Mole's Progressive Democrat

The Progressive Democrat Newsletter grew out of the frustration of the 2004 election. Originally intended for New York City progressives, its readership is now national. For anyone who wants to be alerted by email whenever this newsletter is updated (usually weekly), please send your email address and let me know what state you live in (so I can keep track of my readership).

    Progressive Democrat Issue 233

Okay, people are having fun with this one. From ABC news via Americablog:

The lowered testosterone levels the study found in Republican men after the election matches what other researchers have found when men are involved in face-to-face competition. Scientists have shown that more often than not in showdowns such as sports competitions or physical fights the loser ends up with a drop in testosterone....

Republican men nationwide may have experienced a drop in testosterone levels the night Barack Obama was elected president, according to the results of a small study that found another link between testosterone and men's moods.

By taking multiple saliva samples from 183 young men and women on election night, researchers found that the testosterone levels of men who voted for John McCain or Robert Barr dropped sharply 40 minutes after Obama was announced the winner

Here's another reason we worked so hard to elect Al Franken to the Senate:

And let me leave you with a good idea for the holidays. If you are looking for the kind of gift that encourages true values and not materialism (and I am not completely against materialism!), you might want to check out Alternative Gift and GoodGiftShop.org (UK site, but takes US orders...just remember to convert currencies). They have some really cook stuff that make good gifts for the less materialistic minded people on your list. Other people have been making it a tradition to give Kiva gift certificates for gifts.

Keep up the Pressure for Healthcare Reform

This is one of the big moments. The House is just a tad short of the votes necessary to pass a healthcare bill with a strong public option (the so-called "Medicare Plus 5 formula"). Here is a list of House members who are leaning yes, undecided, or leaning no. These leaners are the ones WE have to lean on to get them to vote yes. I plan on contacting those Congressional reps who I heavily blogged for and donated to when they first ran. If any of these people are ones who represent you or who you helped get elected, pressure them now. Repeatedly!

    Lean Yes:

    Secretary of State Project

Practically every year I take some time to focus on a very important and very successful organization: the Secretary of State Project. In 2006 and 2008 they won some very key races which helped ensure fair elections. Here is their description of what they do:

The Secretary of State Project was created by concerned citizens to provide an easy-to-use, low-cost vehicle for online donations to reform-minded Secretary of State candidates and incumbents in key battleground states. Since 2006, we have won races in 9 out of 11 states including Ohio, Minnesota, Iowa, Montana, Missouri, West Virginia, Nevada, New Mexico, and Oregon.

In 2010 we will focus on re-electing reform candidates, as well as targeting open seats in key battleground states.

In 2006 the Secretary of State Project won 5 races, ALL of them critical ones for winning in 2008:

OHIO (open seat: replaced Ken Blackwell)
    Jennifer Brunner 1,994,276 (54.78%)
    Greg Hartmann 1,482,064 (40.71%)

    MINNESOTA (defeated Republican incumbent)
    Mark Ritchie 1,049,434 ( 49.09%)
    Mary Kiffmeyer 944,004 (44.16%)

    NEW MEXICO (open seat)
    Mary Herrera 291563 (54.0%)
    Vickie Perea 248020 (46.0%)

    NEVADA (open seat)
    Ross Miller 279,499 (48.73%)
    Danny Tarkanian 232,691 (40.57%)

    IOWA (open seat)
    Michael Mauro 538,108 ( 53.6%)
    Mary Ann Hanusa 465,871 (46.4%)

In 2008, the Secretary of State project won 4 out of 4 races:

    MONTANA (defeated Republican incumbent)
    Linda McCulloch (D) 233,717 | 49.3%
    Brad Johnson (R) 228,717 | 48.3%

    MISSOURI (reelected Democratic incumbent)
    Robin Carnahan (D) 1,743,819 | 62%
    Mitch Hubbard (R) 1,003,692 | 36%

    WEST VIRGINIA (open seat)
    Natalie Tennant (D) 431,887 | 65%
    Charles Minimah (R) 227,784 | 35%

    OREGON (open seat)
    Kate Brown (D) 873,968 | 51%
    Rick Dancer (R) 785,740 | 46%

Here are their 2010 candidates (so far):

    2010 Races

Building on our successful model in 2006 and 2008, The SoS Project is strategically focusing on a handful of key state races. Our goal – to ensure fair, clean elections in 2012 and beyond.

Defending the seats of progressive Secretaries of State:

Mark Ritchie, Secretary of State in Minnesota

Mark Ritchie is a true progressive champion. In 2006, the long-time community organizer defeated Republican incumbent Mary Kiffmeyer to take the reins of the election process in Minnesota. Since taking office, Secretary Ritchie has campaigned tirelessly for instituting universal or automatic registration in his state. He has also been instrumental in the fight to expand Election Day Registration in other states, including a successful campaign in Iowa. Secretary Ritchie is perhaps best known for running a scrupulously fair and transparent election recount in the Franken/Coleman 2008 Senate race. Senator Al Franken was certified as the winner of that race by a mere 312 votes.

Debra Bowen, Secretary of State in California

Debra Bowen is one of the most progressive Secretaries of State in the nation. Shortly taking office she ordered a “top to bottom” review of the California’s electronic voting machines which resulted in the decertification of Diebold and two other voting system manufacturers. As a result of her progressive accomplishments as Secretary of State, she was awarded a Profile in Courage Award by the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in 2008.

    Open Seats:

Jocelyn Benson, candidate for Secretary of State in Michigan

Election law scholar and community organizer Jocelyn Benson is running for an open seat to replace republican Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land who is term-limited out of office. In 2004, she ran a voter protection campaign in 21 states, deploying 17,000 trained election law lawyers. In Michigan in 2008, Benson helped lead the fight to stop republican Secretary of State Land from disenfranchising voters who were victims of home foreclosures.

    Criteria for Endorsement

The Secretary of State Project evaluates candidates based on their positions on election issues. Specifically, affirm that you support the following principles:

    1) No election official should play a partisan role in an election he or she will play a role in administering. All election officials must conduct their responsibilities openly and objectively to restore public confidence.

    2) Our elections must be verifiable and secure. Every vote cast must be counted by a system that is auditable with a verifiable paper trail and all voting materials, including ballots and voting machines must be secured at all times.

    3) Universal, automatic, and portable voter registration should be the goal of every state. Our election officials should endorse state and federal legislation legislation in support of this ultimate goal.

    4) Election officials should not place onerous requirements on or attempt to intimidate non-partisan voter registration groups.

    5) Voter suppression and election fraud defined as the intent to cast a ballot illegally will not be tolerated. Efforts to suppress the vote through onerous requirements, such as unconstitutional photo ID laws, must be opposed.

    6) There should be equal access to the ballot box for all citizens. Every citizen must have equal access to locations, adequate machines and well-trained election judges. Efforts to raise voter participation of citizens who often face special barriers, such as students, military personnel, low-income people and minorities — including Election Day Registration — should be endorsed and actively supported.

To request an Endorsement Questionnaire, please email us at endorsements@secstateproject.org.

I would also like to add that one of their previous wins, Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, has chosen to run for US Senate this year. Given what a stellar Secretary of State she was (notice how 2008 in Ohio was VERY different than 2004...thank Jennifer Brunner for that!) I have been supporting her run for Senate. I urge you to do the same.

    Carbon Neutral Products

I am starting to compile a list of carbon neutral products, excellent alternatives to conventional products. It is a good way to start decreasing your carbon footprint.

I start with Carbon Neutral Coffee. Most people don't realize what a large part of the world economy coffee is. Next to oil, it is the most traded commodity on earth. The growth, processing and transportation of coffee all contribute to global warming. The impact of your coffee habit can be cut down. Shade grown coffee, for example, preserves forests, thus reducing the carbon impact of the coffee. But some companies offer carbon neutral coffee, where between reduction of carbon impact and carbon offsets, your cup of coffee is as carbon neutral as possible.

My favorite comes from Deans Beans. This particular Peruvian coffee is fair trade and carbon neutral:

The world's first carbon neutral coffee! A sweet velvet roasted Peruvian from Pangoa Coop. We have calculated the entire carbon load from planting to drinking, and neutralize it with hardwood plantings by the farmers themselves at Pangoa. Fight Global Warming one cup at a time!

We are constantly working on ways to limit our impact on the resources of dear ol' Mother Earth. With NoCO2 coffee, we have launched a new coffee and concept to fight Global Warming one cup at a time, and to show our customers that we both contribute to the problem by simple acts every day and that we can also address the issue with simple acts.

We calculated the total carbon load generated by a pound of coffee, from growing, harvesting and processing, to shipping, roasting, shipping to you and brewing your coffee at home. This took a long time and required help from Trees for the Future, UPS, World Resources Institute and Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center (thanks to all!). Seventeen pounds of coffee generates about fifty pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere. We also found that one hardwood in the Tropics of Coffee sequesters about fifty pounds of CO2 annually. So we have devised a program to plant one tree in Pangoa Cooperative for every 17 pounds of NoCO2 Peruvian coffee consumed by you, our loyal customers. This is not a joke or a clever, meaningless marketing ploy. It's a real attempt to take our responsibility seriously, and help consumers take theirs seriously as well.

We have begun the project with the Ashaninkas indigenous farmers of Pangoa, whose land was denuded by illegal logging in the 1980's. They have chosen the species, Tornillo, which grows about fifty feet tall over time and provides shade, critical migratory bird habitat, and when properly managed provides "social security for our grandchildren" in the form of a harvestable forest product, according to Esperanza Castillo, the manager of Pangoa.

To date, over eighty thousand (yeowww!) trees have been planted, way more than needed to compensate for the carbon load of our relationship with the coop. So drink up... Give NoCO2 a try and see if this hot coffee can help cool the planet.

I should note that Deans Beans have other great coffees, some with their own interesting story. For example, one monthly special is Captain Phillips Pirate Brew:

This bold, wild Ethiopian was liberated from the clutches of Somali pirates by Navy SEALS.

Haven't tried it, but that's a cup of coffee with a story.

More expensive than Deans Beans, but perhaps a bit more gourmet, is Grounds for Change. Shade grown, fair trade and carbon neutral.

Next there are Carbon Neutral Batteries: (found this at CarbonFund.org, which is also where Grounds for Change offset their carbon)

Venom Batteries a Carbon Neutral Alternative to Disposables

Venom Power’s Eco Alkalines™ brand batteries for consumer electronics are now certified carbon neutral by Carbonfund.org. This means we all now have a carbon neutral alternative to conventional disposable batteries. As with other dry-cell batteries you may have, these batteries are recyclable. They now carry our product certification label, the first carbon neutral label in the US!

Venom Batteries are designed to perform dependably, while having 0% mercury, cadmium or lead. The batteries are carbon neutral after a rigorous product life-cycle assessment, and offsetting the carbon footprint of the batteries. Venom is supporting Carbonfund.org and Paso Pacifico’s Return to Forest project in Nicaragua. Validated to the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standards with Gold Distinction, the reforestation project is reconnecting critical biological corridors on the Pacific coast, as well as sequestering about 170,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide from our atmosphere.

Eco Alkalines™ will begin shipping to retailers in North America in the fourth quarter of this year, and we’ll update you on where you’ll be able to buy them. You can also visit Venom Power on the web, and learn more about our project, Return to Forest.

Next I found (at my local food co-op) some excellent olive oil that is carbon neutral and also contributes to long-term stability in the Middle East. This comes from Alter Eco:

As today's news headlines are filled with stories of conflict in the Middle East, Alter Eco Fair Trade defies these events by unveiling the first USDA Certified Organic, Fair Trade Certified™, Carbon Zero Certified Extra Virgin Olive Oils from Palestine. These GMO free, Gluten free, dairy free, and vegan oils originate from Rumi and Nabali olives, both native to Palestine.

Planted, picked, and processed by fair trade cooperatives in Palestine, Jenin, West Bank, Alter Eco selects the highest quality olives with perfectly balanced flavor, aroma, and acidity while maintaining their fair trade commitment to help empower marginalized rural communities.

Each bottle directly supports a better life for farming families by having an over 30% increase in farmer revenue over conventional prices. This translates into financing scholarship funds, micro loans for women's empowerment programs, and olive tree planting.

From Carbon Neutral Actions I find there is Carbon Neutral Beer: New Belgium Brewing Company from Colorado. They are wind powered and they also offset their carbon (though they do so through the controversial Chicago Carbon Exchange). From an article on them on Lime.com:

Colorado’s New Belgium Brewing Company, based in Fort Collins, makes some of the country’s best microbrews – including Fat Tire, Blue Paddle, and Sunshine Wheat. But as important as the quality of the beer is the philosophy of the company, which is dedicated to energy efficiency and social responsibility. Founded by a social worker and an electrical engineer in 1991 – in a basement, with a home equity loan – New Belgium has been finding ways to reduce its CO2 emissions for nearly a decade. The brewery is powered by wind energy and uses sustainable technologies and Earth-friendly throughout its business. New Belgium’s media director Bryan Simpson told LIME about the company’s policies, and why he likes going to work every day.

Check out their beers here. And to find where their beers are available, check out this interactive map.

I will end with one warning. There are companies that claim they sell "carbon neutral paper." I have encountered advocates from the paper industry who make claims that between reforestation and energy production from paper waste they produce a more environmental alternative than recycled paper. This is bunk. Although the paper industry DOES replant trees, this is monoculture reforestation that has been found by scientific research (published in peer-reviewed journals) is actually environmentally harmful and is NOT the kind of reforestation I advocate. So far I have found no viable claim of carbon neutral paper and buying recycled paper is still one of the best options. You can find out more about what is and isn't environmentally sound paper, check out Conserveatree.org. And they have links to paper products worth checking out.

The Cooperative Grocery—The CoG—is a non-profit, working members cooperative that offers high-quality groceries at an affordable price to individuals and families in our community.

Members of The CoG work 2 1/2 hours every 4 weeks, performing jobs like stocking shelves, building orders and providing member services. By providing much of the labor for the store, our members keep our operating costs to a minimum. We then pass the savings onto our members in the form of lower prices. Our model is based on the successful Park Slope Food Co-Op in Brooklyn, NY, which serves 13,000 members.

To further control costs and grow our co-op in a responsible manner, we launched the CoG as an online store that is served from a warehouse located in Emeryville, with easy access to communities in Berkeley and Oakland. Our long term plan is to build a retail business as finances allow.

Biodiesel is better for the environment because it is made from renewable resources and has lower emissions compared to petroleum diesel. It is less toxic than table salt and biodegrades as fast as sugar. Since it is made in the USA from renewable resources such as soybeans, its use decreases our dependence on foreign oil and contributes to our own economy. New York City Focus: Updated Endorsements for November 3rd's Election

In general on this blog I don't deviate from being a DEMOCRAT, because the purpose of this blog is to push progressive DEMOCRATS. In this endorsement list I break that habit for now. In general I think it is appropriate for me to use this forum to advocate exclusively for Democrats. But NYC is a different beast and sometimes it is better to support another kind of progressive. So what follows is a mixed bag of Democrats and progressive third party candidates. I have thought carefully before endorsing these third party candidates and I am comfortable endorsing them, though I don't plan on making a habit of it.

    Mayor: Bill Thompson (Democratic Party)

One of the best things I have heard said about Bill Thompson was meant to disparage his chances: Bill Thompson was accused of "being too much of a gentleman" to win against Bloomberg. Honestly, that comment made me like Thompson more. Thompson is a good, solid Democrat and I think it is about time this very Democratic city stop having dictatorial, pro-business, anti-labor mayors. Mayor Bloomberg isn't bad...for a Republican. But he IS a Republican not just in name but in actions. His education policy has been little more than privatizing our educational system. This has made it a money maker for outside contractors who deal with the increasingly arduous and Byzantine testing and admissions processes, but it doesn't really help parents or students. If students don't do well enough, too often they get dropped from the system so the tests won't be affected. Admissions have become insane and yet have done little to equalize the discrepancies between neighborhoods because only the wealthy have the time and money for the admissions process, the interviews, extra tutoring for tests, etc. And the big results that Bloomberg claims vindicates his "reforms?" They can be seen statewide, even in areas where Bloomberg has had no influence. So how can he lay claim to the changes? Bloomberg has also closed firehouses, yet given tax money to developers. Bloomberg pissed on voters when he bullied the City Council into overturning term limits ONE TIME ONLY, specifically so Bloomberg could have a third term. I have never understood the cult of Bloomberg that many follow. Once he called my wife and me "terrorists" because we protested the Republican National Convention and once I learned that Bloomberg was the number one individual donor to Tom DeLay's ant-choice, anti-environment, right wing PAC, I have disliked him.

So Thompson is too much of a gentleman to win against Bloomberg, thus, I suppose, admitting that Bloomberg is an asshole. Well, I for one hope the gentleman who has consistently been a solid Democrat wins. I hope Thompson, who is pro-labor, can win over anti-labor Bloomberg. Recently Bill Thompson has been endorsed by El Diario. Bill Thompson has also been endorsed by one of my favorite Congresswomen, Nydia M. Velazquez. He has been endorsed by State Senator Eric Adams, Councilmember Letitia James, Councilmember John Liu, Councilmember David Weprin, State Senator Diane Savino, and Congressman Anthony Weiner, all of whom I respect (even if I don't always agree with all of them). Thompson has been endorsed by 504 Democrats, NYC's main disabled rights group, Barack Obama Democratic Club, American Heritage Democratic Club, Gay and Lesbian Independent Democrats, Lambda Independent Democrats, Out People of Color Political Action Club, East Harlem/El Barrio Democratic Club, Gramercy-Stuyvesant Independent Democrats, Village Independent Democrats and West Harlem Independent Democrats. Thompson has been endorsed by Communications Workers of America, United Auto Workers, Uniformed Firefighters Association, Transport Workers Union and the Teamsters. And, of course, many others. To me Thompson represents a good, old fashioned Democrat supported by a good, old fashioned pro-union, pro-LGBT, pro-minority coalition. I would support that any day over a spoiled, dictatorial billionaire.

    Comptroller: John Liu (Democratic Party)

John Liu is ideal for this job. With a degree in mathematical physics, extensive financial experience, City Council and community organizing experience, and overwhelming support of Unions, LGBT groups and local clubs from all Boros, John Liu is one of the best candidates we have seen this year. He will also be the first Asian American EVER to be elected to city wide office in NYC, so he is not only a good choice for the job but it will also be historic when he wins.

22nd City Council district: Lynne Serpe (Green Party). Having already endorsed Green Party candidate David Pechefsky (see below under 39th City Council district) I came across another good Green candidate running against a lousy Dem. Lynne Serpe is the Green Party candidate looking to oust Peter Vallone (a conservative DINO incumbent who voted for Bloomberg's overturning of term limits). And the big surprise is that Lynne Serpe has actually out raised Vallone, making her challenge one to be taken seriously. From the City Hall News:

Vallone, who holds the same Queens seat his father held for almost three decades, had only $40,000 on hand a few weeks before election day, and decided to forego matching funds, figuring that they were a waste of taxpayer money.

But that was before Lynne Serpe, a 38-year-old environmental activist and Green Party candidate for the seat announced that she had $100,000 on hand and qualified for over $70,000 in matching funds.

“There are people in the district who have wanted resources that they haven’t gotten in 35 years,” she said. “I think people are ready for a change...”

“My goal is to win,” she said, explaining that she was buoyed by the surprise primary wins of other left leaning candidates like Danny Dromm. “It’s possible that we’re looking at an entire shift in Western Queens.”

To see the end of the conservative Democrat Vallone dynasty in favor of a more progressive candidate will be sweet. I wish Vallone had been challenged by a good Democrat, but lacking that, I'll take a Green.

34th City Council District: Diana Reyna (Democratic Party). The first woman of Dominican-American descent to be elected to NYC public office, Reyna is being heavily targeted by corrupt Brooklyn Boss Vito Lopez and his scandal-ridden ally, WFP, because she hasn't gone along with Vito Lopez's corruption. In essence, she is being punished for her independence, and I personally want to see more independence in our City Council members. This is another race where we can stop a power play by a corrupt party boss. The Village Voice had this to say about this race during the Democratic Primary:

In the adjoining 34th District, which encompasses a swath of Williamsburg and Bushwick, Lopez is pushing the candidacy of a young woman named Maritza Davila, currently a project director at Ridgewood Bushwick. Lopez is such a Davila fan that he allocated $45,000 in funding for her job there. The money, according to Lopez's legislative initiative form, pays for Davila to take residents to museums, aquariums, and sporting events. She also does double duty: In addition to her day job, Davila serves as a Democratic district leader in Lopez's political club.

Bushwick is Lopez's home base. OK, not his actual residential home. He lives blissfully with Battaglia far from his district in a Queens condo. His political home. He has long controlled the local Council seat, but sometimes, his protégés disappoint him and he is forced to seek their removal. For instance, the incumbent Council member in the district is Diana Reyna, whose training came—where else?—from being a Lopez aide.

Reyna, however, ran afoul of her mentor when she dared to disagree about a large tract of undeveloped land known as the Broadway Triangle. Thanks to his great clout with city and state officials, Lopez arranged to have all of the housing development opportunities there routed to Ridgewood Bushwick and a kindred group, the United Jewish Organizations, which controls social service funds in the Orthodox section of Williamsburg and whose executives happily carry Lopez's election petitions. Lopez has long been a big booster of Mayor Bloomberg, and his influence is such that the city didn't even bother holding its usual competition among would-be developers. It simply
    designated Lopez's chosen groups...

Reyna's opponent lost her primary bid but is still actively running on the Working Families Party line. So we still have to stand up to Vito Lopez on this one. Diana Reyna has been endorsed by Councilwoman Tish James and Congresswoman Nydia Velasquez (both of whom I greatly respect), El Diario/La Presnsa, Lambda Independend Democrats, 504 Democrats (disabled rights), the Teamsters, United Federation of Teachers and others.

36th City Council District (Brooklyn): Mark Winston Griffith (Working Families Party Candidate)

I have now met Mark Winston Griffith and am more impressed now than when I was just going on good reports from mutual friends. Mark is and excellent candidate and would make an excellent Councilman.

Many people know (and can tell by my comments regarding the 34th City Council Race) that I am disgusted by the fact that WFP has been breaking campaign finance laws and has sided with corrupt party boss Vito Lopez this year. To me, WFP was once a great idea that has been descending into the same kind of corruption that they claim to fight. They love to accuse others of being party hacks, but that is exactly what they have become themselves: party hacks surrounded by scandal. But, there are still remnants of the old style, more idealistsic WFP, and among the corrupt and sleazy WFP candidates this year there were some great ones. This includes Debi Rose on Staten Island, John Liu for Comptroller...and Mark Winston Griffith for the 36th City Council seat in Brooklyn. If Griffith wins, he will be the second WFP candidate to win for City Council without the Democratic Party line. Since that first example is Councilmember Tish James, someone I admire and agree with most of the time, and who has become one of the best Democrats in the Council, I believe that for a good progressive, untainted by the current WFP scandals, the WFP line is a good way to get into office.

The incumbent for this seat is Al Vann who is among the least popular incumbents I have ever seen. In fact, I suspect had there only been one opponent in the Democratic Primary, Vann would be history now. But the opposition split the vote and Vann squeaked by the primary with barely 30% of the vote. The man who came in second was Mark Winston Griffith and he has decided to continue the fight on the WFP line. Mark has been Executive Director of the Drum Major Institute for Public Policy and co-director of the Neighborhood Economic Development Advocacy Project and has been a community organizer for years. Mark has been endorsed by the United Auto Workers, Educational Justice PAC and Committee for the Future Leadership of Bedford-Stuyvesant and Crown Heights. I firmly believe that the 36th district would be better served by Mark Winston Griffith than by Al Vann. So I urge a vote on the (I hate to say it) Working Families Party line for Mark Winston Griffith in the 36th City Council district.

39th City Council District (Brooklyn): David Pechefsky (Green Party Candidate)

Most people also know I have seldom sided with the Greens since the 2000 fiasco. Too often the Greens are counterproductive as well as obnoxious purists. But sometimes the Green Party really is an alternative to a Democrat I just can't bring myself to support. This is, I believe, the second time since 2000 that I have endorsed a Green Party candidate. I first heard about David Pechefsky from two of my neighbors. They knew him personally and, though Democrats, were interested in supporting him. At the time I was supporting a Democrat in the running (Josh Skaller) and thought two of the other Democrats (Gary Reilly and Bob Zuckerman) were also good candidates, so I took a dim view of Pechefsky's run given the fact that no fewer than THREE excellent Democrats were vying for the position. Well, none of those three excellent Democrats won. I met Pechefsky and talked with him. He agreed that the candidate I was supporting would be excellent but I gathered he was running in case one of the not so good Democrats won the primary. Which is what happened. The Democrat who won the primary, Brad Lander, is allied with Dov Hikind (a known homophobe and racist), has been publicly anti-Israel, and who has been centrally involved in the WFP campaign funding scandal I mention above. Any one of these would be a reason not to support Lander. Brad Lander is one of those Democrats I feel I can never completely trust even if we agree on most things. He is too blinded by his own sense of self-worth and his own ambition to ever listen to an opposing view. Too often I have seen him face disagreement with disdain or rage. By contrast David Pechefsky is even-tempered, thoughtful and willing to listen to opposing views. Pechefsky seeks to be "a catalyst for a truly democratic City Council, eco-friendly living, and the sensible use of our resources." Unlike many Green Party candidates I have met, Pechefsky has a wide range of practical experience to bring to the City Council. According to his website:

David Pechefsky has 12 years of New York City government experience and has worked with Council Members, advocates, city officials, and service providers on a wide range of housing, youth, senior, health, and economic development programs. He has also consulted internationally working on democratic governance issues in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East...

David is a member of the Park Slope Greens and the Park Slope Food Coop and was recently appointed to the Economic Development Committee of Community Board Six.

I think Pechefsky would represent the district excellently while Brad would too often let personal ambition and ego get in the way of effective governing...and would probably break the law to further his career if he thought he could get away with it. This impression has recently been re-enforced when I learned Brad Lander was sitting next to Rudy Giuliani at an event honoring Mike Bloomberg where Giuliani and Bloomberg made racist innuendos against Thompson. And as far as I know, Brad said nothing against this. So I endorse Green Party candidate David Pechefsky for the 39th City Council district.

    "Brooklyn is Dying"

Friends & Residents of Greater Gowanus (FROGG)

We are a community based grass-roots organization advocating for environmentally sound community planning for the Gowanus Canal neighborhoods.

The Gowanus Canal is a very unique resource for our community and all of New York. It has long historal significant as a pre-industrial and industrial transportation waterway in addition to playing a significant roll in the Battle of Brooklyn. This natural tidal estuary connects our urban world to the waters that surround us and opens our city to the natural habitat it was built upon. Even today, it provides an open sky, early industrial/estuary landscape that can not be matched anywhere in our city.

With extensive urban Brownfields and an Aquatic Brownfield standing, we work to see this water way brought back to life with water quality standards that sincerely meet state standards for fishable and contact use; not only for the community but also for local wildlife.

    BROOKLYN REFORM DEMOCRATIC ORGANIZATIONS:

Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats is a community-based Democratic club. CBID has fought for reform and progressive causes since 1968. As a Brooklyn-based Club, we have been instrumental in the election of many candidates for public office. Much of this success was a result of our question-and-answer forums with prospective candidates as well as our extensive on-the-street contact with our constituents.

Staunchly opposed to political corruption, we are proud of our independence and our commitment to progressive reform in city, state and national politics. We are a vehicle for citizen empowerment and making government more accountable to our neighborhoods.

We meet monthly, usually the fourth Thursday evening of the month in the basement of the Park Slope United Methodist Church, on the corner of 6th ave and 8th street, at 7:30pm. All are welcome.

New Kings Democrats (”NKD”) is a new, grassroots organization in Kings County (Brooklyn), New York whose primary mission is to recruit and prepare individuals to run for Kings County Democratic Committee. NKD hopes to achieve the goal of an inclusionary and participatory democracy by making it easy for individuals to run for local, elected office. NKD will serve as a training ground for individuals seeking higher office, and hopes to build and nurture a new group of Brooklyn Democratic leaders.

    Democracy for NYC in Brooklyn:

Democracy for New York City (DFNYC) is a volunteer-driven non-profit politicalaction committee. We are part of a national coalition of local groups committed to the ideals espoused by Democracy for America, the organization founded by Howard Dean.

We work both locally and nationally to ensure that fiscally-responsible and socially-progressive candidates win elections at all levels of government. We develop innovative ways to advocate for the issues that matter to our members and promote legislation which has a positive effect in our communities. We engage people in the political process and give them the tools to organize, communicate, mobilize, and enact change on the local, state, and national level.

Currently there is only one Brooklyn chapter:

We are committed to serving the diverse community in which we are situated, and beyond, by providing goods and services that promote personal and environmental well-being. Like the 300 food coops across the nation with which we are affiliated, we are open to all—it is not necessary to be a member to shop. By joining the Coop, however, you become a joint owner of our business and are able to take additional savings on your purchases. There are opportunities for varying degrees of involvement in the coop, and our member-owners are able to influence the direction of our organization. We are particularly proud that the dozens of ethnic groups in Brooklyn’s most diverse neighborhood are reflected in our staff, our close to 3,000 members, and countless shoppers.

book club - just come and learn from peers, trade jokes, vent

True News from ChangeNYC.Org: ChangeNYC.Org is an organization unifying our City’s Democratic Party by welcoming all New Yorkers back into the political process. We are a coalition of real, everyday New Yorkers – young voters, progressives, neighborhood leaders, community bloggers, good government groups, and even conservatives – who believe that in cooperation we can bring the change to our City that together we have begun to bring to our nation.

    Alternative Energy in NY State:

Here are some stats from Repower America:

    * A $2 billion investment by Spanish energy company, Iberdrola, will double New York's 1,000-megawatt wind capacity to 2,000-megawatts - providing enough electricity for nearly 600,000 homes.

    * New York's energy efficiency programs save enough electricity to power almost 115,000 homes for a whole year, save almost $140 million in energy costs, and prevent the greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to taking over 60,000 cars off the road. Although great progress, the state still has much more potential to increase its energy efficiency.

    * The state has a renewable portfolio standard (RPS) that requires all public utilities to generate 24% of their electricity from renewable energy resources by 2013.

What you can do for Clean Energy:

For pennies per month more than you currently pay for energy you can buy 100% green energy from Con-Ed. Joy and I have been doing it for years, seriously reducing our carbon footprint and giving NY State cleaner air. Here's how it works:

Clean Energy for Residential & Small Business Customers ConEdison Solutions is leading the way in promoting pollution-free electricity by offering WIND and GREEN Power - clean, 100% renewable power. Instead of drawing on traditional power sources, such as nuclear power and fossil fuel sources, GREEN Power is generated from regional wind and low-impact hydropower sources. GREEN Power is composed of 65% run-of-the-river hydro and 35% wind power. See content label WIND Power is composed of electricity exclusively generated from 100% wind power. The benefit of clean energy is that it produces none of the detrimental environmental effects associated with electricity production that results in air emissions.

ConEdison Solutions is committed to making a difference in the environment and together we have the opportunity to help make a powerful impact. The cost for renewable energy has fallen dramatically in recent years and is only a fraction higher than electricity generated from traditional power sources. ConEdison Solutions' GREEN Power costs only an additional one cent per kilowatt-hour (kWh) more than our standard offer and WIND Power is an additional 2.5 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) more than our standard offer. Upgrading to renewable energy makes a difference and is a very affordable way to show that you care about the future of our environment.

The Environmental Business Association is the not-for-profit trade association dedicated to supporting the growth of the environmental industry in New York State. Specifically, we help to promote and serve serving the industry sectors of Climate Change, Greening Communities, Energy and WALCE (Water-Agriculture-Land Use-Conservation-Environmental). News here. Events list here (not recently updated).

NY Citizens for Clean Elections: We are committed to passage of Clean Money Clean Election legislation in NYS that provides a non-partisan approach for full public funding of campaigns for all qualified candidates who refuse private money and abide by spending limits. We want to ensure that all Americans, regardless of wealth, have an equal voice in the political system and that qualified candidates are not discouraged from running because they do not have access to the money needed for a competitive campaign.

The Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats is a community-based Democratic club.
