The Progressive Democrat Newsletter grew out of the frustration of the 2004 election. Originally intended for New York City progressives, its readership is now national. Progressive Democrat Issue 49: THOUGHTS

What a month! DeLay’s indictment. Indictments in Ohio and Kentucky. And, Libby’s indictment this week. Republican corruption and treason is finally being noticed by the nation as a whole. Our efforts over months have been a small part of all this. All of these have been part of my efforts in this newsletter and my Target the Corrupt Republican blog.

If people like us had never written letters to Congress and the media, all of this would have been ignored, swept under the carpet. Our efforts are a small part of these indictments. But what do these indictments mean?

Of course they mean bad press for Bush and his Halliburton Republican party. Of course they mean the chance for Democrats in 2006 skyrockets, if we take advantage of the Republican weaknesses. But there is more and this is the most fundamental thing about these indictments.

It means America works. For 5 years now, with stolen elections, illegal invasions, the destruction of the Constitution, I have worried that American democracy was dying. I have been reminded over and over again of the end of the Roman Republic and the end of the Weimar Republic. The historical parallels for what we have been going through here in America were not encouraging. I was almost convinced that America was becoming a one-party dictatorship.

But these indictments, encompassing the ruling party in several states and Federally, shows that America is STILL governed by the rule of law. That is so important! That means American democracy has a damned good chance of surviving the un-American, anti-Constitution Republican attacks. It means even Tom DeLay at the height of his domination of America is subject to the law, whether he wants it or not. America is not yet broken. We can still save it. THAT is what these indictments mean. That is a wonderful thing, folks, and is well worth celebrating. So, take a moment to appreciate your efforts over the last 6 months and appreciate America and its seemingly resilient democracy.
