Mole's Progressive Democrat

The Progressive Democrat Newsletter grew out of the frustration of the 2004 election. Originally intended for New York City progressives, its readership is now national. For anyone who wants to be alerted by email whenever this newsletter is updated (usually weekly), please send your email address and let me know what state you live in (so I can keep track of my readership).

    Lancaster Co. PA Focus

This comes from Daily Kos and is a far more important effort than may be obvious. Union protesters need to eat and THIS is a key way to show solidarity.

Y'all are awesome. I've been told for years the amazingness of the Kos community but my friends in PA were floored by the generosity of yesterday. So, as any good organizer, I'm here to ask for a fantastic day two.

Can you buy a pizza or two, and ask your friends, family, and favorite canvass buddy to buy pizza, too?

    Thanks for the Pizza Solidarity!

Give Kasa's a call at 570-476-7636 and ask for the pizza to be delivered to the Union RV.

Kasa's is a fantastic family owner pizza shop- and they serve more than pizza. Salads, hoagies, chicken, seafood, pasta- and other yummy food too. If you are feeling adventurous, you can order something beyond pizza.

    Background on the Strike

"Pocono Medical Center (PMC) in East Stroudsburg, PA is forcing hundreds of frontline caregivers – members of SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania – out on a second unfair labor practice strike, Tuesday, March 15th through Thursday, March 17th, 2011. PMC workers previously conducted a one-day unfair labor practice strike on February 9th. Like workers in Wisconsin, Ohio, and elsewhere who are standing up for the right to collective bargaining and in support of middle class jobs, PMC workers – nursing assistants, environmental and food service workers, lab workers, clerical employees , skilled maintenance employees and others –are fighting back against an assault on democracy and workers’ rights in our state.
While all economic aspects of the contract have been settled, management continues to try and force workersat Pocono Medical Center to accept an open shop - a strategy both sides know is designed to weaken and ultimately break the union at PMC. PMC workers voted overwhelmingly in a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB)-certified election last fall to keep their “union shop,” but PMC management is refusing to honor the workers’ democratic vote, forcing the workers out on the picket line for a second time."

Please send these great folks a pizza or two!

I want to renew my emphasis on this because it is SO important. Progressives really need to express their opinions loud and clear to counter act the whining, lying and shouting of the Teabaggers: DEMOCRATS SPEAK OUT: (from the Lancaster County Democratic Party Website)

Writing a letter to the editor is a great opportunity to share your opinion, educate the public on issues, or promote your candidate. A well written, well timed letter to the editor can shift public opinion and influence votes.

On-line submissions and email are faster and allow letter writers to respond to issues quickly. Try to observe the parameters set by each newspaper, especially the length of the letter. Also be sure to include your name, address, email address and day and evening phone numbers. Newspapers almost always call to verify that you did indeed submit a "Letter to the Editor."

Always have someone else proof read your letter. We suggest that you construct the letter on a word processor, like Microsoft Word, and spell and grammar check. Try to stay positive. Negative attacks do not persuade anyone to vote for your candidate. See Tips for Writing a Letter to the Editor.

When writing in support of a candidate, please copy your letter to your candidate's campaign. Campaigns often reprint letters that support them or their point of view. Submitting your letter directly to a campaign avoids any allegations of improper use by the print media. See our Candidates page. Contacts for local and Congressional campaigns are listed there.
