Mole's Progressive Democrat

The Progressive Democrat Newsletter grew out of the frustration of the 2004 election. Originally intended for New York City progressives, its readership is now national. For anyone who wants to be alerted by email whenever this newsletter is updated (usually weekly), please send your email address and let me know what state you live in (so I can keep track of my readership).

    Progressive Democrat Issue 204

The Republican Party had a little internal power struggle that actually is really quite pathetic. Seems blowhard Rush Limbaugh thinks RNC chair Michael Steele is a traitor because he is trying to steer a more moderate course. Rush wants Steele to join in his expressions of hope that America's recovery fails because he doesn't want Obama to look good. Steele responded by saying he, not Rush, was the head of the Republican Party and that no one should wish America fails. This simple statement sent Rush and his fanatics into spasms of red-faced rage, some of it becoming outright racism (as discussed in this Daily Kos diary chronicling some of the more virulent Republican racism levelled at Obama and Steele). In the end, Steele, the actual guy with a leadership position in the Republican Party and the guy who is trying to be moderate, surrendered and grovelled at Limbaugh's feet. So the Republican Party remains the party that wishes for America to fail.

It's just embarassing to see what fools these people are. First off, they are fighting over whether to commit political suicide or not. Then when someone argues that they shouldn't commit political suicide, he gets attacked by a draft dodging, chicken hawk drug addict. And the party chooses to support the draft dodging, chicken hawk drug addict over the person saying their party shouldn't commit political suicide.

These guys are just too stupid for words. And that is even before considering the terrified, whining racism that they also engage in on the right wing blogs.

Look. As far as I am concerned, if the rump end of the Republican Party wants to keep following fools like Rush into well deserved oblivion, fine with me. Go ahead. Commit political suicide. Just don't expect the rest of America to follow you.

And as a reminder of the real, practical differences between the two parties: Democrats are better for the economy. Period. I have discussed this before. Here is one more clear piece of evidence for this. Job growth under Democrats is always better than under Republicans since WW II:

Meanwhile, Howard Dean is doing what I expected him to do once he left the DNC (fulfilling, as I remember, his promise to only stay in one term): he is returning to take the helm of Democracy for America again. People are welcoming him back with a donation to DFA (I joined in). The leadership of Howard Dean, along with that of many other Democrats including Obama himself, are what has led to the success of the Democratic Party staring in 2006. Let's keep it together while the Republicans fall apart in pathetic internal power struggles over who can be more anti-American than the next right wing fanatic.

And, for those who missed it, Jon Stewart had a segment slamming CNBC for being, in essence, blowhards who get pretty much every bit of economic prediction dead wrong:

But all of this was almost a moot point. Turns out while we all bickered and watched the continuing fallout from the Bush economy, earth was nearly slammed by an asteroid that could have had devastating consequences. It was about the size of the famous boject that hit Tunguska, Siberia. We are not talking something like Deep Impact, but if it had hit earth, it would have made all our economic problems seem kind of trivial. How close did it come? Well, you know those satellites that send your TV signal to your home? The asteroid was only twice the distance out from earth as those satellites. That is about one fifth the distance to the moon. THAT is considered a very close encounter. Here is some video of it...really cool if you think about what it is, but also kind of underwhelming if you are expecting flashy special effects. Yes...it is that dot that moves across the sky:
