By all accounts John McCain had a lousy week while Barack Obama was greeted like a star by our troops and by crowds all over the world.
Here is a video from You Tube of Obama meeting the troops in Kuwait. They sure look thrilled with his presence:
There's a great round up of events in this Daily Kos diary. I am willing to bet a substantial percentage of the military vote will go Obama this year and I suspect this will not be taken into account in the polls leading up to the election.
Right now it is all about voter registration. In every single state Howard Dean's DNC and the Obama Campaign are collaborating to register millions of new voters. THAT is how we can win states that Dems haven't won for decades. Inspiration and registration.
Bush won Iowa by 10,000 votes in 2004. Dems have gained 68,000 registered voters in Iowa since then while Repubs have lost 27,000. That is a net gain of 95,000 Dem votes, nearly 10 times the number needed to flip Iowa to Obama. Pennsylvania is claimed as a swing state this year. Well, looks bleak for McCain. Kerry won Pennsylvania by 144,000 votes. Since then Dems have gained 267,000 registered voters and Repubs have LOST 221,000 voters, for a net gain of 488,000 voters for the Dems on TOP of what Kerry won by in 2004. That means Dems have a half a million voter advantage in Pennsylvania right now. The only state that Democrats have slipped in since 2004 is New Mexico where we have lost 2000 registered voters compared with the Repubs.
Alot of newly registered voters won't even be showing up much in the polls. Hispanic voters, for example, are traditionally underpolled. One million new Hispanic voters registered during the primary...and the target is for 2 million more by the general election. And polls show that Obama leads among Hispanic voters 62% to 28%. Black voter registration has skyrocketed, overwhelmingly pro-Obama. That is another traditionally underpolled group. If we keep registering new voters in state after state, we WILL win.
Sometimes I look with considerable interest at the global warming deniers because I think, for a brief moment, they may have found something of importance to say. So far, though, I always find that they are as dazed and confused as ever. This is the case with the recent salvo from self-proclaimed "rocket scientist" David Evans. David Evans claims expertise on global warming because of two things: his being a "rocket scientist" and his having previously done "carbon accounting" for the Australian government. Now ANYTIME someone tells you they are a "rocket scientist" it should be a red flag to you. I have never met anyone, including people who work for NASA, to identify themselves professionally as a "rocket scientist." Turns out Evans has a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and has not published a single peer-reviewed research paper on the subject of climate change. In fact he has published only a singlepaper in his entire career, and that was back in 1987 and had nothing to do with global warming. THis puts him on par with me vis a vis global warming: educated, smart and probably informed. I don't claim to be an expert in the field. Instead I cite experts in the field to support my claims. Evans himself claims to be an expert in the field despite having no real experience in climate change research.
Evans also claims to be a recent convert to denial, yet he is associated with an Australian global warming denial group (founded my a mining company executive) called the Lavoisier Group. Australian economist John Quiggin once commented that the Lavoisier Group is "devoted to the proposition that basic principles of physics...cease to apply when they come into conflict with the interests of the Australian coal industry." So take this mining industry connection into account when considering Evans' comments.
Look. They guy is probably smart. But engineering and bean-counting for the Australian government does NOT make you either a rocket scientist OR a climate expert.
But, he may still have a good understanding of the topic and merely be overstating his credentials. Hell, in my book, if he gets the science right then he is worth listening to even if he is being a tad untruthful about his qualifications.
Sadly, I quickly found his presentation of the science to be largely wrong. I was helped in blowing holes in his arguements by my wife (a climate sceintist at Columbia University) and this article on ScienceBlogs by Tim Lambert, a computer scientist at the University of New South Wales and hence somone with far more expertise than either David Evans or myself on computer modeling of climate. I am also trying to talk to people over at RealClimate.org, a forum for climate scientists for climate scientists, but have yet to hear back. But Tim Lambert's article essentially shows the actual data that soundly debunks Evans' claims.
Evans makes four points.
1 The greenhouse signature is missing. We have been looking and measuring for years, and cannot find it.
Each possible cause of global warming has a different pattern of where in the planet the warming occurs first and the most. The signature of an increased greenhouse effect is a hot spot about 10km up in the atmosphere over the tropics.
He makes an unsupported statement here that is the basis of this first point and probably the second point. Claiming that there is one definitive "signature" to look at is a big leap and any real scientist would give actual data for this. Specifically, anthropogenic global warming does NOT require the formation of "a hot spot about 10km up in the atmosphere over the tropics" according to my wife. She would be very interested in Evans' evidence for this, but you might notice he asserts it unsupported. That is unscientific. But what is interesting is Evans' claim for "a hot spot about 10km up in the atmosphere over the tropics" being the identifying characteristic of carbon dioxide-caused global warming is completely untrue. Tim Lambert's article shows two graphs, one based on models where carbon dioxide doubles and one based on models where solar output increases. Both show a hot spot. In reality, the defining feature of the carbon dioxide based model is stratospheric cooling. The hot spot is not the defining feature of carbon dioxide based models...stratospheric cooling is. And we have indeed detected stratospheric cooling, thus SUPPORTING the anthropogenic global warming model. In fact that stratospheric cooling for awhile masked ANOTHER prediction of the anthropogenic global warming models. The current models predict that surface warming would be accompanied by tropospheric warming. Satellite data (as I mention above) originially did not detect such a tropospheric warming. This was used by deniers as evidence against global warming, and was, in my mind, reasonable evidence. However, a couple of years ago this issue was resolved. The satellite data combined measurements from the stratosphere and troposphere in a way that was not at first appreciated, if I understand correctly. The new info came when these were separated. What was found was tropospheric warming AND stratospheric cooling, which are predictions of the current global warming models based on anthropogenic CO2 release. This is the kind of thing I mean when I say the predictions based on the anthropogenic global warming models are proving correct. Something as complex as surface warming, stratospheric cooling and tropospheric warming, have come true. By conrast the models based on increased solar output do NOT predict stratospheric cooling, so are less acurate. Evans was either showing his ignorance (being an engineer and bean-counter, not an actual climate scientist) or being outright dishonest here.
As to that hot spot (which is a more general prediction of global warming, not just carbon dioxide based global warming) this is discussed in the comments to Lambert's article: (comment by Joel Shore)
By the way, the hot spot in the upper atmosphere of the tropics is a basic result of moist adiabatic lapse rate theory, as Santer et al., [Editor's Note: See, Evans...this is what is called a citiation. Real scientists use them when arguing a point] pointed out. This is basically just a statement that when a parcel of air traveling upward in the atmosphere is saturated with water vapor, the warmer the air is to start with, the less rapidly its temperature drops as it rises through the atmosphere (because as the air expands and cools, the water vapor condenses out releasing latent heat warming the air...and more water vapor has to condense out for the warmer air than for the colder air). Because the warmer air cools more slowly, the difference in temperature gets magnified as you go up in the troposphere.
The Santer et al. paper showed that this expected magnification is in fact seen in the data for temperature fluctuations on monthly to yearly timescales. So, the observations on those timescales actually verify the model physics. It is only when one looks at the multidecadal trends in the data that one doesn't see the expected magnification (at least in some of the data sets). So, if there is any new physics coming in to mess up the agreement between models and observations, it has to come in on very long timescales...which seems rather difficult to imagine, since the convective processes that seem to be controlling the physics happen on much shorter timescales. (As a concrete example, the recent paper by Spencer et al. that purported to find some sort of negative feedback in the tropics was looking at timescales of days...so this mechanism can pretty much be immediately ruled out as a solution to such a discrepancy.)
Emphasis and Editor's Note mine.
Now turning to Evans' second point.
2 There is no evidence to support the idea that carbon emissions cause significant global warming. None. There is plenty of evidence that global warming has occurred, and theory suggests that carbon emissions should raise temperatures (though by how much is hotly disputed) but there are no observations by anyone that implicate carbon emissions as a significant cause of the recent global warming.
This is a bit silly. Or, as Lambert puts it, "outright denial." I always assert that the physics behind how any particular gas affects the absorption of heat and affects the greenhouse effect is pretty well worked out. We know that if you put more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere you WILL get warming. We have put more carbon into the atmosphere and we have seen a warming trend that matches the curve of increased CO2 very nicely. There is no other source of CO2 or methane or anything that has changed over the same time period with the same dynamics. But CO2 and warming match very well and we know the CO2 we are putting into the air. Occam's razor (NOT a scientific principle, mind you, but a convenient tool) suggests we explore the CO2 warming idea first.
Lambert, being a computer guy, goes to a comparison of warming models with and without anthropogenic factors. The blue bands on each graph show temperature changes modelled using only natural effects, while the pink bands include anthropogenic effects (the carbon dioxide we have put into the atmosphere). The black line shows actual observations (the raw data that scientists have to pay attention to). The observations fit the model where anthropogenic carbon dioxide is a factor.
This is very clear from this figure. And it is in line with the prediction from pure physics that if you pump more carbon dioxide into the air you WILL get warming. And it directly contradicts Evans' second point. Again, is this ignorance because Evans isn't an engineer and bean-counter, not a scientist, or is Evans deliberately dishonest here?
On to Evans' third point. Here he has several components, all of which are based on the criticism that the anthropogenic global warming models only use incomplete data to make their point. Again, this is demonstrably not true.
He first claims that anthropogenic global warming is based mostly on surface data and this is "corrupted" by the urban heat island effect, which is where the city itself for various reasons creates an "island" of warmth. My wife laughed at this. Simply put the "urban heat island" thing is a red herring. Climatologists have been well aware of this and have taken it into account for years now. Even I know this, so Evans certainly should. The surface measurements are NOT corrupted by the heat islands. They are corrected for it.
Then Evans makes the old arguement that satellite data doesn't support global warming. That went out the window when the stratospheric and tropospheric measurements could be properly separated, as I outline above. Since then the tropospheric and ground measurements agree well, with stratospheric cooling indicating that the warming is due to carbon dioxide.
Finally, Evans' claim that the anthropogenic global warming theory doesn't include ocean measurements is also untrue, as shown by Lambert. He points out the title of this well known NASA temperature graph:
What part of "Land-ocean" index suggests to Evans that the data only looks at land based measurements? Again, is Evans unaware of the current data or is he deliberately misleading? Onto Evans' fourth point:
4 The new ice cores show that in the past six global warmings over the past half a million years, the temperature rises occurred on average 800 years before the accompanying rise in atmospheric carbon. Which says something important about which was cause and which was effect.
My wife really laughed at this claim. No one...NO ONE claims to be able to use ice core data to pinpoint cause and effect within an 800 year time frame. Current warming of course is not judged by ice core measurements, but the half a million year record that provides context does depend on ice cores. Ice core data is not precise enough to make the claim Evans does about cause and effect. No one can say anything about which is cause and which is effect from ice cores, so his fourth point is completely invalid. Evans' claim is further refuted here. He is probably just looking at a graph without taking into account the statistical error, so he is assuming a precision of the timing of events that is misleading him. I guess that is the kind of error an engineer or accountant might make, but not a scientist.
Overall this Evans crap is no more convincing than that dumb denial "documentary" The Global Warming Swindle. I had actually hoped for better. Science is advanced by discussing and exploring alternate hypotheses. But this can only be done using an honest approach to the data. In every single case I have observed the denial lobby does not do this. Evans is one more example of that.
We all still remember the election fraud the Republicans carried out in Florida in 2000 and the probable fraud in Ohio in 2004. But even I was forgetting about the probably Republican fraud in Georgia 2002 where Democratic incumbent Max Cleland, who was 5 percentage points ahead just before election day, lost his Senate seat in an upset win for the Republicans. A very suspicious upset win.
A friend and reader reminded me of this and updated me. Some new developments have come out in the Georgia 2002 voter fraud case, and what is most interesting is that the new allegations come from a cybersecurity expert who used to work for none other than John McCain. From Raw Story:
A leading cyber-security expert and former adviser to Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) says he has fresh evidence regarding election fraud on Diebold electronic voting machines during the 2002 Georgia gubernatorial and senatorial elections.
Stephen Spoonamore is the founder and until recently the CEO of Cybrinth LLC, an information technology policy and security firm that serves Fortune 100 companies. At a little noticed press conference in Columbus, Ohio Thursday, he discussed his investigation of a computer patch that was applied to Diebold Election Systems voting machines in Georgia right before that state's November 2002 election.
Let me just say here that I publicized some Democrats who called attention to this same computer patch back in 2002. No one listend back then. But maybe a major Republican IT expert can finally get some attention to this issue. More from the same article:
Spoonamore is one of the most prominent cyber-security experts in the country. He has appeared on CNN's Lou Dobbs and ABC's World News Tonight, and has security clearances from his work with the intelligence community and other government agencies, as well as the Department of Defense, and is one of the world’s leading authorities on hacking and cyber-espionage...
Spoonamore received the Diebold patch from a whistleblower close to the office of Cathy Cox, Georgia’s then-Secretary of State. In discussions with RAW STORY, the whistleblower -- who wishes to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation -- said that he became suspicious of Diebold's actions in Georgia for two reasons. The first red flag went up when the computer patch was installed in person by Diebold CEO Bob Urosevich, who flew in from Texas and applied it in just two counties, DeKalb and Fulton, both Democratic strongholds. The source states that Cox was not privy to these changes until after the election and that she became particularly concerned over the patch being installed in just those two counties.
The whistleblower said another flag went up when it became apparent that the patch installed by Urosevich had failed to fix a problem with the computer clock, which employees from Diebold and the Georgia Secretary of State’s office had been told the patch was designed specifically to address.
The article goes on to discuss probable Republican fraund in Ohio in 2004.
I want to say thank you to Stephen Spoonamore for putting integrity before party affiliation. He joins Florida Congressional candidate Clint Curtis in this. Clint left the Republican Party after apparently being asked to help steal an election for the Republican Party even BEFORE the 2000 election. People have criticized Clint Curtis for his claims, but I think increasingly it seems he was right. The Republicans have systematically been trying to steal elections using electronic technology. Anyone who remembers Watergate won't be surprised to learn this, of course.
I covered this some time ago, but it seems worth mentioning again in light of all the other Republican fraud and lies going on out there.
There's an ad out there that is pissing off Colorado Republicans, even though all it does is tell the truth. The ad calls attention to Republican Senate candidate Bob Schaffer's connections to convicted Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff and his clients who are sweatshop owners on the Northern Mariana Islands. The U.S. government found that women employees were mistreated and abused. But Schaffer defended the sweatshops and took thousands in campaign donation from their owners. The video shows these connections:
I am always amazed at how furious Republicans become when people try to hold them accountable for their corruption. Abramoff was a major part of the Republican Party machine across the nation. Face facts! The Republican Party has to purge itself of these corrupt bastards if they don't want to be constantly attacked for corruption.
And remember, the numbers don't lie. FAR more Republicans are guilty of, indicted for, or under investigation for corruption than Democrats. Republicans like Bob Schaffer, like Alaska's Don Young and Ted Stevens, and Ohio's Bob Taft and Bob Ney, Kentucky's Ernie Fletcher, Illinois' Dennis Hastertt and Texas's Tom DeLay are all part of a Republican culture of corruption that out sleazes anything we have seen in this country since the Harding Administration. It is time to stop the corruption. Defeat Bob Schaffer by helping out Mark Udall for Colorado.

Until recently the Oregon Senate race looked like a long shot. But better fundraising numbers and nearly tied polls are indicating that Jeff Merkley now has a real shot of winning. This falls very nicely into the category of races that I like to target early, before it looks like a close race, and then watch as the Dem catches up. This strategy worked well in 2006 and is likely to work well in 2008.
The Democratic candidate for Oregon's Senate seat is Jeff Merkley. Merkley has MAJOR union support as well as the support of the Sierra Club, Planned Parenthood, 21st Century Democrats, and Council for a Livable World, among MANY others. You can read Merkley's stands on the issues here.

Here are some excellent progressive candidates in Minnesota (all endorsed by Progressive Majority):
Kevin Staunton Candidate for State Representative - District 41A (Challenger) Edina in Hennepin County
Kevin Staunton is the city attorney for Excelsior and a progressive leader running for the State House in District 41A. We recruited Kevin with the help of the local DFL party unit specifically to run for this seat. District 41A is one of the top pick-up targets in the state. In 2004, John Kerry became the first Democrat to win the district in two generations with 51.5% of the vote. Kevin's Republican opponent is unclear at this time. The nine-term moderate incumbent, Ron Erhardt, lost the GOP endorsement last month to an ultra-conservative challenger. It is unclear whether Erhardt will run in the Republican primary or whether he will run as an Independent. Kevin has been a leading advocate of progressive reforms in Minnesota, particularly through greater investment in our public schools and transportation infrastructure.
Gail Kulick Jackson Candidate for State Representative - District 16A (Challenger) Sherburne, Mille Lacs, Benton and Morrison Counties, including St. Cloud and Little Falls
Gail Kulick Jackson is an attorney in Milaca, running for the Minnesota State House in District 16A. Although Gail has been a candidate for the state House twice before (in 2004 and 2006), we actively recruited Gail to run again because of her strong progressive leadership in her community. The Republican is a six-term incumbent and is one of the most conservative members of the Minnesota House. Gail has been a progressive champion, and if elected, will work to protect civil rights and expand vital investments in the state.
Jim Godfrey Candidate for State Representative - District 17A (Challenger) Isanti and Chisago Counties, including Cambridge and North Blanco
Jim Godfrey is a teacher and Education Minnesota member from Cambridge running for the state House in District 17A. We recruited Jim with the help of Education Minnesota leaders. Jim's Republican opponent is four-term incumbent Rob Eastlund, who presents himself as a moderate but has a very conservative voting record. Several neighboring Republican incumbents have lost since 2004, and Eastlund is vulnerable as the district shifts. Jim is running to restore representation for average working Minnesotans, focusing on improving our health care affordability, ensuring high quality public schools, and protecting our environment. If elected, Jim will bring common sense and a strong union background to St. Paul.
Grace Baltich Candidate for State Representative - District 32A (Challenger) Dayton, Maple Grove and Rogers in Hennepin County
Grace Baltich is an accomplished social worker and AFSCME Council 65 member running for the state House in District 32A. Grace ran unsuccessfully in 2006. We have been working with Grace to help her create a campaign plan, a fundraising strategy and a message that will allow her to stress her strong progressive vision. Grace is committed to running a progressive campaign focused on building a strong, socially-just community for all children and families.
Mike Obermueller Candidate for State Representative - District 38B (Challenger) Farmington and Hastings in Dakota County
Mike Obermueller is an attorney from Eagan, running for the Minnesota House of Representatives in District 38B. Although Mike ran in 2006 (and lost by just 163 votes), we actively recruited him to run again, this time emphasizing his core, progressive values. We have worked with him to develop a comprehensive campaign plan, a detailed financial strategy, and a progressive message. Eagan is the home of Republican Governor Tim Pawlenty, and has been trending Democratic over the past three election cycles. The Republican three-term incumbent is increasingly vulnerable as his voting record diverges from the needs of the District, especially on education and transportation. Mike is running to help rebuild the Minnesota miracle, to ensure the economic, educational, and civic success of our state.
Jerry Pitzrick Candidate for State Representative - District 42B (Challenger) Eden Prairie in Hennepin County
Jerry Pitzrick is a civil engineer from Eden Prairie running for in District 42B. We recruited Jerry based on his active role (with his wife Deb) in the local DFL and his commitment to progressive values. With seven-term incumbent Erik Paulson running for U.S. House this year, the seat has recently become an open seat. There are two Republican challengers, neither of whom has held elective office. If elected, Jerry will be a leading voice for infrastructure investments and a progressive tax system. Fielding a candidate in this race continues our work in Eden Prairie - we successfully ran Kim Ross in 2007, who is now a leading member of the Eden Prairie School Board.
Ted Butler Candidate for State Representative - District 49A (Open Seat) Andover and Ham Lake in Anoka County
Ted Butler works at the University of Minnesota managing the finances of its self-insured employee health plan, and is running for the open seat in District 49A. During the buildup of his campaign, the Republican incumbent decided not to run for re-election, creating an open seat. The Republican candidate to succeed the incumbent is ultra-conservative Peggy Scott, who is running as a self-described tax watchdog. Ted has already been debating her for several years - they both serve on the Andover Parks Commission. Ted will be a champion for progressive values, working to ensure that all families are treated fairly and that the time tax caused by failing roads and bridges is properly mitigated.
Danna Elling-Schultz Candidate for Hastings City Council - Ward 4 (Incumbent)
Danna Elling-Schultz is a DFL researcher in the Minnesota Senate and a candidate for re-election to the City Council of Hastings. Danna has been a long-standing champion for public education funding and smart investment in suburban communities. If re-elected, she will continue to work against unfettered development and ensure fair and equal treatment of families in Hastings.

VIRGINIA FOCUS: Blogs, Obama, Sustainable Agriculture, Alternative Energy, Groups and Events
VIRGINIA ACT BLUE SITE: Help turn Virginia even more blue. Since 2005 Virginia has been trending blue, and we can continue that trend. Virginia is important in winning back the Senate, and I believe it might even be a swing state in the Presidential race. There are at least THREE key House races in Virginia this year. The DCCC is targeting VA-11, where the incumbent Repub is one of nearly 30 Republicans to retire, making it an open seat, VA-02, where the Repub incumbent won by LESS THAN 5%, and VA-10. Looking pretty good! And I am starting to read VERY promising things about VA-5. I believe all four of these are winnable and I predict we will win at least two of them...more if we push hard.
Virginia Sustainable Agriculture Organizations and Publications: Whether you're a beginning farmer, or an experienced agricultural producer interested in transitioning to more sustainable practices, you may want to start by learning more about the principles of sustainable agriculture and some of the "systems" approaches associated with it.

VPLC also assists low-income Virginians and Legal Aid Programs with legislative and administrative proposals affecting the poor in Virginia as well as providing technical assistance, training and publications to Virginia's Legal Aid Programs in the following substantive areas: Consumer, Elder Rights, Family, Health Care, Housing & Public Benefits.

Governors Debate Biofuels (and a reminder of my own view on biofuels). Seems to me oil and coal producing states are pushing to stop biofuels, corn and soy producing states want biofuels based on corn and soy, and wood producing states want biofuels based on wood. No surprise there. But we really do need a smart policy here.

NORTH CAROLINA BLOGGING: BlueNC is a community-driven website that promotes progressive values and policies in North Carolina.
Here is a mini-documentary on Wind Power in Appalachia:
Governors Debate Biofuels (and a reminder of my own view on biofuels). Seems to me oil and coal producing states are pushing to stop biofuels, corn and soy producing states want biofuels based on corn and soy, and wood producing states want biofuels based on wood. North Carolina is a Senate battleground this year. We have a pretty good shot at winning. Dole has shown a pretty dismal record if you look carefully, as this person does. Here is Kay Hagan, the Democratic candidate for Senate in North Carolina, discussing energy policy and jobs:
I notice Hagan's campaign seems extremely well organized, which will really increase her chances of winning. You can help in many ways by signing up here. Even if you aren't in North Carolina you can help by phone banking from home (a strategy that worked extremely well in a NY State Congressional race in 2006!)
Next let me highlight Larry Kissell, running for Congress. Larry almost certainly won in 2006, but voter fraud that lost thousands of votes, probably stealing the election. Kissell is runnig again and is very likely to win. He was a Textile Worker for 27 years and is now a teacher at East Montgomery High School. Sounds like an ideal Democrat! And Larry Kissell seems to be doing excellently in fundraising.
Come one, come all and help us celebrate Barack's democratic nomination victory! There will be food, live music including The Watercolors and The Future Kings of Nowhere, storytellers, games, face painting...you name it! It will be great for all the volunteers and their families to come together and show that we're "fired up" for the last critical weeks of the campaign that will lead to the White House! We hope that you will join us in this celebration to show your love and support for Barack Obama. Please RSVP so we know how many are coming for food, etc. Questions? Until January of 2008, Chris held the position of District Director in the office of Congressman Chet Edwards, a senior member of Congress who represents the 17th District of Texas and is the influential chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs. As District Director, Chris supervised three offices and a staff of ten and oversaw all district operations, including constituent services, outreach and special projects in the sprawling, 12-county district.
Chris has also managed Edwards’ last four highly competitive and successful re-election campaigns, during which he was recognized for his leadership ability and organizational skills in the midst of challenging circumstances. So he knows what he is doing.
Diana Maldonado is another candidate running in Texas, for HD 52.
Diane worked full-time at the Texas Comptroller’s Office as a single mother, something that shows considerable determination and skill. She has won awards for her work with the Texas Comptroller’s Office, indicating further her skills and efficiency. She has been on the Forest Creek Elementary PTA, and served as President of the Round Rock ISD Board of Trustees so is an excellent advocate for education. Her main issues are education and transportation. You can volunteer to help here.
Nick Lampson for TX-22: This is a district we have to defend against a fierce Republican attempt to retake it...and it is one we really want to hold onto for symbolic reasons. This WAS Tom DeLay's district. Nick Lampson won, in part, because in 2006 his opponent had to run a write-in campaign as a result of a court decision that did not allow DeLay to change his residence to Virginia and get off the ballot. This time Lampson will face a serious challenge in this heavily Republican district from Pete Olson, chief-of-staff for Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX). I do not agree with Lampson on all issues. He is conservative, but this is one of the most heavily Republican districts in the country with a Democratic congressman and is probably the GOP's best pickup opportunity for 2008. Let's defend it. Lampson is better than any Republican who would win the district and on some issues he is excellent (e.g. NASA funding, Veterans issues, education funding...).
Texas is a Senate battleground this year. Rick Noriega is the Democratic Nominee for Senate. The latest from Rick Noriega's campaign is extremely encouraging:
While U.S. Senate Candidate and Lt. Col. Rick Noriega (D-TX) was on Active Duty, With Supporters' Help Rick Soared to Top Online Recipient Nationwide
HOUSTON, TX – U.S. Senator Jim Webb, a distinguished Vietnam veteran and a Senator known for fighting to give today's war veterans the benefits they deserve, joining with Senator Jon Tester (D-MT), a member of the Senate's Veterans Committee, and supporters to exceed fundraising goals and build momentum for Noriega's U.S. Senate bid while he was on active duty with the Texas Army National Guard June 1- 13.
While Rick was serving his country, supporters of his bid for Senate, including Senators Webb and Tester, his wife and prominent Texans (see full list here) launched the "Fill Rick's Boots Campaign" which was a resounding success. The "Fill Rick's Boots" program exceeded the campaign's original fundraising goal by more than $25,000. During the Fill Rick's Boots campaign, donors gave more than $75,000 to Rick's Senate campaign elevating him to the position of top recipient on ActBlue.com – the online clearinghouse for Democratic fundraising.
