Progressive Democrat Issue 101: A SIX-POINT PLAN TO RESTORE AMERICA

In a previous issue I wrote about a talk I heard in November by Hank Sheinkopf, a political consultant, formerly a member of President Clinton’s re-election media team, and a panelist on a local TV station's roundtable discussion. Sheinkopf is the ultimate Democratic insider and he came to discuss the 2006 election victory with us.

The core of his talk was that Democrats need to focus on just one message, and it was the message that ALWAYS works for Democrats since the 1920's: economic populism. Actually, I would use the term "progressivism" because that is how Theodore Roosevelt described it when it was Republicans who were the economic populists. But economic populism is a good term for it as well.

It's STILL the economy, stupid! That's the message.

Sheinkopf argues that it is the blue-collar vote that determines national elections. He narrowed it down to 500,000 white, male Catholics...but I suspect that you could use other groups as the key demographic as well. This group is often socially conservative, but when faced with bread and butter issues, they vote for economic populism. They will only buy into the wedge issues Republicans run on if they don't see the Democrats offering them economic populism. He suggests that the key to Democratic victory in 2008 lies in only four states: Michigan, Missouri, Ohio and Pennsylvania. I would broaden this list considerably and I still support Dean's 50-state strategy because it has been working well in getting state legistatures and House Reps. for the Democrats, but these four states are unquestionably important and we can focus on issues that would play well in these four states AS WELL AS many other states.

Not too long ago I wrote my own suggested national plan for Congressional Democrats. I want to revisit some of this specifically with Sheinkopf's comments in mind, because it seems to me that we really are on the cusp of some very good policy shifts that would be extremely popular among blue-collar Americans and would help the American economy considerably. The following should be the centerpiece of the Congressional agenda and with your help, we can get them to do it. Doing so will help ensure victory in 2008.

DEMOCRATIC ECONOMIC POLICY SUGGESTIONS:

1. First and formost, raise the minimum wage. The minimum wage has been stuck at $5.15 an hour since 1997...it hasn't even kept up with inflation. That means working Americans at the bottom of the pay scale are slipping further and further behind even as corporate profits of companies like Exxon/Mobil are reaching an all time high. We MUST help working Americans by raising the minimum wage.

2. Restore America's Infrastructure: Republicans have neglected our roads, our levees, our wetlands, all the things that keep American cities safe and the American economy moving. It is time to restore America: restore our wetlands and levees to protect our cities from disasters like Katrina. Restore our roads and railroads to keep our economy moving. And restoration of infrastructure also provides good, solid union jobs for working class Americans.

3. Education: good education correlates well with better income, reduced crime and reduced drug use. Many studies have shown that increased funding for education SAVES MONEY IN THE LONG RUN because government later spends less on dealing with the problems of drugs, crime and unemployment. More money for education. Increased testing is fine, but ONLY if schools are given the monetary resources to deal with deficiencies that are discovered by testing. Bush has FAILED as the Education President. It is time for the Education Congress.

4. Fair Taxes: Under Bush's tax breaks the top 1% got an unfair advantage over the vast majority of working Americans. And many giant corporations making record profits evade taxes altogether. It is time for the tax burden to be shifted off of lower and middle class Americans and time for giant corporations and America's richest to pay their fair share.

5. Energy Independence Part I: Restoration of America's manufiacturing From Michigan to Pennsylvania, our industrial heartland has been hurting for years. We need to find NEW solutions to restore our manufacturing heartland. The government should help retool the closed factories of Detroit, Flint, Pittsburg and all our blue-collar cities to produce new technology. Wind power, solar power, hydroelectric power, geothermal power...all of these require America to build the machinery to produce these new sources of energy. This is a way to jump start BOTH energy independence and a revival of America's industry. Why is Denmark the nation that provides the world with much of its wind power machinery? America has an opportunity here to provide blue-collar jobs throughout America providing America and the world with the machinery for clean, efficient and local energy production.

6. Energy Independence Part II: Local Energy means Local Jobs and Cleaner Air Our oil and coal based energy economy means energy resources must come from abroad or from across the nation. I recently wrote about a controversy in Nevada where a company wants to build a polluting coal powered plant, bringing coal across the country to burn in Nevada to fuel California while locals want to build cleaner power plants that use LOCAL resources like geothermal and wind. Local energy means local jobs and cleaner air. Geothermal and wind and hydroelectric are CURRENT technologies we can RELY on now to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, reduce pollution and create local jobs ALL OVER THE NATION. Wind power and biofuels production are already benefitting farmers in Iowa, for example. The Great Plains states represent one of the world's best wind power producing areas, something that would benefit states whose economies really need help. Together with my suggestion #5, we could create a huge number of much needed American jobs right now, reduce our massive trade deficit by reducing our need to import oil, and clean up our air in the process.

Please write your local media, and your Congress Critters to urge them to take this 6 point plan to restore America's economy. We could be the start of a real revival of not only the Democratic Party, but the American economy as well.

Progressive Democrat Issue 101: SCIENTIFIC FRAUD BY BUSH ADMINISTRATION

I have written extensively about the ongoing anti-science policies of the Republican Party. Well, the latest anti-science activity, in fact outright scientific fraud, is happening at the Fish and Wildlife Service.

This comes from the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS):

Recently obtained documents demonstrate that Deputy Assistant Secretary Julie MacDonald and other high-ranking political appointees within the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) at the Department of the Interior have systematically distorted, manipulated, and misused the scientific process prescribed by the Endangered Species Act. In several notable cases, this interference resulted in changing a "positive" finding--in favor of protecting species under the Endangered Species Act--to a "negative" finding. In making these changes, MacDonald, whose training is in engineering, overrode the recommendations of the agency’s own biologists.

These examples of the manipulation and distortion of scientific information at the Interior Department are the tip of the iceberg. A Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) survey of scientists at the FWS, released in February 2005, demonstrated pervasive political interference in science at the agency. Unfortunately, the significant editing of scientific documents described below shows that the misuse of science at the FWS has continued.

There is far more detail at the UCS website, linked to above, including a list of species which are affected.

Why do Republicans reject science? Isn't a rejection of reality defined as insanity? Facts are facts. Rewriting facts is outright lying. It is time for this to stop.

Please write a letter to the editor rejecting Republican fraud at the Interior Department. Also write your Congress Critters asking them to investigate scientific fraud at the Interior Department.

Progressive Democrat Issue 101: HALLIBURTON CORRUPTION: finally a conviction!

This didn't even get it's own article in the NY Times but rather was buried at the bottom of an article on 4 marines dying in a helicopter crash. Really, you have to scroll down almost to the end to find it. It turns out that Halliburton has been awarding subcontracts based on bribes:

In Rock Island, Ill., the director of operations for a Saudi company that operates dining facilities for American troops in Iraq and Kuwait was sentenced Friday in the Federal District Court for the Central District of Illinois to 51 months in prison for his involvement in a kickback scheme, according to a news release issued by a federal prosecutor’s office there.

In the scheme, Mohammad Shabbir Khan, operations director of the Tamimi Global Company, paid kickbacks to an employee of Kellogg Brown & Root Services to secure two dining subcontracts valued at $21.8 million, the statement said.

A United States district judge also ordered Mr. Khan to pay a fine of $10,000 and restitution to the United States government of $133,860, the amount he paid the Kellogg Brown & Root employee, the statement said.

The judge also sentenced the former Kellogg Brown & Root employee, Stephen Lowell Seamans, to 12 months in prison for his role in the scheme, the statement said.

Mr. Seamans was also ordered to pay restitution of $380,130 for that and another kickback scheme, according to the statement.

Kellogg Brown & Root is a subsidiary of Halliburton. So Tamimi Global got its subcontract by BRIBING an employee of a Halliburton subsidiary.

But this is only the tip of the iceburg. Halliburton Watch covers the corruption of Cheney's favorite company in some detail, including showing graphs of Halliburton profits compared with American soldiers killed in Iraq. Has there ever been a more disgusting example of war profiteering?

Progressive Democrat Issue 101: NY STATE FOCUS

I have written about corruption among the NY State Congressional Republicans. But NY State Republicans seem more and more rotten to the core. Seems that NY State Senate Republican Leader, Joe Bruno, one of the infamous "three men in a room" of NY State politics, is under investigation by the FBI. From Salon.com:

The majority leader of the New York state Senate announced that the FBI is investigating him and his private consulting business.

Joseph Bruno, who will be the state's top Republican in January, said Tuesday he was told by the FBI in late spring that he was being investigated. The 77-year-old lawmaker said he doesn't know exactly what investigators are looking for, but he has cooperated...

Bruno, who became majority leader in 1994, said he decided to make the announcement after learning news of the investigation had been leaked to reporters.

"I wanted to be up front and assure that I have nothing to hide and avoid speculation, unfounded rumors, and distortions," said Bruno...

Notice that he only wanted to be up front AFTER the news got leaked to reporters. In other words, he only likes being up front when he absolutely has no option to keep it hidden. There's more:

Bruno is listed as a consultant to Capital Business Consultants LLC, according to his legislative ethics filing. He said the company provides marketing, business strategy and business development.

"My interests outside the Legislature have all been cleared and approved by the Legislative Ethics Committee," Bruno said. "They're going into the background over the last five or six years into the relationships of my business interest."

Details remain sketchy, but Bruno seemed nervous at the press conference where he announced it. And it seems very likely that the investigation will have something to do with Bruno's VERY close ties with his crony, Jared E. Abbruzzese. Of course Democrats in NY State have their own ethical problems, as I have outlined before. Clarence Norman (in jail) and Alan Hevesi (under investigation) are both examples of Democrats under a cloud. Of course Clarence Norman was indicted and jailed by a Democratic DA and many Democrats are calling for Hevesi to resign. Will we be hearing Republicans calling for the resignation or indictment of their own corrupt members? So far they haven't! So far, across the nation, the Republican Party defends its most corrupt members. Pity Republicans are so much more tolerant of corruption even than Democrats.

Progressive Democrat Issue 101: NYC GROUPS AND EVENTS

Local involvement is really what wins elections. Please get involved. I have made friends, met many of my elected officials who now (sometimes!) actually listen to me, and have really felt like I am making a difference. From time to time I will also post events going on, but mostly this is a list of organizations in your area. If I have missed any, please let me know.

BROOKLYN GROUPS AND EVENTS:

Brooklyn Critical Mass:
Critical Mass is a monthly celebration of bicycles and other nonpolluting means of transportation, exercising our right to the road. Critical Mass is a movement, not an organization; no two riders participate for exactly the same reason. Brooklyn Critical Mass started rolling in 2004.

Brooklyn rides are the Second Friday of every month, 7:00 p.m., meeting at Grand Army Plaza. Come out and join Critical Mass in Brooklyn. Celebrate cycling, and assert your right to the road -- Brooklyn style!

Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats (CBID) (mostly covers Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, and Kensington). http://www.cbidems.org/ My wife, Joy, is now on the executive board of this club. This club is very grassroots and worked very hard for progressive candidates in the recent primary. They need more people if we want to strengthen the grassroots. If you are not yet a member, please come to the next meeting and join. Membership is cheap! Meetings are usually held on the third Thursday of every month at 7 PM at the Park Slope United Methodist Church, 6th Ave. & 8th Street in the basement (enter through the garden gate on 6th Ave).


Independent Neighborhood Democrats (IND): I usually work with this club. They cover the 52nd Assembly district, covering Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill. Meetings are usually held on the third Thursday of every month at 7 PM (yes...same time as CBID above because they are sort of rival groups!) at their clubhouse 489 Court St. in Carroll Gardens.


New Democratic Majority in Brooklyn: Originally an outgrowth of the Dean campaign, NDM is one of the more active progressive organizations around. This is the Brooklyn branch of that organization and we are still building our membership. I will be a co-host of this meeting. We meet the 4th Thursday of every month at the 5th Ave. Ozzie’s in Park Slope, 249 5th Ave (intersection of 5th and Garfield) at 7 PM. You can contact me (mole333@gmail.com) for more info.

Progressive Democrat Issue 101: MIDWEST PROGRESSIVE GROUPS (IA, IN, WI, MI)

I apologize for lumping such diverse states together under "Midwest," but to date I don't have enough readers in any one Midwestern state to give any of them their own attention the way I do with Virginia, NYC and California. Get me more readers in YOUR state and I will happily put more effort into writing about that state. Until then, these are the four Midwestern region states that I get some readership from regularly.

IOWA GROUPS:

WISCONSIN FAIR TRADE COALITION: The Wisconsin Fair Trade Coalition is a statewide collaboration of labor, environmental, consumer, family farm and interfaith groups founded in 1994 during the fight over the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). They are united in a common belief that international trade and investment are not ends unto themselves, but instead must be viewed as a means for achieving other societal goals including economic justice, human rights, healthy communities and a sound environment. The economy exists to help people, not the other way around.

WFTC is the leading state advocacy vehicle to fight for trade policy that is not tilted in favor of multinational corporations and against the interests of Wisconsin ’s -- and the world's -- working people. Drinking Liberally in Wisconsin: Promoting democracy one pint at a time! Drinking liberally is a social organization with chapters nationwide. There are surprisingly few Wisconsin drinking liberally groups! There are currently only two Wisconsin Drinking Liberally groups (see below). If there isn't one near you, you can set one up at the Drinking Liberally website. INDIANA GROUPS:

First, I will highlight the very, VERY important Indiana Progressives PAC. Indiana Progressives believe to win nationally we must first win locally. Their message is positive, practical and progressive! And hopefully will be popular as well! Be a part of Indiana Progressives by registering with their site today. This is exactly the kind of organization we need in Indiana to deliver a populist progressive message right to the voters.


Evolution Education Institute (EEI) is a national professional development program that had it's origins in the Michigan Scientific Evolution Education Initiative (MSEEI). The MSEEI was administered by the Michigan Science Teacher's Association and was funded by an Eisenhower Higher Education Competitive Grant through the Michigan Department of Education (MDOE) from 1999-2002. The mission of the MSEEI was to provide Michigan teachers and pre-service teacher education students with the necessary content, pedagogy and support system to effectively teach scientific evolution. The Evolution Education Institute expands upon the MSEEI model and brings it to a national audience. he mission of the Evolution Education Institute (EEI) is to promote the understanding of evolution and natural selection theory within the educational community and society at-large and to advocate for its inclusion in science curricula in a manner commensurate with its importance to modern scientific thought. This issue is particularly important to me (I'm a biologist myself!). So please, help out EEI.

Progressive Democrat Issue 101: CALIFORNIA GROUPS AND EVENTS

Next to New York, California has become where I have the most readers. So, I need to start focusing a little bit more on California to accomodate all of you! Of course California is pretty big, so mostly what I will do is list the resources you can use to find out what's going on in your area. If you know of a group, send me info!

California for Democracy: This is the California branch of Howard Dean's Democracy for America movement. There are local meetings all over the state (listed on the left hand side of the state website). I participate in my local group and this is one of the ways I get to meet lots of interesting politicians, all of whom are trying to get our support. If you only do one kind of political activism, it should be this! If you join, tell them I sent you...it can't hurt for them to know I'm helping them out! There are also events listed as well as blogs for discussion. This is the ultimate in progressive grassroots! DRINKING LIBERALLY: An informal, inclusive progressive social group. Raise your spirits while you raise your glass, and share ideas while you share a pitcher. Drinking Liberally gives like-minded, left-leaning individuals a place to talk politics. You don't need to be a policy expert and this isn't a book club - just come and learn from peers, trade jokes, vent frustration and hang out in an environment where it's not taboo to talk politics. This is one of the more fun ways to be involved as a liberal. There are MANY groups in California. If there isn't one in your area, get a few friends together and START ONE! Don't drink alcohol? Then start one in a coffee house, tea lounge or juice bar! The format is flexible. Here's a list of them as of Dec. 2006.

LOS ANGELES AREA:

Progressive Los Angeles Network (PLAN): The Progressive Los Angeles Network (PLAN) was formally launched in December 1999. PLAN was founded and built on the success of the 1998 Progressive L.A. Conference which was co-sponsored by a number of local and national institutions and organizations including Occidental College, The Nation Institute, Liberty Hill Foundation, LA Weekly and the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor. The Progressive LA Conference was an overwhelming success and gave participants a sense that the growth of a wide variety of progressive social movements had reached an important threshold. As a result, attendees and others within the progressive movement in Los Angeles expressed a desire to participate in further discussion about how to develop a common agenda that is community based, inclusive and brings together the wealth of experience and knowledge of organizers, activists, and researchers. ORANGE COUNTY AREA:

Orange County Peace Coalition: An organization that advocates the peaceful resolution of international conflicts and that this ideal become a cornerstone of U.S. foreign policy. To see a calendar of events, CLICK HERE. To get involved, CLICK HERE.


NORTHERN CALIFORNIA:

Grassrootswest was founded in 2004 as a way to unite Northbay Democrats, Greens, Independents, and even Republicans in getting George Bush out of office. After the stolen election of 2004 it became clear that there still was a need to bridge the divide between the various progressive organizations in the San Francisco North Bay. So their work of bypassing the corporate media, and building alliances of progressives continues to this day. Check them out.

Democracy for America: One of the best ways to get active! If you only do one thing that is political, join your local DFA group! FIND YOUR LOCAL DFA MEETUP AND GET INVOLVED! The statewide site seems to not be active, but it has MANY great links on the right hand side, including links to some local Virginia DFA groups. And for Washington, DC, your local DFA group can be found here.


Virginia Organizing Project:
The Virginia Organizing Project (VOP) is a statewide grassroots organization dedicated to challenging injustice by empowering people in local communities to address issues that affect the quality of their lives. VOP especially encourages the participation of those who have traditionally had little or no voice in our society. By building relationships with individuals and groups throughout the state, VOP strives to get them to work together, democratically and non-violently, for change. Here's a calendar of events.


Virginia Young Democrats: The next generation of Democrats in Virginia! Their stated goals are:

# To support and elect Democratic candidates for public office
# To widen and increase the interest and knowledge of young people in government and the political process
# To train and develop young people for positions of leadership
# To increase the role of under-represented people in our Party, government, and society
# To serve those in need in our community

Join in or, if you are no longer young enough to be a "Young Democrat," give them a little support.

It is a great way to get started in the political process. Here in NYC we get to meet all sorts of politicians who want our endorsement.
