The Progressive Democrat Newsletter grew out of the frustration of the 2004 election. Originally intended for New York City progressives, its readership is now national. For anyone who wants to be alerted by email whenever this newsletter is updated (usually weekly), please send your email address and let me know what state you live in (so I can keep track of my readership).

    Progressive Democrat Issue 61: THOUGHTS

This last week was Martin Luther King jr.’s birthday. I happened to watch some old All in the Family episodes. For those who are too young to remember, this was the Sit Com that broke all the rules so that all modern Sit Coms could do what they do. In fact it broke so many rules it probably would be unacceptable today. It directly faced such previously forbidden topics as racism, sexism, rape, addiction, etc. All in the Family was one of the most pivotal TV shows in history.

One episode I watched on Monday struck me. Archie Bunker’s niece went out with a date with Lionel. Again, for those who don’t remember, Archie was a racist and Lionel was one of the first serious black characters on TV. The very concept of a mixed race couple was practically unacceptable on TV at the time and it took a show like All in the Family to confront America with it’s racism.

I have been so used to seeing mixed race couples, both in NYC and Los Angeles, for at least 20 years. Without realizing it at the time I witnessed the transition from mixed race couples being almost too unacceptable to comprehend to being accepted at least in big cities. That is progress. And, as I observed a year ago, I think there is no question that Barak Obama’s easy Senate win also shows how far we have come since the death of MLK.

But there is no question that equality has not yet been achieved in reality even if there is nominally legal equality. Mixed race couples are acceptable in the circles I have been used to for 20 years, but some places even in NYC would still be hostile to the sight. And I still hear fools ask the question, “Is America ready for a black President?”

Martin Luther King’s dream has been legally realized, but the reality is far different. If there is one thing that illustrated that dramatically and tragically it was hurricane Katrina. Whether or not the abandonment of thousands of Americans to die in Louisiana and Mississippi was because of race or because of class doesn’t matter so much, because EITHER WAY, Martin Luther King’s dream has been lost in the reality of many people’s life. We have come a long way, but there is no question that we have not reached a point where all babies born in America have equal chances of success regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, etc.

I think the political strength of any group comes down to three things: money, votes and volunteerism. This is something I have discussed a few times in this newsletter, but it always bears repeating. These three things win elections, so they get the attention of both political parties. The low voter turnout among blacks is a problem and I think this low voter turnout hurts the community. Neither party puts that large a premium on the black community because of this low voter turnout. Of course it is more complicated than that—there are vested interests that don’t want a change in the status quo. But imagine the effect it would have if there was a nearly 100% voter turnout in the black community. In some areas like NYC and Virginia, for example, this would make the black community very important in elections and their needs would become higher priorities for both political parties.

This is how I put it a year ago. Political participation leads to political relevance. What I didn’t quite realize until hurricane Katrina drove it home for all of America was that political relevance is required for survival in Bush America. If you aren’t relevant, your life means nothing. You may be left to die in a hurricane, or sent to die in Iraq or allowed to die of AIDS or executed in a justice system that remains flawed when it comes to providing equal protection to all races and classes. In short, the groups in America who lack adequate political relevance now face death because of their political irrelevance. This was illustrated even more explicitly when a former cabinet member and current radio show host, Republican Bill Bennett, publicly declared that, "if you wanted to reduce crime, you could - if that were your sole purpose - abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down." (see Congressman John Conyer’s diary). This is the Republican view of Americans who are not relevant to them.

Again, I have brought this up before, but it may be the biggest lesson of 2005. If you aren’t important to the Bush administration you are expendable and possibly even suspect of being un-America. It is thus of considerable importance for ALL Americans to exert their political relevance.

In honor of Martin Luther King, jr., and with this idea of increased voter turnout helping the community, I urge your support of the NAACP voter fund which seeks to register black voters and to ensure the black vote is not suppressed by the Republicans.

Progressive Democrat Issue 61: POLITICAL RELEVANCE

I am repeating this from my newsletter from right after hurricane Katrina because it is just as important now as it was then, and it resonates with the message of Martin Luther King, jr.

How do we address the rising racism, anti-Semitism and hatred in America? There is no easy answer. It took this nation nearly 100 years and a Civil War to decide that slavery was unacceptable. It took another 100 years and the martyrdom of several wonderful people, including King, to get America to admit that every American has the right to vote. Yet we still haven’t fully realized that admission that every American has the right to vote as we realize that systematic voter fraud and intimidation affected the outcomes of the National elections in 2000 and 2004 as well as the Georgia elections in 2002. Will that take another 100 years before the hard earned work of Martin Luther King, jr. goes from legal reality to actual reality?

I am a big fan of empowerment. In American politics there are two things that matter most: money and votes. Money and votes get respect. I firmly believer that the higher the voter turnout of a neighborhood, the more respect and more benefits they get from their government. Poverty and being the constant target of racism seems to inspire apathy. But the people who need to vote the most are those very people who have been abandoned by their government. Poor and minority communities need to vote. Why? Because unless they suddenly get enough money to get noticed by politicians, then votes are the only bargaining chip they have short of rioting. Any neighborhood that has high voter turnout gets noticed. Any community that has high voter turnout gets noticed. Any group, be it racial, religious or ideological, that delivers votes (like the NRA) gets noticed.

I would add a third layer to empowerment. Money, votes and…activism. Groups that are known to deliver petitions, write letters, participate in boycotts, shout the loudest also get noticed. The squeaky wheel gets the grease and the right wing have turned being the squeaky wheel into an art form. They can, with a straight face, complain of being persecuted even when they control all national media, all levels of the Federal government, and most state governments. They can sound like the squeaky wheel even when they dominate every aspect of American society. The left can barely make a coherent squeak even when people are dying in New Orleans because they are seen as unimportant by the Bush Administration. This has to change. We have to be the activists who shout louder, volunteer more, vote more, petition more, write more letters, make more phone calls and have more boycotts.

If you don’t have the money to get noticed, get the activism and votes in your neighborhood to get noticed.

This newsletter is activism based. So, what do I recommend people do? It doesn’t matter where you live, who you are or how red your state is. Your political relevance depends on the affluence, the level of activism and the voter turnout in your area. It isn’t easy to affect the affluence of your neighborhood. But you are a community member with friends and family around you. You are a potential catalyst for activating your community, which in turn, over years, can be a catalyst for raising your community’s relevance within your city, state and nation. In some ways that is what my newsletter is all about—helping people be that catalyst for their community. Katrina and the Iraq show us that political irrelevance can mean death. The poor blacks died in New Orleans because they were irrelevant to our government. The poor of America and Iraq die in the Iraq War because they are irrelevant to our government. In Bush America, if you are not politically relevant, your life may be threatened.

So, reach out to your community and give them the message that they better make themselves relevant to the government or they may be the next hurricane victims left to die. Start a local Democracy for America group. Get your neighbors joining you running for Democratic County Committee or any other local positions. Saturate your neighborhood with voter registration drives. But don’t do voter registration just because you want Dems to win. Get your entire community to register and vote because that is the path to empowerment and political relevance if you can’t win the lottery.

Progressive Democrat Issue 61: POLITICAL RELEVANCE IN THE MEDIA

I plugged this a few weeks back, but it is also appropriate to mention it in the context of political relevance and the legacy of Martin Luther King, jr. The Congressional Black Caucus is an example of how far we have come since Martin Luther King, jr.’s time. And now there is a TV program on CoLoursTV focusing on the Congressional Black Caucus.

A friend of mine, Chris Owens, is a co-host of a brand new program (started this month) called "Inside the Congressional Black Caucus." Chris is son of Brooklyn Congressman Major Owens (one of the few who voted AGAINST the Patriot Act and AGAINST the invasion of Iraq), is running for Congress himself, and is a brother of a member of the Cosby Show cast. Below is an excerpt from Chris' announcement from last month of the airing of this new show. Check it out!

It is my pleasure and honor to announce the launch of "Inside The Congressional Black Caucus", a one-hour public affairs program…on the CoLoursTV network Sunday[s]…at 9:00 am.

ICBC will be bringing information about the 43 members of the Congressional Black Caucus and their work to the American people. Yours truly [Chris Owens] is the Executive Producer of ICBC as well as one of the hosts.

We are proud to bring you an excellent and entertaining program that will soon be a great current affairs and educational program available on different networks.

CoLoursTV is currently carried on Dish TV (Channel 9407) as well as some Comcast and Adelphia cable systems. Check the cable schedule in your area. If you cannot get CoLoursTV where you live, call your cable carrier and tell them "I want my ICBC!"

Please check out the show if you get the chance.

Progressive Democrat Issue 61: FIGHTING WAL-MART

Wal-Mart is the prime example of the WORST of American business practices. They hurt local businesses, violate immigration and labor laws, pay rock bottom wages, sell items made by prison labor and in sweat shops, and they really aren’t as cheap as they claim. This is from the Campaign for America's Future:

Last month, Clear Channel refused to allow us to post the slogan that you selected for the billboard we had reserved at Wal-Mart headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas. To curry favor with Wal-Mart, Clear Channel censored our billboard -- despite the reality that our slogan, "Wal-Mart: Killing Small Businesses One Main Street at a Time," is true. A newly released Campaign for America’s Future study concludes that Wal-Mart sucked more than $20 billion out of local economies across America this holiday season alone. [1]

Clear Channel controls its billboard, but it can’t control us. And we won’t let it stop us from exposing Wal-Mart’s devastating effects on American Main Streets. Since Clear Channel blocked our use of one billboard, we’ve created 10,000.

We’ve printed 10,000 bumper stickers that mimic the billboard’s design and message. Because of your generosity, we’ve been able to deliver most of these mini-billboards, free of charge, to community organizers across America who are leading active fights to stop Wal-Mart from building new supercenters. These organizers are already distributing the bumper stickers far and wide in their communities to help build opposition to Wal-Mart exactly where supercenters pose an immediate threat to Main Street. Wal-Mart will regret Clear Channel’s decision to censor you in Bentonville.
In addition to getting these 10,000 mini-billboards in front of the eyes that need to see them most, we’ve made them available for anyone to purchase. Please join us in challenging Wal-Mart’s Main Street destruction by displaying a bumper sticker of your own. We’ve also created a flyer that you can download, print out and post for free. Get your bumper sticker and free flyer today.

Meet Glenn Train. He is a volunteer working with South Westminster Organized for Responsible Development (SWORD), and he’s posting our bumper stickers across Westminster and Arvada, Colo. Glenn’s already blanketed a fence along a major road across the street from a proposed supercenter site with our message. And, he’s distributing them far and wide through his organization to let his community know that Wal-Mart’s expansion will sap the life out of Main Street businesses.
Thanks to your generosity, Glenn isn’t alone. In Austin, Tex, Austin Full Circle is distributing stickers to block a total of eleven proposed Wal-Marts. In Bend, Ore, Our Community First is posting the message in its fight to save a pristine central Oregon small town.

These organizations are grateful for your support -- and, we’re excited that our shared message is challenging Wal-Mart precisely where it's posing immediate threats to Main Street. The power and truth of our shared message is undeniable -- and, thanks to your support, the word is getting out.

If you already donated to this effort, ten of our mini-billboards are on their way to you now -- free of charge. If not, please join this effort now. Take another step today to expose the reality about Wal-Mart. Expose the high costs of Wal-Mart’s deceptive “low price” image in your home town. Get your bumper stickers and free flyers today.

[1] Institute for America’s Future, Wal-Mart’s Holiday Sales Create a $20 Billion Loss for Local Economies, January 2006.

I urge everyone to participate in fighting Wal-Mart. But I also like to give alternatives when I call for a boycott. For those who can, I recommend Costco, a company that pays its employees well, treats their customers right and still turn a profit. Costco is an excellent alternative to Wal-Mart.

Progressive Democrat Issue 61: Fight for the Court, Oppose Alito

Continuing this from last week, I am taking this from the ACLU:

As the Senate begins hearings on the nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito, Jr. to the Supreme Court, the ACLU is taking an extraordinary step.

That is because this is an extraordinary time. Our President has claimed unprecedented executive powers and has shown a deep hostility towards protecting individual liberties and rights.

The ACLU opposes a Supreme Court nominee only when his or her record clearly indicates that the nominee is fundamentally hostile to civil liberties. With that context and standard in mind, we believe there is no choice but to oppose the Alito nomination.

We encourage each and every person in our country who cares about the future of civil liberties to urge their Senators to reject this nomination.

At a time when the President of the United States is defying the Constitution and showing contempt for the checks and balances essential to democracy, the last thing we can tolerate is a Supreme Court nominee who has a broad view of executive power and a limited view of the judicial role in checking that power.

A Supreme Court Justice with Judge Alito’s troubling record on civil liberties issues, including reproductive freedom and civil rights, would be the wrong choice at any point in time.

At this moment in time, a nominee with Judge Alito’s history of deference to authority and support for government power would strike a blow to the future of fundamental freedoms.

In this high-stakes climate, the Supreme Court must be a bulwark against incursions on our fundamental freedoms.

Judge Alito would replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, considered a moderate voice and a critical swing vote on civil liberties and civil rights issues.

For example, in the case of American-born detainee Yaser Esam Hamdi, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor said the Court has "made clear that a state of war is not a blank check for the president when it comes to the rights of the nation's citizens." We are deeply concerned that Judge Alito would not bring the same balance and moderation to the Court.

The ACLU and freedom-loving people all across America are fighting to uphold the Constitution and the Bill of Rights against a climate of disregard, and in some cases illegality, in the current administration.

Tell your Senators to Oppse Alito!

And, of course, write a letter to the editor saying why you oppose Alito.

Progressive Democrat Issue 61: Environmental Action

    Also continued from last week:

Tell Exxon's New CEO - End the Disinformation Campaign

ExxonMobil, the most powerful, most profitable, most polluting oil company, claims that it is the world's leading supporter of global warming research. But what Exxon leaves out is that it spends millions of dollars to convince people that global warming is a hoax.

Tell ExxonMobil's new CEO, Rex Tillerson, that enough is enough. The world needs action, not misinformation campaigns. Urge him to move ExxonMobil in a new direction!

And Remember, Exxon/Mobil is still a target of a progressive boycott, with people preferring Citgo, BP, Sunoco or Chevron as alternatives, depending who you ask.

Progressive Democrat Issue 61: NYC ACTION

CRITCAL MASS BICYCLE MOVEMENT! Critical Mass is a bicyclist movement (NOT an organized group!) that holds weekly protests all over the world to protest pollution. Rides are the last Friday of every month starting in Union Sq. Park North, 7PM! At a DFNYC meeting attended by Norm Seigel, Norm used Critical Mass as an example of the kind of activism that NYC needs most and the way Bloomberg is trying to squelch our rights and our voices. Critical Mass deserves our help. According to Bloomberg, my inclusion of this in my newsletter is probably illegal. Well, I refuse to let Bloomberg tell me what I can and cannot write in my Newsletter.

And see their NYC calendar for Bike Workshops and other rides (including ones outside Manhattan). http://www.times-up.org/calendar/calendar.php

There is more you can do to support Critical Mass. This comes from a reader in Manhattan:

To help keep people involved in Critical Mass, people who might be sacred off because of renewed aggressiveness by the police, I have started a pledge drive that sponsors arrestees. This is a great way for people to stay involved in Critical Mass, stay on top of the issue, and use the NYPD and Bloomberg's tactics to work for us not against us. I am pledging $2 per arrestee, and the money will go to the Legal Aid Society. Pledges are made on the honor system. The more bicyclists the cops arrest the more money for defending civil rights is raised.

    BROOKLYN EVENTS:

11th Congressional District Candidates Forum: Lambda Independent Democrats will kick off the new year with a forum featuring the candidates for the hotly contested 11th congressional district seat being vacated by Major Owens on Thursday, January 26, 2006 at the Montauk Club, 25 8th Avenue at Lincoln Place. This is the first time in a decade that there will be an open congressional seat in Brooklyn, so join us in hearing from candidates Carl Andrews, Yvette Clarke, Chris Owens, Nick Perry and David Yassky.
I want to add my personal comment on this race. Many Progressives love to complain about the weaknesses of the Democratic Party. Well, hotly contested primaries like this one are YOUR CHANCE to influence the Democratic Party. This race pits candidates linked to the corrupt machine against progressives and semi-progressives. People who complain about the party but fail to get involved on this level should just keep their mouths shut. Come help reform politics in Brooklyn by attending this forum and questioning these candidates yourself. Then support the candidate YOU like. Otherwise, I don't want to hear you complain.

Progressive Democrat Issue 61: VIRGINIA FOCUS

Virginia has the chance to join 27 other states in restricting the ability to commit fraud on the election system. The General Assembly’s Senate Privileges and Elections Committee is set to hear Senate Bill 424 on Tuesday January 24th at 4:00pm. We have the support of at least 2 moderate Republicans on the committee, so we need all six Democrats to join in this critical battle and support SB424, in order to move it forward.

27 states have passed laws requiring that every voting machine produce a voter-verified paper ballot, mandatory auditing of the ballots to the machine count to make sure votes are not being switched by technical error or intentional fraud, and state inspection of the secret source code that is used to program the voting machines. It is absolutely critical that we get these reform measures in place to ensure that no vote-rigging can occur on a widespread scale here in VA.

The Democratic National Committee (Report material at end of email) has come out in complete support of this issue. They urge that paperless touchscreen machines (also known as DREs) be thrown out in favor of precinct based optical scan machines (PBOS) because of the incredible ease with which elections could be rigged. Our Democracy is too sacred to allow malicious forces to criminal alter our chosen representatives.

Please call upon the six democrats on the Senate Privileges and Elections Committee to support SB424 immediately. Even if they are not your personal representatives, as a committee they represent all of Virginia.

The Voting Rights Institute of the Democratic National Committee issued a report on June 22, 2005 following more than five months of investigation into the voting in Ohio in November, 2004. They have very clear recommendations regarding voting systems that they urge Democrats across the county to push for.

Full report from DNC is available: http://www.democrats.org/a/2005/06/democracy_at_ri.php

Regarding DREs (Direct Record Electronics or touchscreens):

“The study findings and independent analysis indicate that the use of DRE (touchscreen) machines is highly problematic and the use of precinct-tabulated optical scan systems is vastly preferable.” (Section 2: Executive Summary, Section H, Page 9)

“Current DRE voting systems, in addition to being extremely expensive to procure and maintain, are vulnerable to fraud. Existing standards and practices for certification of voting systems are insufficient to provide security for existing DRE systems, and significant effort will be required to remedy these deficiencies in the future.” (Section 1: Letter of Introduction to DNC Chairman Howard Dean, Page 2)

“Paper trail audits offer an improvement over current DRE systems that provide no paper trail but they do not guard against tampering, improper equipment calibration, and faulty aggregation of the votes cast.” (Section 1: Letter of Introduction to DNC Chairman Howard Dean, Page 2)

Regarding precinct-based optical scan voting systems:

“Our team has analyzed the effectiveness of the various voting machines used in Ohio and has strong recommendations favoring precinct-count optical scan machines.” (Section 1: Letter of Introduction to DNC Chairman Howard Dean, Page 2).

“Precinct based optical scan systems remain superior with respect to ensuring that everyone’s vote is counted.” (Section 2: Executive Summary, Section H, Page 9)

“Jurisdictions should be encouraged to use precinct-tabulated optical scan systems with a computer assisted device at each precinct, in preference to touchscreen (“direct recording equipment” or “DRE”) machines.” (Section 12, Recommendations for Future Action, Page 2, Number 11)

“Precinct-based optical scan systems are the most accurate voting systems available today. They are also reasonably priced and can satisfy HAVA requirements in a cost-effective manner with devices such as the ES&S AutoMark.” (Section 7: Electronic Voting: Accuracy, Accessibility, and Fraud, Page 7, Recommendation 1)

Progressive Democrat Issue 61: National Action: Let's start winning big!

ALSO continuing THIS from last week because it is time to start now preparing for November. This is also how we gain political relevance: building our grassroots. It is NOW 2006 and if we want to win this year on all levels, we have to start organizing. Please try to find one or more of the below donations to make and/or groups to join.

Howard Dean is telling us to kick them while they're down...and I, for one, am willing to join in.

The Republicans are certainly not down for the count yet. But they are down. They are on the floor whining about how unfair the Democrats are because we are trying to hold them accountable for their failure against terrorism, the failure of their Iraq policies, the failure of their response to Katrina, and their shameful corruption. They are down on the ground hoping we will give them a chance to recover so they can counter attack. Meanwhile, the DNC, under Dean's leadership and with our help, has raised a record amount of money in 2005. Howard Dean wants us to do even more.

I am with Howard Dean: kick them while they're down! Don't let them counter attack. Don't let them off the hook. And let's not be satisfied even with the record fundraising in 2005. Let's kick ass starting now and going all the way through November 2006 and beyond.

    Here is Howard Dean's message:

As 2006 begins, I am reaching out to you and every other Democratic Party supporter I can find. I'm urging you to immediately contribute to the Democratic National Committee.

We cannot let Republicans off the hook - in 2006 Democrats will not back down.

Help make January the biggest month ever with Democrats making more donations than in any previous month in history.

This is the year when the corruption, cronyism, and incompetence of the Republican Party collides with a powerful grassroots Democratic campaign. They won't know what hit them.

If we can count on the 2006 support of loyal friends like you, we'll take the power out of their hands. And we'll move America forward.

Here is why your donation means so much.

With your support, we can recruit strong Democratic candidates to challenge the increasing number of vulnerable Republican incumbents.

With your support, we can stand behind Democratic candidates who are taking strong stands on the issues and giving powerful voice to our values.

I'm talking about Democrats who understand, like you and I do, the one principle that should guide everything we do in 2006:

We cannot let Republicans off the hook - in 2006 Democrats will not back down...

Are you ready to take it to the Republicans every day in 2006?

Are you ready to continue our work building a year-round, 50-state grassroots Democratic Party capable of carrying our candidates to victory?

Then now is the time to act. Be part of the biggest single month of Democratic membership support in history...

This is the month when - in a collective act of political will - we're going to propel our 2006 campaign forward all across America. And, from this point on, we're never looking back, never stopping until we win.

We've got the Republicans on the ropes. Let's go for it.

    On to victory,

    Governor Howard Dean, M.D.

Right on Howard! The bastards have been looting our nation and pissing all over our Constitution for years now. The poor babies are starting to stumble and get caught in their own messes. Now is the time to take them down! I urge everyone to answer Howard Dean's call. Do it by contributing as Dean asks above. Better yet, show Dean your support by buying a Democracy Bond to help set up the 50-state strategy.

For those who aren't as keen on Dean as I am, there is another 50-state, grassroots strategy you can participate in to kick the Republicans while their sorry asses are on the ground. Act Blue has their own 50-state strategy aimed at activating the grassroots nationwide with $10,000 per state seed money. Their approach is distinct from Howard Dean's efforts but is just as important and even MORE supportive of the grassroots.

I would also suggest three other Act Blue campaigns that might interest you and can help make 2006 our best year yet, starting this month. You can donate to take down the ten weakest Republicans in the House, or to defend the most targeted Democrats in the House, or donate to my campaign to defeat the Katrina 11, the 11 Republicans who are willing to give Halliburton no-bid contracts but not to help the victims of hurricane Katrina.

However you feel about Dean, making January a record month for fundraising and watching the corrupt Halliburton Republicans panic is bound to start your year off right.

You can also get active locally as a volunteer within your local Democratic Party organization, or your local Democracy for America group. We are always asking "where are the Democrats." Well, WE are the Democrats, too. So where are we? Hopefully we are giving our time and money right here and now to defeat the un-American Halliburton Republicans and to retake our nation for the American people.

Progressive Democrat Issue 61: GETTING LOCAL AROUND THE NATION

This is how our coalition will be built: through out local action. Our success depends on you and your activism. There are many ways you can get active. Below I try to provide a good variety of options and urge you all to find a couple that suit you. These groups below are the way we can get our country back. If we don’t get involved we won’t win in 2006 and beyond. Joy and I are currently involved in a few groups plus our own organizing efforts bringing different groups together and we are finding it a good boost to our social life. We are meeting cool people and it makes us get out a couple of times a month more than we would otherwise.

    Finding your local groups:

Democracy for America: Founded by Howard Dean, now run by his brother Jim Dean, this group is very effective at the local grass roots. Many think this is the future of the Democratic Party. I think this is partly true, though the neighborhood Dem party clubs will continue to be vital to our efforts as well. This is a group that you really should be active in either by joining a local meetup or starting one of your own.

Drinking Liberally: An informal, inclusive weekly Democratic drinking club. Raise your spirits while you raise your glass, and share ideas while you share a pitcher. Drinking Liberally gives like-minded, left-leaning individuals a place to talk politics. You don't need to be a policy expert and this isn't a book club - just come and learn from peers, trade jokes, vent frustration and hang out in an environment where it's not taboo to talk politics. Find your local drinking liberally group or start your own with a few buddies.

The Democratic Party: Now that Howard Dean is in the driver’s seat I am hoping the Democrats will become more effective on the local level. One of the main complaints against the DNC in the past couple of elections is that they didn’t help the local parties in most parts of the nation. If you go to the DNC website and find the “Get Local” pull down menu on the left, you can find your local Dem groups. I strongly urge you to get involved with your local Dem club since it is often these groups that actually do much of the footwork to win each district.

Critical Mass: Critical Mass is a bicyclist movement (NOT an organized group!) that holds weekly protests all over the world to protest pollution. Go here to find the closest Critical Mass action in your area (site covers ALL of North America).

Wellstone Action: Paul Wellstone started something in Minnesota and his death hasn’t stopped it. Wellstone’s family is continuing his work and expanding it throughout the nation. Wellstone Action trains activists and grassroots candidates and they did very well in the last election. I urge you to look into any nearby Wellstone Action events.

Common Cause: Common Cause is a major force in Progressive Politics. It was founded in 1970 (by a Republican, mind you!) to counter the influence of special interests in Washington. Today they work on many of the same issues I am trying to highlight. Look for your state’s Common Cause organization.

To find the League of Conservation Voters branch in your state, CLICK HERE. This is the group you should be involved with if the environment is your thing.

To find the NARAL branch in your state, CLICK HERE. This is the group you should be involved with if choice is your thing.

Finally I suggest Americans for Democratic Action. ADA is a progressive branch of the Democratic Party. Email: adaction@ix.netcom.com for info on local groups.
