    Progressive Democrat Issue 186

This was the moment that John McCain sealed not just his fate, but the fate of the Republican Party this year. There will be no comeback in 2008:

John McCain cedes the "health" of the mother to the Democratic Party, thus alienating women voters. But I see something deeper in this clip. It cedes "health" altogether. It admits that to the Republican party, the healthcare crisis is not of concern to them. "Health" is, to McCain and the Republican Party, so unimportant that it gets put into finger quotes. John McCain has just defined "health" as nothing but a rhetorical talking point.

And herein lies a sharp difference between the two political parties. To the Republican Party, the "health of the mother," "healthcare" and the related "healthcare crisis," "education," "farmers," "environment," "Joe six pack," "Joe the plumber," etc. are all rhetorical talking points, not real issues to be solved with real solutions. In the end the Republican Party has no interest in these issues other than using them as rhetoric. To the Republican Party, to the degree they are interested in ANY of these issues, these offer only opportunities to give big business more money. "Health," "education," "housing," the whole agenda that average Americans worry about daily are handed over to the highest bidder. Republicans don't care about solving these issues, they care only about exploiting them politically and financially. That is why they never even ATTEMPT to solve them and stand in the way of any real solution. The only "solution" they ever offer is tax cuts to the rich and to big business. That is it.

The Democratic Party, by sharp contrast, views these key issues not just as exploitable rhetorical talking points, but as genuine problems requiring genuine solutions. From FDR's New Deal to LBJ's Great Society, real solutions that affected real people have been the expertise of the Democratic Party. Even with issues like the deficit, the Republican Party has talked "fiscal responsibility" constantly since Reagan, but has also constantly run the highest deficits in American history through three presidencies and 12 years of Republican control of the White House. Even "fiscal responsibility" is a rhetorical talking point to be exploited while the Republicans really do nothing but help the rich while the middle class and working class drown.

Yes, the word is drown. Figuratively and, in the case of Hurricane Katrina, literally. "Drown" was the word used by Grover Norquist when he defined the Republican ideology:

"I don't want to abolish government. I simply want to reduce it to the size where I can drag it into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub."

This statement has been the basis of Republican policy. Norquist went into more detail:

"Cutting the government in half in one generation is both an ambitious and reasonable goal," Norquist stated in May 2000. "If we work hard we will accomplish this and more by 2025. Then the conservative movement can set a new goal. I have a recommendation: To cut government in half again by 2050"

What are the consequences of this extreme right-wing "Drown Government in a Bathtub" doctrine? You drown AMERICA along with it. You drown real life Americans.

To Republicans government has no role in our lives. Levees are not maintained. Bridges are not maintained. "Infrastructure" is a rehtorical talking point which is in reality underfunded to the point where levees break and bridges collapse. And Americans drown for real.

Your health, my health and our children's health don't matter. "Health" is a rehtorical talking point which is in reality left to a so-called business model which gives us some of the most expensive and least effective healthcare in the modern world. We pay the most yet the quality of care is on par with, I kid you not, Albania and Slovenia. And the fact that Republicans want to apply this same failed business model to education shows that "education" is also merely a rehtorical talking point that in reality will be sold to the highest bidder with no concern for the realities of education.

Republicans want to drown government even if drowns Americans...but they then advocate government invasion of our privacy on all levels.

This is why McCain reflexively put "health" in quotes. You care about the health of your children. McCain merely wants to exploit it for political and financial purposes. The actual quality of your child's health means NOTHING to John McCain.

Barack Obama offers explicit solutions on a myriad of issues. He begins with a real energy policy and a real offer of tax cuts for those who have carried an increasing tax burden under Republican Presidents, the poor and middle classes, while increasing taxes on those who have carried a decreasing tax burden under Republican Presidents, the richest 10%. He even offers an explicit Economic Recovery Plan for the Middle Class that you can look at and review.

Obama and most Democrats still focus on the so-called business model, but do not view it as the one and only tool available to solve our problems. Obama and the Democrats see government as actually GOVERNING the nation, not drowning it the way Grover Norquist promised and America witnessed after Katrina.

I hear over and over from Greens and Independents that there is "no difference" between the Democrats and Republicans. This is demonstrably untrue. You can argue that there is not ENOUGH of a difference at times, but you cannot argue that there is no difference. And the difference was illustrated in the final debate of 2008. To Republicans, all the problems that American citizens face every day are rehtorical talking points put in quotes, and all they care about is a right wing ideology that drowns government until Americans drown but put government police in your bedroom to regulate who you have sex with and what you do with your body. Republicans are ideologues. Democrats view our problems as requiring solutions, as real, tangible issues that require practical solutions. Democrats roll up their sleeves and seek practical solutions. From the deficit (eliminated only under a Democratic President) to education and healthcare, OUR issues are DEMOCRATIC issues.

How does this affect the outcome of the election? When push comes to shove and Americans are feeling the consequences of the Republican "Drown America" ideology, they turn to Democrats to solve their problems.

Let me quote from an Oct. 13th entry (BEFORE the last debeate) on an openly pro-Republican polling website regarding the state of the election:

Honestly, though, an Obama landslide is becoming more and more likely by the day. Let's take stock for a moment where we stand. Seven states representing 96 electoral votes are in the "Weak Obama" category this morning. All were Bush states in 2004. Even if McCain were to somehow win every one of those seven states, he'd still come up short, 265-274. To win the presidency, he'd have to add another state. But the prospects are virtually non-existent. Obama's lead in the rest of the states in his column is at least 5 points. And as an indication of just how strong Obama's advantage is right now, all but two Kerry states in 2004 are projected to stay with the Democrats by double-digits. The other two, Wisconsin and Minnesota, show Obama ahead by nine.

I keep thinking the race will tighten...and I do see ways in which Obama's comanding lead could start to fall apart. But McCain is running out of time and there are signs that Obama hasn't even begun his full voter outreach effort. McCain continues to fade and Obama continues to surge...which makes a turn around increasingly unlikely.

Next he turns to the situation in the Senate races:

The gloom for the GOP is not confined to the presidential race. Indeed the most eyebrow-raising outcome of this election may come from the Senate...

Three weeks out, I see the Democrats picking up a minimum of four seats - CO, NH, NM, VA. Four more look like toss-ups - AK, MN, NC, OR. Still others are vulnerable if the Democrats can get their vote out - GA, KY and MS (special). That's eleven seats in play. A filibuster-proof Senate is the prize if the Democrats can win nine of those eleven.

I think Democrats probably won't win nine of those eleven seats...but they do have a shot at it. But you and I need to work a bit harder at it. I think it will require considerable effort and money to win those 9 Senate seats. But we are probably going to win at least 6. Maybe only 4 if we let this opportunity pass.

Next the Republican polling site turns to the Governor races. Here it look like a break even year, but again Democrats have the momentum:

month ago, Republicans could look at the balance of power in governorships as a bight spot. However, over the last two weeks, both their projected pickups - North Carolina and Washington - have returned to the Democratic column.

I think both North Carolina and Washington State remain long shots for Democrats, but not distant longshots. We have to GOTV big time in both states to hold on to those Governorships. If you live in either state, please do your part! Missouri is our big pick up chance this year. We are consistently polling ahead in Missouri, but again, I suspect we need a very strong GOTV effort to win. So, if you live in Missouri, your efforts are needed big time.

Finally, this relatively wise Republican reflects on the House:

A significant decrease in GOP influence in the House is in store if Election Projection's current numbers hold true. The host of projected losses numbers a full dozen this morning. This week's update sees a net of two more House seats switch to the Democrats, bringing the projected count to 248-187.

So, if this Republican, and honestly I have been following his stuff since 2006 and find him worth reading even though I often disagree with him, is correct, it will be an all out, knock down victory for Democrats this year and a full speed rout for Republicans. Be a part of it!

This week I discuss the "gentleman" who started the "Obama is a Muslim" lie (hint: he's another anti-Semite that Fox News latched onto!), I focus on the latest Planned Parenthood opposition to Palin, I review McCain's ironic anti-Veteran history, and I once again discuss election protection (the secretary of state project).

Right Wing Idiocy: Obama as Muslim...and "exterminate Jew power"

In my continuing coverage of Republican racism and anti-Semitism, one of the stupidest Republican memes was "gee, uh, duh, isn't Obama a Moooslim?"

My first reaction was "so what if he was?" Why couldn't a Muslim be an American leader? But that is beside the point. There has never, ever been the slightest evidence that Obama was Muslim.

Those who listen to this lie and believe it are, quite honestly, abyssmally stupid or amazingly gullible.

But who originated the "duh...Obama is a Moooslim" lie?

Seems an unstable anti-Semite, named Andy Martin, started it. And Fox News let this unstable anti-Semite assert lies without questioning him...yet another connection between Fox News, lies, and anti-Semitism.

Andy Martin's admission to the bar was blocked due to “moderately severe character defect manifested by well-documented ideation with a paranoid flavor and a grandiose character.” Andy Martin has run both as a Democrat and as a Republican, yet it should be noted that no Democrat quotes him or listens to his lies, while Fox News and many McCain supporters pay close attention to him, seemingly without applying even minimal logical skepticism. Jerome Corsi even starts his now discredited book about Obama with a quote from Andy Martin, and many Republicans ate it up.

According to the NY Times, when Andy Martin ran for Congress in Connecticut, he listed as one reason for his run was “to exterminate Jew power.”

In a 1983 bankruptcy case Andy Martin called the judge “a crooked, slimy Jew who has a history of lying and thieving common to members of his race.”

In 1983, Mr. Martin wrote, “I am able to understand how the Holocaust took place, and with every passing day feel less and less sorry that it did.”

THIS is who Fox News and Jerome Corsi and many Republicans are listening to. Paranoia and anti-Semitism seem perfectly accpetable to right wing Republicans these days.

So, to anyone who repeats the "duh, Obama is a Moooslim" lie to you, point out to them that this lie was started by an unstable anti-Semite who wants to "exterminate Jew power." See what they think then.

    Planned Parenthood Blasts Palin Again

Planned Parenthood is airing this ad focusing on Sarah Palin's forcing rape victims to pay for their own rape kit.

    From the script:

"Under Mayor Sarah Palin, women like Gretchen were forced to pay up to $1,200 for the emergency exams used to prosecute their attackers," the announcer says, after a heartbreaking testimonial from a woman talking about her own experience of being raped. "In the Senate, John McCain voted against legislation to protect women from these same heartless policies.

Which brings up the email from Planned Parenthood I highlighted in September. Let me repost that message:

    Dear Sarah Palin,

    You are not our candidate.

You are not our candidate because you required women in Wasilla to pay for their own medical examinations after being raped.

You are not our candidate because you do not support a woman's right to choose, even in the case of rape or incest.

You are not our candidate because you've cut funding for teen moms and comprehensive sex education, while promoting failed abstinence-only programs.

You are not our candidate because, as vice president — a heartbeat away from the presidency — you would jeopardize health care for women everywhere.

We are teachers, doctors, athletes, programmers, artists, lawyers, secretaries, CEOs, students, designers, nurses, factory workers, mothers, and fathers. We are conservatives and liberals, Democrats and Republicans, country and city people. We are women and men. We are voters. We are the Planned Parenthood Action Fund.

We believe in a woman's right to choose and the right of every person to have access to complete reproductive health care. We are hundreds of thousands strong, and we are doing everything we can to make sure you are not elected.

    You are not our candidate.

And on a related note, a group I have never heard of before put out this DEVASTATING ad:

There has been some talk of Sarah Palin drawing women voters away from Obama and closing the gender gap between the parties. I don't believe this will happen to any substantial degree. Why would any woman who isn't already a right wing idealogue vote for people like McCain-Palin who want to take away her rights, oppose equal pay for equal work, oppose choice, and even punish rape victims? Answer: they WON'T.

The Real McCain Record: Typical Anti-Veteran Republican

I have been discussing this for some time: John McCain and most Republicans are blatantly anti-Veteran. The facts are now becoming more widely known. This comes from Daily Kos:

This comes right from Project Vote Smart [Editor's note: a nonpartisan group]. These are veterans' interest group ratings [Editor's note: also nonpartisan groups] of John McCain. You be the judge as to whether or not John McCain is a friend of our veterans.

2006 Senator McCain supported the interests of the Disabled American Veterans 20 percent in 2006.

2006 In 2006 Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America gave Senator McCain a grade of D.

2006 Senator McCain sponsored or co-sponsored 18 percent of the legislation favored by the The Retired Enlisted Association in 2006.

2005 Senator McCain supported the interests of the Disabled American Veterans 25 percent in 2005.

2004 Senator McCain supported the interests of the Disabled American Veterans 50 percent in 2004.

2004 Senator McCain supported the interests of the The Retired Enlisted Association 0 percent in 2004.

2003-2004 Senator McCain supported the interests of the Vietnam Veterans of America 100 percent in 2003-2004.

2003 Senator McCain supported the interests of the The American Legion 50 percent in 2003.

2001 Senator McCain supported the interests of the Vietnam Veterans of America 46 percent in 2001.

1999 Senator McCain supported the interests of the Disabled American Veterans 66 percent in 1999.

1997-1998 Senator McCain supported the interests of the Vietnam Veterans of America 0 percent in 1997-1998.

1989-1990 On the votes that the Vietnam Veterans of America considered to be the most important in 1989-1990 , Senator McCain voted their preferred position 50 percent of the time.

I don't think veterans will be saying "thank you" to John McCain anytime soon. This year, arguably the most important legislation regarding veterans was the passage of a new G.I. Bill. The U.S. Senate passed the G.I. Bill without McCain voting on the bill...

UPDATE: McCain's voting record on veterans' issues shows us what we already know. If you look at the votes, you will see three votes where he voted against waving the Budget Act which would increase funding and adjust for inflation. Two of those would have provided more funding to veterans and would have invested more money in veterans' health care.

John McCain: just another anti-Veteran Republican.

ELECTION PROTECTION: The Secretary of State Project

This is a repeat of a couple of weeks ago...and is very important for us to focus on to preserve American elections.

I was pushing this back in 2006, but only recently came back to it. Given the probably stolen elections in FL in 2000, GA Senate in 2002, Ohio in 2004, and Florida and North Carolina in 2006 (2 Congressional races), it seems our election system has some pretty serious problems and/or corruption in it. Even a Republican cybersecurity expert has said that it is probable that some of these elections were fraudulent. In each state there is an election board and a secretary of state which are supposed to deal with these problems and keep our elections running fairly and smoothly. But corrupt Republican secretaries of state (like Katherine Harris and Ken Blackwell) and partisan election boards have helped steal elections. We need honest secretaries of state. That is the focus of the Secretary of State Project, started in 2006. The Secretary of State Project was created by concerned citizens to provide an easy-to-use, low-cost vehicle for online donations to key Secretary of State races.

In 2006, their first year, they won 5 out of the seven secretary of state races they targeted, including the critical swing states of Iowa, New Mexico, Nevada, Minnesota, and even the key swing state of Ohio. We are better assured of fair elections in these critical states thanks to new, more honest secretaries of state. Jennifer Brunner in Ohio is winning awards for her reforms and she is even standing up to recent attempts at voter suppression by Republicans in Ohio. I believe that the efforts of the Secretary of State Project are critical in restoring democracy in America. Arguably more important even than winning the Presidency, though they go hand in hand.

This year they are targeting four states. Here is their rundown of their 2008 efforts, from their website:

Building on our successful model in 2006, the SoS Project is strategically focusing on a handful of key races this year - including county-level races. Our goal is to ensure fair, clean elections in 2008 and beyond.

There are two states we are targeting with open races for Secretary of State in 2008: Oregon and West Virginia. In Oregon, Democrat Kate Brown is running against GOP nominee Rick Dancer. In West Virginia, Natalie Tennant won the Democratic primary on May 13, despite being outspent 6 to 1 by her competitor. She is now fighting for the seat currently occupied by Betty Ireland, a partisan Republican who is currently working hard to oppose Election Day Registration.

In Montana, Democrat Linda McCulloch is trying to unseat ultra-conservative Brad Johnson. Johnson has been involved in an attempt by conservatives to rollback the state's Election Day Registration laws.

We are also working to protect the seat of a progressive Secretary of State in the key battleground state of Missouri. Democrat Robin Carnahan is a strong reformer who should win reelection. But given the importance of a fair election in Missouri, we need to be vigilant in this state.

Not all the action is happening at the state level. This year, the Secretary of State Project will also help elect reform-minded Democrats to key county-level posts in battleground states. A number of stark examples from 2004 and 2000, like Cuyahoga Co. in Ohio and Broward Co. in Florida, prove that manipulative county-level elections officials can exert a tremendous amount of influence over their results. Removing Republican operatives in three or four key counties could have a profound effect on the election. County-level targeting will be announced soon.

If you have suggestions about what 2008 races we should get involved in, email us at secstateproject - at - gmail - dot - com.

Help them out. Our democracy depends on it.

NORTH CAROLINA FOCUS: Blogs, Candidates, Alternative Energy, Groups and Events

North Carolina is a Senate battleground this year and we have a pretty good shot at winning. Dole has shown a pretty dismal record if you look carefully, as this person does.

Kay Hagen has recently been running consistently ahead of Dole, even if it just by a few points. I think we can win this one! From Hagen's website:

Kay Hagen is being endorsed from ALL around the state:

Charlotte Observer: Hagan better choice for U.S. Senate seat

Asheville Citizen-Times Editorial Endorsement: Hagan will give N.C. a better voice in the Senate

North Carolina Association of Educators Endorses Kay Hagen

Greensboro News and Record Editorial: Hagan’s track record recommends election

You can read about Kay Hagen's farm policy here.

I notice Hagan's campaign seems extremely well organized, which will really increase her chances of winning. You can help in many ways by signing up here. Even if you aren't in North Carolina you can help by phone banking from home (a strategy that worked extremely well in a NY State Congressional race in 2006!)

Next let me highlight Larry Kissell, running for Congress. Larry almost certainly won in 2006, but voter fraud that lost thousands of votes lost him the election. What is most disturbing is that most of those votes that were "lost" were military voters! Kissell is runnig again and is very likely to win. He was a Textile Worker for 27 years and is now a teacher at East Montgomery High School. Sounds like an ideal Democrat!

You can find out more about Larry Kissell and help out here.

Now let me highlight Roy Carter, running for the NC-5 Congressional seat. Here is Roy Carter's latest video:

    From Roy's website:

Roy Carter has dedicated his life thus far to educating young people, motivating them to achieve their goals and being a positive, affirming influence in their lives. Throughout his career as Educator, Football Coach and Athletic Director, Roy has always considered community involvement crucial to student success. Leading by example, he has consistently volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, working to build homes for hard working families. Through his leadership and innovation several student and community programs were created to combat drop-out rates, drug and alcohol abuse, and illiteracy. In 1997, one such program was instrumental in Andrews High School naming Roy as its Teacher of the Year. Roy has been a member of the North Carolina Coaches Association for over thirty years, being chosen as Conference Coach of the Year in 1993 and Coach for the annual East / West All-Star game in 1998. Additionally, Roy has been actively involved in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, and was elected to the North Carolina High School Association Re-Alignment Committee in 1999, receiving the Merit Award and receiving the Award of Achievement in 1995.

After many years as a science teacher, Roy transitioned into teaching agricultural science and woodworking. In-between the various family, religious, and community activities, Carter maintains a crop of 4,000 Fraser Firs.

Carter's opponent, Virginia Foxx, is one of the infamous Katrina 11, Republicans who vote for no-bid contracts for the corrupt Halliburtion but opposed aid to the victims of Katrina. I have been targeting the Katrina 11 ever since their infamous opposition to helping Katrina victims. Not only is Foxx one of only 11 Republicans who opposed helping Katrina victims, she also is one of only 33 Republicans who opposed extension of the Voting Rights Act in July 2006. He biggest contribution to American law making was to introduce an act to praise the Christmas Tree industry. So she loves Christmas trees but hates black people and refuses to help Americans in need.

If you live in the district, please volunteer to help Roy Carter for Congress. And if you don't live in the district, please help out with a contribution through my Katrina 11 Act Blue Site.

MINNESOTA FOCUS: Blogs, Al Franken, Progressive Candidates, The Minnesota Project, Drinking Liberally

Al Franken, is running for Senate in Minnesota and is one of the key progressives we have to elect. Al Franken has pulled AHEAD of Coleman in three recent polls.

Here is An Economic Recovery Plan For Minnesota Families

Here is Al Franken speaking on energy policy:

And find out about Norm Coleman's poor job in holding government accountable:

You can go here to learn more about Al Franken for Senate.

Here are some excellent progressive candidates in Minnesota (all endorsed by Progressive Majority):

    Kevin Staunton
Candidate for State Representative - District 41A (Challenger)
    Edina in Hennepin County

Kevin Staunton is the city attorney for Excelsior and a progressive leader running for the State House in District 41A. We recruited Kevin with the help of the local DFL party unit specifically to run for this seat. District 41A is one of the top pick-up targets in the state. In 2004, John Kerry became the first Democrat to win the district in two generations with 51.5% of the vote. Kevin's Republican opponent is unclear at this time. The nine-term moderate incumbent, Ron Erhardt, lost the GOP endorsement last month to an ultra-conservative challenger. It is unclear whether Erhardt will run in the Republican primary or whether he will run as an Independent. Kevin has been a leading advocate of progressive reforms in Minnesota, particularly through greater investment in our public schools and transportation infrastructure.

Click here to support and learn more about Kevin.

    Gail Kulick Jackson
Candidate for State Representative - District 16A (Challenger)
Sherburne, Mille Lacs, Benton and Morrison Counties, including St. Cloud and Little Falls

Gail Kulick Jackson is an attorney in Milaca, running for the Minnesota State House in District 16A. Although Gail has been a candidate for the state House twice before (in 2004 and 2006), we actively recruited Gail to run again because of her strong progressive leadership in her community. The Republican is a six-term incumbent and is one of the most conservative members of the Minnesota House. Gail has been a progressive champion, and if elected, will work to protect civil rights and expand vital investments in the state.

Click here to support and learn more about Gail.

    Jim Godfrey
Candidate for State Representative - District 17A (Challenger)
Isanti and Chisago Counties, including Cambridge and North Blanco

Jim Godfrey is a teacher and Education Minnesota member from Cambridge running for the state House in District 17A. We recruited Jim with the help of Education Minnesota leaders. Jim's Republican opponent is four-term incumbent Rob Eastlund, who presents himself as a moderate but has a very conservative voting record. Several neighboring Republican incumbents have lost since 2004, and Eastlund is vulnerable as the district shifts. Jim is running to restore representation for average working Minnesotans, focusing on improving our health care affordability, ensuring high quality public schools, and protecting our environment. If elected, Jim will bring common sense and a strong union background to St. Paul.

Click here to support and learn more about Jim.

    Grace Baltich
Candidate for State Representative - District 32A (Challenger)
Dayton, Maple Grove and Rogers in Hennepin County

Grace Baltich is an accomplished social worker and AFSCME Council 65 member running for the state House in District 32A. Grace ran unsuccessfully in 2006. We have been working with Grace to help her create a campaign plan, a fundraising strategy and a message that will allow her to stress her strong progressive vision. Grace is committed to running a progressive campaign focused on building a strong, socially-just community for all children and families.

Click here to support and learn more about Grace.

    Mike Obermueller
Candidate for State Representative - District 38B (Challenger)
Farmington and Hastings in Dakota County

Mike Obermueller is an attorney from Eagan, running for the Minnesota House of Representatives in District 38B. Although Mike ran in 2006 (and lost by just 163 votes), we actively recruited him to run again, this time emphasizing his core, progressive values. We have worked with him to develop a comprehensive campaign plan, a detailed financial strategy, and a progressive message. Eagan is the home of Republican Governor Tim Pawlenty, and has been trending Democratic over the past three election cycles. The Republican three-term incumbent is increasingly vulnerable as his voting record diverges from the needs of the District, especially on education and transportation. Mike is running to help rebuild the Minnesota miracle, to ensure the economic, educational, and civic success of our state.

Click here to support and learn more about Mike.

    Jerry Pitzrick
Candidate for State Representative - District 42B (Challenger)
    Eden Prairie in Hennepin County

Jerry Pitzrick is a civil engineer from Eden Prairie running for in District 42B. We recruited Jerry based on his active role (with his wife Deb) in the local DFL and his commitment to progressive values. With seven-term incumbent Erik Paulson running for U.S. House this year, the seat has recently become an open seat. There are two Republican challengers, neither of whom has held elective office. If elected, Jerry will be a leading voice for infrastructure investments and a progressive tax system. Fielding a candidate in this race continues our work in Eden Prairie - we successfully ran Kim Ross in 2007, who is now a leading member of the Eden Prairie School Board.

Click here to support and learn more about Jerry.

    Ted Butler
Candidate for State Representative - District 49A (Open Seat)
Andover and Ham Lake in Anoka County

Ted Butler works at the University of Minnesota managing the finances of its self-insured employee health plan, and is running for the open seat in District 49A. During the buildup of his campaign, the Republican incumbent decided not to run for re-election, creating an open seat. The Republican candidate to succeed the incumbent is ultra-conservative Peggy Scott, who is running as a self-described tax watchdog. Ted has already been debating her for several years - they both serve on the Andover Parks Commission. Ted will be a champion for progressive values, working to ensure that all families are treated fairly and that the time tax caused by failing roads and bridges is properly mitigated.

Click here to support and learn more about Ted.

    Danna Elling-Schultz
Candidate for Hastings City Council - Ward 4 (Incumbent)

Danna Elling-Schultz is a DFL researcher in the Minnesota Senate and a candidate for re-election to the City Council of Hastings. Danna has been a long-standing champion for public education funding and smart investment in suburban communities. If re-elected, she will continue to work against unfettered development and ensure fair and equal treatment of families in Hastings.
