    Progressive Democrat Issue 173

Strange week. Saw my first McCain ad this week...and it is clear he is running as a Democrat. Healthcare, alternative energy, environment...all Democratic talking points. We have gone from Democrats feeling like they have to run as Repub-Lite to Republicans trying to hide behind a Democratic facade. You even have a Republican running for Senate in Oregon trying to claim (falsely) that Obama supports him. This is desperation for the Republicans! It sounds like racist attacks have failed them, though I am sure they will try more as time goes on.

Meanwhile yet more polls show Obama ahead in Virginia and Missouri, tied in Florida, AHEAD IN INDIANA (wow!) and within 1-2 points of McCain in North Carolina, Alaska and Georgia. Each and every one of these states was solid Bush in 2004. Now they are either leaning Obama or effectively tied.

In NY there have been some major developments. In the NY-13 Congressional race (where I back Steve Harrison) the Republican candidate died last weekend. Right now there is no Republican candidate for the last remaining Republican seat in NYC. This is the seat currently held by disgraced Republican Vito Fossella, who was so pro-family values he had to have two families, unbeknownst to his wife. In addition, the Republicans took another hit when long-time state senate majority leader Joe Bruno decided not to run for re-election and to step down as leader. Bruno has seemed worn out and tired. His party is slipping, he faces being in the minority by next year, and, sadly, his wife died not so long ago. In the end I think his heart is no longer in it. But it is one more sign of the NY State Republicans losing their grip.

This week I include some video of Senate candidates in states I don't normally cover. It really looks like we are likely (not possibly, but LIKELY) to flip at least 4 Senate seats from Repub to Dem this year: Virginia, New Hampshire, New Mexico and Colorado. We also have a reasonable shot at flipping Mississippi as well, for 5 very good challneges. And we also have a shot at 2-4 more including Mitch McConnell's seat in Kentucky. With some real effort we could really take over the Senate.

One problem with all this is, great though it sounds, it may be coming too late on one extremely critical issue: global warming. I have covered how the more optimistic scientists think we have 10 years (now more like 8) to deal with global warming before we are hit with the full brunt of it. That relative optimism is fading. Jim Hansen, possibly the top global warming scientist, has revised that down to one year. This is our last chance right now. This rather frightening statement is covered in some detail on Daily Kos. The statement that we have one year to deal with this gigantic problem is demoralizing, and it plays into one right wing talking point that has always struck me as stupid: well it's too late now so let's not do anything. In the Daily Kos article it addresses this right wing talking point:

Some have speculated that we have already passed tipping points, and there is nothing we can do. The first may be right (probably is, unfortunately), but I strongly disagree with the second. a) Keep in mind there are widely varying degrees of badness: 1 million people dying is very different from ten million dying, which is very different from a billion dying, which is very different from 5 billion dying, which is very different from 6 billion dying. I don't know where on this scale we fall, but I think we still very much do have the ability to keep it close to the start. So b) all these windows are closing fast. That's why Hansen-- and so many of us here on dKos-- feel such a strong sense of urgency.

I think we have a year to keep the disaster down to more the million dying mark. If we don't, as individuals and as a society, take huge steps in the next year, I believe a billion could die within the next 50 years as a very, very rough estimate. Flooding (of the scale Bangladesh sees annually), famine (already started), water shortages, spreading diseases and war will all take a large toll. And for what? What did we gain by putting it off? Nothing. Not one goddamned thing. There is no more time to debate, delay or wait for someone else to deal with it. I have said ten years so often now. But global warming accelerated this past couple of years far beyond what any models predicted. Things are worse than even some of the more pessimistic predictions and things have been accelerating. Waiting any longer means, quite simply, more and more deaths.

If you can, offset your carbon usage. I suggest either Native Energy or Carbon Fund, though I use other ways as well (like purchasing energy efficient and solar stoves for families in Darfur or Central America or Haiti...let me know if you are interested in this kind of carbon offset).

And anyone in almost any part of the United States can purchase (sometimes in a roundabout way) their home energy from renewable energy generation companies. Joy and I have been doing this through a NY State program for a few years now and the increase in our monthly bill was only a matter of pennies. You can buy green energy through this website.

    We can't wait any longer.

Stopping global warming is not just about saving the environment for the hunters, fisherman, hikers, and other outdoor enthusiasts of today and tomorrow. Global warming is a matter of national security. Will we live in a world where we must fight our neighbors for fresh water and food?

    Democrats Serve, Republicans Eat Cake

I have been covering to some degree the terrible flooding in the Midwest and describing how the levees breaking, leading to the flooding of towns and cities in Wisconsin and Iowa, are a direct result of deliberate Republican neglect of America's infrastructure. Republicans prefer giving your tax money to Halliburton, Exxon and Blackwater than using that money to fix our roads, bridges and levees.

Democrats vote for funding to maintain our infrastructure. Republicans vote against that funding. That means, when Republicans are in control, our levees, roads and bridges decay, leading to disaster. But the dedication of Democrats and the neglect by Republicans goes deeper than that.

As the floodwaters rose in the Midwst, Barack Obama grabbed a shovel and helped:

Where was McCain? Where was Bush?

Well, let's remember what Bush and McCain were doing while New Orleans flooded (we all know, but let's keep reminding ourselves):

While Bush and McCain were eating cake, Al Gore, on his own initiative and at his own expense, was mounting an actual rescue operation, helping to airlift some 270 Katrina evacuees to safety:

At the same time and afterwards, Barack Obama was working hard in the Senate, trying to get aid to the victims and support the recovery.

After Katrina, while Bush was praising FEMA's failures during the Katrina disaster, Jimmy Carter was out there helping to physically rebuild New Orleans:

Republicans eat cake while Americans drown. Democrats grab shovels, organize evacuations (at their own expense), rebuild homes and fund recovery. Who do you want running our government when disaster hits?

John McCain Opposed Flood Control Measures for Des Moines

As the flood waters recede in the Midwest, it becomes increasingly clear that this was yet ANOTHER preventable disaster that the Republicans let happen. McCain is one of many Republicans who fought tooth and nail to prevent flood control measures in the Midwest.

I already drew attention to an NPR piece on this issue to my Midwest readers, but it is worth everyone taking note that there had been clear warnings of a deteriorating flood control infrastructure for a lnog time. On June 8th, 2008, NPR ran a report on the decline of America's flood control dams (you can listen with Openplayer, I think). There has been a jump of 33% in the number of dams that are considered unsafe. Consider that as you ponder the impact of these floods.

Specifically, the Des Moines Register carried a piece on how Republicans, despite warnings from 1993 on, refused in 2007 to fund a much-needed upgrade to the levees protecting Des Moines. Many other similar upgrades were part of the same bill. McCain fiercely opposed the bill and Bush eventually vetoed it when Democrats passed it. From the Des Moines Register:

Republican presidential candidate John McCain opposed legislation last year that included money for flood control in Des Moines, which shows he is wrong to push for reforms to the congressional earmark system, a Democratic lawmaker charged Thursday.

State Sen. Jack Hatch of Des Moines said the earmarked money was needed to relieve water problems on the city's north side, which were magnified over the weekend when a levee break forced an evacuation of the Birdland area and ruined several dozen homes and businesses...

Outdated north-side levees were identified as a weak spot in the city's flood-control system as far back as 1993. The Army Corps of Engineers was granted approval to replace them, but Congress has not set aside the money needed for the project...

Hatch said members of Iowa's congressional delegation pushed to include the earmark in the massive Water Resources Development Act of 2007. It included $6.9 million for work along the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers...

President Bush eventually vetoed the bill, which authorized more than 900 navigation, flood-control and environmental projects across the country. A report on the bill said the Des Moines metropolitan area suffered more than $152 million in flood damage in 1993.

Republicans play politics with vital American infrastructure. The floods in the Midwest, the failure of the New Orleans levees, and the failure of Minnesota bridges are all just the tip of the ice berg. Failing infrastructure will haunt us for decades if we don't start rebuilding what the Republicans have neglected.

    Senate Races: Some Great Candidates

Here are some Senate candidates in states I don't usually cover.

Jehanne Shaheen, running for Senate in New Hampshire. She is 14 points ahead in polls.

Al Franken, running for Senate in Minnesota:

Tom Udall, running for Senate in New Mexico...and ahead by 28 points in the polls. YES, ahead by 28 points!

And Tom's cousin, Mark Udall, is running for Senate in Colorado:

    New York/Philadelphia Voter Regestration Effort

Effort now can win big in November. There are already voter reg
efforts in nearby states. This comes from someone at IND:

    Dear Friends,

I'm excited to announce that our first voter registration trip to
Philadelphia will take place Saturday, July 5th. I'm very pleased
that we are partnering with Pennsylvania ACORN. Upon arrival in
Philadelphia, we will report to their office for a brief training
session, after which we will be dispatched to the streets crawling
with unregistered voters eager for our assistance.

Pennsylvania has been a pivotal swing state over the last several
presidential election cycles. Indeed, Republican strategists have
made no secret that they view Pennsylvania as a key target in 2008.
We must make sure that Pennsylvania is firmly in the Obama column. At
stake is not only the White House, but most certainly the Supreme
Court, where 88 year old John Paul Stevens holds the deciding vote on
issues such as a woman's right to choose, Affirmative Action, right to
trial, and a host of other civil liberties.

We will leave New York at 8:00 am on the Apex Chinatown bus, $20 round
trip, departing from 88 East Broadway in Manhattan, returning on the
8:00 pm bus from Philadelphia. (Of course, you may return earlier or
later, if you wish.) The trip takes about two hours. You will need
to book your tickets online ASAP, as seats are on a first come first
served basis. Please use the link below to book and print your e-
Tickets. Be sure to bring your printed e-Tickets with you Saturday
    morning to board the bus.

    https://www.apexbus.com/BuyTicket.aspx?from=2&to=3&fs=7/5/2008&ts=7/5/2008&tt=2

If you cannot make the July 5th trip, but would be interested in a
trip later this summer, please let me know that, too. I will be
setting subsequent dates in the coming weeks.

    Please RSVP to this e-mail address ( nyvolunteers_at_gmail.com ) so I can
provide an accurate headcount to ACORN.

Thank you to everyone with my very best wishes,

Let me introduce you to a candidate running for Conrgess in Iowa. Becky Greenwald is running against Tom Latham (R) in the IA-04 district.

Let me quote from her website:

"In Tom Latham, we have a congressman who has continually opposed women’s reproductive rights and has given a green light and a blank check to George Bush’s war in Iraq.

Together, we will make a difference for those struggling to get by on the minimum wage.

We will make a difference for those who cannot afford access to quality healthcare.

We will make a difference for those brave men and women returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and facing life with an injury and the scars of war.

We will make a difference when we repeal the unfunded mandate known as No Child Left Behind.

We will make a difference when we invest in homegrown energy alternatives which lessen our dependence on foreign oil, clean up our environment, and put Iowans to work at high-paying jobs which can’t be outsourced and can be unionized."

Progressive Majority Endorsed Candidates in Ohio:

    Jennifer Brady
Candidate for State Representative - District 16 (Incumbent)
Bay Village, Rocky River, North Olmstead, Fairview Park

Jennifer Brady is the Representative from the 16th Ohio House District. Progressive Majority endorsed Jennifer in 2006 because of her commitment to progressive values, activism in the community, strategic mindset and strong work ethic. In 2006, Progressive Majority was one of very few organizations to support Jennifer after the House Democratic Caucus wrote off her race. Since then, we have been working closely with her on strategy, field organization and fundraising. According to the Ohio Republican Party Chairman Bob Bennett, ''The 16th District is the number-one Republican target for 2008.'' It is a must-keep if democrats are to take over the House. Traditionally, the 16th has been known as the most Republican district in Cuyahoga County, which made Jennifer's 2006 victory the pleasant surprise of the cycle for Progressives. The Republicans have recruited Nan Baker, a conservative member of the Westlake city council colloquially known as the ''Republican Jennifer Brady.'' Jennifer has been a progressive champion in the Assembly who refuses to vote against her values, thus displaying the courage and conviction that helped her win in 2006.

Click here to support and learn more about Jennifer.

    Matt Patten
Candidate for State Representative - District 18 (Open Seat)
Olmsted Falls, Olmsted Township, Berea, Strongsville, and North Royalton

Matt Patten is the Democratic candidate for the 18th Ohio State House District. Matt has a long history of activism and labor organizing and is currently a Regional Labor-Management Field Coordinator. The performance of the district is expected to improve even further as the popular Republican incumbent is jumping to the state Senate and his successor, Robert Spada, is considered far too conservative for this democratic-trending district. As a professional community organizer, Matt is a fearless champion for improving economic opportunity, education, and universal access to healthcare. He has the endorsements of local and statewide labor. This seat is a top-tier pickup in the quest for the four seats we need for a democratic majority in the Ohio House of Representatives.

WISCONSIN ACT BLUE SITE: Wisconsin is a critical state this year both because it is always a Presidential swing state, and because there are some important local elections. You can give through my Act Blue site to help win Wisconsin big this year.

[Note: the candidate Justine Kozanoglu who I endorsed before has dropped out and endorsed a candidate who entered the race after I endorsed: Glen Brower. I haven't looked into him yet, but Justine tells me he is an excellent candidate and she supports him wholeheartedly.

And here are some other candidates endorsed by Progressive Majority: (Progressive Majority candidates win about 50% of the time in Wisconsin elections...so these people have a good shot)

    Jessica King
Candidate for Wisconsin State Senate - District 18 (Challenger)
    Oshkosh, East Winnebago County

Progressive Majority in Wisconsin helped Jessica win election to the Oshkosh City Council in 2007, where she ran an aggressive race that unseated an incumbent. During that race she impressed us with her work ethic; she raised over $11,000 for her race and knocked thousands of doors. Jessica is now looking to move up and challenge Carol Roessler, a conservative member of the State Senate. This seat is one of our top targets for 2008 because an additional victory will bolster the one-seat majority in the State Senate. Jessica has attended Planned Parenthood and It's Up to Us training and is a recent graduate of Emerge - an intense, eight month leadership development program for Democratic women. Jessica is a practicing attorney and is active on numerous community boards including the Grand Opera House Foundation, the City Energy and Environment Committee, Transit Committee, and United Way.

Sandy Pasch is running in an open seat vacated by Democrat Sheldon Wasserman, who is running for the State Senate to challenge conservative Alberta Darling. The 22nd is a seat that Democrats must protect. Sandy Pasch entered the race early and has been campaigning aggressively. Sandy has attended Camp Wellstone and secured the endorsement of the Inspector of the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department, the Milwaukee District Attorney, and many prominent progressive activists. Sandy is a registered nurse and 21-year resident of the 22nd district. She is married and has rasied three grown children. As a second job, Sandy teaches ethics, mental health, and community nursing at Columbia School of Nursing. She also serves on numerous community boards and works with the Milwaukee Police Department conducting training on how to effectively deal with people living with mental illness.

    Paul Tubbs
Candidate for Wisconsin State House - District 34 (Challenger)
    Oneida and Vilas Counties

Paul Tubbs is running for State Assembly in Wisconsin's 34th District. This will be Paul's second run for the 34th Assembly District. As latecomer to the 2006 election, despite having a small budget, he out-performed all other Democratic challengers who had run for this seat since 2000. This cycle we recruited Paul to run again. Paul is currently a member of the Rhinelander School Board, has worked as a school counselor for 34 years, is a member of Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC), and is a 30-year resident of his district. Paul owns a small business that has sold recreational equipment since 1988. His wife Cheryl is a teacher and they have three children.

    Kristen Dexter
Candidate for Wisconsin State House - District 68 (Challenger)
    Altoona, Eau Claire, Fall Creek

Kristen is running for the State Assembly in the 68th District, a top target for us in 2008. Kristen has lived in this district for 14 years and was elected to the Altoona School Board in 2002. She serves on the Regional Steering Committee for Health Literacy Wisconsin. She owned a small business working as a metalsmith for several years. She has been married for 15 years to David Dexter, a neurologist at Luther Midelfort/Mayo, and she is a mother of 3 children. Kristen was a star campaign volunteer for Pat Krietlow, a Progressive Majority candidate elected to the State Senate in 2006.

    Dale Klemme
Candidate for Wisconsin State House - District 96 (Challenger)
Prairie du Chien, Gays Mills, Viroqua, Hillsboro

Dale Klemme is running for the 96th Assembly District seat - a top target for us in 2008. We identified and recruited Dale to run in the Spring of 2007. Dale is working to unseat Lee Nerison, a conservative Assembly member who has consistently voted along party lines. Dale is a community development planner who has lived in the district for 30 years, and his wife is the Mayor of Prarie du Chien. He is an active member of the Praire du Chien community, participating in the Praire du Chien Chamber and School Board. He is also a Vietnam veteran.

NEW JERSEY FOCUS: Dennis Shulman, Blogs, Blue Jersey Radio, Impeachment, Groups and Events

NEW JERSEY ACT BLUE SITE: Turning New Jersey BLUER!

    NJ-05 Congressional Race:

This seat is currently held by Scott Garrett, who is widely considered far too much of a right wing extremist for his New Jersey constituents. Garrett is one of the Katrina 11, the 11 Republicans who opposed aid to Katrina victims. Garrett opposed renewal of the Voting Rights Act and he supported oil drilling off New Jersey’s coast, both very unpopular stands in New Jersey. He is anti-union, anti-choice, anti-Katrina victims and about as right wing as you can get.

Dr. Dennis Shulman is the Democratic nominee to take on Garrett. Renowned author, educator, Rabbi, and clinical psychologist, Dr. Dennis Shulman has dedicated his life to serving all segments of the community. Dennis Shulman has been endorsed by the New Jersey State AFL-CIO and has been selected by the DCCC as a strong challenger. You can learn more about Shulman here.

Here's an interesting bit on the tension (or non-tension) between preservation of farmland and the use of farmland for generating alternative energy. For the record, I have talked with farmers from Iowa who suggest that combining wind generation with farming may be a survival strategy for farmers, who make little money off actual farming. See here for something I wrote based on that discussion.

Here's an article on the tension (very real) between demand for water and development in New Jersey. Coming from California I expect such debates. Didn't expect to see them on the wetter East Coast.

I will send you all the materials you need to get started and we can meet online or in person to discuss the ever-changing voter registration laws in Georgia. Next I want to continue to present information on some good candidates in Florida. Here is the latest video from Christine Jennings campaign for Congress (13th District):

Volunteer for Christine Jennings here. I met her back in 2006 and was GREATLY impressed. Both Joy and I compared her with Ann Richards of Texas.

And from Joe Garcia's campaign for Congress (25th District) comes this statement on health care for Veterans:

Miami, FL - While Mario Diaz-Balart has voted twice against benefits for veterans and troops, Joe Garcia understands the limited access to care that veterans have in South Florida, and has proposed a plan to expand veteran care treatment. This includes creating new clinics in Kendall, improved detection and treatment for PTSD and the creation of full-service commissaries in Homestead and Doral.

Joe Garcia issued the following statement:

"Today, I have set forth a plan that honors our nation's veterans by calling for them when they return home. By creating a much needed clinic in Kendall and full-service commissaries in Homestead and Doral, we can better serve South Florida's veterans with the benefits they have earned with their service to our country."

Aqui es un video que Joe Garcia habla sobre la guerra en Iraq (Lo siento, mi Espanol es muy mal!):

Here is another video of Joe Garcia discussing our Troops:

CALIFORNIA FOCUS: Blogs, Progressive Candidates, Alternative Energy, Peace Events and Groups and Events

BLOGGING CALIFORNIA: Here are some blogs covering California Politics

Calitics is an open source news organization for California

The California Progress Report is published by Frank D. Russo, a longtime observer of and participant in California politics.

The Liberal OC covers politics in Orange County.

Conejo Valley Democrat discusses expanding the Democratic majority in the Conejo Valley.

    Some articles of note:

Climate Change and the Conejo Valley

California heading for disaster with airlines, ignoring high speed rail [Note: as someone who lived in Japan for awhile, I am a HUGE fan of good, efficient rail systems. If Japan can do it, why can't we?]

Another Bush poodle [Note: that is what we called Vito Fossella here in NYC...but he drank and fornicated his way into oblivion]

Here is a list of Progressive candidates running in California worth your support (all endorsed by Progressive Majority):

    Marty Block
Candidate for State Assembly - District 78 (Open Seat)
    San Diego County

Marty Block is a candidate for the 78th Assembly District. He is currently elected to the San Diego Community College District Board of Trustees, and previously served on the San Diego Board of Education. The 78th is currently held by a conservative, but she is term-limited out of office. This district has grown more Democratic over the years and is one of the best opportunities for a progressive victory this year. Marty would provide a strong platform for progressive issues in San Diego.

Click here to support and learn more about Marty.

    Mark Ridley-Thomas
Candidate for Los Angeles County Supervisor - District 2 (Challenger)

California Senator Mark Ridley-Thomas is running for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, 2nd District, in the highest priority race for progressives in Los Angeles County. Mark is running against a formidable candidate, former chief of police and current Los Angeles City Councilman Bernard Parks. Although elected by a majority African American district, Parks has a conservative voting record when it comes to investing in communities. If Parks wins, Los Angeles County will be controlled by a conservative majority at a time when county hospitals and emergency services in communities of color are facing closure. Mark has been a staunch supporter of progressive issues such as the establishment of school health centers, consumer protection, community reinvestment, jobs and workforce development.

Click here to support and learn more about Mark.

    Bob Blumenfield
Candidate for State Assembly - District 40 (Open Seat)
    Los Angeles, Northridge, Van Nuys

Bob is running for the California Assembly, 40th District. For the past seven years Bob has been the District Director to Congressman Howard Berman. Bob is Chair of the Valley Anti-Defamation League, Vice Chair of the California Trust for Public Schools and a former board member of the Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters. Bob is a strong proponent of progressive issues in such key areas as education, healthcare, the environment and economic justice. Bob has two formidable primary opponents who are conservative Democrats: Stuart Waldman is the former Chief of Staff to the current Assembly member, and Laurette Healey is a former Deputy State Controller. Bob has received the endorsement of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Congressmembers Howard Berman and Henry Waxman, California State Speaker Fabian Nunez, County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Click here to support and learn more about Bob.

    Richard Barrera
Candidate for San Diego Board of Education - Subdistrict D (Challenger)

Richard Barrera is a candidate for the San Diego School District in Nominating Subdistrict D. Richard is Latino and a union organizer with SEIU Local 399. Richard faces a difficult race in the general election against conservative incumbent Luis Acle, a former Reagan administration official who has openly expressed interest in higher office. A Barrera victory would create both a working progressive majority and a Democratic supermajority.

Click here to support and learn more about Richard.

    Sherri Lightner
Candidate for San Diego City Council - District 1 (Open Seat)

Sherri Lightner is running for the 1st City Council District in San Diego. A community volunteer and leader, Sherri has served as president of both the La Jolla Town Council and the La Jolla Shores Association. An engineer by training, she is a recognized expert on land development law. Because of term limits, the 1st will be an open seat. Sherri represents an opportunity to elect a progressive woman to a historically moderate to conservative seat, allowing for a potential progressive majority.

Click here to support and learn more about Sherri.

    Stephen Whitburn
Candidate for San Diego City Council - District 3 (Open Seat)

Stephen Whitburn is an openly gay candidate running for the open 3rd City Council District in San Diego. This seat is safely Democratic, but Stephen's election could mean the difference between a Democratic majority and a true progressive majority. In particular, he will fight for progressive values on housing issues, especially for renter's rights and against development that is forcing longtime residents (many elderly and people of color) out of what had been affordable housing. As a community activist, he has worked very closely with labor, walking picket lines and working to pass a living wage ordinance. Stephen is also a former union member with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.

Click here to support and learn more about Stephen.

    John Lee Evans
Candidate for San Diego Board of Education - Subdistrict A (Challenger)

John Lee Evans is a clinical psychologist and long-time progressive activist on education and social justice issues. He is running against an incumbent Republican, Mitz Lee. If elected, John will provide a strong progressive voice on the school board for local control and improved opportunity for children in low-income and immigrant communities. A win would create a progressive majority and a Democratic super majority.

What started out at the Summer Study nearly three decades ago as a fringe activity is now mainstream: energy efficiency in buildings. Energy efficiency now represents our best hope to avoid the worst consequences of global warming and energy resource depletion. But to achieve this potential, the energy efficiency "engine" has to be greatly expanded. New programs, technologies, and financing sources need to be developed. A new generation of energy efficiency practitioners, researchers, and policymakers needs to be trained and deployed to solve the problems we face. Do you have ideas about how to make this happen? Come share your ideas and engage in dialogue about these issues at the 2008 Summer Study. Exchange ideas with some of the leading thinkers, visionaries, and luminaries in the field while experiencing the magnificent natural setting that is Asilomar.

The Early Bird Registration Fee for the full conference is $720; the Regular Registration Fee is $820 (both fees include a set of conference proceedings). The one-day fee is $350. All speakers must pay the registration fee.

The conference will be conducted in a casual atmosphere conducive to developing working relationships. Dress is also casual; jeans and shorts are appropriate attire.

    San Ramon Valley Democrats Meetings
We are a group of dedicated Democrats living in the San Ramon Valley who have come together to support and promote the progressive social and political principles that always have been fundamental to the Democratic Party. The San Ramon Valley is comprised of Alamo, Blackhawk, Diablo, Danville, San Ramon, and southern Walnut Creek, and members of our club come from each of those communities. We meet once a month for an educational program at Mudd's Restaurant in San Ramon, alternating between lunch on the second Tuesday, and appetizers (no-host bar) on the evening of the fourth Thursday (6:30 PM). We register people to vote, walk precincts to arouse voters, raise money for candidates, and enjoy the opportunity to socialize with people of common interests. Go here for more info.

Our meetings are lively and our programs are focused on issues of concern to Democrats, locally, statewide, and nationally. Our speakers are chosen for their astute insight into the problems before us as citizens and as voters. We socialize before and after the formal meetings, and enter into animated discussions about the topic of the day. In the process we become fast friends.

WEEKLY PEACE VIGIL IN HUNTINGTON BEACH: Every Sunday, 7 PM

It's hard for most people to imagine a world at peace. We are a very small group of people who believe that this is indeed possible and that peace will happen once enough people believe that it can. So we stand at the pier every Sunday night with a sign that says: "Visualize World Peace. It's up to you". We also believe in non-violence both physically and in our thoughts. We will discuss peace and non-violence with anyone who is rational and smile quietly at those who aren't. We hold this vigil in a spirit of dignity and respect for all as we try to build bridges with those who don't share our philosophy.

Please bring a candle or just help us hold up our banner (no signs please; we have our banner!)
