    Progressive Democrat Issue 157

This week saw some more primaries and caucuses, and Obama and Clinton remain neck and neck. And Democratic turnout for the primaries and caucuses remains at record highs while Republican turnout remains very low, showing the difference in enthusiasm within the two parties. I remain convinced that both Clinton and Obama would be excellent Presidents. But I have to say that Clinton's campaign did two things that are extremely disappointing recently. First they photoshopped a picture of Obama to make him look darker in order to play on people's racism. There is no other reason to darken a person's skin but to play on racism, and this is a decidedly REPUBLICAN tactic, the EXACT tactic that was used by Karl Rove in the Tennessee Senate race in 2006. I lost considerable respect for Clinton for doing this. This was just plain wrong and I wish she would repudiate the tactic.

Second, Clinton herself implied that McCain would make a better President than Obama. Given that McCain is offering America nothing but warmed over, failed Bush policies, this is dead wrong.

I am sorry that Clinton is using these tactics. It is common in primaries for things to get nasty, but by playing on racism, she is lowering herself. By implying McCain might be better than Obama she is not only lying, but betraying the Democratic Party and using Nader-like tactcs. I want to maintain my respect for Clinton and be ready to support her enthusiastically if she wins the nomination. But when she uses these tactics, it severely disappoints me and alienates many Democrats.

In the end I hope we all come together behind either candidate. Among my readers are avid Obama supporters, avid Hillary supporters, as well as Edwards, Richardson and Kucinich supporters who still have to decide between Obama and Clinton. Our main goal should be defeating "Third Bush Term" McCain. Clinton and Obama are infinitely better than McCain, so they get my support. But if you are a Clinton supporter, I urge you to write her campaign and complain about these tactics.

As I write this, voting is taking place in a special election for the IL-14 Congressional seat. This was Dennis Hastert's seat, and it is neck and neck for Bill Foster and the Republican candidate. A win for Bill Foster would be a HUGE deal, replacing a corrupt Republican with a brilliant scientist and succesful businessman. I have no idea who will win, but I sure hope Foster wins. I think I have done all I can for Foster, so all I can do is just wait and see what happens.

Even more important than picking up House seats, and even arguably more important than winning the White House, is getting solid control over the Senate. Right now it really is about 50/50 conservative/progressive, taking Joe Lieberman and Dick Cheney's vote into account. We need to win at least one, and preferably several, seats in the Senate to decisively pull this nation to a more reasonable, pro-Constitution, pro-working class and middle clasee agenda. Here are the states where there is a consensus that Democrats have an even chance or better to win: Alaska, Colorado, New Mexico, New Hampshire, Virginia, Minnisota, Oregon.

These are the most competitive races for Senate. There are other races that I really think we have a shot at, like North Carolina and Texas. But Alaska, Minnesota, Colorado, New Mexico, New Hampshire, Virginia, and Oregon are our best shots right now. I will go out on a limb here and suggest that each and every one of these states, as well as North Carolina, are swing states for the Presidential election as well, depending on which candidate we nominate (Clinton and Obama each have their strengths in the general). They aren't the ONLY swing states, but each will be (I believe) critical for determining who wins the general election. Yes...even Alaska. I believe that is becoming a semi-blue, swing state, if we pay attention to it. So each and every one of these states is critical for the Senate AND the Presidency. If you click on any of the states above, you can donate to win the Senate and any close House races in that state, all of which will help win the Presidency. And if you live in those states, your involvement in campaigns, writing letters to the editor, and talking to friends and neighbors can help win those states.

And let's not forget, simply winning more seats for the Democrats isn't enough. We also need to challenge the old-style, capitulating Democratic mainstream to get more progressives into office. It isn't just MORE Democrats, it's also BETTER Democrats. That is why I focus on Progressive Majority candidates (see Arizona and Wisconsin Focus for these candidates) and why I have a Progressive Primaries Act Blue Site which deals with such primaries.

I apologize for the number of donation requests in this issue, but it is crunch time for fundraising. I try to provide alternative actions for people who can't donate. Donate, Volunteer, and/or Write Letters to the Editor. Those are the ways we will win both nationally and locally.

Worth Repeating: McCain Embraced by the Bush Family

Now that the Little Bush has officially joined Big Bush and Jeb Bush in endorsing John "Endless Recession and Endless War" McCain (before it was more implied than official), I will repeat my post on the Bush family's love for the fake "maverick" McCain. This is from 2 weeks ago but bears repeating.

The Big Bush, Little Gerogie Bush, and Jeb Bush have all given John McCain their approval. Could there be a worse endorsement?

The Bush family have brought us two of the least popular Presidents in American history.

The Bush family helped arm Saddam Hussein before declaring him our enemy. They have brought us two Iraq wars, the most recent has turned into a quagmire sucking our soldiers and dollars down with no end in sight and no exit stratgy and no strategic purpose.

The Bush family helped arm al-Qaeda, then stupidly ignored warnings of an impending attack, allowing al-Qaeda to hit us hard. And they have failed to stop al-Qaeda even AFTER they attacked us.

The Bush family has brought us some of the worst economic times since the Great Depression, giving us no fewer than three rescessions with little recovery under their watch. Job growth under the Bush family has been rock bottom.

The Bush family represents nothing but failed domestic policy, failed foreign policy and deficits, deficits, deficits. About the only people who still like the Bush family are their good friends in Saudi Arabia: the Royal Saud family and their close allies, the bin Laden family.

The Bush family, Jebbie, Big George and Wee George, have all endorsed John McCain. They believe, it seems, that John McCain is the best choice to continue the failed Bush policies that have CONSISTENTLY brought us record deficits, failed foreign policy and recession after recession.

America is sick and tired of failed Bush policies. No more Bush quagmires. No more Bush recessions. Just say "No!" to John McCain, the choice of the Bush family.

WE ARE THE BUSH FAMILY...AND WE APPROVE OF JOHN McCAIN!

Wisconsin Democratic Party's Response to the Bush Endorsement of McCain

Well I'm not the only one who thinks McCain's Third Bush Term agenda sucks. The Wisconsin Democratic Party sent out this email covering very similar points.

Today, President Bush endorsed Senator John McCain. Never before has it
been clearer. John McCain promises Wisconsin families a third Bush term.

Help us beat John McCain in November!

We need your support starting today to make sure John McCain doesn’t
deliver on his promise of a third Bush term.

Hours after clinching his Party’s nomination, the one-time “maverick”
completed his transformation into a full-fledged Bush Republican by heading
to the White House this afternoon to receive President Bush’s formal
    endorsement.

John McCain stands with President Bush’s decision to deny health care for
Wisconsin children by vetoing SCHIP expansion, threatened the retirement
security of Wisconsin seniors by promising to privatize Social Security,
further strained Wisconsin’s reserve and national guard units by promising
to keep our troops in Iraq for 100 years, and promised more of the same on
everything from ethics to the economy.

In fact, despite widespread economic anxieties facing working families in
Wisconsin and across America, McCain said he thinks the economy is strong
and refuses to say whether he supports President Bush’s threat to veto a
Democratic bill to help struggling homeowners fighting to avoid
    foreclosure.

By rushing to President Bush’s side today, McCain is showing Wisconsinites
that a vote for John McCain is a vote for a third Bush term.

Help us beat John McCain by contributing today.

Wisconsin deserves better than a third Bush term. Together, let’s keep
    Wisconsin blue!

    The FISA Fight and Congress

Daily Kos had some good coverage of the FISA fight this week, an important issue I have been lax about covering. Here's the article with some really good suggestions about what to do:

The "Defense of Democracies" group, those great patriots who are trying to shred the Constitution by running deceptive, fear-mongering ads against Democrats, have just placed another ad buy. They've also been using robocalls and push polling to try to define this debate.

Their target continues to be the group of freshman who who they consider to be particularly vulnerable , or who refused to be bullied by the administration on FISA and retroactive amnesty for the telcos. They see these members as the weak link in the coalition standing against the administration and the Republicans.

These industry funded groups have a really big stick compared to us. And they are using it to pound these vulnerable Freshman. It's a wedge the right is driving into the Democratic caucus, and it has the effect of making leadership start looking for "compromise" because they are worried about losing a good chunk of their majority-preserving margin.

We can counterbalance that pressure by supporting those targeted Dems who continue to stand up to Bush.

    MoveOn.org Takes on John McCain

While many of us are watching the Democratic Primary with some excitement, John McCain is now the Annointed Heir of the Bush Family, and he is starting the smear attacks and lies against the Democrats. MoveOn.org has decided that their top priority is to counter the Republican smear tactics as early as possible.

    This comes from MoveOn.org:

    Dear MoveOn member,

It's official: John McCain is the Republican nominee. That means that as of today, his No. 1 priority will be attacking our candidates.

He's already accusing both Clinton and Obama of wanting to "surrender" to terrorists because they want to end the disastrous occupation in Iraq.1 And now his attacks will get much louder: He's got access to enormous party resources, including the whole Republican noise machine.

While our candidates battle it out for the nomination, someone has to keep an eye on John McCain and the Republicans. That's why we're launching an emergency fund to make sure that every time McCain accuses Democrats of "surrender"—or something similar—he's held accountable for it. Can you chip in to help fight the Republican attack machine?

Our plan is big: We'll have fact-checkers in place to push back on the media, we'll work with movement partners to make sure progressives are ready to fight back with facts, and we'll invest in rapid-response advertising to make sure their charges don't go unanswered.

Here's why it's crucial. Starting today, McCain won't be attacking the Democrats on his own.

He's heading over to the White House as we speak to get George Bush's blessing as the Republican nominee. This means that McCain, Bush and the entire Republican Party will shift from concentrating on the primary race to working on November's general election. Attacking our candidates will become their central focus. And they've got hundreds of millions of dollars between them to do it.

They've already started accusing both candidates of "surrender," and framing their universal health care plans as socialist. And then there's the really dirty stuff—including despicable whisper campaigns about religion, race, gender and patriotism.2,3

Our job is to make sure that our candidate, whoever it is, can hit the ground running once we have a nominee. That means that we have to fight this stuff every day—especially because our candidates are focused on each other.

Please chip in today to help us fight back with facts. Click to contribute.

    Thanks for all you do,

Right Wing Fanatics Hate Rape Victims

Yet more from Wisconsin. Pure coincidence that Wisconsin gets so much attention this week.

Sometimes the disgusting meanness of Right Wing Republicans just amazes me. It seems that in Wisconsin there was a bi-partisan bill that guarantees that medically accurate information is given to rape victims by the doctors who treat them, and ensures that if they ask for emergency contraception, it will be provided. The bill has passed both state houses and is headed for the Governor's desk. But this really shows how we still have to work hard to root out this kind of right wing fanaticism in America.

This comes from the Wisconsin Democratic Party:

Kapanke Rejects Compassionate Care for Rape Victims…Again

Senator votes against bi-partisan rape victim's bill for 3rd time

Madison - Senator Dan Kapanke Thursday voted against the "Compassionate Care for Rape Victims Bill" for a third time in his short career in the State Senate. In doing so, he was one of only 6 Senators to vote against this bi-partisan legislation, which passed even the Republican controlled Assembly by a vote of 61-35.

"It's pretty sad to see Senator Kapanke and the far right playing partisan games with the victims of these horrible crimes," said Senate Majority Leader Russ Decker. "Fortunately this time there was enough bi-partisan support to prevent him from killing the bill."

Kapanke has a long history of toeing the radical right's line on opposing compassionate care. In 2007 he was one of only 6 Senators to oppose this bill. Worse still, in 2005 Kapanke used his vote to ban the Senate from even taking a vote on the issue.

"The people of the 32nd district have to ask themselves if they really want a Senator who claims to be a moderate, but then takes right-wing stands on the most important issues," continued Decker. "I have a feeling we'll get that answer in November."

The bill, which now moves on to the Governor's desk, guarantee's that medically accurate information is given to rape victims by the doctors who treat them, and ensures that if they ask for emergency contraception, it will be provided.

The race to replace Kapanke will be a top priority for Senate Democrats this election cycle! Stay tuned for more information on how you can help.

Rather than stay tuned, I added Tara Johnson, the Democrat running against Kapanke, to my Wisconsin Act Blue list, for those who want to donate to defeat this right wing fanatic.

This spring's election will include three city council seats and the mayor's seat, with two incumbents on the council running for reelection. In 2006, farm team member Lena Saradnik picked up this seat for the Democrats when an ultraconservative Republican emerged from the primary. Three Republicans have filed to run at this time; two are far right-wingers and one is positioning himself as a moderate.

Marquisha is currently serving her third term on the City of Maricopa Planning and Zoning Commission. She volunteers at local charity events and city sponsored activities and is currently employed by the City of Mesa as a City Council Assistant to its council. Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Buildings, Pacific Grove, CA
2008 ACEEE Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Buildings
    "Scaling Up: Building Tomorrow's Solutions"

August 17–22, 2008 • Asilomar Conference Center • Pacific Grove, California

    Conference Co-Chairs:

Michael Baechler, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
Rich Brown, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

The 2008 ACEEE Summer Study is the 14th biennial ACEEE conference on Energy Efficiency in Buildings and will be held August 17–22, 2008. A diverse group of energy efficiency professionals from around the world will gather at this pre-eminent meeting to discuss the technological basis for, and practical implementation of, reducing energy use in buildings. Presentations and discussions will relate to the theme, "Scaling Up: Building Tomorrow's Solutions." What started out at the Summer Study nearly three decades ago as a fringe activity is now mainstream: energy efficiency in buildings. Energy efficiency now represents our best hope to avoid the worst consequences of global warming and energy resource depletion. But to achieve this potential, the energy efficiency "engine" has to be greatly expanded. New programs, technologies, and financing sources need to be developed. A new generation of energy efficiency practitioners, researchers, and policymakers needs to be trained and deployed to solve the problems we face. Do you have ideas about how to make this happen? Come share your ideas and engage in dialogue about these issues at the 2008 Summer Study. Exchange ideas with some of the leading thinkers, visionaries, and luminaries in the field while experiencing the magnificent natural setting that is Asilomar.

The Early Bird Registration Fee for the full conference is $720; the Regular Registration Fee is $820 (both fees include a set of conference proceedings). The one-day fee is $350. All speakers must pay the registration fee.

The conference will be conducted in a casual atmosphere conducive to developing working relationships. Dress is also casual; jeans and shorts are appropriate attire.

WEEKLY PEACE VIGIL IN HUNTINGTON BEACH: Every Sunday, 7 PM

It's hard for most people to imagine a world at peace. We are a very small group of people who believe that this is indeed possible and that peace will happen once enough people believe that it can. So we stand at the pier every Sunday night with a sign that says: "Visualize World Peace. It's up to you". We also believe in non-violence both physically and in our thoughts. We will discuss peace and non-violence with anyone who is rational and smile quietly at those who aren't. We hold this vigil in a spirit of dignity and respect for all as we try to build bridges with those who don't share our philosophy.

Please bring a candle or just help us hold up our banner (no signs please; we have our banner!)
