    Progressive Democrat Issue 90: THOUGHTS

In the Sudan, members of a fundamentalist Islamic movement took control. As that new fundamentalist government tried to consolidate its control, in the south anti-fundamentalist forces, led by a non-Muslim, held out against the wave of Jihadists.

Europe, swept by anti-Muslim sentiments and a sense of their own righteousness and self-importance, sends a multi-national force to relieve the beleaguered holdouts in Southern Sudan. The Jihadists fuel the flames of mutual hatred by demanding that a leading European leader come to the Sudan to submit and convert to Islam.

As the multi-national force was dispatched, it was beset from the beginning by poor management and greed. The very route they took to reach the Sudan was determined not by military strategy, but by the desire for certain vested interests to profit from the military action. Even as private individuals profited, the military expedition proved a disaster. The multi-national force was poorly supplied and took their anger out on the natives, slaughtering innocent lives, turning the natives against them almost immediately. Atrocities were committed by BOTH sides, making both side's claims to moral superiority a farce.

This is not today. This was in the mid-1880's when Mahdist rebels took over in the Sudan, then jointly mismanaged by Egypt and Britain. The southern holdouts were led by the Emin Pasha, who was actually a German Jew, originally named Eduard Schitzer. The European nations sent a relief force, but the greed of people like Belgian and Congolese King Leopold II (who later presided over one of the worst holocausts in history), British merchants hoping to get their greedy hands on ivory, and various newspapers who wanted some good stories, led to the relief effort going through the Belgian Congo (then called the "Congo Free State" but was actually a private domain of King Leopold). Look on a map. This route makes no sense militarily and by the time the relief effort reached the Sudan, half its members had died of disease and starvation and needed to be helped by the Emin Pasha. In the meantime, the Mahdist threat had retreated...until the abuses by the European relief expedition stirred up native anger again, giving the Emin Pasha a new situation to deal with.

The self-righteousness of the Muslim Jihadist fanatics as well as the white "Crusaders" haven't changed much. Nor has the arena of their conflict. Both Afghanistan and the Sudan have been regions of ongoing conflict between fanatics on both sides for centuries. And, I would add, the atrocities on both sides haven't changed. Both sides happily torture and wage war in the name of all that is good and pure against the evil brutality of the other side. And both sides grow to be hated and distrusted by the natives who get the brunt of the fighting.

Things have not changed from the 19th to the 21st century.

Why am I politically active? When I read about things like I describe above, I know why I am active. There is so much that needs changing and so much resistence to change. If we don't work to change things, who will?

Progressive Democrat Issue 90: REPUBLICANS ADMIT THEY HAVE LOST THE WAR ON TERRORISM

For some time I have been writing about the fact that Bush has lost the war on terrorism and has, in fact, pretty much been enabling the rise of a new, extremist Caliphate that aims to control lands from Africa to Pakistan (and hence to have a nuclear capability). Some of my writings even came to the attention of BBC radio some time back.

Well, now even Republican Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist is admitting that the Republicans have lost the war against terrorism. From Salon.com:

Frist: Taliban Should Be in Afghan Gov't

    - - - - - - - - - - - -

By JIM KRANE Associated Press Writer

October 02,2006 | QALAT, Afghanistan -- U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said Monday that the Afghan war against Taliban guerrillas can never be won militarily and called for efforts to bring the Islamic militia and its supporters into the Afghan government.

The Tennessee Republican said he learned from briefings that Taliban fighters were too numerous and had too much popular support to be defeated on the battlefield.

"You need to bring them into a more transparent type of government," Frist said during a brief visit to a U.S. and Romanian military base in the southern Taliban stronghold of Qalat. "And if that's accomplished, we'll be successful."

Afghanistan is suffering its heaviest insurgent attacks since a U.S.-led military force toppled the Taliban in late 2001 for harboring al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

The Taliban and their al-Qaeda allies are stronger than ever. They continue to be supported by the Saudi Wahabi extremists who also support other terrorist regimes like Hamas and Hezbollah...yet who we practically worship because they control the flow of oil. Their allies in the Sudan remain in control, committing genocide right beneath our noses with little action from Bush. And they have recently been joined by a like-minded government of extremists who have taken over in the Sudan.

Meanwhile, America and its allies have become so weak under Bush that Republican Donald Rumsfeld says we are losing the PR war because of inferior technology, George Bush himself admits that we are now in a perpetual quagmire of wars, and Republican Bill Frist now advocates begging the Taliban to help us stabilize Afghanistan.

Pitiful. Absolutely pitiful. Clearly the Republican Party is more interested in protecting sexual predators than in protecting Americans from terrorism.

Progressive Democrat Issue 90: REPUBLICANS TERRIFIED OF MOVEON.org

The Right Wing is scared. I mean they are starting to sound absolutely hysterical.

And what is the main target of their fear these days? It seems to be MoveOn.org, the organization founded in 1998 to call for censure, not impeachment, of Bill Clinton so the nation could "Move On" and get back to business. Now MoveOn.org has more than 3 million members, raised over $9 million from 125,000 donors in 2005 and expects to spend $25 million on candidates and independent ads this year. Already MoveOn.org claims credit for five House races changing from "lean Republican" to "lean Democrat" after they aired targeted ads in those districts. MoveOn sent out an email urging its members to support Pennsylvania Senate candidate Bob Casey in his race against Rick Santorum. Casey raised $150,000 in just 24 hours. And now MoveOn has set up a massive phone banking effort that aims to call 5 million voters before November 7th.

So what is the reaction of the now hysterical Republicans? According to AlterNet the Republicans are resorting to their usual swiftboating lies and smears.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee responded to MoveOn's excellent fundraising efforts for Casey by issuing a "press release" calling Casey (an abortion opponent and moderate Dem) a member of the "ultra-liberal left." John Brabender, Santorum's media consultant, said that if Casey accepts MoveOn money, he "will have a lot of trouble in Pennsylvania, particularly in the middle part of the state." One look at the polls consistently showing Casey ahead of terrified Santorum show that Brabender is full of it.

And, of course, Bill O'Reilly had to get in on it by saying that people giving money to MoveOn's PAC might as well "give to the Nazi party."

Excuse me? Nazi party? I actually have a MoveOn organizer staying at my apartment while she helps set up the phone banks. She is a young, perky black woman who is putting more than 12 hours a day into the phone bank and still manages a smile. THIS is what Republicans are terrified of and Bill O'Reilly compares with Nazism: hardworking, enthusiastic, young, perky grassroots activists.

I must admit I am laughing my ass off watching people like this young black women make Santorum pale with fear and Bill O'Reilly splotchy with impotent rage.

So come on, folks. Get involved with MoveOn.org and do your part to making the Republican party shit their pants. Donate or volunteer because THIS is how we will drive back the un-American Republicans and retake America.

Progressive Democrat Issue 90: REPUBLICAN SLEAZE AT AN ALL TIME HIGH

Well, the latest nasty Republican scandal is Rep. Mark Foley who engaged in a sexual email exchange with an underage teen on his staff...on taxpayer money. The Republican leadership, right up to Hastert, Reynolds and DeLay, KNEW about this months ago and did nothing, allowing a sexual predator to remain a Republican Conrgessman in good standing. The layers of sleaze are deep and disgusting in this scandal. The transcripts of the email exchange are now public and pretty graphic.

Now let's remember that the Republican Party went after Clinton for having consensual sex with a consenting adult on his staff. But they TOLERATE and PROTECT Foley, a man who breaks the lawe by soliciting sex with an UNDERAGE staff member. Where is the moral outrage, Tom Reynolds (NY Republican)? Why did you wait so long, Tom DeLay (TX Republican) while a sexual predator was on the loose? Why did you wait until it became public, Dennis Hastert (Republican Speaker of the House), before you acted? These three men KNEW ABOUT FOLEY'S illegal and immoral acts but DID NOTHING for months. Only once the scandal hit the papers did they scramble to act all shocked. But they weren't shocked. They knew and they did nothing to stop a sexual predator. Their actions are not worthy of Congressmen so much of members of the sleazy NABMLA. Is this what Repubublicans are all about? Displaying the morality of NABMLA?

This once again shows the disgusting hypocricy and immorality of the current Republican Party. Ronald Reagan and Dwight Eisenhaur would be disgusted by Republicans today. But let's not forget that Foley's actions ARE NOT ISOLATED. Soliciting sex illegally via email is becoming a pattern.

Awhile back I covered the story of the extreme right wing, anti-gay Republican mayor of Spokane, WA who was caught soliciting homosexual sex over the internet in exchange for city jobs. The fact that he was publicly anti-gay but privately a practicing homosexual is merely hypocritical. Doing it over the internet when he had something to hide was outright stupid. And to offer city jobs in exchange for homosexual sex is criminal. So, the Republican mayor of Spokane displayed extreme stupidity, criminality and hypocrisy all at once. To their credit, the voters of Spokane ousted him from office the way we should also oust Hastert and Reynolds from office for their tolerance of Foley's disgusting actions. Tom DeLay is already disgraced and ousted by his own corruption.

Then let's not forget the Republican crony who was made the deputy press secretary for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and who was arrested trying to solicit sex from teenage girls over the internet. Yes...the second in command of PR for our nation's Homeland Security was caught doing something immoral, illegal and utterly stupid.

Clinton got a blow job from a consenting adult on his own time. The Republicans stopped the busniness of the nation (including Clinton's attempts to go after bin Laden and al-Qaeda) in their eagerness to hound him from office. But when faced with the much, much worse crimes of offering jobs for sex or soliciting sex with minors, the Republicans are practically silent on the matter. That shows you just how moral they really are.

Progressive Democrat Issue 90: BROOKLYN FOCUS

Join us for a week of events to raise money to preserve Brooklyn.

Develop, Don't Destroy Brooklyn, the organization that opposes Ratner's corrupt over-development plan for Brooklyn in favor of community-based development, is expanding their Walkathon fundraising effort into a week of events.

Last year Joy and I participated in the Walkathon and had a great time. Once again we are participating. Please join or sponsor our team. Proceeds go to the DDDB legal fund which has been about the only thing keeping Ratner at bay and has been the only reason he has compromised even the tiny bit he has so far.

Develop Don't Destroy Brooklyn is pleased to announce WALKATHON WEEK -- six days of events celebrating our community, culminating with the walkathon on Saturday, Oct 21. Following is the schedule, still in formation, with more events to be announced.

Monday Night Oct. 16th is Comedy Night: where better for laughter to win the day than at Freddy's Backroom, standing in the way of Ratner's skyscrapers. Hosted by comedic genius Pat O'Shea. (Tentative)

Monday Night Oct. 16th is also Music Night: Soda Bar hosts our tentatively scheduled acoustic bands program, featuring local stars playing bluegrass, folk and blues.

Tuesday Night Oct. 17th is Literary Night: several of Brooklyn's best writers will read at Tilly's (Ft. Greene) and Shakespeare's Sister (Cobble Hill) for the cause.

Wednesday Night Oct. 18th is Movie Night: stop by Soda Bar for Everyday People (tentative), Nelson George and Jim McKay's provocative film about a small Brooklyn business fighting for its life against overdevelopment.

Thursday Night Oct. 19th is Restaurant Night: visit local restaurants who are donating a portion of their proceeds to Develop Don't Destroy's legal fund. Participating restaurants include Night of the Cookers, Chez Oskar, Olea, Mediterranean Tavern, Maggie Brown, Pequena, Bogata, Latin Bistro, Bacchus and others.

Friday Night Oct. 20th is Update Night: stop by this community meeting to get the latest on our battle for better development in Brooklyn. Venue to be announced.

And Saturday Oct. 21st is the WALKATHON, filled with children's activities, marching bands, booths with local businesses and a post-walk concert featuring John Wesley Harding and other special guests at the Prospect Park Bandshell.

Sign in at noon; walk is from 1 - 2:30pm, with a concert to follow

Celebrate our communities and raise funds with your fellow walkers!

Progressive Democrat Issue 90: NYC ACTION, ALL BOROUGHS

I have written fairly often about the one major Congressional race in NYC: the NY-13 race where Steve Harrison is running against Vito Fossella in Bay Ridge and Staten Island. But for many New Yorkers Westchester is just as close as Staten Island, and there is another important Congressional race just to the north of NYC. In the NY-19 race John Hall is running to defeat Sue Kelly.

Both of these races are much closer than people realize based on internal polls, but the Republican candidates have more money. It's the ususal story: Republicans with money against Democrats with heart and lots of volunteers.

I have met Steve Harrison and can vouch for his quality as a sound candidate. He is a moderate Democrat, not as progressive as myself, but so is his district. He is a great match for his district and has an excellent knack for talking with people. Fossella is tainted with the Abramoff and Foley scandals and this, as well as his waffling on Social Security and his previous close ties with Bush, Cheney and Rove, have soured the district on him. If Harrison can reach out enough, he has a shot at winning. Recent fundraisers as well as institutional support from the DCCC should boost his chances. And an informal internal poll indicated a very close race. But when you are being out-raised by the Republicans, you need people on the ground. If you are a New Yorker living closer to Staten Island or Bay Ridge than to Westchester, please contact Steve Harrison's campaign and give them a few hours of your time. By the way, Fossella is doing his damnedest to seem like he isn't a Republican. He doesn't admit it on his website and he stands under signs that say "Independent." But he has brough Cheney and Rove to NYC for fundraisers, has taken money from Abramoff and Foley and votes with Bush almost all the time.

If you live closer to Westchester than to Staten Island/Bay Ridge, you can help in an even closer House race. John Hall is an award-winning musician and citizen activist, former county legislator and school board president, 35-year member of Local 802 AFM and AFTRA. He has played guitar for, produced, and/or written songs for Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt, Chaka Khan, Ricky Skaggs, Chet Atkins, Steve Wariner, Bobby McFerrin, Linda Ronstadt, the Doobie Brothers and James Taylor. He is perhaps best known for his work with the band Orleans, of which he is a founding member. Hall is running against long-time Bush buddy Sue Kelly. A recent internal poll, done very carefully, indicated an almost dead heat. If you can volunteer for John Hall we can make NY-19 an unexpected pick up this year.

There is also a phone banking effort for John Hall that you can do in NYC or even in your own home. Here are the details from Hall's website:

We're asking all our supporters to chip in a little volunteer time to talk with voters about this election. You'll be amazed at how many voters you can win over in a few hours.

We know that voters in our district respond very well to a personal call from a dedicated John Hall supporter.

Can you spend a few hours on one of our phone banks? If so, fill out this form, and tell us where you live and when you're available. We're setting up phone bank locations all across the district, and we'll contact you to let you know which site is closest to you.

Can't get to one of our phone bank locations, but would like to make calls from home? Join the Home Team and you can be dialing from the convenience of your home within minutes.

Even if it is just a few hours a week, donating your time to the campaign will be a great help. Our volunteer coordinators will work with you to maximize your impact. Thank you for your support!

You would be amazed how just a few hours of your time can help win.

Progressive Democrat Issue 90: MIDWEST PROGRESSIVE GROUPS

I don't yet have enough Midwest readers to do an extensive Groups and Meetings page like I do for NYC, Virginia and New Jersey. But I can at least highlight a few groups and encourage readers to set up their own local groups.

    WISCONSIN GROUPS:

First I naturally will highlight Winsconsin's local Democracy for America group, Democracy for Wisconsin. Democracy for Wisconsin grew from the seeds planted by Howard Dean's presidential campaign. We believe that strong values and grassroots participation are the key to successfully promoting progressive policies and rebuilding the Democratic Party. Please help us take our country back! Local chapters are listed on their website.

Drinking Liberally in Wisconsin: Promoting democracy one pint at a time! Drinking liberally is a social organization with chapters nationwide. There are surprisingly few Wisconsin drinking liberally groups! There are currently only two Wisconsin Drinking Liberally groups (see below). If there isn't one near you, you can set one up at the Drinking Liberally website. If you don't like bars, I have always thought non-drinkers could set up their own drinking liberally groups in coffee houses. Here are the current Wisconsin groups:

    Madison, Wisconsin
    * First and third Tuesday of each month (next meeting October 3), 7:00 pm onward
    * Genna's, 105 W Main St

    * Club Garibaldi, 2501 S Superior St
    * Hosted by Stacie Rosenzweig, Scott Feldstein and Jason Haas, milwaukee (at) drinkingliberally.org

    INDIANA GROUPS:

First, I will highlight the very important Indiana Progressives PAC. Indiana Progressives believe to win nationally we must first win locally. Their message is positive, practical and progressive! And hopefully will be popular as well! Be a part of Indiana Progressives by registering with their site today.

Drinking Liberally in Indiana: Promoting democracy one pint at a time! Drinking liberally is a social organization with chapters nationwide. There are six Indiana Drinking Liberally groups (see below). If there isn't one near you, you can set one up at the Drinking Liberally website. Common Cause: Common Cause is a major force in Progressive Politics. It was founded in 1970 (by a Republican, mind you!) to counter the influence of special interests in Washington. Today they work on many of the same issues I am trying to highlight. Check out the NJ Common Cause website.

Please join us for a soup and bread supper, a participatory social justice quiz bowl and singing. Then take your bowl, donated by a local potter, home. More information about ticket sales later, but each ticket will cost $25. Please call Sally for more information at 434-984-4655 x229.

Please consider becoming a SPONSOR by donating an extra $25-200, so one to eight others can attend the Social Justice Bowl.

Progressive Democrat Issue 90: NATIONAL ACTION FOR VOTING RIGHTS

In 2000, the Republican Secretary of State of Florida, Katherine Harris, led the way by orchestrating a stolen election for George Bush. Or, more accurately, she blocked all attempts to verify the election and did all she could to favor a vote count that gave her state to Bush.

In 2002, Georgia surprisingly elected Republicans to the Senate and Governor positions in an election many call suspicious. No official investigation was ever done.

In 2004, Republican Secretary of State Ken Blackwell of Ohio did in Ohio what Katherine Harris did in Florida...make every attempt to disenfranchise Democratic areas and block any attempts to verify the vote.

In 2006 in San Diego county there was a special elecetion to replace the now-jailed Randy Cunningham. In a very close election, the Republican candidate won under circumstances that even right wing talk show host and former San Diego mayor Roger Hedgecock saw as highly suspicious.

Throughout the nation voting irregularities are occurring, usually under the watchful eyes of Republican secretaries of state, which almost always favor the Republican candidates. The scale of this is huge, but it can only happen if the public allows it to happen. We need to fight back.

There are MANY reforms we have to work for, including voting machines with paper ballots that can be legally recounted, and the elimination of partisan election boards. But for now, the number one issue is to get honest Democrats elected to secretary of state to stop the corruption of the Republican secretaries of state in states like Florida, Ohio and Georgia.

Many progressives around the nation have come to a similar conclusion. I have my own Act Blue Page focusing on secretary of state, attorney general and auditors in key states where election fraud or financial fraud need to be weeded out. These elected positions are CRITICAL if we want to deal with the Republican culture of corruption, cronyism and greed symbolized by people like Jack Abramoff, Tom DeLay, Randy Cunningham, Katherine Harris and Ken Blackwell.

I also want to highlight two other efforts along these lines, focusing specifically on the position of secretary of state. First there is the Secretary of State (SoS) Project:

The Secretary of State Project was created by concerned citizens to provide an easy-to-use, low-cost vehicle for online donations to key Secretary of State races...

A modest political investment in electing clean candidates to critical Secretary of State offices is an efficient way to protect the election in 2008. It’s impossible to place election observers at every precinct where voter suppression tactics may be deployed. What’s more, the most significant barriers to voting are set months in advance of any election – when voter registration laws are selectively enforced, when minorities are purged from voter rolls, and when decisions are made about what kind of voting machines are purchased.

The SoS Project focuses on the secretary of state position in Ohio, Minnesota, Iowa, Colorado, Nevada, Michigan and New Mexico.

Then Democracy for America has its own version of the secretary of state project which seems related to but also distinct from the above project. DFA's own SoS Project describes itself as follows:

The best way to protect our vote is to elect responsible, ethical leaders to the office of Secretary of State. When people like Ken Blackwell and Katherine Harris control the election process it should be no surprise that voters are disenfranchised and that our democracy is undermined.

Democracy for America is supporting four great Secretary of State candidates that will start restoring fairness to our elections. These candidates all support verifiable paper ballots and strong protections for voter rights. They all have a great chance to win, but they need your help to put their campaigns over the top.

The four candidates supported by the DFA SoS Project are those running in California, Ohio, Minnesota and Vermont. I suspect that this list differs from the previous one because each group has its own endorsement process, leading to an overlapping but distinct focus.

PLEASE make some donations here. Or if you live in these states, please volunteer to help. Secretary of state is an often ignored position...but the future of our democracy partly depends on who is elected to these positions. Help elect honest, dependable, intelligent secretaries of state.

Progressive Democrat Issue 90: GETTING ACTIVE THROUGHOUT THE NATION

This is how our coalition will be built: through out local action. Our success depends on you and your activism. There are many ways you can get active. Below I try to provide a good variety of options and urge you all to find a couple that suit you. These groups below are the way we can get our country back. If we don’t get involved we won’t win in 2006 and beyond. Joy and I are currently involved in a few groups plus our own organizing efforts bringing different groups together and we are finding it a good boost to our social life. We are meeting cool people and it makes us get out a couple of times a month more than we would otherwise.

    Finding your local groups:

Democracy for America: Founded by Howard Dean, now run by his brother Jim Dean, this group is very effective at the local grass roots. Many think this is the future of the Democratic Party. I think this is partly true, though the neighborhood Dem party clubs will continue to be vital to our efforts as well. This is a group that you really should be active in either by joining a local meetup or starting one of your own.

Drinking Liberally: An informal, inclusive weekly Democratic drinking club. Raise your spirits while you raise your glass, and share ideas while you share a pitcher. Drinking Liberally gives like-minded, left-leaning individuals a place to talk politics. You don't need to be a policy expert and this isn't a book club - just come and learn from peers, trade jokes, vent frustration and hang out in an environment where it's not taboo to talk politics. Find your local drinking liberally group or start your own with a few buddies.

The Democratic Party: Now that Howard Dean is in the driver’s seat I am hoping the Democrats will become more effective on the local level. One of the main complaints against the DNC in the past couple of elections is that they didn’t help the local parties in most parts of the nation. If you go to the DNC website and find the “Get Local” pull down menu on the left, you can find your local Dem groups. I strongly urge you to get involved with your local Dem club since it is often these groups that actually do much of the footwork to win each district.

Critical Mass: Critical Mass is a bicyclist movement (NOT an organized group!) that holds weekly protests all over the world to protest pollution. Go here to find the closest Critical Mass action in your area (site covers ALL of North America).

Wellstone Action: Paul Wellstone started something in Minnesota and his death hasn’t stopped it. Wellstone’s family is continuing his work and expanding it throughout the nation. Wellstone Action trains activists and grassroots candidates and they did very well in the last election. I urge you to look into any nearby Wellstone Action events.

Common Cause: Common Cause is a major force in Progressive Politics. It was founded in 1970 (by a Republican, mind you!) to counter the influence of special interests in Washington. Today they work on many of the same issues I am trying to highlight. Look for your state’s Common Cause organization.

To find the League of Conservation Voters branch in your state, CLICK HERE. This is the group you should be involved with if the environment is your thing.

To find the NARAL branch in your state, CLICK HERE. This is the group you should be involved with if choice is your thing.

Finally I suggest Americans for Democratic Action. ADA is a progressive branch of the Democratic Party. Email: adaction@ix.netcom.com for info on local groups.
