    Progressive Democrat Issue 75: THOUGHTS

Not long ago I wrote about the Bush Administration's renaming the War on Terrorism as the "Long War"...or, as I prefer to dub it, the "Forever War" after Joseph Haldeman's science fiction classic. The fact is that Bush has done practically NOTHING to actually fight al-Qaeda since he abandoned the fight in Tora Bora so he could invade Iraq. Meanwhile, al-Qaeda regroups worldwide, reasserting itself in Pakistan and Afghanistan, spreading to Iraq, and further establishing itself in Somalia. Folks...we are LOSING the war on al Qaeda and Bush is pretty much to blame.

The elected Bush, followed by Bill Clinton, recognized that the chaos in Somalia back around 1992 was a major source of instability. Bill Clinton was well on his way to establishing order in Somalia when a single crashed copter gave the Republicans a chance to show their lack of support for our nation's leader during a war.

Somalia, once ruled by eternally battling warlords, was 90% subdued by Clinton's action. The capital, Mogadishu, was the last bastion of warlord control.

The Republicans in Congress didn't have the guts to stick it out until stability was established. The result? One of the nations where al-Qaeda has the greatest foothold is Somalia. The collapse of the stability Clinton established gave al-Qaeda as fertile a recruiting and training ground in Somalia as they had in Afghanistan. Other centers of activity were the Philippines, Yemen, the Sudan, and the mines of Tanzania where gem mining provided a nice alternative source of income to al-Qaeda's support from Saudi oil interests.

When 9/11 happened and al-Qaeda was identified as the perpetrator, Bush went after them in Afghanistan and came close to capturing their leader, Osama bin Laden. He also, with the co-operation of Yemen, dealt al-Qaeda some serious blows in Southern Arabia. It seemed like Bush recognized the need for a global fight against al-Qaeda, taking the battle to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Arabia and the Horn of Africa, and anywhere else they raise their ugly heads.

Then, suddenly, Bush figured he had put on a good enough show and he pulled out the troops we needed in Afghanistan and sent them to...Iraq. Iraq? A nation that had practically no al-Qaeda presence and whose government was about as anti-al-Qaeda as we are.

Bush dropped the ball. Bush let bin Laden go at Tora Bora, failed to complete the mission in Afghanistan, let alone Pakistan, and he completely ignored Somalia.

Now, in Somalia, al-Qaeda linked Islamicists are seen as the nations only hope against the civil wars of the warlords. The Islamicists are seen as they only chance for stability and we are seen as a destabilizing force.

    From BBC News:

    Fighting rages in Somali capital

Clashes between rival Somali militias have continued for a second day in the capital, Mogadishu, leaving at least 25 people dead and 61 others wounded.

The fighting started when an alliance of warlords attacked the vehicle of a group allied to the Islamic courts, according to eyewitnesses.

A child and a pregnant woman were killed in the crossfire, and residents forced to flee as fighting intensified...

The Islamic courts have restored order to some parts of the city by providing justice under Sharia law.

The alliance of warlords recently created the Alliance for the Restoration of Peace and Counter-Terrorism.

It accuses the Islamic courts of sheltering foreign al-Qaeda leaders, while the courts say the alliance is a pawn of the United States.

Last week, Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf accused the US of funding the coalition of warlords..."

Under Clinton there was a hope of a restoration of stability as local warlords were forced to submit to a central authority...an effort ruined by Republican gutlessness. Remember these were the SAME Republicans who lacked the guts to back Clinton when he wanted to go after Osama bin Laden.

Republicans prevented Clinton from going after bin Laden and al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, in the Sudan and in Somalia. Had the Republicans just shut up and let Clinton lead, al Qaeda would have been our pimary target BEFORE 9/11 even happened.

Now they are doing it again. In Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, the Sudan...and now ALSO in Iraq, al Qaeda is growing in strength and influence. Think about it. They are strong in one nation, Pakistan, that has nuclear weapons, and another, Iraq, where they previously had no influence, that contains a large fraction of the world's oil. So what is Bush doing? Gunning for IRAN! Iran hates al-Qaeda at least as much as we do...at least as much as Saddam Hussein did. If we invade Iran, I guarantee that in NO TIME, al-Qaeda will infiltrate into that nation as well. That would give them one solid block of influence from Pakistan to Iraq, and another one from the Southern end of Arabia, into Somalia and into Africa. Saudi Arabia, the land between those two blocks, is already largely supportive of al-Qaeda, though officially opposed.

It isn't just Somalia. The al Qaeda-allied Taliban are regrouping right under the watch of the Paksistan army and al-Qaeda is being lauded as heros within the borders of our supposed ally.

    Again, from the BBC News:

Taleban fighters battling Pakistani security forces declared a unilateral ceasefire last week to accommodate a religious gathering near Miranshah, the largest town in North Waziristan...

The Taleban seem to be enjoying the ceasefire: the customary tension on their faces replaced with easy smiles...

As the congregation concluded with a collective prayer for a Muslim renaissance, hundreds of devotees could be seen buying posters of Afghan commander Gulbuddin Hekmatyar.

Mr Hekmatyar has recently declared his intent to team up with al-Qaeda to fight the US forces in Afghanistan.

It was difficult to find a place anywhere in Miranshah [Pakistan] where one would not come across some measure of resentment against Pakistan security forces.

[A shopkeeper said,] "[The Taliban] are mujahideen waging a jihad against the Americans. They have no reason to disturb the peace in Waziristan if left to themselves..."

Remember, this is in the nation that is our number one ally in the fight against the Taliban and al-Qaeda in Afghanistan!

We are losing. The Taliban are intact and growing. Osama bin Laden is alive and still in command of a resurgent al-Qaeda that has actually EXPANDED it's reach since we declared war on them. Pakistan is ripe for an uprising by the warlords and religious leaders. Afghanistan would follow immediately after, isolating our forces in a sea of people who hate us. Kashmir is bound to be affected, bringing another nuclear power into play when India has to intervene. If we are already bogged down in Iraq and even Iran, then we will be unable to hold, so Afghanistan and Pakistan (with it's nukes) will fall to the Taliban.

Meanwhile, al-Qaeda linked Islamic extremists are re-establishing their control in Somalia and Sudan has remained sympathetic to al-Qaeda all along. Bush never dealt with the Tanzanian gem trade that helps fund al-Qaeda. Bush has never dealt with the Saudi oil industry's funding of al-Qaeda. So the money still flows from two very lucrative industries while in areas like the Sudan, Somalia, Afghanistan and now Pakistan it is the Islamisists who are viewed as the forces of stability while we and our supporters are seen as the invaders who are destabilizing the area.

We have lost the hearts and minds of a swath of the world extending from the Sudan to the border of India. All it awaits is a charismatic leader to come in and unite the whole area.

A new extremist Caliphate is forming that, if Republicans don't start getting a clue, will reach from the border of India, across the oil fields of the Middle East, and sweep down into the heart of Africa. India and Israel will be threatened. Russia will be threatened. Shi'a Muslims will be exterminated if possible, pushed out if not. Will Osama declare himself Caliph? Or will it be his successor? And Muslims will follow the new Caliph because that Caliph will unite them against the enemy of the faith...America which declares indescriminate war against Muslim nations.

And through it all, America, thanks to Republican gutlessness, greed and stupidity, ALWAYS fight the wrong wars at the wrong time, giving al-Qaeda renewed popularity rather than taking them out the way Clinton wanted to...the way Bush could have.

Why are the Republicans failing so miserably? Is it because they are stupid? Or is it because the Forever War gives them so much room for domination, corruption and profit as our entire nation is subcontracted to Halliburton and similar Cheney-connected companies. Without the Forever War, the Republican Military-Industrial-Religious complex might see their profits fall.  Or they might find themselves in jail as America seeks to prosecute them for their corruption. So maybe they HAVE to continue their Crusade or face jail. But for whatever reason, the Republicans are falling into bin Laden's trap, pitting our Holy American Empire against the New Caliphate.

Every single American killed by al-Qaeda since the first Republican yammered "wag the dog" when Clinton wanted to get bin Laden is as much the fault of Republican incompetance and greed as it is al-Qaeda fanaticism.

Bush has dealt America some serious blows and has been a Godsend to al-Qaeda.

Progressive Democrat Issue 75: TWO DEMOCRATIC STRATEGIES

We talk about how weak the Democrats are, but as long as they lack a majority in either house and as long as the right dominates the media, we don't even really know whether the Democrats are strong or weak. Kerry made many speeches that were powerful and right along the lines of what people around here like to hear...and they were never broadcast by the media or quotes were taken out of context. Without the media, we are BOUND to always look bad because that is how they want to portray us.

But we are building a new strategy thanks to Dean's 50 State strategy--strenthen the local and let the local parties strengthen the national. But Dean is still new and Dean's strategy is constantly under attack by traditional democrats who want to stick to a more targeted, "safer" strategy. And they may be right because of one thing...money. Do we have the money for Dean's strategy?

Thanks to a reader in Tennessee for pointing this out to me. From the Washington Post:

Democrats Are Fractured Over Strategy, Funds

    By Thomas B. Edsall
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Thursday, May 11, 2006

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean and the leader of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee have clashed angrily in recent days in a dispute about how the party should spend its money in advance of this fall's midterm elections.

Rep. Rahm Emanuel (Ill.), who is leading the party's effort to regain majority status in the House, stormed out of Dean's office several days ago leaving a trail of expletives, according to Democrats familiar with the session.

The blowup highlights a long_standing tension that has pitted Democratic congressional leaders, who are focused on their best opportunities for electoral gains this fall, against Dean and many state party chairmen, who believe that the party needs to be rebuilt from the ground up __ even in states that have traditionally been Republican strongholds.

Emanuel's fury, Democratic officials said, was over his concern that Dean's DNC is spending its money too freely and too early in the election cycle __ a "burn rate" that some strategists fear will leave the party unable to help candidates compete on equal terms with Republicans this fall.

This is a fight over how the Democratic Party will face this new century. Dean wants a broad front strategy, yielding no ground to the Republicans. More traditional Democrats want to stick to the same old strategy of picking and choosing our fights. On the one hand, the traditional approach has been failing. On the other hand, while the Republicans always have enough money to be both targeted and carry on a broad attack, the Democrats may not have that money.

We are part of this fight. Ideally we are part of Howard Dean's planning because he is counting on grassroots participation to carry the Democrats to victory. The only way Dean's approach will be accepted by the party as a whole is if he wins. In 2005 we got a hint that Dean's strategy works because we won big in 2005. But 2006 is the real test. Once again, we can shape the party by backing up Dean's 50 state strategy.

Dean has developed the Democracy Bonds as a way of funding the 50 State strategy from small donors like us rather than from special interests. This is a brilliant strategy because it is a sharp contrast to the Republican Culture of Corruption where only big money talks. Our participation in the Democracy Bonds project is critical for the success of Dean's 50 State strategy.

Another way we can back him up is through my recently developed "Sweep out the Republicans" strategy where I am picking states where there is a chance to actually sweep out the Republicans in a big way. These states include races that are likely pick ups as well as long shots. But by focusing on states with close and long-shot races, we are COMBINING the traditional and the Dean strategies. I have so far developed a Sweep NY State Act Blue page, a Blue Iowa Act Blue page and a Blue Nevada Act Blue page. Each of these states was carefully picked because of the very real pick up opportunities as well as the chance to make Republicans really sweat in districts they thought safe. I can also now announce my Blue New Mexico Page as yet a virgin for those who want to be the first to donate.

A final way we can help the 50 State strategy is by helping the latest MoveOn.org advertising effort which is showing GREAT promise. Here is their latest update:

Last week our new "Caught Red-Handed" TV ad on the high cost of prescription drugs went on the air in targeted congressional districts. Here is what one Connecticut newspaper1 wrote about the congressional race in the fifth district of the state where incumbent Republican Rep. Nancy Johnson has been the focus of our ads.

...even though the general election is still six months away, Johnson's likely Democratic challenger, a 32-year-old state senator named Chris Murphy, is suddenly getting national attention.

The player who changed the dynamics of the race is MoveOn, the liberal advocacy group. Last week it released its second television commercial attacking Johnson, and for the second time she responded with her own ads focused more on Murphy than on MoveOn.

MoveOn.org is actively trying to change the very dynamics of races around the nation, putting smug, "safe" Republicans on the defensive. They are targeting many House races with biting ads that so far have shown an amazing effectiveness. Help out MoveOn's Plan for 2006 as a nice complement to Dean's 50 State strategy.

And for those who really believe that the traditional strategy is reasonable (a fair and as yet viable option) I can recommend supporting the targeted approach by donating to defeat the ten weakest Republicans in Congress.

Progressive Democrat Issue 75: TELL THEM TO MIND THEIR OWN BUSINESS

You've all read it. The Bush administration is spying on American phone conversations and practically ALL phone companies are going along with it like sheep. I have heard that Qwest is then only company that has not caved in to the government request for private phone records. And, apparantly, the Bush administration has initiated a series of vindictive criminal and civil probes against Qwest in retaliation.

It is time to contact your phone company and complain that cooperating with illegal spying is, to put it mildly, bad customer service.

    From the ACLU:

Yesterday the nation learned that American telephone companies are helping the government amass what one source called “the largest database ever assembled,” compiling call information on millions of consumers and businesses served by Verizon, AT&T and BellSouth. Take action now!

Scrambling to defend his program, President Bush told reporters “we’re not mining or trolling through the personal lives of millions of innocent Americans,” but that’s simply not true.

This illegal spying is not only directed toward terror suspects or international calls, as the Bush administration has frequently claimed. With the help of these phone companies, the government is tracking the calls and communications of millions of ordinary Americans. And that's just plain wrong.

The government shouldn't track when you call your mother, order pizza, or hold a conference call -- and your phone service provider shouldn’t help them without a warrant or Congress' approval.

Send these companies a message today. Sign our petition...and tell them you expect your phone records to be held in the strictest privacy.

We'll be delivering these petitions directly to AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth.

Maybe we should all look into Qwest...? I admire them for refusing to turn over private records to the government. Or, better yet, go for Working Assets, the phone company that has been blatantly and proudly liberal for years.

Progressive Democrat Issue 75: MAINSTREET MOMS REGISTER TEEN VOTERS

Mainstreet Moms' Operation Blue (originally "Mainstream Moms Oppose Bush) has a new project that is well worth our attention/participation:

Joan Blades, co-founder of MoveOn.org, and author Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner have teamed up to create MomsRising, a vibrant online community to push real family values to the forefront of our national conversation: values such as paid family leave, flexible work options, subsidized health care, and affordable childcare.

MomsRising features personal stories, hot issues, current event discussion topics and timely actions for change.

    That's where Vote@18 comes in:

MomsRising has included Vote@18 in the section on their home page entitled "What's Cooking:Take Action on Hot Issues". That's us at Register a Teen Today. They've given us plenty of real estate to present history and context for our high school voter registration work.

Mainstreet Moms and Vote@18 are proud and honored to be a part of MomsRising's drive to "build a family-friendly America."

Meanwhile, school's not out yet, so if you need help with Vote@18: Moms Sign Up the Senior Class, raise your hand and ask!

Spend some time helping register teens at 18 with Mainstreet Moms. We need to reach out to the youth vote more than ever and Mainstreet Moms makes it easy with an online toolkit to help get you started. I especially urge you to get involved if you have children in High School. Reach out to your child's classmates and get them ready to vote. If we don't get the next generation involved they may find themselves in Iran in no time.

Progressive Democrat Issue 75: BROOKLYN COMMUNITY

Okay...this isn't political, but it is all about the Brooklyn community.

Commerce Bank on 269 Fifth Ave. and 1st St. in Park Slope Brooklyn is unveiling a Mural Project and I want to invite you all to join in. Why am I plugging this? Because my step-daughter's art work will be in pride of place as the central of three panels! I have only seen her initial sketch of it, but it looked way cool.

There are two unveilings: a Press unveiling Friday May 19th at 11 AM and an "official" unveiling Sunday May 21st at 1 PM. I will try to make both events, though I am supposed to be at a symposium at NYU on Friday. But my step-daughter's big momment may be worth skipping part of the symposium!

    Hope to see you there!

Progressive Democrat Issue 75: NYC FOCUS: Endorsement votes

Democracy for NYC's endorsement votes are happening now and New Democratic Majority Endorsements are pending.

DFNYC is holding endorsement votes for three Brooklyn races and one Manhattan race. These endorsements are important because endorsed candidates get local and national attention and get help petitioning to get on the ballot. If you have attended three DFNYC events you can vote in these endorsements. Brooklly races are Congressional 11th District, 20th State Senate district and 57th Assembly District. The Manhattan race is the 30th State Senate district. This is YOUR chance to help progressive candidates win Democratic Primaries.

New Democratic Majority will hold its endorsement votes soon. To vote in NDM endorsements you must be a dues paying member. Dues are $25 per year. I am not sure which races will be up for endorsement votes in NDM this year, but be ready to vote by paying your dues.

I hope I can honestly reassure all of you that DFNYC and NDM will NOT change their eligibility requirements for endorsement votes the way some local Democratic clubs do. DFNYC and NDM can be trusted to be above board.

CRITCAL MASS BICYCLE MOVEMENT! Critical Mass is a bicyclist movement (NOT an organized group!) that holds weekly protests all over the world to protest pollution. Rides are the last Friday of every month starting in Union Sq. Park North, 7PM! At a DFNYC meeting attended by Norm Seigel, Norm used Critical Mass as an example of the kind of activism that NYC needs most and the way Bloomberg is trying to squelch our rights and our voices. Critical Mass deserves our help. According to Bloomberg, my inclusion of this in my newsletter is probably illegal. Well, I refuse to let Bloomberg tell me what I can and cannot write in my Newsletter.

And see their worldwide calendar for Bike Workshops and other locations.

There is more you can do to support Critical Mass. This comes from a reader in Manhattan:

To help keep people involved in Critical Mass, people who might be sacred off because of renewed aggressiveness by the police, I have started a pledge drive that sponsors arrestees. This is a great way for people to stay involved in Critical Mass, stay on top of the issue, and use the NYPD and Bloomberg's tactics to work for us not against us. I am pledging $2 per arrestee, and the money will go to the Legal Aid Society. Pledges are made on the honor system. The more bicyclists the cops arrest the more money for defending civil rights is raised.

    BROOKLYN EVENTS:

New Democratic Majority in Brooklyn: Please join your hosts Marjorie Gersten, David Michaelson and Michael Bouldin on Thursday, May 25, 7 PM at Ozzies, 249 5th Avenue, between Carroll Street and Garfield Street in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

The NJ Democratic State Committee has a wonderful part of their website dedicated to helping you express yourself to the NJ media. What the right wing is doing that we are failing to do is CONSTANTLY express their opinions to the media.

Go to the NJDSC website and SHOUT to the media. This is one of the most important things we need to be doing...CONSTANTLY shouting to the media.

Here is their Topic of the Week:

Under Democratic Leadership New Jersey's Economy is Growing

New Jersey Democrats fought Republican detractors and successfully increased the minimum wage to a living wage. Read the story here.

Even though we've seen great success recently, it's no excuse to rest on our laurels. There is always more that we can do to grow New Jersey's economy and improve the quality of life in our state.

Senator Corzine has introduced a bold economic plan for our state. He believes that growing New Jersey’s economy and creating good-paying jobs cannot and will not happen unless we achieve four important things first:

    1) Enact comprehensive ethics reforms.

    2) Get New Jersey’s fiscal house in order.

    3) Bring 21st century management practices to State government.

    4) End hand-to-mouth, year-to-year decision-making and replace it with long-term thinking and planning.

One of the most excited aspects of the Senator's economic blueprint is the Edison Innovation fund. The plan would encourage growth in new and emerging fields by promoting partnerships between the state’s research universities, government and private enterprise. These partnerships and investments would spur job creation in new fields such as nanotechnology, renewable energy, homeland security and biotechnology.

Senator Corzine's blueprint is one that will lead to further economic success for New Jersey.

Progressive Democrat Issue 75: VIRGINIA FOCUS

    From the Virginia Organizing Project:

    Virginians Need A Raise!!

It’s time that the poorest working Virginians got a raise. Virginia’s hourly minimum wage of $5.15 has not been changed since 1997. Because inflation has eroded the wage’s value, minimum wage workers earn just a third of what the average American worker makes today, the largest such gap since 1949. Since 1997, the minimum wage has decreased in value by 17 percent. A single Virginia worker earning the minimum wage makes only $9,893 annually, or $824 a month, after deductions for Social Security and Medicaid. That’s hardly more than the official federal poverty level of $9,570 for a single person in Virginia.

Minimum wage earners work as hard as anybody else. Yet they find themselves hopelessly behind in meeting the escalating costs of daily living, even with food stamps, rental assistance, and other forms of aid. Rents have soared, and thousands of people are waiting in line for years to gain an affordable place to live.

According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the median “Fair Market Rents” reveal housing markets that leave many behind. For one-bedroom units and three bedroom units in several regions of the state show, median monthly rents are:

    * $915 and $1,537, in the Washington, D.C., area
    * $668 and $1,086, in the Richmond-Petersburg area
    * $653 and $921 in the Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Newport News areas
    * $463 a month and $921 a month Roanoke area, and
    * $493 a month to $1,042 in the Montgomery County area

To pay a middle-range rent for a typical two-bedroom unit in the Hampton Roads area, for example, would require a household earning $5.15 an hour to work 118 hours a week. Similar median rent figures pertain to other areas as well.

That the minimum wage cannot keep pace with the rising cost of living is evident in food stamp rolls. Nearly 486,000 Virginians received food stamp benefits last year, a 41 percent increase since 2001. Or to look at it another way, if the federal minimum wage had gone up at the same rate as that provided a CEO from 1990 to 2000, it would have reached $25.50 an hour. In 1980, the average CEO at a major company made the same amount of money per year as 97 full-time minimum wage workers; by 2000, it took 1,223 minimum wage workers to match what a CEO made.

Some will argue that raising the minimum wage will force businesses to lay off employees in order to hold down business costs. In fact, the opposite is true. No reputable study of the effects of minimum wage increases and employee retention has revealed layoffs. Princeton economists David Card and Alan Krueger studied minimum wage employees in New Jersey, and found little or no impact on employment. Economist Robert Solow, an MIT Nobel Laureate, stated in an article that the “main thing about the research is that the evidence of the job loss is weak. And the fact that the evidence is weak suggests the impact on jobs is small.”

According to studies such as those that the Economic Policy Institute has undertaken, tangible benefits accrue not just to workers but also to businesses, the economy and society in general, if Virginians of modest means receive a raise in the minimum wage. An increase would certainly ease financial burdens on Virginia’s lowest income households, creating greater family stability. Employees would stay on the job and absenteeism would decline as workers would have greater satisfaction in their jobs. The cost of retraining new people would diminish. Greater productivity on the job would take place. Money earned from a higher wage would go back into the economy to purchase goods and services. Particularly important, providing a floor under hourly minimum wage levels would also reduce reliance to some extent on government services. And, of course, businesses can claim state and federal tax deductions for the cost of doing business.

While Virginia continues without a minimum wage increase, other states, both red and blue, have moved forward. In fact, seventeen, including the District of Columbia, have raised their minimum wage since 1997, when Virginia last approved an increase. Florida and Nevada voters overwhelmingly approved minimum wage referenda with heavy margins, respectively, 71 percent and 68 percent. Washington and Oregon have required annual adjustments to their states’ minimum wage in light of inflation. Nine Republican governors lead states that have raised the minimum wage. A Pew Research Center Poll conducted in December 2004 found that 86 percent of those surveyed supported raising the federal minimum to $6.45 an hour.

The federal government has repeatedly rejected a raise in the federal minimum wage. Now it’s time for Virginia to what it is necessary and right for the lowest paid workers in the state. Raising the minimum wage is the minimum we should do.

Progressive Democrat Issue 75: NATIONAL ACTION: Global Warming!

This is from the Union of Concerned Scientists:

On Wednesday May 17, the House of Representatives will vote on the Department of Interior Appropriations Bill. Last week, the Appropriations Committee added an important resolution calling for mandatory global warming emission reductions. This week, an amendment will be offered to the bill to protect your right to know about toxic chemicals in your community. Please tell your representative to support these efforts to curb global warming and ensure your neighborhood is safe and healthy.

Let me add my own note to this. Global warming is becoming a stark, harsh reality for the world. My wife studies climatology. The scientists in her field are, quite literally, becoming very scared of what the future holds and many are beginning to wonder if we are running out of time to act.

If we don't want to condemn our children to a future standard of living that is FAR below what we have enjoyed, we must act now. Please visit the Union of Concerned Scientists website to pressure your Representative to DO SOMETHING to preserve our children's future.

And please go here to find 10 ways you can personally help reduce global warming emissions.

Progressive Democrat Issue 75: GETTING LOCAL AROUND THE NATION

This is how our coalition will be built: through out local action. Our success depends on you and your activism. There are many ways you can get active. Below I try to provide a good variety of options and urge you all to find a couple that suit you. These groups below are the way we can get our country back. If we don’t get involved we won’t win in 2006 and beyond. Joy and I are currently involved in a few groups plus our own organizing efforts bringing different groups together and we are finding it a good boost to our social life. We are meeting cool people and it makes us get out a couple of times a month more than we would otherwise.

    Finding your local groups:

Democracy for America: Founded by Howard Dean, now run by his brother Jim Dean, this group is very effective at the local grass roots. Many think this is the future of the Democratic Party. I think this is partly true, though the neighborhood Dem party clubs will continue to be vital to our efforts as well. This is a group that you really should be active in either by joining a local meetup or starting one of your own.

Drinking Liberally: An informal, inclusive weekly Democratic drinking club. Raise your spirits while you raise your glass, and share ideas while you share a pitcher. Drinking Liberally gives like-minded, left-leaning individuals a place to talk politics. You don't need to be a policy expert and this isn't a book club - just come and learn from peers, trade jokes, vent frustration and hang out in an environment where it's not taboo to talk politics. Find your local drinking liberally group or start your own with a few buddies.

The Democratic Party: Now that Howard Dean is in the driver’s seat I am hoping the Democrats will become more effective on the local level. One of the main complaints against the DNC in the past couple of elections is that they didn’t help the local parties in most parts of the nation. If you go to the DNC website and find the “Get Local” pull down menu on the left, you can find your local Dem groups. I strongly urge you to get involved with your local Dem club since it is often these groups that actually do much of the footwork to win each district.

Critical Mass: Critical Mass is a bicyclist movement (NOT an organized group!) that holds weekly protests all over the world to protest pollution. Go here to find the closest Critical Mass action in your area (site covers ALL of North America).

Wellstone Action: Paul Wellstone started something in Minnesota and his death hasn’t stopped it. Wellstone’s family is continuing his work and expanding it throughout the nation. Wellstone Action trains activists and grassroots candidates and they did very well in the last election. I urge you to look into any nearby Wellstone Action events.

Common Cause: Common Cause is a major force in Progressive Politics. It was founded in 1970 (by a Republican, mind you!) to counter the influence of special interests in Washington. Today they work on many of the same issues I am trying to highlight. Look for your state’s Common Cause organization.

To find the League of Conservation Voters branch in your state, CLICK HERE. This is the group you should be involved with if the environment is your thing.

To find the NARAL branch in your state, CLICK HERE. This is the group you should be involved with if choice is your thing.

Finally I suggest Americans for Democratic Action. ADA is a progressive branch of the Democratic Party. Email: adaction@ix.netcom.com for info on local groups.
