This will be an important opportunity to present our "Real Voices for Change" photo petition. We will also share MoveOn's objectives, including the need to solve our nation's economic crisis with clean energy jobs.

This event will include a rally (bring your own sign on message: Clean Energy Jobs!). While a small group of council members are meeting with John Campbell's staff, the other council members will continue with the rally. Please let me know if you can bring an extra sign!

"The Potluck for Progressives" is a group organized for the purpose of bringing together like minded people on a monthly basis to break bread and talk about crucial issues affecting the community and the world. At each meeting, people interested in peace, social justice, labor, and the environment gather to exchange ideas, talk about successes, plan actions, or just engage in a friendly discussion with one another. Featured Speaker: 1:30 - 2:30 P.M. Tam Thanh Nguyen, a Chief Nurse representative at a local Orange County hospital and a member of the newly formed United American Nurses-National Nurses Organizing Committee (AFL-CIO), will deliver an informative presentation with video and other media about the need of establishing a universal, single-payer health care system within the United States. Nguyen will compare our current "free market, consumer-driven model" -- dominated by big insurance companies, HMOs, and other corporations who make billions of dollars in profit each year by denying or limiting quality health care to millions of sick and injured people -- with a universal, single-payer health care system, a model used by most industrialized countries. We'll look at the numerous benefits adopting a single-payer health care system would offer and review some of the legislation currently pending in both the U.S. Congress and the California State legislature.

Featured Film: 7:30 - 8:45 P.M. We will be screening "Capitalism Hits the Fan," a very provocative lecture by Dr. Richard Wolff, a University of Massachusetts Economics Professor, who breaks down the root causes of today's economic crisis showing how it was decades in the making and in fact reflects seismic failures within the structures of American-style capitalism itself. Wolff traces the source of the economic crisis to the 1970s, when wages began to stagnate and American workers were forced into a dysfunctional spiral of borrowing and debt that ultimately exploded in the mortgage meltdown. By placing the current crisis within this larger historical and systemic frame, Wolff argues convincingly that the proposed government "bailouts," stimulus packages, and calls for increased market regulation will not be enough to address the real causes of the crisis, in the end suggesting that far more fundamental change will be necessary to avoid future catastrophes.
