The Progressive Democrat Newsletter grew out of the frustration of the 2004 election. Originally intended for New York City progressives, its readership is now national. For anyone who wants to be alerted by email whenever this newsletter is updated (usually weekly), please send your email address and let me know what state you live in (so I can keep track of my readership).
I am going to begin with a blog entry by someone new to blogging but very experienced in life. Helen is an 82 year old grandmother who has started blogging...and she is saying what we are all thinking about Sarah Palin:
Who can turn the world on with her smile? Who can take a nothing day and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?
Well it’s NOT you girl…
Look. I am going to say what everyone at CNN, CBS, ABC and NBC is thinking but is afraid to say. Governor Palin is a stupid, conniving bitch. And it’s not because she is a strong woman - I like strong women… worship them… It’s actually the opposite. She is a weak, pathetic woman who thinks big hair, winking, baby talk and self deprecation is somehow becoming of a woman who wants to lead the free world. My god, where is Margaret Thatcher when you need her!
But what really makes me mad is the hypocrisy. She claims to be a Washington outsider and yet is the worst kind of politician. She will say anything and avoid answering any question instead choosing to spout whatever line or soundbite some adviser put into her mouth a few hours earlier. And exactly when did sounding like a hick make someone “more like us”. Last time I checked we were a country striving to educate our children to be intelligent and honest. I think I would die if my daughter came home from school and said something like “I gotta tell ya. Change is a comin’.” At the very least I would remove the Beverly Hillbillies from her approved TV viewing list.
And it gets better from there. Thank you Helen! Most of America agrees with you!
But best of all, in the comments Helen responds to someone saying America is too racist to elect a black president. Helen's response:
Oh Honey. If an old woman originally from Georgia can see the light. Anyone can. Have a little faith.
Have a little faith. From an old woman originally from Georgia to, as I cover in this issue, West Virginia miners to the Stockton Record and Seattle Times, America is seeing the light. Keep in mind this is also the week that West Virginia polls show Obama ahead for the first time...and 8 points ahead!
But we're not there yet...we have a few more weeks of hard work ahead of us. Once again I am going to continue to push a few ideas from recent weeks on how each and every one of us can participate in Obama's victory. First off, on Daily Kos there is an effort to do virtual phone banks to voters in North Carolina on behalf of the Obama campaign. Virtual phone banking can be done by anyone in any place from their own home and was an extremely successful strategy in winning Congressional races in 2006. This strategy basically brings Americans together one-on-one by phone. To join in, please email kim (dot) yaman (at) gmail (dot) com and ask how. You can also read about it here.
Next, I want to urge my readers to take some time and help our friends in North Carolina elect Kay Hagen to the US Senate right from your home. This is the kind of project that won big in 2006. Let's repeat the same success in 2008. Winning North Carolina is important in four ways. There is a close House race (Larry Kissell), a close and ever-tightening Senate race (Kay Hagen), a close governor's race (Bev Perdue), and there is a shot at Obama winning the state. Some effort now could have huge results in November. This race is now officially a toss up.
Another way you can help is virtual phone banking for Jill Derby for Congress in Nevada:
You call the voter and read the easy-to-follow phone script, record the responses of the voter and click ENTER. The information is automatically recorded in the campaign’s database. If you reach an answering machine or voice mail, you can leave a short message for the voter. Make as many calls as you can and if you finish them all, you can sign up for more.
Questions? Want to organize your friends as a team to call for Jill? Call Derby for Congress Field Director Julie Wedge at 775-770-2008.
Finally, from Marjorie I get the following:

OHIO: Contact Rosie Goldensohn, Out of State Director. Long-term volunteers should call her directly at 614-743-4365. rgoldensohn@ohioforchange.com or volunteerohio@ohioforchange.com

Do whatever you can, even if it's just for a day or only a couple of hours of phone banking. As Howard Dean says, "You have the power." As Jim Dean says, "We must take ownership of the process."
John McCain has pulled out of Michigan, effectively ceding that part of the rust belt to Obama. Well, I've been saying it for years now, quite literally: It's STILL the Economy, Stupid! That is something the Bushs and McCain have never understood. Americans do NOT want more trickle down "Voodoo" economics when they can barely afford to heat their homes, feed their children and get healthcare.
More than 440 workers who are members of the United Mine Workers of America took what's called a Memorial Day instead of going to work.
Union officials say they took the day to protest after a film crew from the National Rifle Assocation showed up at the Consol mine last week to interview union workers.
They say the crew tried to get union coal miners to speak out against Barak Obama.
I'd say that backfired on the mine owner and the NRA.
Aren't these the very people that every predicted would never, NEVER support a black for President? Seems to me Americans are far more mature than people were giving them credit for. Working class America is willing to walk out on their jobs to show their support for Barack Obama. I think this means that Obama probably has not just Michigan, but also Pennsylvania sewn up. Does this mean Obama has a shot at West Virginia? That might be pushing it, but right now McCain is only 6 points ahead of Obama...and Obama is catching up. So you never know.
The latest Republican to get caught in a scandal is Senator Norm Coleman of Minnesota. He seems to be getting hit with a bunch of scandals all at once. Of course this will come as no suprise to those who know that Coleman is good buddies with Alaska's Ted Stevens, currently indicted for corruption and who I have dubbed the most corrupt politician in America. Seems some of Ted Stevens' greedy mentality has rubbed off on Norm Coleman.
But Coleman's violations of the Senate Ethics rules goes even further. Coleman basically receives vacations to the Bahamas and Paris, suits and other goodies from Minnesota businessman Nasser Kazeminy. And just who is Norm Coleman's wonderful patron? You guessed it. He's a government contractor. Norm Coleman is receiving gifts from someone whose company gets government contracts. This kind of thing is frowned upon in any political position, but it is an outright violation of the ethics rules for Senators. Coleman, of course, is denying any wrongdoing, but let's remember that when a Democrat, Senator Bob Torricelli of New Jersey, did the exact same thing, he was reprimanded by the Senate Select Committee on Ethics and retired. Funny how the Democratic Party actually fights corruption within its ranks while Republicans circle the wagons and defend even their most corrupt members.
Norm Coleman may not be around much longer, though. Democrat Al Franken is catching up fast in the polls. And with Minnesota voters increasingly seeing Norm Coleman's behavior as "shameful," I think Franken has a good shot.
Here are a couple of powerful videos from Al Franken's website showing how people view Norm Coleman.
First, Iraq War vet Sam Scott calls Norm Coleman's attacks "the same old shameful Washington politics" and tells Minnesotans why he's proud to stand with Al Franken.
Next, after the Star Tribune and KSTP-TV blasted ads from the Coleman campaign and the National Republican Senatorial Committee as false and misleading, the Al Franken for Senate campaign today released a new television ad featuring Minnesota women expressing their disgust and outrage at the depths to which Norm Coleman has sunk.
Norm Coleman: just another shameful Bush Republican who stoops to corruption, lies and smears.
Republican Corruption in Washington State: Dino Rossi Breaks the Law
Seems that Washington State Republican gubenatorial candidate Dino Rossi is a bona fide part of the Republican Culture of Corruption. It is hard, these days, to find a law-abding Republican anymore! From Daily Kos:
It's well known in Washington state that Republican gubenatorial candidate Dino Rossi is essentially a subsidiary of the Building Industry Association of Washington (BIAW). Check that--a subsidiary of the corrupt BIAW. Washington's attorney general has filed suit against the organization, along with the tweedle dum to its dee, the Master Builders Association (MBA), last week. The two organizations have been funneling hundreds of thousands of dollars into Republican campaigns, particularly Rossi's. The state's Public Disclosure Commission found the BIAW and MBA guilty of multiple "egregious" campaign finance violations, which led to the AG's suit.
So, was Rossi an unwitting beneficiary of these illegat activities, or was he an active participant? Well, we can get it right from the horse's ass (yes...that's the name of the website):
Documents released today reveal that Republican gubernatorial candidate Dino Rossi was not only aware of the Building Industry Association of Washington’s (BIAW) illegal fundraising activities, but that he actively solicited funds on their behalf from at least one organization, the Master Builder’s Association (MBA). According to a summary of events posted by attorney Knoll Lowney:
When MBA leadership met...on May 21, 2007 at a “Chair Officers Meeting,” the discussion turned to BIAW’s pending request for campaign funds. While discussing the request, all three of the MBA’s top officers reported that they had received calls from Dino Rossi. The one call for which additional detail is provided clearly confirms that Rossi called to support a MBA contribution to the BIAW’s governor’s race war chest. The minutes leave no question that Dino Rossi spoke to this officer about whether and when MBA would give to the BIAW’s governor campaign fund. The officers receiving calls from Rossi were then-MBA President Doug Barnes, First Vice President Joe Schwab, and Second Vice President John Day.
So Rossi was a DIRECT PARTICIPANT in these illegal activities. Yet ANOTHER corrupt Republican who disregards the laws that the rest of us have to follow.
Rossi called not one, but at least three MBA board members to solicit funds for “the BIAW’s war chest,” a war chest that was explicitly described at the MBA’s previous meeting as “a fund for Rossi.” And it is clear, both from the context of this excerpt, and from the stated response to Rossi from MBA Second VP John Day, that the subject of those calls was indeed these solicited funds.
What should now be absolutely obvious to even the most objective observer is that Rossi was an active participant in the BIAW’s illegal fundraising scheme… a scheme for which the PDC found the BIAW guilty of multiple “egregious” violations of Washington’s campaign finance and disclosure laws, and which is now being prosecuted by the Attorney General’s office.
But it is important to note that even if the BIAW had scrupulously conducted its campaign within the letter of the law (and it didn’t), Rossi would still be guilty of a major violation of our campaign statutes, for it is absolutely positively 100% illegal (not to mention grossly unethical) for a candidate to coordinate activities with an independent expenditure campaign.
The Republican Culture of Corruption still plagues this country. America must reject this kind of crap...and it HAS been. Rossi's disregard for the law should be his downfall if voters care ANYTHING for values, honesty and the law.
Republican Inaction Leads to Crisis in North Carolina. Once again, the lessons of Katrina were not learned. Even as natural disasters are predicted and tracked with greater accuracy than ever, the Bush administration refuses to prevent these crises.
North Carolina is a Senate battleground this year and we have a pretty good shot at winning. Dole has shown a pretty dismal record if you look carefully, as this person does.
Kay Hagen has recently been running consistently ahead of Dole, even if it just by a few points. I think we can win this one! From Hagen's website:
Here is Kay Hagan discussing energy policy and jobs:
I notice Hagan's campaign seems extremely well organized, which will really increase her chances of winning. You can help in many ways by signing up here. Even if you aren't in North Carolina you can help by phone banking from home (a strategy that worked extremely well in a NY State Congressional race in 2006!)
Next let me highlight Larry Kissell, running for Congress. Larry almost certainly won in 2006, but voter fraud that lost thousands of votes, probably stealing the election. What is most disturbing is that most of those votes that were "lost" were military voters. Kissell is runnig again and is very likely to win. He was a Textile Worker for 27 years and is now a teacher at East Montgomery High School. Sounds like an ideal Democrat!
Roy Carter has dedicated his life thus far to educating young people, motivating them to achieve their goals and being a positive, affirming influence in their lives. Throughout his career as Educator, Football Coach and Athletic Director, Roy has always considered community involvement crucial to student success. Leading by example, he has consistently volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, working to build homes for hard working families. Through his leadership and innovation several student and community programs were created to combat drop-out rates, drug and alcohol abuse, and illiteracy. In 1997, one such program was instrumental in Andrews High School naming Roy as its Teacher of the Year. Roy has been a member of the North Carolina Coaches Association for over thirty years, being chosen as Conference Coach of the Year in 1993 and Coach for the annual East / West All-Star game in 1998. Additionally, Roy has been actively involved in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, and was elected to the North Carolina High School Association Re-Alignment Committee in 1999, receiving the Merit Award and receiving the Award of Achievement in 1995.
After many years as a science teacher, Roy transitioned into teaching agricultural science and woodworking. In-between the various family, religious, and community activities, Carter maintains a crop of 4,000 Fraser Firs.
Carter's opponent, Virginia Foxx, is one of the infamous Katrina 11, Republicans who vote for no-bid contracts for the corrupt Halliburtion but opposed aid to the victims of Katrina. I have been targeting the Katrina 11 ever since their infamous opposition to helping Katrina victims. Not only is Foxx one of only 11 Republicans who opposed helping Katrina victims, she also is one of only 33 Republicans who opposed extension of the Voting Rights Act in July 2006. He biggest contribution to American law making was to introduce an act to praise the Christmas Tree industry. So she loves Christmas trees but hates black people and refuses to help Americans in need.

Governors Debate Biofuels (and a reminder of my own view on biofuels). Seems to me oil and coal producing states are pushing to stop biofuels, corn and soy producing states want biofuels based on corn and soy, and wood producing states want biofuels based on wood. No surprise there. But we really do need a smart policy here.

Gordon Smith Supports Bush's Failed Economy Policy. As the economy crumbles, don't you think it is time to stop making the same Republican mistakes that have nearly ruined our country? Gordon Smith apparently thinks we should keep ruining our economy. Of course so do other Republicans.
In the race for State Treasurer, it seems that Republican Allen Alley's anemic fundraising ($45,000 cash on hand) has left him stuck in the mud -- with his only option trying to fling some at his opponent, Ben Westlund. (also h/t to Blue Oregon)
The Florida 2000, Georgia 2002 and Ohio 2004 elections have taught us that partisan, corrupt secretaries of state can help steal an election. Or at least can prevent a proper recount. So from 2006 on the Secretary of State Project (SoS) has focused on electing fair, honest secretaries of states around the country...and they did well in 2006, electing Jennifer Brunner in Ohio, for example.
Building on their 2006 success, the SoS Project is strategically focusing on a handful of key races this year, including county-level races, to ensure fair, clean elections in 2008 and beyond. Oregon is one state where they are active in 2008. In Oregon, Democrat Kate Brown is running against GOP nominee Rick Dancer.
From Kate's website:
Senator Kate Brown began her career in public service over sixteen years ago. First elected to the Oregon House of Representatives in 1991, Kate served two successful terms in the House before being elected to the Oregon State Senate in 1996. In 1998, Senator Brown was elected Democratic Leader, where she successfully led the Senate Democratic Caucus from a 10-20 Minority to an 18-12 Majority.
With Democrats squarely in the majority, Kate Brown was elected by her caucus to serve as the Oregon’s first woman Senate Majority Leader in 2004...
Senator Brown has served as Chair of the Senate Rules and Elections Committees for years, stewarding landmark initiative reform legislation and moving Oregon to the forefront of transparent campaign finance reporting.
In 2001, the Republican controlled Legislature passed redistricting plans for legislative and congressional districts that Governor Kitzhaber vetoed. As Democratic Leader, Kate Brown took charge of offering an alternative plan for our Congressional districts – one that the Oregon courts adopted in its entirety.
In the 2005 legislative session, Brown led successful efforts to make Oregon’s state government open and accessible by taking legislative committee meetings to communities around the state, ensuring funding for a comprehensive review of Oregon’s ethics laws, and spearheading legislation creating a searchable online database of campaign contributions and expenditures, which The Oregonian called the best campaign finance disclosure law in the country.
Additionally, Brown led the Senate Democrats in their efforts to reduce the skyrocketing costs of health care, ensure that Oregon’s education dollars reach the classroom, and protect Oregon’s uniquely livable communities. With her strong record of public service, integrity and fairness, Kate Brown has been the recipient many awards and distinctions including:
* National Public and Community Service Award from the American Mental Health Counselors Association * Elected Chair of the Council of State Governments West. * “Profiles in Courage" Award from Basic Rights Oregon * Legislature of the Year Award from the Oregon Psychological Association * Award for Outstanding Achievement by the Oregon Family Support Network * Woman of Achievement Award from the Oregon Commission for Women.
Kate Brown has been endorsed by Barbara Roberts (Former Governor and Secretary of State), Working Families Party, SEIU Locals 503 and 49, Oregon Small Business for Responsible Leadership, Carpenters Local 1065, and many, many others. Visit her website and learn more about her. And volunteer if you can. The secretary of state race is one we should be focused on in each and every state of the Union!
OREGON SENATE:
Oregon is one of our pick-up opportunities for 2008. Jeff Merkley has come up from behind and now is the frontrunner in this race by some 4 points. Merkley has MAJOR union support as well as the support of the Sierra Club, Planned Parenthood, 21st Century Democrats, and Council for a Livable World, among MANY others. You can read Merkley's stands on the issues here.

Assemblyman John Oceguera Candidate for Nevada State Assembly, Assembly District 16 Enrolled Member of the Walker River Paiute Tribe
Assemblyman John Oceguera is seeking re-election to the Nevada State Legislature for District 16 in Southeast Las Vegas. He currently serves as the Assembly Majority Leader, and while not in session, is the Assistant Fire Chief in the North Las Vegas Fire Department. He is a member of the Walker River Paiute Tribe...
Assemblyman Oceguera began college at UNLV, but relocated to San Antonio to open a new airline branch for America West. Oceguera wanted to be a firefighter his entire life. He has worked for the NAS Fallon Fire Department, and as a firefighter, paramedic, engineer, Captain and Assistant Fire Chief at the North Las Vegas Fire Department. He holds an impressive amount of fire, safety, medical and rescue certifications from the State of Nevada, American Red Cross, Department of the Navy, and the National Fire Academy.
In 2000, he was elected to the state legislature. During his time in the assembly, he has chaired both the Transportation Committee and the Committee on Commerce and Labor. He has also served as the Assistant Majority Leader, and in 2003 he was appointed to a Toll Fellowship, a bipartisan organization which trains new legislators nationwide.
During the last session, Assemblyman Oceguera sponsored new laws to strengthen consumer protection, to prevent violence against children and the elderly, and laws against graffiti and terrorism. Al Franken, is running for Senate in Minnesota and is one of the key progressives we have to elect. Al Franken has pulled AHEAD of Coleman in three recent polls.
Here is Al Franken speaking on energy policy:
And find out about Norm Coleman's poor job in holding government accountable:
Here are some excellent progressive candidates in Minnesota (all endorsed by Progressive Majority):
Kevin Staunton Candidate for State Representative - District 41A (Challenger) Edina in Hennepin County
Kevin Staunton is the city attorney for Excelsior and a progressive leader running for the State House in District 41A. We recruited Kevin with the help of the local DFL party unit specifically to run for this seat. District 41A is one of the top pick-up targets in the state. In 2004, John Kerry became the first Democrat to win the district in two generations with 51.5% of the vote. Kevin's Republican opponent is unclear at this time. The nine-term moderate incumbent, Ron Erhardt, lost the GOP endorsement last month to an ultra-conservative challenger. It is unclear whether Erhardt will run in the Republican primary or whether he will run as an Independent. Kevin has been a leading advocate of progressive reforms in Minnesota, particularly through greater investment in our public schools and transportation infrastructure.
Gail Kulick Jackson Candidate for State Representative - District 16A (Challenger) Sherburne, Mille Lacs, Benton and Morrison Counties, including St. Cloud and Little Falls
Gail Kulick Jackson is an attorney in Milaca, running for the Minnesota State House in District 16A. Although Gail has been a candidate for the state House twice before (in 2004 and 2006), we actively recruited Gail to run again because of her strong progressive leadership in her community. The Republican is a six-term incumbent and is one of the most conservative members of the Minnesota House. Gail has been a progressive champion, and if elected, will work to protect civil rights and expand vital investments in the state.
Jim Godfrey Candidate for State Representative - District 17A (Challenger) Isanti and Chisago Counties, including Cambridge and North Blanco
Jim Godfrey is a teacher and Education Minnesota member from Cambridge running for the state House in District 17A. We recruited Jim with the help of Education Minnesota leaders. Jim's Republican opponent is four-term incumbent Rob Eastlund, who presents himself as a moderate but has a very conservative voting record. Several neighboring Republican incumbents have lost since 2004, and Eastlund is vulnerable as the district shifts. Jim is running to restore representation for average working Minnesotans, focusing on improving our health care affordability, ensuring high quality public schools, and protecting our environment. If elected, Jim will bring common sense and a strong union background to St. Paul.
Grace Baltich Candidate for State Representative - District 32A (Challenger) Dayton, Maple Grove and Rogers in Hennepin County
Grace Baltich is an accomplished social worker and AFSCME Council 65 member running for the state House in District 32A. Grace ran unsuccessfully in 2006. We have been working with Grace to help her create a campaign plan, a fundraising strategy and a message that will allow her to stress her strong progressive vision. Grace is committed to running a progressive campaign focused on building a strong, socially-just community for all children and families.
Mike Obermueller Candidate for State Representative - District 38B (Challenger) Farmington and Hastings in Dakota County
Mike Obermueller is an attorney from Eagan, running for the Minnesota House of Representatives in District 38B. Although Mike ran in 2006 (and lost by just 163 votes), we actively recruited him to run again, this time emphasizing his core, progressive values. We have worked with him to develop a comprehensive campaign plan, a detailed financial strategy, and a progressive message. Eagan is the home of Republican Governor Tim Pawlenty, and has been trending Democratic over the past three election cycles. The Republican three-term incumbent is increasingly vulnerable as his voting record diverges from the needs of the District, especially on education and transportation. Mike is running to help rebuild the Minnesota miracle, to ensure the economic, educational, and civic success of our state.
Jerry Pitzrick Candidate for State Representative - District 42B (Challenger) Eden Prairie in Hennepin County
Jerry Pitzrick is a civil engineer from Eden Prairie running for in District 42B. We recruited Jerry based on his active role (with his wife Deb) in the local DFL and his commitment to progressive values. With seven-term incumbent Erik Paulson running for U.S. House this year, the seat has recently become an open seat. There are two Republican challengers, neither of whom has held elective office. If elected, Jerry will be a leading voice for infrastructure investments and a progressive tax system. Fielding a candidate in this race continues our work in Eden Prairie - we successfully ran Kim Ross in 2007, who is now a leading member of the Eden Prairie School Board.
Ted Butler Candidate for State Representative - District 49A (Open Seat) Andover and Ham Lake in Anoka County
Ted Butler works at the University of Minnesota managing the finances of its self-insured employee health plan, and is running for the open seat in District 49A. During the buildup of his campaign, the Republican incumbent decided not to run for re-election, creating an open seat. The Republican candidate to succeed the incumbent is ultra-conservative Peggy Scott, who is running as a self-described tax watchdog. Ted has already been debating her for several years - they both serve on the Andover Parks Commission. Ted will be a champion for progressive values, working to ensure that all families are treated fairly and that the time tax caused by failing roads and bridges is properly mitigated.
Danna Elling-Schultz Candidate for Hastings City Council - Ward 4 (Incumbent)
Danna Elling-Schultz is a DFL researcher in the Minnesota Senate and a candidate for re-election to the City Council of Hastings. Danna has been a long-standing champion for public education funding and smart investment in suburban communities. If re-elected, she will continue to work against unfettered development and ensure fair and equal treatment of families in Hastings.
