Progressive Democrat Issue 177

By all accounts John McCain had a lousy week while Barack Obama was greeted like a star by our troops and by crowds all over the world.

There's a great round up of events in this Daily Kos diary. I am willing to bet a substantial percentage of the military vote will go Obama this year and I suspect this will not be taken into account in the polls leading up to the election.

Want a reason to work hard for Obama? It's all about the kids. Stories like this one from Daily Kos keep circulating. Obama is inspiring the next generation like no other politician alive today. Add that to the story I highlighted recently telling the story of a Republican converted to Dem by Obama and Obama seems to be inspiring people across the political spectrum.

Right now it is all about voter registration. In every single state Howard Dean's DNC and the Obama Campaign are collaborating to register millions of new voters. THAT is how we can win states that Dems haven't won for decades. Inspiration and registration.

In state after state, Dem registration is up and Repub registration down. Some examples:

Bush won Iowa by 10,000 votes in 2004. Dems have gained 68,000 registered voters in Iowa since then while Repubs have lost 27,000. That is a net gain of 95,000 Dem votes, nearly 10 times the number needed to flip Iowa to Obama. Pennsylvania is claimed as a swing state this year. Well, looks bleak for McCain. Kerry won Pennsylvania by 144,000 votes. Since then Dems have gained 267,000 registered voters and Repubs have LOST 221,000 voters, for a net gain of 488,000 voters for the Dems on TOP of what Kerry won by in 2004. That means Dems have a half a million voter advantage in Pennsylvania right now. The only state that Democrats have slipped in since 2004 is New Mexico where we have lost 2000 registered voters compared with the Repubs.

Alot of newly registered voters won't even be showing up much in the polls. Hispanic voters, for example, are traditionally underpolled. One million new Hispanic voters registered during the primary...and the target is for 2 million more by the general election. And polls show that Obama leads among Hispanic voters 62% to 28%. Black voter registration has skyrocketed, overwhelmingly pro-Obama. That is another traditionally underpolled group. If we keep registering new voters in state after state, we WILL win.
