Mole's Progressive Democrat

The Progressive Democrat Newsletter grew out of the frustration of the 2004 election. Originally intended for New York City progressives, its readership is now national. For anyone who wants to be alerted by email whenever this newsletter is updated (usually weekly), please send your email address and let me know what state you live in (so I can keep track of my readership).

    Manhattan, NY Focus

The latest corruption in New York:

Every street plowed?...Bloomberg's neglect had some serious consequences: The aftermath... death by neglect...funny how THIS worked (blatant corruption?): Bloomberg's block one of first to be plowed

State GOP Vice Chair Charged with Shoplifting...yep, the Greedy Oil Party isn't satisfied with looting the American economy on a large scale...they have to stoop to petty theft as well.

Top Dems collude to line Parkside's pockets...further evidence this state needs to be seriously cleaned up. Republicans, Working Families Party, Democrats, Conervative Party, Independence Party...all are far too tolerant of corruption. And voters are too tolerant of the fact their political parties are corrupt. See below for ideas on cleaning up the state.

And speaking of corruption: CityTime consultants busted

And of course, Pedro Espada, Jr. & Son Indicted On Federal Embezzlement, Theft Charges...Something else that needs to be investigated, and as far as I know I am the only one who reported on it, is the fact that Espada himself and some of his thugs may well have broken the law on election day, with voter intimidation and voter tampering. Of course the sleaze lost anyway!

What can we do against this widespread corruption? Well I highlight something below, but here are a couple of other suggestions:

Hell yeah: Corrupt pols should lose pensions...hit the corrupt bastards where it hurts!

Want to change Albany? Start with the way we finance elections.

Wake up folks. This city and state are becoming infamous for corruption. From mayor Mike Bloomberg to so-called Public Advocate Bill de Blasio to Party Boss Vito Lopez to the State Senate Leaders John Sampson and Pedro Espada, the levels of corruption is disgusting. It is time to clean up New York...

    CLEAN UP NEW YORK POLITICS:
GRASSROOTS NYC: This is an organization founded by fellow Daily Gotham blogger and DFNYC activist Dan Jacoby.

GrassrootsNYC was created to provide a new method for generating real government reform in New York City. Instead of the old-fashioned method of fighting for reform (and usually not getting much done), GrassrootsNYC aims to leverage the power of tens of thousands of reform-minded New Yorkers to force our government to work for us - the way our Founding Fathers intended government to work.

This is a real chance for you to get involved in reforming our political system from the bottom up. To find out more, visit GrassrootsNYC's website and sign up for updates. This could be one of the most important groups you can get involved with if you want to see NYC politics cleaned up.

And let's not forget Bloomberg's corrupt bargain with WalMart, sacrificing women's rights and small businesses for WalMart. And we need to stop him.

    KEEP WAL-MART OUT OF NYC:

Bloomerg and the right wing New York Post want to help Wal-Mart open up in NYC even though Wal-Mart has been shown to deliberately destroy small businesses, use illegal immigrant labor paying them slave wages, and treating their workers badly.

I don't mind big chain stores. I like IKEA and CostCo and Trader Joe's in particular. But Wal-Mart has been shown to be bad for communities they open up in.

Wal-Mart has a gender discrimination suit against them still active: Meet the Woman Behind the Walmart Gender Discrimination Suit

    Downtown Independent Democrats
    http://didnyc.org/

Since the 1970s, the Downtown Independent Democrats has been the voice for residents of lower Manhattan in the politics of the Democratic Party. Born from the reform movement that overturned many decades of party-boss rule in lower Manhattan, D.I.D. continues to support progressive government and issues, helps elect honest and intelligent public officials, and supports deserving and qualified judicial candidates. We serve as a direct conduit to local elected officials, organize forums to introduce prospective candidates to the voters, and then organize support behind our endorsed candidates.

Our endorsements of candidates are always made at open public meetings, often after lively debate and discussion of the issues with the candidates themselves. We also provide printed and online voter information, sponsor get-out-the-vote drives and register new voters.

D.I.D. fought for (and won) loft legislation, moderate-income housing, small business protection, better schools, better parks, and neighborhoods made safer with a better quality of life for our families.

Our members actively serve on PTAs, the community boards, Community Emergency Response Teams, advocacy groups, as well as civic and neighborhood associations.

The club's district covers one of the largest land areas of any club in Manhattan. Neighborhoods represented by the club include Battery Park City, the Financial District, TriBeCa, Hudson Square, SoHo, NoHo, the South Village, the Washington Square area, Washington Square Village, Silver Towers, Village View, and parts of the Lower East Side and the East Village, as well as Governors Island.
