: A-; Seniors: 100; Environment: 100; Labor: 98; Choice: 100
    Nita Lowey: Defense: A; Seniors: 100; Environment: 100; Labor: 94; Choice: 100
    Michael McNulty: Defense: A-; Seniors: 100; Environment: 100; Labor: 95; Choice: 44
    Maurice Hinchey: Defense: C+; Seniors: 100; Environment: 100; Labor: 99; Choice: 100
    Brian Higgins: Defense: A-; Seniors: 100; Environment: 92; Labor: 87; Choice: 100
    Louise Slaughter: Defense: B; Seniors: 100; Environment: 92; Labor: 97; Choice: 100

MUCH better, right? So, to those who see no difference between the two parties, I have to say I think you are full of it. I may not agree with all the Democrats all the time, and I particularly have problems with the likes of Towns, but by and large Democrats are much better on ALL the issues than Republiocans. Maybe Democrats can be weak at times, but to equate them with Republicans ignores the facts.

    ALL NYC EVENTS:

Get Out the Disability Vote: Now - Election Day

    From DFNYC:

About 65% of People With Disabilities do not vote - they typically get about 30-35% turnout. Roughly 20% of all voting age Americans have a disability. Most of the non-voting people with disabilities are Democrats.

This big bloc of voters can help put a candidate over the line.

Disabilities drain energy; being paralyzed, for example, is physically exhausting for anyone who tries to live an active life.

You can help a friend or family member with a disability make their voices heard on Nov. 7th.

Here are three ways you can help them cast their votes.

    1. Help register or request an absentee ballot.
About three-fourths of the disability community lacks Internet access. Take your laptop and help them register or get an absentee ballot online. Info on voter registration and absentee ballots is on the New York State Board of Elections Absentee Ballot voting page.

You can always call the NYS Board of Elections Voter Information unit at Voter Info. 1-800-458-3453 or (518) 473-5086. The main number in Albany is (518) 474-6220, with TDD 1-800-533-8683. Here's the link to the Voter Information page.

    2. Help find a ride to the polls. Contact a disability group in your area and ask about rides to the polls on Nov. 7th.

    3. Encourage your friend to vote. A little encouragement may be needed to take on the challenge of voting. You can do it.

    Thanks, and let's GOTV, together!

    MANHATTAN EVENTS:

NYC Critical Mass The last Friday of the month, every month, 7:00 p.m., starting at Union Square Park North. Come along for the ride! Critical Mass is a monthly celebration of bicycles and other nonpolluting means of transportation, exercising our right to the road. Critical Mass is a movement, not an organization; no two riders participate for exactly the same reason. New York City's first Critical Mass was in 1993.

Progressive Democrat Issue 94: NJ CONGRESSIONAL VOTING RECORD

So just above is an analysis of the voting record of all the NY State Congress critters, showing that Democrats are superior on a variety of issues. Here I want to do the same for New Jersey.

    Frank A. LoBiondo:Defense: B-; Seniors: 13; Environment: 83; Labor: 45; Choice: 0
    Jim Saxton: Defense: C; Seniors: 8; Environment: 83; Labor: 32; Choice: 0
    Christopher H. Smith: Defense: B; Seniors: 21; Environment: 92; Labor: 64; Choice: 0
    Scott Garrett: Defense: C-; Seniors: 7; Environment: 25; Labor: 13; Choice: 0
    Michael A. Ferguson: Defense: B-; Seniors: 8; Environment: 83; Labor: 23; Choice: 0
    Rodney Frelinghuysen: Defense: C+; Seniors: 4; Environment: 67; Labor: 12; Choice: 73

    Democrats:
    Frank R. Lautenberg: Defense: B+; Seniors: 96; Environment: 86; Labor: 90; Choice: 100
Robert Menendez: Defense: B; Seniors: 95; Environment: 100; Labor: 97 (from House); Choice: 100

    Robert E. Andrews: Defense: A-; Seniors: 93; Environment: 100; Labor: 89; Choice: 100
Frank Pallone, Jr.: Defense: B; Seniors: 100; Environment: 100; Labor: 92; Choice: 100
Bill Pascrell, Jr.: Defense: A- Seniors: 98; Environment: 100; Labor: 99; Choice: 80
    Steven R. Rothman: Defense: B+; Seniors: 98; Environment: 100; Labor: 95; Choice: 100
    Donald M. Payne: Defense: C; Seniors: 98; Environment: 92; Labor: 99; Choice: 100
    Rush Holt: Defense: B; Seniors: 92; Environment: 100; Labor: 91; Choice: 100

First thing I noticed compiling this is that Republicans in NJ are marginally better on the issues than Republicans in NY State. But Democrats are still, overall, better in BOTH states. Hope this is useful to you!

Progressive Democrat Issue 94: IN CONGRESSIONAL VOTING RECORD

    Republicans:

    Mike Sodrel: Defense: D; Seniors: 0; Environment: 0; Labor: 13; Choice: 0

I am struck by how dismal Indiana Republicans are. Even on defense and seniors they are just awful.

    Democrats:
    Evan Bayh: Defense: B+; Seniors: 85; Environment: 92; Labor: 91; Choice: 92

    Peter J. Visclosky: Defense: B+; Seniors: 93; Environment: 92; Labor: 93; Choice: 73
    Julia M. Carson: Defense: A-; Seniors: 100; Environment: 100; Labor: 98; Choice: 100

Such a stark difference. I like the Dems in Indiana: they seem to rock! This makes me feel that, even more than in NJ and NY, we need to defeat Republicans in Indiana. They are bad on critical issues, helping no one but Halliburton and Exxon while sacrificing labor, farmers and our soldiers for their greed. Remember that IN-2, IN-8 and IN-9 are VERY competitive. If we win those we knock out three of the worst Republicans in the House. For the good of American workers, American farmers, American seniors and American soldiers, help win Indiana in 2006.
