Progressive Democrat Newsletter 306
This was quite a week! The end of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi is dead after a NATO air strike on his caravan alerted the new Libyan government to his presence. Bush lied to unilaterally invade Iraq, leading to a quagmire occupation that is only now ending. His goal was to bring down Saddam Hussein, yet we remained on the ground until now. It was illegal, unpopular and hugely expensive in terms of both money and lives. By almost any measure it was a failure. Obama, as part of an international coalition, gave air and naval support to a popular uprising against Gaddafi and succeeded in a fraction of the time with a fraction of the cost without putting a single American soldier on the ground. The difference is amazing and says a great deal about the difference between Republican and Democratic foreign policy. Though American news media is largely ignoring this huge difference, BBC News is taking note of it.
Meanwhile, finally, our troops in Iraq are coming home. President Obama is honoring our treaties and finally ending our presence in the Iraq quagmire. In some ways it seems like he should have done this before, but remember he'd already pulled out most of our troops and had left a residual force to ensure as smooth a transition as possible. Whether that transition will be smooth remains to be seen...most are skeptical. But everyone but the Republicans agree that the time has come to leave and to let the Iraqis try and stand on their own.
Meanwhile President Obama also has proposed an excellent jobs bill that begins by focusing on rehiring laid off teachers and first responders. Who could object to that? Oh yeah, the pro-Billionaire, anti-working class, anti-middle class Republicans. They blocked the rehiring of teachers and first responders. They blocked a major job creation bill. Yet they still want to cut taxes on billionaires. Disgusting!
President Obama's Weekly Address is a particularly good one this week:
Meanwhile, as the NYPD, on Bloomberg's orders, continue to beat up and arrest unarmed American citizens exercising their civil liberties, one Marine sergeant tells them off:
