    Progressive Democrat Issue 49: THOUGHTS

What a month! DeLay’s indictment. Indictments in Ohio and Kentucky. And, Libby’s indictment this week. Republican corruption and treason is finally being noticed by the nation as a whole. Our efforts over months have been a small part of all this. All of these have been part of my efforts in this newsletter and my Target the Corrupt Republican blog.

If people like us had never written letters to Congress and the media, all of this would have been ignored, swept under the carpet. Our efforts are a small part of these indictments. But what do these indictments mean?

Of course they mean bad press for Bush and his Halliburton Republican party. Of course they mean the chance for Democrats in 2006 skyrockets, if we take advantage of the Republican weaknesses. But there is more and this is the most fundamental thing about these indictments.

It means America works. For 5 years now, with stolen elections, illegal invasions, the destruction of the Constitution, I have worried that American democracy was dying. I have been reminded over and over again of the end of the Roman Republic and the end of the Weimar Republic. The historical parallels for what we have been going through here in America were not encouraging. I was almost convinced that America was becoming a one-party dictatorship.

But these indictments, encompassing the ruling party in several states and Federally, shows that America is STILL governed by the rule of law. That is so important! That means American democracy has a damned good chance of surviving the un-American, anti-Constitution Republican attacks. It means even Tom DeLay at the height of his domination of America is subject to the law, whether he wants it or not. America is not yet broken. We can still save it. THAT is what these indictments mean. That is a wonderful thing, folks, and is well worth celebrating. So, take a moment to appreciate your efforts over the last 6 months and appreciate America and its seemingly resilient democracy.

Progressive Democrat Issue 49: MEDIA ACTION I

Folks, this is not the time to sit back and watch what’s going on. The right is trying their damnedest to spin things to their benefit or to deflect attention from the nationwide indictments of Republicans. What was Bush’s speech on the very day that Libby was indicted? He talked of 9/11, 9/11, 9/11…terrorism, terrorism…fnord! We have to show the media that WE are paying attention, in a very focused way, on the corruption and treason of the Republican Party.

I know many of you. You have strong opinions and you like to express those opinions. So, collect your thoughts on Republican corruption and treason, and WRITE THE MEDIA!

Progressive Democrat Issue 49: MEDIA ACTION II

The right wing propaganda machine has been targeting their main critic. Those who know Mediamatters.org know that they are one of the best counters to the right wing lies and distortions.

    A plea from Mediamatters.org:

Fox News host Bill O'Reilly is leading an aggressive right-wing attack on Media Matters. O'Reilly and his allies see the success that Media Matters has had combating conservative misinformation in the media, and they are afraid. So they are lashing out at us, hoping to destroy us so that we can no longer hold them accountable for their false claims.

…last night, O'Reilly attacked us again. Using his platform as host of a cable news program, O'Reilly is relentlessly attacking us, night after night -three days in a row now, and four in recent weeks ... and countless more times on his radio show.
To be clear: O'Reilly has not pointed out a single factual error in our work. He offers no examples, no facts. He simply insults us, and makes baseless claims about us. He's a bully, and he's lashing out at us because we fight back against his lies and misinformation.

If you haven't done so yet, stand with us -and with other Americans from across the country -and stand up to Bill O'Reilly. Please donate now to help combat conservative misinformation, and be sure to sign up now to receive important email updates from Media Matters.

I hesitate to publicize mediamatters.org to you because you might not need my newsletter if you rely on them! But, they are fighting the good fight. Help them out.

Progressive Democrat Issue 49: BOYCOTT REMINDERS

Boycotts are not easy, but when used with determination, they often work. Not always, but they work enough that they are worth doing. The right boycotts far more often than the left, so companies are more likely to listen to the right than to the left. They lose little business if they anger leftists, but they do lose business if they anger the right.

We have to change that. The only way to do that is through action—boycotts and letter writing.

Here is a daily Kos diary listing the 25 top Republican donors.

As some of the comments in the diary indicate, the list is really only a starting point. I recommend looking it over as a first step towards deciding what YOU want to boycott. But it is an easy place to start. If all you want is a list to take with you when you go to the store, this is a pretty good one.

It takes a little more work, but BuyBlue.org is a good site to look up companies and find out how much they donate to Republicans and Democrats. This way you can compare and decide for yourself rather than rely on someone else’s list. The other thing you can do is click on each company and send them an email or FAX TELLING them you are boycotting or supporting them and why. This is pretty important because letters often have more impact that a boycott alone. So focusing on a few companies but writing them frequently telling them you are watching them can be more effective than boycotting the whole list of 25 top Republican donors without writing letters.

Here is a difficult one. Many of the worst companies and biggest Republican donors are tobacco companies. I would not be honest if I didn’t point out that one of the best ways to boycott Republican and irresponsible companies is to give up smoking. I realize this is difficult and the choice is of course yours. But it is something to keep in mind. And, of course, this is a boycott action that can save you lots of money in the long run.

Finally, there are two ongoing, very focused boycotts that are MOST important: Wal-Mart and Exxon/Mobil. Write letters and make phone calls to Exxon/Mobil.

Alternatives to Exxon/Mobil are Sunoco and Citgo. Sunoco tends to be neutral with not much good or bad about it. It donates mostly to Democrats and buys little of its oil from Saudi Arabia. Citgo is a Venezuelan company so most of their oil is local, not from Saudi Arabia. Hugo Chavez, the President of Venezuela, is a democratically elected leftist who is a huge thorn in the right’s side. His personality and policies are controversial, but he is a leftist who is a major target of people like Bush and Pat Robertson. So, as a protest of Bush and Robertson’s views, many are patronizing Citgo.

Two other more controversial companies are Chevron/Texaco and BP/Arco. Both donate mostly to Republicans. Both have some very bad environmental issues. But, Chevron also is one of the only oil companies that is proactive in its environmental and social policies. They have done a great deal to create an environmental and social policy that will avoid costly cleanups, poor worker morale, and will help get contracts with nations like Norway that require a high standard of environmental care. BP/Arco is one of the few oil companies that actually invests NOW in alternative energy sources rather than just “research” it. But many feel that BP’s environmentalism is mainly PR rather than practice. So, these two companies are by and large better than Exxon/Mobil, but debatably so.

And, of course, the best ways to boycott an oil company is to drive less, buy a hybrid and carpool. These actions can also save you money in the long run.

Wal-Mart is one of the worst companies in America. Their labor practices, treatment of women employees and their destruction of small businesses are extremely regressive. A good alternative is Costco.

Here is information on Wal-Mart’s anti-union policies.

Here is a Co-op America “No Wal-Mart” Holiday Page.

Here is the “Wake-up Wal-Mart” Campaign.

And here is a list of Wal-Mart boycott meetups where you can help organize against Wal-Mart in your community.

Keep up the pressure on these companies and spread the word. Each person boycotting and each letter sent to these companies the more effective our efforts will be.

Progressive Democrat Issue 49: NYC ACTIONS

Bloomberg. I keep hearing he is not a “real” Republican. I don’t understand this claim at all. First of all, his stand on First Amendment rights is EXACTLY in line with the Bush administration. He arrests protesters. He calls protesters “terrorists.” Remember, that “terrorist” accusation applies to my wife and me, who protested the Republican Convention. And also remember what the “terrorist” label can mean in America today—detention without due process and even torture. That is what “terrorist” means in America today and Bloomberg accused my wife and me of being terrorists. So, on the most basic level Bloomberg seems solidly Republican to me. His education plan is much like Bush’s “No Child Left Behind” scheme which tests kids more but fails to provide money to address the problems revealed by testing. Here is an Americans for Democratic Action article on Bloomberg and Education.

But there is more. Bloomberg, in his own words, puts himself in the Bush camp. Here is footage of Bloomberg at the Republican Convention solidly endorsing Bush for President.

In this, he is endorsing the entire Bush agenda, from the Iraq war to torture to corruption. Bloomberg is aligning himself solidly with Bush in that video. Did he qualify? No. He endorsed.

Finally, there are his donations. Michael Bloomberg donated $7 million to the Republican Convention. Remember, this is the convention where they wrapped themselves in 9/11 and used it to justify the Iraq invasion. Did Michael Bloomberg complain about what they did with his money? NO! He endorsed Bush and arrested protesters. But he also donated $250,000 (more than any Republican Congressperson by about a factor of 5) to Tom DeLay’s PAC—the one whose STATED purpose is to further the conservative agenda, including anti-choice, anti-environment, Iraq war, etc. He was one of the biggest donors to DeLay’s PAC, the same PAC whose corruption has led to DeLay’s indictment.

Michael Bloomberg has verbally and financially supported the Bush agenda and his actions on Civil Liberties and education closely parallel Bush’s. What more do New Yorkers need to see that this man has allied himself to the most corrupt and mean-spirited Republican administration of my lifetime.

PLEASE volunteer. Ferrer is running a very solidly grassroots campaign and without your help, Bloomberg’s money will win. The stealth Republican will win. Please show NYC what grassroots mean. Visit his website, check him out and, if you can, volunteer and/or donate:

Also, please write letters to the editor about Bloomberg representing Bush more than he does NYC.

Ferrer is a real New Yorker and I know from experience that he is more than willing to meet with and listen to the public. He deserves our support.

CRITCAL MASS BICYCLE MOVEMENT! Critical Mass is a bicyclist movement (NOT an organized group!) that holds weekly protests all over the world to protest pollution. Rides are the last Friday of every month starting in Union Sq. Park North, 7PM! At a DFNYC meeting attended by Norm Seigel, Norm used Critical Mass as an example of the kind of activism that NYC needs most and the way Bloomberg is trying to squelch our rights and our voices. Critical Mass deserves our help. According to Bloomberg, my inclusion of this in my newsletter is probably illegal. Well, I refuse to let Bloomberg tell me what I can and cannot write in my Newsletter.

There is more you can do to support Critical Mass. This comes from a reader in Manhattan:

To help keep people involved in Critical Mass, people who might be sacred off because of renewed aggressiveness by the police, I have started a pledge drive that sponsors arrestees. This is a great way for people to stay involved in Critical Mass, stay on top of the issue, and use the NYPD and Bloomberg's tactics to work for us not against us. I am pledging $2 per arrestee, and the money will go to the Legal Aid Society. Pledges are made on the honor system. The more bicyclists the cops arrest the more money for defending civil rights is raised.

Progressive Democrat Issue 49: NEW JERSEY FOCUS

Continued from last week because it is CRUNCH TIME:

Fighting for New Jersey, for Democracy and for America:

The elections are around the corner. New Jersey is one of the key states for 2005 and it isn’t just Kaine for Governor. Kaine’s campaign is an important part of the Democratic 50-state strategy to save American democracy, but there is much to be done at the local level.

Keep in mind, elections are won at the local level. Voter turnout is determined on the local level. The fate of state legislatures are determined on the local level. So what is going on locally in New Jeresy?

Here are some races I want to highlight. Donations and volunteer hours are CRUCIAL at this time to win these races. Winning these races will help Corzine win NJ. They will also help set the Democratic Party up for future wins in 2006. So your effort for these local races can help shift the balance in this nation away from the corrupt, dictatorial, anti-civil rights Republicans to the more honest, more grassroots, more freedom-loving Democratic party.

The other thing I want to emphasize is that Progressives are going to bat for certain candidates. The credibility of the Progressives in NJ and the credibility of you and me depend on the left effectively helping candidates to victory. These are the fights that progressives groups like Democracy for America have chosen to fight. Victory in these fights are particularly important for the credibility and the future effectiveness of the Progressive movement. A small donation or a donation of a few hours of time could help establish the credibility of the Progressive grassroots in New Jersey. THAT is what I am asking you to do.

Linda Greenstein for New Jersey State Assembly. Greenstein is a long-time resident and active citizen of Plainsboro. She is a former member of the Plainsboro Township Committee and the West Windsor-Plainsboro Board of Education. She has been at the forefront of progressive legislation, sponsoring major property tax reform initiatives and working to preserve and expand New Jersey’s affordable prescription drug program for seniors. Linda plans to develop a fair, equitable and progressive property tax system and strive to restore people's faith in government. She will also push for sound campaign finance reform. Join DFA in supporting Linda Greenstein for New Jersey State Assembly. The election is November 8th, 2005.

Progressive Democrat Issue 49: VIRGINIA FOCUS

Continued from last week because THIS is what matters in 2005

Going to bat for Virginia, for Democracy and for America:

The elections are around the corner. Virginia is one of the key states for 2005 and it isn’t just Kaine for Governor. Kaine’s campaign is an important part of the Democratic 50-state strategy to save American democracy, but there is much to be done at the local level.

Keep in mind, elections are won at the local level. Voter turnout is determined on the local level. The fate of state legislatures are determined on the local level. So what is going on locally in Virginia?

Here are some races I want to highlight. Donations and volunteer hours are CRUCIAL at this time to win these races. Winning these races will help Kaine win Virginia.

The credibility of the Progressives in Virginia and the credibility of you and me depend on the left effectively helping candidates to victory. These are the fights that progressives groups like Democracy for America have chosen to fight. Victory in these fights are particularly important for the credibility and the future effectiveness of the Progressive movement. A small donation or a donation of a few hours of time could help establish the credibility of the Progressive grassroots in Virginia. THAT is what I am asking you to do.

First of all, I am asking you to help Democracy for America fight for Leslie Byrne for Lt. Gov. This is a fight that DFA thinks is worth fighting for, so you and I need to recognize it’s importance and help win a victory for DFA:

Leslie Byrne for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia. For more than twenty years, Leslie has been serving the people of Virginia with distinction. She has fought tirelessly for working families and against special interests. Through her commonsense values, fiscal discipline and responsible investments in education, transportation and job growth, she has proven she is a stand-out leader. She won her contested primary this summer -- with your help, we can elect Leslie Byrne in November, and bring a progressive voice to this so-called “red state.” The election is November 8, 2005.

But let’s get even more local. Let’s go from Democracy for America to Democracy for Virginia. Here is a link to a list of candidates for VA. House of Delegates that have been endorsed by Democracy for Virginia. Monetary or volunteer time for these candidates help to give credibility to Virginia grassroots, so PLEASE do your best for these folks.

Finally, I have received a personal call to action from the Loudoun County Democrats. They are a lynchpin in the Virginia state-wide elections, and they have some particularly interesting races of their own. Many of the Loudoun County races overlap with the DFV targeted races. So donating to the Loudoun Democrats could help many good candidates.

But the request from the Loudoun Democrats for help went one step further. They particularly want to target one race where the (as they put it) “godfather of the Republican religious right” may be defeated. This could be a key race in Virginia and nationally. So, at the direct request of the Loudoun Democratic party, PLEASE donate time or money to help David Poisson defeat far right wing Delegate Dick Black.

With your help, Virginia could make history in November and take a HUGE step towards restoring democracy in America.

***Verified Voting Hearings in Richmond: Virginia is holding hearings to consider requiring voter-verified paper audit trails for voting equipment. Many Virginia jurisdictions have purchased paperless electronic voting machines, and others are considering doing so. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THESE HEARINGS. Your future vote may depend on it!

Digital voting machines that lack a voter-verified paper trail are subject to programming errors and possible fraud, with no ability for meaningful audits or recounts.

Attend the hearings and show support for voter-verified audit trails by wearing orange shirts or ribbons. A large audience will show that Virginians care about the integrity of our elections, and that we demand transparent and reliable elections.

Progressive Democrat Issue 49: NATIONAL ACTION

    Protect your children!

From Mainstreet Moms and Leave My Child Alone:

You Pushed Back for Privacy, We're Winning: Schools On Board

Since the launch of Leave My Child Alone in May, you have held more than 500 Leave My Child Alone events in 50 states, DC, and Puerto Rico. You put on ice cream socials, made radio ads, designed fliers, produced shows on local access TV, held rallies, got op-eds published, met with your elected officials, spoke at PTA meetings, showed the movie, hosted potlucks, went to school board meetings, and gave opt-out forms at football games. You got the NEA on board, the national PTA, you wrote resolutions with your local Dem clubs, brought your ACLU chapters in, dogged reluctant principals, and stood tall at Back-to-School Nights. Some of you are now looking at runs for school board! It is an utterly impressive batch of activity, far beyond our hopes back in May.

Press Gets Word Out; Coalition of Experienced & New; Beyond Opt Out

You added to the momentum by getting useful coverage in local media, and speaking up in the national press. You brought long-time counter recruitment pros together with the newly outraged -- and made good things happen. Now many of you are digging deeper, getting schools to tell students the ASVAB test is optional. Researching "Equal Access" rules guaranteeing the right to present alternatives on campus. Asking schools for guidelines on recruiters' campus access. And working now to get JAMRS opt out information publicized by schools to their students.

Military $teps It Up; Parents Go Local

Against the intensive pressure of a $4 billion recruiting budget, an upcoming Army ad budget of $1 billion, and a military that just had to report missing their year end recruiting goals, it's timely that families take such creative and bold actions to protect their children's privacy. You can bet this pressure is only going to grow, but because of your efforts and the work of other parents, students, educators and journalists, big change has happened fast. Accelerating citizen involvement has prompted school districts around the country to:

    · Adopt resolutions protecting family privacy
    · Send opt out forms home for the first time ever
    · Add opt out to their emergency cards
    · Move opt out deadlines back
    · Change from punitive "blanket opt out" policies to good policies
    · Allow students to opt themselves off the lists
    · Move to include JAMRS opt out information in registration packets

Opt Out Rates Jump When People Know

Once people mobilize in their school communities, opt out rates are jumping from an average rate of 3.7% among schools surveyed, up to 48%, 63%, even 92%! It's patently clear that when families have access to this information, they take action. And when they take action, school districts notice. Here are two examples from many, many similar stories:

"Last night the Superintendent of the school district (more than 33,000 students) announced that for the first time ever an opt-out form was being mailed out to every junior and senior student. The Superintendent has received a ton of calls from local parents concerned about the right to opt-out and military recruitment...Office assistants have already reported that opt-out rates are way up, even before the sending of these forms."

"After educating myself on your website about the military recruitment opt out provision of the No Child Left Behind Act, I generated the opt-out form letter on your website for my son’s high school. The school was very grateful to have a parent request that district-wide notification be sent out about the “opt out” provision. They immediately sent out a letter to the parents of all the school’s juniors and seniors."

Online, In The Field, Opt Out Forms A'Flying

Not only are improved policies opting out thousands more students, but you have helped more than 34,000 kids opt out just through the Leave My Child Alone web site. Over 6,000 students in Miami were opted out through the field campaign of Mi Familia Vota, while other Leave My Child Alone partners on the ground distributed thousands of opt-out forms in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles.

Next Steps At LMCA: State Legislation, JAMRS Reform, Spring Planning

The opt out season is over in most school districts, but there's plenty of good things to do. Helping 16-to-25-year-olds opt out of the JAMRS database is one. Leaning on electeds to join Senators Clinton and Corzine in condemning the JAMRS database is another. We're planning for work at the district level next spring, and will keep you (lightly!) posted on developments with the illegal Pentagon database. We're part of an effort to get the kids off the lists, get opt out prominent, and ultimately, shut the dratted thing down. Read more about it here.

Finally, thank you for the energy you've put into this project so far. We enjoy any and all stories from your experiences -- please send to leavemychildalone@yahoo.com.

Progressive Democrat Issue 49: GETTING LOCAL AROUND THE NATION

This is how our coalition will be built: through out local action. Our success depends on you and your activism. There are many ways you can get active. Below I try to provide a good variety of options and urge you all to find a couple that suit you. These groups below are the way we can get our country back. If we don’t get involved we won’t win in 2005, 2006 and beyond. Joy and I are currently involved in two groups plus our own organizing efforts bringing different groups together and we are finding it a good boost to our social life. We are meeting cool people and it makes us get out a couple of times a month more than we would otherwise.

    Finding your local groups:

Democracy for America: Founded by Howard Dean, now run by his brother Jim Dean, this group is very effective at the local grass roots. Many think this is the future of the Democratic Party. I think this is partly true, though the neighborhood Dem party clubs will continue to be vital to our efforts as well. This is a group that you really should be active in either by joining a local meetup or starting one of your own.

Drinking Liberally: An informal, inclusive weekly Democratic drinking club. Raise your spirits while you raise your glass, and share ideas while you share a pitcher. Drinking Liberally gives like-minded, left-leaning individuals a place to talk politics. You don't need to be a policy expert and this isn't a book club - just come and learn from peers, trade jokes, vent frustration and hang out in an environment where it's not taboo to talk politics. Find your local drinking liberally group or start your own with a few buddies.

The Democratic Party: Now that Howard Dean is in the driver’s seat I am hoping the Democrats will become more effective on the local level. One of the main complaints against the DNC in the past couple of elections is that they didn’t help the local parties in most parts of the nation. If you go to the DNC website and find the “Get Local” pull down menu on the left, you can find your local Dem groups. I strongly urge you to get involved with your local Dem club since it is often these groups that actually do much of the footwork to win each district.

Critical Mass: Critical Mass is a bicyclist movement (NOT an organized group!) that holds weekly protests all over the world to protest pollution. Go here to find the closest Critical Mass action in your area (site covers ALL of North America).

Wellstone Action: Paul Wellstone started something in Minnesota and his death hasn’t stopped it. Wellstone’s family is continuing his work and expanding it throughout the nation. Wellstone Action trains activists and grassroots candidates and they did very well in the last election. I urge you to look into any nearby Wellstone Action events.

Common Cause: Common Cause is a major force in Progressive Politics. It was founded in 1970 (by a Republican, mind you!) to counter the influence of special interests in Washington. Today they work on many of the same issues I am trying to highlight. Look for your state’s Common Cause organization.

To find the League of Conservation Voters branch in your state, CLICK HERE. This is the group you should be involved with if the environment is your thing.

To find the NARAL branch in your state, CLICK HERE. This is the group you should be involved with if choice is your thing.

Finally I suggest Americans for Democratic Action. ADA is a progressive branch of the Democratic Party. Email: adaction@ix.netcom.com for info on local groups.
