Mole's Progressive Democrat

Bills to watch: 2009 Nevada Legislative Session

From Daily Kos comes this rundown of the 2010 elections in Nevada:

Endangered Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid dodged two major bullets this past year (well, he helped stop one of them) and looks quite a bit better for reelection than he did a year ago. From a purely electoral standpoint, he's seen several strokes of good luck of late; since November 4, pretty much everything has come up Reid in Nevada.

It was widely rumored in 2007 that Reid's polling numbers against Republican Rep. Jon Porter were looking very bad - indeed, Research 2000 polled Porter against Reid after the election and found Reid ahead 46-40.

This being the case, Reid recruited Democrat Dina Titus into the NV-03 congressional race (after candidate Robert Daskas dropped out) specifically to get rid of Porter. It worked, as Titus took out the incumbent in November, defeating him 48-42.

On the same day, two other possible Reid opponents - State Senators Bob Beers and Joe Heck - both lost their own bids for reelection.

This left Lieutenant Governor Brian Krolicki as the likeliest challenger - until Krolicki was indicted on four felony counts of misappropriating state funds.

So we're now back to a weakened Porter as the leading Republican candidate. Reid is hardly super popular in Nevada - or among the netroots - but he's now favored to win reelection.

Democrats, meanwhile, will have their eyes on taking out woefully unpopular Governor Jim Gibbons (having taken the Nevada Senate in fine style in November). Gibbons may in fact receive a GOP primary challenge from Second District Rep. Dean Heller, who would be twice the candidate Gibbons would in 2010. For the Democrats, there's no presumptive nominee since Titus - the 2006 nominee - was elected to Congress. Several politicians will no doubt consider the race, probably including State Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley.

Nevada Lt. Governor Indicted on Four Felony Counts! Another corrupt Republican destined for conviction? And this is the guy who wanted to run for Senate against Reid!
