The Progressive Democrat Newsletter grew out of the frustration of the 2004 election. Originally intended for New York City progressives, its readership is now national. Nevada Focus: Green Power Switch

Now more than ever America needs Green Power. Green Power means domestic energy and that means domestic jobs. Green Power means less money going to Iran, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela and more staying right here in America. Green Power means cleaner air, cleaner water, less carbon emission and a stronger economy. And it is something we ALL can be a part of.

Here are a couple of programs to help Nevada residents make the switch to green energy. The cost is generally less than 3 cents per kilowatt-hour more than you currently pay for energy. By participating you contribute to reducing carbon emissions, cleaning up Nevada's environment, and stimulating Nevada's economy. Three important ways of helping your local community, local environment and local economy, all for less than 2 cents per kilowatt-hour of energy you use. When my wife and I made a similar switch in New York, we barely noticed the difference in our energy bill. We also switched to compact fluorescent bulbs at the same time and the energy savings reduced our bill by one-third even with the small increase from buying green energy. Together, we reduced our carbon footprint by about 30% while overall saving money. I highly recommend the switch.

    NEVADA ENERGY's GREEN POWER INITIATIVE:

GreenPower is clean energy generated from renewable resources such as solar, wind, geothermal and biomass sources.
    What is conscious living?

Conscious living practices involve teaching our children how to incorporate environmental stewardship and sustainability of our earth's natural resources into their daily lives.

The GreenPower program's mission is to support and promote educating Nevada's K-12 students in renewable energy and incorporating conscious living practices into their daily lives.

The GreenPower program works with Nevada's K-12 educators to implement energy conservation concepts and practices into the classroom and also provides ideas, books and hands-on teaching tools to help students learn about and use green power.

The GreenPower program has also installed permanent solar panels and wind turbines at select school sites to help students learn first-hand how renewable energy is generated. GreenPower provides teachers with renewable energy knowledge and resources, including an annual teacher training and assistance with special projects. All of these services are 100% free to the school.

Since its inception in 2000, GreenPower has been a partnership between DRI (Desert Research
Institute), volunteer committee members, NV Energy and their customers.
How can I Help Nevada's kids Grow up Green?

When you volunteer to add a few dollars to your monthly electric bill, you are giving the knowledge of renewable energy and conscious living to Nevada's future power customers. When they grow up to be consumers, they will be able to make cleaner, greener decisions for their own homes and businesses.

GreenPower is funded by the generosity of people like you. For just a few dollars a month, you can help students learn about GreenPower topics. All contributions are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law and your individual tax situation.

You can cancel your GreenPower donation at any time by calling customer service at (Minimum six month commitment required. After six months, you can participate on a month-to-month basis and cancel at any time)
