Progressive Democrat Issue 163

This week I have been focused on my real job, so this week's newsletter not quite as in depth as I sometimes do. This week I am focusing on what I consider some interesting races around the country. I may do that for a few weeks or so because I am learning about so many really good people running who I want to help. This week I focus on Nebraska Senate, Oklahoma Senate, and an Iowa state legislature race.

This week had the last of the Democratic debates, most likely. Seems ABC has abandoned any substance in their coverage, it seems, since their questions in the debate received almost universal condemnation as being "the most embarrassing performance by the media in a major presidential debate this year" according to Editor and Publisher. Just shows how the Ameican media further declines, which is, I guess, why people read blogs like mine.

I spent some time recently analyzing the potential November lineups based on current polls. What struck me most was a.) Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have radically different ways in which they can win, and b.) NEITHER of them has the November election locked up. We have a huge amount of work before us if we want to beat McCain. Based on current polls (which will be very unreliable) Obama is more likely to beat McCain than Clinton. But that could change this far from November. The point that is important to me is that they both are about 30-40 electoral votes behind McCain based on current polls. That isn't much to make up, but it HAS to be made up.

The other thing that strikes me is that we have basically 5-6 very close Senate races this year that Dems can pick up from Repubs and 2 more that may well develop into top tier races. That means Dems have 7-9 Senate pick up chances in 2008. By contrast, Repubs have only two shots at picking up a Dem seat: South Dakota and Louisiana. If you believe in Presidential coattails, Obama has the potential to help Senate races in the following states: Oregon, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Nebraska, Minnesota, Virginia, Alaska and New Hampshire. Pretty much the entire spread of races we have a good shot at. By contrasy, Clinton's coattails could help us in New Mexico and Minnesota. All other Senate races are in states she is doing poorly in according to current polls. Take that all with a grain of salt, but it also cannot be ignored.

Another thing that strikes me in current polling: right now Pennsylvania is solidly Dem, whether we nominate Obama or Clinton, and Ohio is solidly Repub. Clinton's main strength is she polls well in Florida. Barring fraud (which is quite possible in Florida, I believe), Clinton should win Florida. Obama probably won't. She also has a shot in West Virginia. Where Obama picks up more is in places like North Carolina, South Carolina, Nebraska, Oregon, Texas, Michigan, Wisconsin and Colorado. All of those states show McCain ahead against Clinton, but Obama has a strong shot at (he is winning, tied or within a few points of McCain). The path to winning is so different between the two candidates it is really unusual. What we need to do is consolodate the two paths to some degree so that Dems start having a shot along both paths, because neither path alone will win if you believe current polls. So Clinton supporters had better start warming to Obama and Obama supporters warming Clinton if we want to win. We don't want to be, to use Joy's works, once again "divided and conquered" by the Republicans. We do it to ourselves. So we can build rather than lose.

This weekend is Passover and the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising (which spoiled Hitler's birthday that year). Perhaps in honor of this I will mention the excellent work of the National Jewish Democratic Council. They are against the war in Iraq, favor the peace process in Israel/Palestine, and support traditional Jewish American progressive values that grew out of the labor movement and the civil rights movement. And they are countering the right wing propoganda about Clinton and Obama on Israel.

Well, I unwittingly spread a false rumor last week when I quoted Ronald Reagan calling the Little Bush a "n'er do well" and "shiftless." Turns out it came from a piece of satire and is not true. Much as I think Reagan SHOULD have thought those things, it isn't true and in retrospect would be out of character for Reagan (a genuinely nice guy even if a terrible President) to have written it down.

WINNING THE SENATE: Targeting Nebraska! Sexy and Smart

In 2006, Dems won big, even in states like Indiana and Virginia. In 2008, we may yet go even further. We have a very real shot at winning big in Alaska (both a House seat and Senate). We may well win a Virginia Senate seat. And it seems we have a great candidate for Senate in Nebraska. Scott Kleeb is not only a grassroots progressive and a solid American populist, but he's a hunk with a beautiful family:



Scott Kleeb is not only worrying the Republicans with his macho appeal, but he is also a grassroots hero worrying the more machine Dems who are out of touch with the voters. I suspect Kleeb can connect well with voters!

Scott Kleeb, as well as being a macho, hard working hunk, has a Ph.D. in PhD in history, with a special focus on agricultural economics. Scott currently teaches American history at Hastings College in Nebraska, less than two hours from Broken Bow, where the Kleeb family homesteaded in the 1880s.

WINNING THE SENATE: Andrew Rice, Compassion in Oklahoma

I have blogged about how Dems have really great candidates in Alaska and Nebraska in 2008. How about Oklahoma? In Oklahoma we have a real chance to defeat the insane bastard Inhofe. This is a Republican who can't even musted the compassion to support America's Veterans. Here is his record on Veterans' issues:

So who are Dems running against this bastard? Andrew Rice:



I first became aware of Andrew Rice through his efforts trying to fight hunger in Oklahoma. But there is more to Andrew than just compassion. Here is an excerpt from his website:

Born and raised in Oklahoma City, Rice saw his life take a dramatic turn on September 11, 2001, when his older brother, David, was killed in the terrorist attack on New York’s World Trade Center. A graduate of Bishop McGuiness High School in Oklahoma City and a Fulbright Scholar in South Africa, David was working at the investment firm, Sandler O’Neill at the time of his death.

As a result of his family’s tragic loss, Andrew Rice re-dedicated his life to social justice work and common-sense public policy. He has been involved since 2002 with other families who lost loved ones in the 9/11 terrorist attacks to oppose the War in Iraq and attempt to refocus America’s leaders on the terrorist network that attacked us. He was also a strong advocate for creation of the 9/11 Commission to examine events that led to the attack.

After graduating from Colby College in Maine with a Bachelor’s Degree in Religious Studies, Rice worked in Sri Lanka and Thailand on rural development projects in impoverished villages. He returned to the United States one year later to attend Harvard Divinity School, where he graduated in 1999 with a Masters in Theological Studies. While in graduate school, he collaborated with his sister, Amy Rice, to produce the documentary film, “From Ashes”, about an ex-convict who runs a hospice for rejected HIV-positive people in Bangalore, India. At the time of his brother’s death, Rice was working in New York as a documentary film producer.

Shortly after 9/11, Rice worked at the Texas Faith Network (TFN) in Austin, Texas, where he organized Texas religious leaders to advocate for moderate and progressive public policy ideas. He also organized education programs about religious intolerance at places of worship all over Texas. He returned to Oklahoma in 2003 to establish the Progressive Alliance Foundation, which advocates fairness and equity in public policies. In 2005, Rice launched a bid for State Senate District 46, a diverse inner-city district that includes small business owners, ethnic neighborhoods and Oklahoma City University. He defeated two Democratic opponents in the primary and won the general election with 70 percent of the vote after personally walking the entire district and meeting or contacting every voter.

Rice is married to Dr. Apple Newman Rice, an Oklahoma City pathologist and native Oklahoman. They live in the heart of Rice’s OKC Senate district with their two sons, Noah, 3, and Parker, 1.

ELECTING PROGRESSIVES LOCALLY: Elesha Gayman: Progressive Grassroots Winner in the Iowa Legislature

Sometimes a local candidate catches my attention. And, when I can view the situation without bias, I have been a good judge of those candidates who are winners and those who are losers. I don't do as well if I have a personal stake in the election. But if I can view it from a distance, I have so far done a good job of picking winners.

One of the winners I picked in 2006 was Elesha Gayman, who ran for State Rep in Iowa's 84th House district.



There were several reasons she caught my attention. First, the district includes Davenport, IA, where my father was born. So I have a family interest in the district. Second, Elesha was clearly a progressive grassroots favorite, endorsed by the local Democracy for America groups. Third, it was clear to me that Elesha was an intelligent, progressive candidate who would do a great job representing her district.

So I donated to her campaign and I blogged for her. She actually became a reader of my newsletter, at least for a while (now I suspect she is too busy). But most importantly, she won. She is now an incumbent representing the 84th State House district in Iowa. And she is doing a great job focusing on alternative energy, healthcare, minimum wage, agriculture, etc. You can get a rundown of her positions on these issues on her website. And you can read about Elesha's biography here. Recently, the Republican machine has targeted Elesha Gayman. She represents Iowa voters, but she sure doesn't represent the interests of the Greedy Oil Party in Iowa, so they are targeting her and some of her colleagues. So, I include her and the other targeted progressive Democrats on my Iowa Act Blue Page. Help out either by donating or volunteering. Elesha really deserves our support and she really is pissing off right wing extremists.

ALERT: Protest Dick Cheney in NYC!

Vito Fossella (aka "Bush's Lap Dog") always claims to be "indepentent." In fact I had some Fossella supporters actually get angry and nasty at me because I called Fossella a Republican (his actual registration). They were telling people (falsely) that he was an Indepentent. And yet this so-called "independent" keeps bringing none other than Dick Cheney to NYC to fundraise for him. Well, this time a protest is planned to tell the big Dick that NYC does not approve of the failed Bush/Cheney/Fossella policies that have ruined America. But in the cases of West Harlem, Midtown East, and Atlantic Yards, would developers have had carte blanche without community plans? How do community planners believe alternative plans can be more effective? How can alternative plans guarantee that future development will fit consensus-based neighborhood visions? We’ll look at some recent cases—West Harlem, Midtown East, and Prospect Heights/Fort Greene—where developer-driven plans threaten to undermine community vision, and examine the place of community-based planning in these struggles.

VIRGINIA FOCUS: Tom Perriello, Impeachment, Groups and Events

VIRGINIA ACT BLUE SITE: Help turn Virginia even more blue. Since 2005 Virginia has been trending blue, and we can continue that trend. Virginia is important in winning back the Senate, and I believe it might even be a swing state in the Presidential race. There are at least THREE key House races in Virginia this year. The DCCC is targeting VA-11, where the incumbent Repub is one of nearly 30 Republicans to retire, making it an open seat, VA-02, where the Repub incumbent won by LESS THAN 5%, and VA-10. Looking pretty good! And I am starting to read VERY promising things about VA-5. I believe all four of these are winnable and I predict we will win at least two of them...more if we push hard.

Next I want to focus on Tom Perriello who is running for Congress in the VA-5 district. Tom has worked with child soldiers, amputees, and local pro-democracy groups in Sierra Leone played a significant role in the peace and reconciliation process that ended twelve years of violence in that country. He then became Special Advisor and spokesperson for the International Prosecutor during the showdown that forced Liberian dictator Charles Taylor from power without firing a shot. After this success, Tom served as a national security analyst for the Century Foundation. He has worked inside Darfur and twice in Afghanistan. This is the kind of leadership we need in Congress! He is raising record amounts of money to defeat the incumbent Republican.

The 78th is currently held by a conservative, but she is term-limited out of office. This district has grown more Democratic over the years and is one of the best opportunities for a progressive victory this year. Marty would provide a strong platform for progressive issues in San Diego.

Candidate for Los Angeles County Supervisor - District 2 (Challenger)



California Senator Mark Ridley-Thomas is running for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, 2nd District, in the highest priority race for progressives in Los Angeles County. Mark is running against a formidable candidate, former chief of police and current Los Angeles City Councilman Bernard Parks. Although elected by a majority African American district, Parks has a conservative voting record when it comes to investing in communities. If Parks wins, Los Angeles County will be controlled by a conservative majority at a time when county hospitals and emergency services in communities of color are facing closure. Mark has been a staunch supporter of progressive issues such as the establishment of school health centers, consumer protection, community reinvestment, jobs and workforce development.

Greg Pettis
Candidate for State Assembly - District 80 (Open Seat)
Riverside and Imperial Counties



Greg Pettis is a Cathedral City Councilman running for the open 80th Assembly District. Progressive Majority recruited Greg, who is openly gay, to run for this seat. The 80th is one of the two most important legislative targets in California this year, because the conservative incumbent is term-limited out of office. Demographically, the seat has been trending more and more Democratic and is ready for a progressive victory. In addition, all of the openly gay Assembly-members will be termed out in January 2009. If elected, Greg will keep a strong, openly gay voice in the lower chamber.

Richard Barrera is a candidate for the San Diego School District in Nominating Subdistrict D. Richard is Latino and a union organizer with SEIU Local 399. Richard faces a difficult race in the general election against conservative incumbent Luis Acle, a former Reagan administration official who has openly expressed interest in higher office. A Barrera victory would create both a working progressive majority and a Democratic supermajority.

Sherri Lightner is running for the 1st City Council District in San Diego. A community volunteer and leader, Sherri has served as president of both the La Jolla Town Council and the La Jolla Shores Association. An engineer by training, she is a recognized expert on land development law. Because of term limits, the 1st will be an open seat. Sherri represents an opportunity to elect a progressive woman to a historically moderate to conservative seat, allowing for a potential progressive majority.

Stephen Whitburn

Stephen Whitburn is an openly gay candidate running for the open 3rd City Council District in San Diego. This seat is safely Democratic, but Stephen's election could mean the difference between a Democratic majority and a true progressive majority. In particular, he will fight for progressive values on housing issues, especially for renter's rights and against development that is forcing longtime residents (many elderly and people of color) out of what had been affordable housing. As a community activist, he has worked very closely with labor, walking picket lines and working to pass a living wage ordinance. Stephen is also a former union member with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.

The 2008 ACEEE Summer Study is the 14th biennial ACEEE conference on Energy Efficiency in Buildings and will be held August 17–22, 2008. A diverse group of energy efficiency professionals from around the world will gather at this pre-eminent meeting to discuss the technological basis for, and practical implementation of, reducing energy use in buildings. Presentations and discussions will relate to the theme, "Scaling Up: Building Tomorrow's Solutions." What started out at the Summer Study nearly three decades ago as a fringe activity is now mainstream: energy efficiency in buildings. Energy efficiency now represents our best hope to avoid the worst consequences of global warming and energy resource depletion. But to achieve this potential, the energy efficiency "engine" has to be greatly expanded. New programs, technologies, and financing sources need to be developed. A new generation of energy efficiency practitioners, researchers, and policymakers needs to be trained and deployed to solve the problems we face. Do you have ideas about how to make this happen? Come share your ideas and engage in dialogue about these issues at the 2008 Summer Study. Exchange ideas with some of the leading thinkers, visionaries, and luminaries in the field while experiencing the magnificent natural setting that is Asilomar.

Lt. Col. Charlie Brown was a rescue helicopter pilot based in Thailand at the end of the Vietnam War and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. His service record continued up to coordinating surveillance flights over Iraq’s “No Fly Zones.” Since retiring from the Air Force, he has been Vice President of the Roseville Police Association, and has been a tireless advocate for veterans rights, seniors, middle class families, and the environment. Brown nearly won this seat in 2008. Now he's back for a second shot and has a very good chance of winning. San Ramon Valley Democrats Meetings
We are a group of dedicated Democrats living in the San Ramon Valley who have come together to support and promote the progressive social and political principles that always have been fundamental to the Democratic Party. The San Ramon Valley is comprised of Alamo, Blackhawk, Diablo, Danville, San Ramon, and southern Walnut Creek, and members of our club come from each of those communities. We meet once a month for an educational program at Mudd's Restaurant in San Ramon, alternating between lunch on the second Tuesday, and appetizers (no-host bar) on the evening of the fourth Thursday (6:30 PM). We register people to vote, walk precincts to arouse voters, raise money for candidates, and enjoy the opportunity to socialize with people of common interests. Go here for more info.

Our speakers are chosen for their astute insight into the problems before us as citizens and as voters. Internet directions usually suggest taking Almaden Expressway, which is sometimes backed up. A lower stress route is to take Bird Avenue west from 280 and follow it all the way until it dead-ends at Malone. Left on Malone, Right on Almaden Road and 2102 is on the first corner on your left.

Weekly Vigil at Oakland Federal Building Tuesdays at Noon, 1301 Clay Street (2 blocks west of 12th St. BART station). This vigil began in the Spring of 1998, when Madeline Albright tried to gain support for a war against Iraq. The focus has changed over time, and is now calling for an end to the Iraq War and the occupation.

WEEKLY PEACE VIGIL IN HUNTINGTON BEACH: Every Sunday, 7 PM

It's hard for most people to imagine a world at peace. We are a very small group of people who believe that this is indeed possible and that peace will happen once enough people believe that it can. So we stand at the pier every Sunday night with a sign that says: "Visualize World Peace. It's up to you". We also believe in non-violence both physically and in our thoughts. We will discuss peace and non-violence with anyone who is rational and smile quietly at those who aren't. We hold this vigil in a spirit of dignity and respect for all as we try to build bridges with those who don't share our philosophy.

Please bring a candle or just help us hold up our banner (no signs please; we have our banner!)

When you approach driving northbound, there will be a traffic light with Cascade Way on the southbound side of the highway. Be in the right lane, go through the intersection and turn right immediately into a small parking area. Barbara McIlvaine Smith
Candidate for State Representative - District 156 (Incumbent)
West Chester, East and West Goshen and two southern precincts in East Bradford



Barbara McIlvaine Smith is seeking re-election to the 156th Legislative District, Chester County. Barbara is a lifelong resident of Chester County whose family roots date back to 1683. Barbara is an enrolled member of the federally recognized Sac and Fox Nation of Oklahoma. In 2001, she was elected to the West Chester Borough Council and served as the vice president from 2004-2006. Barbara is a member of American Association of University Women; Sierra Club; League of Women Voters; National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; National Organization for Women; and The National Women's Political Caucus. Barbara is the first Democrat in 30 years to hold the 156th legislative seat, and we know she can build on her historic 2006 win.

Tom Quinn
Candidate for State Representative - District 165 (Challenger)
The Borough of Morton, almost all of Springfield and 14 of 21 precincts in Marple, 7 of 15 precincts in Radnor



Tom Quinn is running for the 165th Legislative District, Delaware County. The 165th Legislative District in Delaware County includes the municipalities of Springfield, Morton, and parts of Maple and Radnor. Tom was the Pennsylvania State Education Association Representative for Central Bucks East High School from 1998-2002 and currently teaches at Philadelphia University. Tom currently holds a Democratic Committee seat to which he was elected in 2005, and has been extremely active in the party. A playwright, Tom was commissioned by the Walnut Street Theater to research and write three civil rights-themed plays. Tom is determined to beat a conservative incumbent and help change the General Assembly to a more progressive body.

Tony Payton, Jr.
Candidate for State Representative - District 179 (Incumbent)
Philadelphia neighborhoods of Frankford, Hunting Park; Parts of Olney, Feltonville and Oxford Circle



Tony Payton Jr. is running for reelection in the 179th Legislative District, representing Philadelphia County. The 179th District is one of the poorest in the state, and African Americans and Latinos make up a majority population. Since his election to the General Assembly in 2006, Tony has been at the forefront of education reform in Pennsylvania. He introduced legislation to create the Pennsylvania Youth Commission and authored the REACH scholarship initiative. The REACH Scholarship would provide free tuition and fees to students in the State University System who maintain a 3.0 grade point average and a 90 percent attendance record. In 2007, Tony received the Philadelphia Tribune Leadership Award as one of the city's most influential African-Americans. Tony will once again face opposition from the powerful City Democratic Committee, which has been determined to put a party machine-picked person in the seat since the retirement of a long-time incumbent.

Babette Josephs
Candidate for State Representative - District 182 (Incumbent)
Philadelphia neighborhoods of Center City, Logan Square; Parts of Bellavista and Grays Ferry



Babette Josephs is seeking re-election to the 182nd Legislative District, Philadelphia County. She is a senior Democratic legislator and serves as the Chair of the House State Government Committee, which will oversee re-districting in 2010. Babette is dedicated to civil liberties and is responsible for a number of laws and pieces of legislation, including hate crimes protection for against crimes based on sexual orientation. Babette authored the law that guarantees confidentiality of HIV records. She also helped pass a law providing for automatic recounts in close state election races, and has been at the forefront fighting against those who seek to limit first amendment rights. Her current efforts are aimed at increasing state funding for public libraries and the arts. Babette is working to secure adequate and permanent funding for public transit, improved access to health care for low income working adults, increase the minimum wage and to end discrimination against gay, lesbian and transgendered individuals in health care, housing, and employment. Babette's primary opponent is a conservative former Republican who changed his party affiliation to run against one of the few progressive women in the Assembly. In 2006, Babette defeated him by 237 votes.
