Arizona Focus: Green Power Switch

Now more than ever America needs Green Power. Green Power means domestic energy and that means domestic jobs. Green Power means less money going to Iran, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela and more staying right here in America. Green Power means cleaner air, cleaner water, less carbon emission and a stronger economy. And it is something we ALL can be a part of.

Here are a couple of programs to help Arizona residents make the switch to green energy. The cost is generally less than 3 cents per kilowatt-hour more than you currently pay for energy. By participating you contribute to reducing carbon emissions, cleaning up Arizona's environment, and stimulating Arizona's economy. Three important ways of helping your local community, local environment and local economy, all for less than 2 cents per kilowatt-hour of energy you use. When my wife and I made a similar switch in New York, we barely noticed the difference in our energy bill. We also switched to compact fluorescent bulbs at the same time and the energy savings reduced our bill by one-third even with the small increase from buying green energy. Together, we reduced our carbon footprint by about 30% while overall saving money. I highly recommend the switch.


Arizona Public Service's Green Choice Rates:

When you sign up for Green Choice Rates you'll be using energy generated from a variety of renewable resources including solar, wind, geothermal, biogas and biomass. It is an easy and affordable way to make use of renewable resources, reduce pollution and ensure a better quality of life for all Arizonans. APS Green Choice Rates are available in three flexible options:

Green Choice Rates Block Option (GPS-1) Sign up

*Choose the amount of energy - in 100 kilowatt (kWh) blocks - you want to come from renewable resources each month.
*Each kWh is priced at a premium of $0.004 plus tax, in addition to your normal monthly charges.
*Your Green Choice charges stay the same each month.

Green Choice Rates Percentage Option (GPS-2) Sign up

*Select the percentage of your monthly energy use you want to come from renewable resources - 10% (non-residential only), 35%, 50% or 100%.*
*Each kWh purchased is priced at a premium of $0.004 plus tax, in addition to your normal monthly charges.
* Your Green Choice charges vary each month based on the amount of energy you use.

Green Power Block Option for Special Events (GPS-3) Sign up

* Available to APS customers requesting green power for a single event that may cover multiple days or venues.
* Choose the amount of energy -- in 100 kilowatt (kWh) blocks -- you want to come from renewable resources.
* Each kWh is priced at a premium of $0.004 plus tax, in addition to your normal charges.
* Minimum purchase shall be $500.00 per transaction.

*For customers who want their renewable energy generated only by solar resources, but are not interested in installing a solar PV system.

*You can choose 50 percent or 100 percent of your monthly usage.*
*Your Green Choice charges vary each month based on the amount of energy you use.

EarthWise Energy: available to Salt River Project customers.

When you sign up for SRP EarthWise™ Energy, you'll be joining in the effort to support clean energy. It is a voluntary program that SRP customers can join for as little as $3 per month, with 100% of dollars helping to build solar projects for non-profit organizations in the Valley. It's a convenient, cost effective way you can make a difference. The monthly fee will be added as a line item to your bill. The amount you pay SRP for your regular electricity usage remains the same.

EarthWise Energy is available in $3-per-month increments. This amount will be added to your monthly bill. You can choose $3 additional per month, or $6, $9 or $12. The amount you pay SRP for your regular electricity usage remains the same.

Premiums received from the SRP EarthWise Energy program help build SRP environmental projects in the community such as solar energy systems at the Phoenix Zoo and Desert Botanical Garden.
