Mole's Progressive Democrat

The Progressive Democrat Newsletter grew out of the frustration of the 2004 election. Originally intended for New York City progressives, its readership is now national. For anyone who wants to be alerted by email whenever this newsletter is updated (usually weekly), please send your email address and let me know what state you live in (so I can keep track of my readership).

Iowa Focus: Save the Iowa Power Fund

As I have written in this newsletter, Republicans blocked money for alternative energy in South Dakota, costing South Dakota, litterally, THOUSANDS of jobs. Now Republicans want to do the same in Iowa. Republicans insist on supporting the oil and coal industry but not Green Energy even though Green Energy promises the next jobs boom.

    From the Iowa Democratic Party:

    Save the Iowa Power Fund

Despite making Iowa a national leader in clean energy production, Iowa House Republicans are already drawing their knives and preparing to kill the program they feel has “no value to Iowans” and Governor-elect Branstad called a “colossal failure.”

Since Governor Culver signed the Power Fund into law in 2007, Iowa’s clean energy economy has taken off. Since 2006 the amount of energy Iowa receives from renewable sources has jumped from 5 percent to 20 percent, while companies from across the world have leveraged Power Fund grants to create Iowa jobs.

In addition to receiving national attention, the Power Fund also has bipartisan support within Iowa, including Republican Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey who said,

“It is vital that we maintain our leadership status on renewable fuels, and the Power Fund plays an important role in the continued development of the industry here in Iowa.”

Call your State Representative and Senator. (Find them here.) Tell them Iowans want clean renewable energy as one of the engines of our new economy.

Take this a step further. In all seriousness, Green Energy is vital for America's economic recovery and Republicans have to know Iowans want economic recovery. Here are the email addresses of some local media outlets. Write to them to express your opinion:
