New York Focus: Green Power Switch

Now more than ever America needs Green Power. Green Power means domestic energy and that means domestic jobs. Green Power means less money going to Iran, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela and more staying right here in America. Green Power means cleaner air, cleaner water, less carbon emission and a stronger economy. And it is something we ALL can be a part of.

There are several programs in New York involved in helping energy customers switch to green energy, including landfill methane gas use (which reduces methane emissions from landfills while generating energy), wind power and solar power. The cost is generally less than 3 cents per kilowatt-hour more than you currently pay for energy. By participating you contribute to reducing carbon emissions, cleaning up New York's environment, and stimulating New York's economy. Three important ways of helping your local community, local environment and local economy, all for less than 2 cents per kilowatt-hour of energy you use. In fact, buying green energy is cheaper in Wisconsin than in most states. When my wife and I made a similar switch in New York, we barely noticed the difference in our energy bill. We also switched to compact fluorescent bulbs at the same time and the energy savings reduced our bill by one-third even with the small increase from buying green energy. Together, we reduced our carbon footprint by about 30% while overall saving money. I highly recommend the switch.

    ConEdison Solutions

This is how my wife and I signed up for 100% wind power.

Green power is energy that is generated in an environmentally sustainable manner using renewable forms of energy like small hydro, wind and solar power. The use of these alternative sources of energy is an important part of the fight against climate change. As a consumer, your support of green power helps to promote and increase the use of green energy, thereby reducing pollution and the dependence on fossil fuels...

Electricity generation is not only the biggest contributor to climate change in this country, but it's also responsible for a host of environmental ills, from the emission of dangerous metals like mercury and selenium that accumulate in plants and animals, to respiratory issues, to the decimation of wilderness areas to make room for mountaintop removal coal mining. Renewable energy is clean and holds the promise to wean us off foreign energy supplies, reduce our energy costs, and create innumerable jobs. But right now, it's only 2% of our generation in this country. By purchasing renewable energy, you're helping build the market for new renewables and sending a signal that the demand for new renewables is growing. It's the fastest way you can help transform the electricity sector.

    BlueRock Energy Go Green:

This plan is 100% based on short term market prices in electricity markets. Price will vary each month based on market conditions and the amount of green energy you select. Prices will increase during rising market conditions and decrease during market declines.
You can choose to purchase 50% or 100% of your annual electricity usage in clean, renewable energy. Green renewable energy comes from 100% New York State generation sources. Sources include wind, biomass, and hydro-electric.

Renewable Energy Adder – The additional unit cost for renewable energy is $.008/kWh. For a residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours per month, the monthly cost would be $8 and annual cost is $64.

Note: The additional cost for renewable energy is included in your BLUE100 price. Renewable Energy is a premium product and costs more than regular electricity. The good news is our price is substantially lower than most suppliers.

    Energy Cooperative of New York

The Energy Cooperative of America, a member-owned, not-for-profit, cooperative is, with support from NYSERDA, offering “renewable electricity” to commercial & residential accounts in the National Grid, Rochester Gas & Electric and NYSEG territories.

For the first time in New York State history, as a result of energy deregulation, it is now possible to support a “clean” source of energy with the many environmental and economic advantages that renewable energy sources have to offer.

This program uses National Grid, RG&E and NYSEG to do the billing, so it is very convenient. You get the same bill you’ve always gotten (with the Energy Cooperative energy on it) and you write the same check to you’ve always written.

This program is an opportunity to make your contribution to a hopeful future, free from: smog, acid rain and climate changing greenhouse gasses. By casting your “consumer vote” in support of renewable energy, you will be both creating a market demand for cleaner energy and encouraging developers to build more renewable generation facilities in New York State.

As a group, we can combine the buying power of all our members to “lead by example” in support of energy sources that do not damage the environment. Our Federal Government has decided not to support the greenhouse gas emissions target set by the Kyoto Treaty. Someone has to provide leadership on this issue. Why not us?
