    Progressive Democrat Issue 151

Well as the Bush economy spirals into its second recession (did anyone really notice a "recovery?") and prices continue to spiral upwards (does that make this "stagflation" time again?), we can now consider our nation mired in no fewer than three quagmires: Iraq, Afghanistan and the Bush economy.

Afghanistan was a justified war that was abandoned by Bush before it could be brought to an effective conclusion. Instead we are learning why the Soviets gave up as the Islamic fundamentalists we were supposed to be fighting recover not only in Afghanistan, but in Pakistan as well. We seem to be LOSING ground in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Iraq was a mess from the start. And, as I discuss in this issue, Bush systematically lied to get us into the war. That's nothing new...but now we have a detailed analysis telling us just how many times Bush, Chene, Colin Powell, etc. deliberately lied to get us into this quagmire.

And the economy...after so many years of the Clinton economy which was so good economists marvelled at it, we have the Bush economy that just keeps sinking. Even the "recovery" saw higher and higher prices but a net loss of jobs. And now we have the SECOND recession of Bush's administration. Add his father's recession and the Bush family has presided over three recessions.

On the bright side, the voter backlash against these Republican quagmires continues. And Republicans all over the nation see the writing on the wall. Across the country, Republicans are deciding to retire rather than face the voters in 2008. This means that 2008 looks like it is likely to be as successful for the Democrats as 2006 was.

But here I want to break tradition a bit. From the start (even before it was a blog) I have avoided endorsing candidates in primaries, considering this a newsletter for all Democrats. But this newsletter is also for progressives. And now that the Democrats are on the rise, we have to also focus on making sure the Democrats we elect really do reflect the interests of the voters on issues like impeachment, the Iraq quagmire, etc. Living in Brooklyn I am particularly aware of how bad Democrats can be (you can read about some of our problems here).

I have decided that sometimes I will focus on primaries, particularly since I now have many friends running for office. I am open to also including (with an editorial note, of course) guest articles on candidates I don't endorse, but if we don't hold our own candidates to the same, or really much higher, standards than we hold Republicans, then we are not being honest. So...I do want to draw people's attention to such excellent candidates as:

Mark Pera, running for Congress in IL-3 against a pro-war, anti-choice, anti-stem cell Democrat. Here is a video from Mark's campaign:

My friend Steve Harrison, running for Congress in NY-13 first against a machine Democrat who is willing to support permanent bases in Iraq, then against a Bush Republican. Here is a video from Steve's 2006 run for Congress that proved to the DCCC that this district can be competitive:

Dan Seals, running in IL-10 against a machine Democrat and then a Bush Republican. Here's an intro video of Dan:

Norman Siegel, former head of the NY Civil Liberties Union, running for NYC Public Advocate in 2009.

And here is a picture of my son and me campaigning for Norm in 2005:

    More to come...

Yes...they really DID lie to get us into a war

It is now official. According to a study done by the Center for Public Integrity, the Bush adminsitration, including Bush himself, Colin Powell, Cheney and many of Bush's top advisors, made over 930 demonstrably false statements in the lead up to the invasion of Iraq.

I knew when they were justifying the invasion that it was a pack of lies. Too many statements just didn't make sense, like trying to connect al-Qaeda (fanatical Sunni), Iraq (secular), and Iran (Shi'a who hate both al-Qaeda and Iraq). Or their claims that Iraq was developing sophisticated weapons when the first Iraq War and the UN blockade had basically eliminated the Iraqi airforce and famed tank corps. Nothing they were telling us made sense to me. Well, that was because they really were lies.

    From the survey:

President George W. Bush and seven of his administration's top officials, including Vice President Dick Cheney, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, made at least 935 false statements in the two years following September 11, 2001, about the national security threat posed by Saddam Hussein's Iraq. Nearly five years after the U.S. invasion of Iraq, an exhaustive examination of the record shows that the statements were part of an orchestrated campaign that effectively galvanized public opinion and, in the process, led the nation to war under decidedly false pretenses.

On at least 532 separate occasions (in speeches, briefings, interviews, testimony, and the like), Bush and these three key officials, along with Secretary of State Colin Powell, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, and White House press secretaries Ari Fleischer and Scott McClellan, stated unequivocally that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction (or was trying to produce or obtain them), links to Al Qaeda, or both. This concerted effort was the underpinning of the Bush administration's case for war.

Here is the graph: (click to enlarge)

And here are a few highlights from the report:

    * On August 26, 2002, in an address to the national convention of the Veteran of Foreign Wars, Cheney flatly declared: "Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction. There is no doubt he is amassing them to use against our friends, against our allies, and against us." In fact, former CIA Director George Tenet later recalled, Cheney's assertions went well beyond his agency's assessments at the time. Another CIA official, referring to the same speech, told journalist Ron Suskind, "Our reaction was, 'Where is he getting this stuff from?' "

    * In the closing days of September 2002, with a congressional vote fast approaching on authorizing the use of military force in Iraq, Bush told the nation in his weekly radio address: "The Iraqi regime possesses biological and chemical weapons, is rebuilding the facilities to make more and, according to the British government, could launch a biological or chemical attack in as little as 45 minutes after the order is given. . . . This regime is seeking a nuclear bomb, and with fissile material could build one within a year." A few days later, similar findings were also included in a much-hurried National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction — an analysis that hadn't been done in years, as the intelligence community had deemed it unnecessary and the White House hadn't requested it.

    * In July 2002, Rumsfeld had a one-word answer for reporters who asked whether Iraq had relationships with Al Qaeda terrorists: "Sure." In fact, an assessment issued that same month by the Defense Intelligence Agency (and confirmed weeks later by CIA Director Tenet) found an absence of "compelling evidence demonstrating direct cooperation between the government of Iraq and Al Qaeda." What's more, an earlier DIA assessment said that "the nature of the regime's relationship with Al Qaeda is unclear."

    * On May 29, 2003, in an interview with Polish TV, President Bush declared: "We found the weapons of mass destruction. We found biological laboratories." But as journalist Bob Woodward reported in State of Denial, days earlier a team of civilian experts dispatched to examine the two mobile labs found in Iraq had concluded in a field report that the labs were not for biological weapons. The team's final report, completed the following month, concluded that the labs had probably been used to manufacture hydrogen for weather balloons.

    * On January 28, 2003, in his annual State of the Union address, Bush asserted: "The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa. Our intelligence sources tell us that he has attempted to purchase high-strength aluminum tubes suitable for nuclear weapons production." Two weeks earlier, an analyst with the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research sent an email to colleagues in the intelligence community laying out why he believed the uranium-purchase agreement "probably is a hoax."

    * On February 5, 2003, in an address to the United Nations Security Council, Powell said: "What we're giving you are facts and conclusions based on solid intelligence. I will cite some examples, and these are from human sources." As it turned out, however, two of the main human sources to which Powell referred had provided false information. One was an Iraqi con artist, code-named "Curveball," whom American intelligence officials were dubious about and in fact had never even spoken to. The other was an Al Qaeda detainee, Ibn al-Sheikh al-Libi, who had reportedly been sent to Eqypt by the CIA and tortured and who later recanted the information he had provided. Libi told the CIA in January 2004 that he had "decided he would fabricate any information interrogators wanted in order to gain better treatment and avoid being handed over to [a foreign government]."

The conclusion is clear. They lied, blatantly and deliberately, to get us into a war that was NOT in our best interest, was NOT justified and which has turned into the greatest foreign policy and military blunder since the Vietnam war. THAT is the Bush legacy.

Downfall of Another Corrupt Republican: Missouri's Matt Blunt

Among the very first corrupt Republicans I targeted were Roy and Matt Blunt, corrupt father and son who were, respectively, Congressmann and Governor of Missouri. This pair were about as corrupt as you can get, and Matt Blunt was among the least popular governors in the nation. To me, the most embarassing political dynasty this nation has is, perhaps next to the Bush family, the Blunts. Yet, to my dismay, this corrupt and seemingly unpopular bunch hung on to their elected positions.

Well, it seems we are finally starting to force these sleaze out. According to Daily Kos, Matt Blunt, the younger sleaze, is deciding NOT to run for re-election as governor of Missouri.

Given that Matt "Coverup" Blunt was already paying for TV ads for re-election, this sudden withdrawal suggests either he realized he had no chance in hell of winning, or thre is some real major relevation coming up regarding the corrupt Blunts. Meaning Jay Nixon will likely be the next Governor of Missouri. Which will be a HUGE improvement for the people of Missouri! Could the sudden withdrawal have something to do with the $89,300.08 Matt Blunt has recently spent on "legal fees"? Does this mean the many scandals are about to spiral completelt out of control?

So...how will this affect Roy Blunt's chances of re-election to Congress. Will Missouri finally rid itself of this sleazy family altogether? For those who want to help these corrupt sleze get the boot, you can donate to my Missouri Act Blue Site, targeting the MO-07 race in particular to get Papa Sleaze Blunt out as well.

Weeding out corruption is among the most important things we can do in America. In 2006 we did a great deal to weed out corrupt governors and Congressional reps. In 2007 the corrupt Kentucky governor got the boot. So far Missouri has been immune to this clean government movement. My feeling is that Matt Blunt's retreat is the first sign that Missouri will not kick out its corrupt Republicans, starting with the Blunt family. I for one will be proud of Missouri once the Blunts are in disgrace.

ELECTING PROGRESSIVES: Mark Pera, IL-03 Primary

Mark Pera is a progressive Democrat running for Congress against a corporate Democrat who is anti-choice, anti-stem cell research and pro-Iraq war. Here is a video of Mark Pera speaking about Healthcare:

Those of us who don't just blindly follow Democratic Party line, but rather push a more progressive agenda, Mike Pera's Feb. 5th primary election is a critical one. Mark is supported by Daily Kos, Democracy for America, Citizens Action/Illinois, Planned Parenthood Action Fund and NARAL/Pro-Choices America. If ending the Iraq war, quality and affordable healthcare for all Americans, choice and stem cell research are your issues, this primary is just as important as any race against a Republican. Mark is also featured in my Primaries Act Blue page, which is designed to highlight progressive Democrats who are involved in primaries against machine or conservative Democrats as well as, in some cases, challenging Republicans.

WEEKLY PEACE VIGIL IN HUNTINGTON BEACH: Every Sunday, 7 PM

It's hard for most people to imagine a world at peace. We are a very small group of people who believe that this is indeed possible and that peace will happen once enough people believe that it can. So we stand at the pier every Sunday night with a sign that says: "Visualize World Peace. It's up to you". We also believe in non-violence both physically and in our thoughts. We will discuss peace and non-violence with anyone who is rational and smile quietly at those who aren't. We hold this vigil in a spirit of dignity and respect for all as we try to build bridges with those who don't share our philosophy.

Please bring a candle or just help us hold up our banner (no signs please; we have our banner!)

NYC FOCUS: Important Actions, Groups and Events

For my Brooklyn readers, some 2009 City Council Races are heating up. You can read my take on two such races here.

For those interested in Voting Machine issues, we just got a great victory in NY State. You can read about it here.

For those who missed it, Norman Siegel (candidate for Public Advocate and former head of the New York Civil Liberties Union) has teamed up with the Harlem Community organization, VOTE People, to oppose the worst of the city's rezoning of Harlem to benefit wealthy developers.

Now to repeat an important action alert from last week:

NYC Wants to Limit Your Right to Test for Hazardous Materials

On 9/11, a massive, toxic smoke plume flooded over a large part of the city. This toxic plume contaminated the lungs of tens of thousands of citizens, including some 9000 first responders from all over the country who came to help NYC.

The EPA tested and KNEW the WTC smoke plume was toxic. Bush and Giuliani ordered them to lie...yes LIE (a term I use and tonight David Yassky used) about the toxicity of the smoke. The rescue workers were told by the EPA that they did not need respirators even though the EPA had clear evidence that the smoke was toxic. By contrast, no one was allowed near the Pentagon without respirators 24 hours after the attacks. It took two months before respirators were issued at the WTC site.

This is but one example of how government testing for hazards is not sufficient. Many, many other examples can be cited. Erin Brockovich might have something to say about official stories about the toxicity of our homes, our drinking water, our environment. Go back further and Rachel Carson might have something to say about the official story about the safety of the communities we live in.

Now, average citizens like you and me have a chance to test our own water, air, soil. We can check to see whether our environment, our homes, are safe.

NYC doesn't like that. A proposal to the City Council, Intro 650, wants to require permits for private citizens to use atmospheric, biological, chemical and radiological detectors. My wife, the climatologist's, first reaction was "what...do I have to have a permit to use my atmospheric thermometer?!" My reaction was, do we need a permit to have a Geiger-Muller counter in a lab?

But my second reaction was "what about the 9/11 smoke plume?"

Private citizens should have the full right to test their personal space for whatever toxins they are concerned about. The government, which has at times either been squirrely about, or, as the case with Bush and Giuliani and 9/11, outright LIED aboout risks to our health, is our first defense against toxic exposure, but cannot be trusted to be our ONLY defense. Private citizens should freely be able to test their own environment.

NYC wants to require permits for private citizens to purchase testing devices for detecting atmospheric, biological, chemical or radiological hazards. The government would have to issue a permit (at a fee, I am sure!) for you to have the right to test the air, water or soil that you and your children are exposed to. To get a permit, you would have to go to the very government that has at times misled or outright lied about the safety of our environment. That is just not right.

This issue was first brought to my attention by a reader, but it came up again as my City Councilman, David Yassky, was discussing a legislative agenda at a local Democratic club. Yassky described the process to date of the proposal. The NYPD came to the City Council to propose this measure and did a good job of convincing the City Council taht it was necessary to prevent so-called "false alarms" interfering with police business. The police had gone a long way to convincing the City Council. But Yassky attributes a change to Scott Stringer. Stringer (along with the United Federation of Teachers and faculty members of Hunter College Scool of Heath Sciences) basically pointed out that this proposal was insane. It takes away the right of private citizens to ensure the safety of their own living, schooling and working situations at will. It would give the sole right of determining who can test our environment for hazards to the government, who would either do it themselves or would give permits to private citizens to do it themselves.

We know that there are toxic sites in the city, some connected with 9/11, some connected to sites developers want to build on. We also know that some development in the city has little in the way of environmental impact research behind it. If private citizens can gather their own data and challenge the city (and its developer supporters!), then there might be some developer projects that have problems.

But fundamentally this proposal limits OUR ability to test the safety of our personal, and our family, environment. When David Yasky was asked about it, he called the proposal crazy and credited Scott Stringer with revealing the problems with it. I agree...it is crazy and it seems obvious from the first reading that it is crazy. Private citizens should have an unrestricted right to test the safety of their environment. The kits available for such tests should be subject to regulation in that they should be tested for reliability. But ANYONE should be able to use a reliable kit for testing the safety of their personal space.

Write your city council member and the mayor and tell them that you OPPOSE Intro 650 and support the right of an individual to test their personal environment for hazards.

And now for the Groups and Events section:

A House Party for Josh Skaller, a Progressive Voice for City Council

    Host: Wayne Brooks
    Location: Wayne's apartment
262 Court Street #2/Butler Street, Brooklyn, NY 11231 US
    When: Sunday, January 27, 3:00PM
    Phone: 347-645-0581

    Dear Friends,

I'm having a house party at my apartment for my good friend Josh Skaller, who is running for City Council in Brooklyn's 39th District in 2009.

Josh is running for what will be an open seat now held by Bill de Blasio. The district covers much of Park Slope, Cobble Hill, and Carroll Gardens, along with parts of Windsor Terrace and Kensington.

Josh is President of Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats (CBID), one of the most dynamic and influential political reform groups in New York. He also serves as a board member and field director for DFNYC (Democracy for New York City).

He is employed as director of Information Technology and Information Systems at Globalworks, where he also manages the emerging technologies department. A lifelong activist, Josh lives in Park Slope with his wife Kelly and their son, Wolf.

Josh Skaller is the kind of Councilmember we need - smart, progressive, energetic, personable and gutsy. He is especially passionate about preventing the destruction of our neighborhoods by predatory developers and opposing the Brooklyn Democratic machine's control over judicial appointments and court patronage.

And Josh can win this race! If you're like me, and I think you are, you're ready to support a candidate who can actually get elected.

Of course I'm trying to raise some money for his campaign. There is a suggested donation of $100, but every contribution, regardless of amount, will be greatly appreciated. And of course feel free to give more if you can. Checks should be made out to "Friends of Josh Skaller."

This is my first fundraiser in a long time, and the first in my newly-renovated apartment. I hope you can attend. There will be plenty of food and drinks. The party will run from 3:00 to 6:00 pm. Please try to RSVP before Friday, January 25.

If you haven't met Josh yet, well...you're going to love him. So please come.

NORTH CAROLINA FOCUS: Blackwater VP Threatens NC-3 Dem Candidate

The storey of Blackwater War Profiteers continues its disgusting trajectory. A Daily Kos diary covers the history of the Blackwater War Profiteers. But I want to continue to focus on an attempt by these war profiteers to affect elections. This is repeated from last week because it is so important. A bunch of corrupt, violent war profiteers are threatening a Democratic candidate because he opposes corrupt, violent war profiteers. Well, my support goes to the guy who opposes the corrupt, violent war profiteers, and I am willing to put some money where my mouth is. If three people donate to anyone on my North Carolina Act Blue Page I will make another donation to oppose Blackwater.

    This comes from Daily Kos:

Things are heating up here in North Carolina, folks. And we need your help. An Executive Vice President at Blackwater USA has threatened Mr. Marshall Adame, the Democratic challenger to Walter "Freedom-Fries" Jones in NC-3. We need to get Mr. Adame's back.

The email below was posted today at the Raleigh News and Observer's Blackwater Blog. It is an email from one of the @$$holes who works for Erik Prince in the war-profiteering business:

    All:

There is a man named Marshall Adame who is running for congress (sic) in our district. He just put a quote online which says he wants this company and all of us to cease to exist.

Do you like your jobs? Are you sick and tired of the slanderous bullshit going on in DC? If so, would you all mind joining me in reminding Mr. Adame that he is running for office in our backyard. Tell all your friends and family too. We welcome their assistance in making this point very clear to Mr. Adame.

Anyone who wants to send a letter may do so at the following address.....

    MARSHALL ADAME FOR CONGRESS
    PMB #161
    1250 WESTERN BLVD. #L2
    JACKSONVILLE, NC 28546

    His email is info@marshalladame4congress2008.com

He was too cowardly to put a phone number on the web. I ask that you keep your comments to Mr. Adame professional (well, mostly professional). We help him if our comments get threatening or too crass. Let’s run this goof out of Dodge....!

    Bill Mathews
    Executive Vice President
    Blackwater Worldwide
    850 Puddin Ridge Road
    Moyock, NC 27958

With people like Bill Mathews running the Blackwater circus, it's no wonder the company lurches from one fuck-up to another every day in Iraq.

It's time to put these people out of business, and Mathews has just given us an opening.

    *****************

And what did Marshall Adame say to generate such hate? He simply told the truth. (Marshall is a retired Marine, by the way.)

I have interacted with many mercenary groups, including Blackwater. There is no place in the American force structure, or in American culture for mercenaries. They are guns for hire; No more, no less. The primary motivation is money. In most cases it does not matter who's money. Private Security Organizations as extensive as Blackwater, for example, should not be allowed to operate in war zones as augments of the United States of America. Private Armies represent the very things we depise as a people. Servants to the highest bidder with true allegiance to no-one.

    ****************

Blackwater USA has recently retained the services of North Carolina law firm, Womble Carlyle Sandridge Rice to help them lobby for more government contracts.

Note to Womble Carlyle: Nice client you have there. You might want to recommend that Mathews get down on his knees and apologize to an honorable man for exercising such piss-poor judgment.

    To contact Blackwater: media@blackwaterusa.com

To contact their new legal mouthpiece: Go here.

You can follow this link for the background on the lobbying contract.

You can show your support for Marshall Adame by donating to his campaign here. Give a little bit to show Blackwater you are sick of bullies.
