For anyone who wants to be alerted by email whenever this newsletter is updated (usually weekly), please send your email address and let me know what state you live in (so I can keep track of my readership).

From the Davenport Association of Professional Firefighters:

IAFF Partners With City Brew Coffee

The IAFF has partnered with City Brew Coffee Company to market and sell Firehouse Blend Coffee to support the IAFF Burn Foundation. Roasted by City Brew Coffee Company in Billings, Montana, Firehouse Blend Coffee is available through the IAFF online store, the City Brew Coffee web site and in all City Brew stores and kiosks across the country. Proceeds from the sales of Firehouse Blend Coffee benefit the IAFF Burn Foundation.

In addition, the IAFF and City Brew have developed a unique fundraising initiative to help IAFF affiliates conduct fundraising programs through sales of Firehouse Blend Coffee products. City Brew will provide Firehouse Blend Coffee to IAFF affiliates at wholesale prices for resale at local fundraising events. IAFF affiliates keep all proceeds resulting from any fundraising programs to distribute to charitable causes in their own communities.

“This partnership provides a great opportunity to support our Burn Foundation and for our affiliates to raise funds to benefit worthy causes in their own cities and towns,” says IAFF General President Harold Schaitberger.

Cherie Swanson from City Brew, who has been part of the development of the program from the beginning, says, “We are developing a great partnership with the IAFF and its affiliates. We have been working internally for more than three years to bring this multifaceted program to the IAFF and its members. We are extremely excited about the future of our fundraising partnership and look forward to raising awareness and dollars for the IAFF Burn Foundation and IAFF affiliates.”

Billings, MT Local 521 members served as testers to develop the coffee blend and worked with Kinetic Marketing to design the Firehouse Blend Coffee logo. Billings fire fighters have already conducted their own Firehouse Blend Coffee fundraisers to benefit local charities, as well as the IAFF Burn Foundation.

Billings Local 521 President Dan Cotrell is excited about the program. “Our partnership with City Brew Coffee has been a great public relations tool and financial asset for Local 521,” he says. “Sales of Firehouse Blend Coffee have raised revenues for our charitable fund and increased public awareness of the IAFF Burn Foundation and our local’s involvement in causes that help our community.”

He adds, “And we get the added bonus of enjoying the best cup of coffee around.”

    Solidarity

Numerous issues affect working families in the Quad Cities, across the country and around the world that need our attention and need to be addressed. From our current struggle for Good Jobs, Safe Jobs to our past struggles to increase the minimum wage, and ongoing struggles for quality affordable health care, union members fight for what’s right for the entire community, not just ourselves.
Supporting each other is what Solidarity is all about.

The Quad City Federation of Labor is there to help plan actions, rallies, spread the word and build support for issues affecting working families – among our union brothers and sisters and our larger communities.

We build Solidarity by working together with other unions, community organizations, student groups, faith-based organizations and many others on issues of common concern. If you have an issue that you think needs to be addressed, contact the Quad City Federation of Labor.

Alternative energy and YOUR energy bill: YOU can be part of the solution for America by signing up to purchase your energy through a Green Power Provider. My wife and I have been doing this in NYC for years. All our energy usage is provided through wind energy generation on American farms. So we use clean energy AND help American farmers. It costs us three cents per kilowatt-hour more per month, but we feel great about it. Although our actual energy may come from anywhere, we are paying to purchase wind energy for the energy grid. Each state has different programs available, usually through yuor existing energy provider right on your existing energy bill. To find such options in Iowa, go here and pick your energy provider from the list. If you need help, you can email me and tell me who you get your bill from (don't give me any other info!) and I can tell you who to contact to go green through that energy provider. Or you can do the same thing using Renewable Energy Certificates through an organization that works with utility companies, though in this case it is a separate bill. One off the cheapest (.4-1 cent per kilowatt-hour), but still e-Green certified, ways to do this is through Good Energy. Or, for about half a cent per kilowatt-hour you can purchase renewable energy certificates through Carbonfund.org. ANY of these ways you do it, you are helping the environment, helping America's economy, and helping cut carbon emissions.
