    The Trans-Caucus War

The most ignored story off the day, ignored even on Daily Kos as the Edwards "scandal" hits, is the new war between Russia and Georgia. I don't know how much I can inform people about this, but it is the latest war in the trans-Caucus flashpoint that perhaps you remember includes Chechnya.

Today, Russian tanks invaded Georgia territory to support a break away Republican called South Ossetia. Georgia considered this an act of war and there is currently fierce fighting between Russian and Georgian forces within South Ossetia.

This is the same region where Russia is dealing with breakaway republics, including North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Daghastan and Chechnya. It is possible this skirmish could explode into a full trans-Caucus war, one that has been brewing for a decade and involves many ethnic, religious and political conflicts. I don't have a lot to say about this conflict except it has been long in coming, whether it was a third Chechen war or a Russia/Georgia conflict or some other conflict or a mix of them all. I also want to note that in the past al-Qaeda used these trans-Caucus conflicts to its benefit and I suspect they will do so again. Osama bin Laden got a big boost from the Chechen and Daghastan conflicts and he could get a boost from this one. I also want to take this opportunity to refer to a book review I wrote in 2007 of a book called Grief of my Heart, written by a Chechen doctor who lived through both Chechen wars.

One thing I will note is that the Russians immediately made the same mistake that led to their defeat (yes...I said it...their DEFEAT) in the first Chechen war. They went in with largely unsupported armor. This mistake cost the Germans the battle of Stalingrad in WW II, and cost the Russians the first Chechen war. Unsupported armor in an urban setting is a sitting duck for a well organized infantry. The Russians learned that lesson in Chechnya and sent in a more mixed force in the second Chechen war, which they won, though without solving the conflict.

So far the Georgians don't seem to have succeeded in taking advantage of this error by the Russians. Maybe South Ossetian rebels are supporting the Russian armor. That would be a good solution for the Russian forces. But so far it is hard to tell what is up.

From here I borrow from my Greif of my Heart review.

Dagestan Chechnya Ingushetia North Ossetia Georgia Armenia Azerbaijan...South Ossetia

The Caucus Mountains dominate these nations, would-be nations, and territories. This has been a crossroads for millennia, the meeting point of large ethnic groups, religions and civilizations from the earliest moments of history.

The nations, would-be nations and territories I list above barely register in the minds of Americans. Few in America had heard of them, except maybe Armenia, until the fall of the Soviet Union. After that, these names, if they registered at all in our minds, became symbolic of Balkanization on a scale that would make the Balkans blush, with split off movements from split off movements. After 9/11, Chechnya and Dagestan became places where we thought al-Qaeda operated, a battleground, training ground and testing ground for international terrorism.

And that is probably all you know about this region.

Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia in many ways have histories that go back before recorded history. These were a part of the rise of civilization, sometimes centrally, more often peripherally.

Armenia has been proposed as the original location of the Garden of Eden, or, more properly, the place that inspired the myth of the Garden of Eden. This was a place battled over by some of the earliest empires known: the Hittites, the Mitanni, Urartu. It was fought over by the Romans and Parthians, then the Romans and Persians. Armenia was the first nation on earth to establish Christianity as its official religion.

It was once believed that the natives of the Caucus nation of Georgia were descended from the ancient Cimmerians (a people immortalized and fictionalized in the Conan the Barbarian books). When the Mycenaean Greeks, Jason and the Argonauts, landed at Colchis looking for the Golden Fleece, they had arrived in Georgia.

Azerbaijanis may also be descended from ancient Cimmerians and their distant relatives the Scythians, forming a people called Albanians (not related to the Balkan Albanians!).

The South Caucuses were the Northernmost limits of the earliest civilizations and were the place where the nomadic cultures of the Steppes, Cimmerians, Scythians, Saramatians, Huns, Turks, Mongols, etc. met the great empires of Mesopotamia, Assyria, Babylon, Hatti, Parthia, Persia, etc. The North Caucuses, including Dagestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia, and North Ossetia, were the southernmost edge of the steppe, where steppe nomads met the mountain tribes of the Caucuses before invading the empires to the South.

What fascinates me most about these North Caucus people is that they would include the descendents of the core region of a medieval empire of Khazaria, the Jewish Empire. It is quite possible that Ashkenazi Jews share ancestors with modern Chechens, since Chechnya was on the Southern edge of Khazaria, the largest Jewish state ever to have existed, while the origins of the Ashkinazim would have been at the Western and Northern end of the Khazar territory. Interestingly, I noticed that some Chechen names struck me as characteristically Jewish. The Chechen name Khava, for example seems much the same as Chava, a common Jewish name. That could be either coincidental, or due to similarities in Muslim and Jewish names. But I don't know of any Muslims named Chava!

At the NYU medical center, I sometimes hang out and drink with some Russian friends. They were from all over Russia: Moscow, Petersburg, Siberia, even from Russia via emigration to Israel. They were mostly liberals, hating Bush unlike the older generation of Russians who moved to America who idolize Reagan and the Republican Party. Many had opposed the wars in Afghanistan and Chechnya that were the Vietnam wars of the Soviet Union and the Russian Federation, respectively. And yet, they had absorbed some of the semi-propaganda that the Chechens were all bandits, criminals and fighters. There is a grain of truth in this, as there is in all stereotypes, but only a grain. Of course most Chechens are much like anyone else, though they do come from a long warrior tradition, much like the Apache, the Japanese, the Zulu, the Mongols, the Germans.

The book Grief of my Heart tells the story of Chechens caught in the way of a Russia that needed to exert its strength in the ruins of the Soviet Empire. It tells the story from the point of view of the Chechens and the Russian friends and acquaintances they had. At times I felt some of the rougher spots of the Chechens were smoothed over a bit much: al-Qaeda involvement in the conflict, the tradition of kidnapping brides, the bloodier actions of some Chechen fighters. But overall it is a balanced and amazing story from the point of view of the real people behind the "bandit" stereotype that the Soviet, and then Russian, governments slapped on the Chechens.

I think it is important to keep in mind the Russian need to exert its strength in the ruins of the Soviet Empire now that it has picked a fight with Georgia over Georgia's own version of Chechnya: South Ossetia.

I end with a quote from Grief of my Heart, a quote that shows the long term effects war has on societies, and one that the trans-Caucuses will be dealing with for decades to come:

"You're dead!" shouted a small boy to his friend who crouched behind a burned-out car on the street.

"No! I killed you first. Fall down!"

I stopped in my tracks. I counted fifteen kids of all ages, including girls, playing war, oblivious to the danger all around them.

In the background you could hear the firing of real guns. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. They had lived with war so long, that was all they knew.

I couldn't get those kids out of my mind. If someone didn't get them off the streets, they could grow into little animals with no knowledge of right or wrong; no traditions to guide them. Bang! Bang! You're dead! That is all they would know.

That is what Georgia, Russia and Ossetia are condemning the Caucuses to.

    Anthrax

I discussed this a little last week, but I want to continue the discussion. To review: Bruce E. Ivins, the very scientist who was being used by the government to analyze the anthrax laden powder turned out to be the number on suspect in the anthrax terror plot. Bruce Ivins committed suicide last week, reportedly overdosing with Tylenol with Codeine. It is not easy to overdose on Tylenol with Codeine. In fact, the codeine probably was incidental. Tylenol itself will destroy your liver if you take a large overdose. Is this what he did? If so, he would have died slowly and in agony. I don't see him choosing that way out.

Why has it taken so long to focus in on Ivins? Why did the government spend so much time investigating Steven Hatfill, the man they hounded as "Dr. Anthrax" who turned out so obviously innocent that the government had to pay out $5.82 million in a legal settlement, an almost unheard of development.

Over at Daily Kos it has been pointed out that Ivins WAS viewed as a suspect way back in 2001, and this was written about by none other than FOX NEWS. From that 2001 Fox News article:

... in an e-mail obtained by FOX News, scientists at Fort Detrick openly discussed how the anthrax powder they were asked to analyze after the attacks was nearly identical to that made by one of their colleagues.

"Then he said he had to look at a lot of samples that the FBI had prepared ... to duplicate the letter material," the e-mail reads. "Then the bombshell. He said that the best duplication of the material was the stuff made by [name redacted]. He said that it was almost exactly the same ... his knees got shaky and he sputtered, 'But I told the General we didn't make spore powder!'"

Why did it take so long? ABC News was desperately trying to help the government pin the blame on Iraq, an absurd assertion, as Glen Greenwald discussed last week in his very extensive analysis.

    To quote Greenwald:

Much more important than the general attempt to link the anthrax to Islamic terrorists, there was a specific intent -- indispensably aided by ABC News -- to link the anthrax attacks to Iraq and Saddam Hussein. In my view, and I've written about this several times and in great detail to no avail, the role played by ABC News in this episode is the single greatest, unresolved media scandal of this decade. News of Ivins' suicide, which means (presumably) that the anthrax attacks originated from Ft. Detrick, adds critical new facts and heightens how scandalous ABC News' conduct continues to be in this matter.

Was this desperation to find an excuse to invade Iraq (aided and abetted by ABC) the reason attention was diverted from Ivins? Did Ivins himself (as the man who was helping to analyze the anthrax laden powder) try to frame Hatfill? Isn't it strange that Fox News may have had it right, yet later was willing to jump on the invade Iraq bandwagon?

What if it had been George Bush who had been targeted instead of journalists and Democratic Congressmen? Would the government investigation have been better? Funny how the investigation into attacks on journalists and Democrats gets bungled for years and misused as an excuse to invade Iraq. What if it HAD been someone outside the government establishment, someone with an ethnic name? Don't you think the investigation would have been far more aggressive?

Another Daily Kos article compared two terrorst investigations, that of Dr. Ivins and that of Jose Pedilla. To quote:

We have in Mr. Padilla a man merely accused of preliminarily plotting something that by all accounts he never had the capacity to accomplish by any flight of fancy... subsequently wrongfully imprisoned and tortured for over six years.

If the FBI is to be believed, Dr. Ivins not only plotted but actually succeeded in killing five people and terrorizing an entire nation. Granted, it can be argued that they wound up spending about $6 million in recompense to the wrong guy, Dr. Hatfill, whom they chased for four years... but, again, if they are to be believed, they've been hot on the trail of Dr. Ivins for the last 18 months. Accounts from Dr. Ivins neighbors confirm that the "black SUVs" were well-known in the neighborhood for quite some time.

In summary, here's the irony, or massive cognitive dissonance, if you will:
Lightweight, inept plotter is swept up and tortured for six years; highly intelligent, successful mass murderer is closely observed for 18 months and subsequently commits suicide.

What if the government scientist had been named Pedilla and had darker skin? Was racism involved? Or was it simply that Ivins had better resources to defend himself? Or was there a deep need to cover up the involvement of a US government scientist in the number one bioterrorist attack to date?

Finally, why is the FBI so eager to drop the investigation now that Ivins is dead. As reported in Daily Kos, this is absurd. On Kos they quote Dr. Alan Pearson, the Director of the Biological and Chemical Weapons Control Program at the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation:

"The FBI must not let the death of Bruce Ivins deter it from completing a full and thorough investigation of the attacks," said Pearson. "The chance to prove Ivins' guilt before a court of law has been lost, but the need for a thorough investigation and a full accounting to the American people remains." CNN reported today that the FBI will soon close the case "because a threat no longer exists."

Pearson says that the number one question still to determine is whether Ivins was responsible for the attacks and, if so, whether he acted alone and with complete secrecy. "If Ivins was indeed responsible for the attacks, did he have any assistance? Did anyone else at the Army lab or elsewhere have any knowledge of his activities prior to, during, or shortly after the anthrax attacks?" questioned Pearson. "The FBI must see this investigation through to completion."

    ...

"It appears increasingly likely that the only significant bioterrorism attack in history may have originated from right within the biodefense program of our own country," said Pearson. "The implications for our understanding of the bioterrorism threat and for our entire biodefense strategy and enterprise are potentially profound."

We tried blaming Iraq, but the attack came from within our own biodefense program, our own country, our own government. And that same government has bungled the investigation from the start, partly in its eagerness to blame Iraq as an excuse to investigate. And that same government is now ready to drop the investigation now that the number one suspect has committed suicide, reportedly in a rather unusual, unlikely manner. I am not conspiracy theorist, but what the hell can we think? There clearly is a great deal that has remained hidden and that the government continues to want to hide. I believe that a lone gunman killed JFK. I believe that al-Qaeda carried out 9/11 without complicity from the Bush Administration (though I do blame the Bush Administration for incompetence in the matter). What am I to believe about the Anthrax attacks that came from within our government, targeting journalists and Democrats and which were used to bolster the many lame excuses for invading Iraq? A cover up seems clear. What is behind that cover up is beyond me for now.

SPECIAL ALASKA FOCUS: Diane Benson For Congress

I want to re-emphasize something I wrote before: my enthusiastic endorsement of Diane Benson for Congress in the August 26th primary and on to the general election. This is a repeat of a diary I wrote back in March. My support for Diane Benson has only grown since then.

I met Diane Benson, Congressional Candidate in Alaska, about a month ago and was very impressed. But I only got to hear her speak as a candidate tonight. Again I was impressed. Diane is a genuine American who has worked hard all her life to get an education and to better the life of her son. Often she and her son have worked hard for our country and for their community. She has the confidence of someone who worked their way through school driving trucks while raising her son. She has the confidence of a woman who worked in the male dominated workers camp on the Alaskan pipeline. She has the confidence of someone who has had to work for everything, being given nothing easily. The contrast with the spoiled brat who inhabits the White House is about as striking as you can get.

Among those who came out for Diane was as diverse a group of Democrats you can find. Avid Hillary supporters rubbing shoulders with avid Obama supporters, both writing checks for Diane and THANKING her for her running. Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney was among the strongest voices supporting Diane with both enthusiasm and a bit of awe. Also there were former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark, our next Public Advocate Norm Siegel, Captain Jon Soltz, Veteran of Kosovo and the Iraq War and founder of VoteVets.org, fellow Daily Gotham writer Dan Jacoby, and City Council Candidate Steve Behar (if I left anyone out, please let me know!). I also saw members of two Brooklyn Democratic clubs, IND and CBID, and the current CBID president, Chris Owens, was on the host committee. Quite an interesting collection of Democrats.

Captain Jon Soltz introduced Diane Benson. Soltz has an amazing story of his own, volunteering for military service as part of his dedication to both America and Israel, serving honorably and bravely, only to discover when he returned home that the very government that sent him to war treated him like dirt. His discovery of the lies that got us into Iraq and his realization that Bush ran away from the fight with al-Qaeda, the enemy that attacked us, and his witnessing the closing of VA hospitals by Bush inspired Soltz to found Vote Vets.org Jon Soltz summed up George Bush this way: "This guy [George Bush] is the worst commander-in-chief in the history of our armed forces."

Soltz's introduction of Diane Benson was about the most heartfelt and passionate endorsement I have heard. This is because Diane Benson is running for office precisely on the same issues that politicized Soltz: the blundered Iraq War, the failure to secure America, the neglect of our soldiers, the neglect of our veterans. There was a bond between the two that went beyond what any of us who have not experienced first hand the pain of this war can quite understand.

Among the things that really stuck in my mind was the Republican neglect of our troops. Diane described having to buy her son military socks so he'd have some to wear. What, America can't afford to properly clothe our troops? Is THIS what Republicans mean by "supporting the troops." We know the Republican dominated government failed to provide adequate body armor and forced soldiers to pay their own way to visit home on leave (until people like Al Franken and Air America Radio embarassed them into changing their policy by raising frequent flyer miles to give to our troops). But they didn't even give our troops adequate socks??? And Jon Soltz reminded us about Bush closing VA hospitals, the series of events that led to Soltz becoming politicized and forming VoteVets.org. Diane has been dedicating herself to helping our troops, greeting them when they get home, visiting them in the hospital, helping them adapt back to life in the states...before they all too often get sent back. The lies surrounding the war, the failure of our leadership, the neglect of our soldiers, the neglect of our veterans...THESE are the reasons Diane Benson is running.

It's about the WAR, stupid. We are mired in a war that was based on lies, which has been full of blunders, STILL lacks an exit strategy and in which victory is not even defined. Diane Benson knows first hand the cost this war has had on our soldiers, our Veterans, and their families. Her son, Sgt Latseen Benson, served in Iraq. He volunteered after the 9/11 attacks, something that struck a chord with us New Yorkers because he chose to serve because of the attacks on our city. He was scheduled to come home when he was stop-lossed (yet another abuse our troops have to suffer at the hands of a callous, negligent government...also called the "backdoor draft"). Thirteen days after he should have come home, he was severely injured, filled with shrapnel and losing both his legs and part of a hand.

At the center of all the blunders in the Iraq war, at the center of all the neglect of our soldiers and veterans, is George W. Bush and his allies, John McCain and Don Young. And again, Diane Benson and her family saw first hand the callousness, the utter lack of any sense of empathy shown by George Bush. When her son was recovering from severe injuries while serving in Iraq, he was fitted with prosthetic legs to replace those that got blown off. While learning to use them, and while still recovering from his other injuries, he remained mostly in a wheelchair. George Bush came to visit the hospital where he was recovering. In an elaborate photo op where the wounded soldiers were practicly mere props, her son was lined up with the others, standing on prothetic limbs he wasn't yet used to. Bush came down the line, shaking hands with these soldiers he had sent to war with no logic, no reason, no plan...no body armor...Shaking hands with Sgt Latseen Benson, George Bush asked, "So how are those legs working out for you?"

Face to face with a brave soldier who had lost his legs serving in Bush's Big Blunder in Iraq, George Bush asks, "So how are those legs working out for you?"

Just in case you forgot, let's remember what Bush was doing at that age:

The fury Benson and her son felt at that insult from the Chickenhawk in Chief was quite obvious as Diane told the story.

THIS is why Diane Benson is running: because the Republicans who are sending our troops ill equipped into a war with no purpose or goal don't even care about those troops. They are pawns in a game about oil and props for photo ops and their injuries boil down to: So how are those prosthetic limbs that replace the legs you were born with and got blown off working for you?

Ending the war and holding our politicians accountable for the blunders are focal points of Diane's campaign. But her campaign is about even more than that. It is about values and service. She comes from a Native American tradition of strong family and community values, and the record of service Diane and her son have puts us all to shame. Latseen gave all he could serving in Iraq. Diane has served her community all her life, volunteering with senior citizens at Ketchikan Hospital at the age of 12, and although often homeless, worked a variety of social service oriented jobs with the underprivileged and the elderly until she took a position with the Fairbanks Native Association. She has worked to stop child abuse, was a proud member of Local 959 - Teamster Union, serves on Anchorage Chamber of Commerce’s Military Appreciation Committee, on the Healing Racism Steering Committee, was a two term President of the Alaska Native Sisterhood, Camp 87- Anchorage, and is an active member of the National Organization of Women.

I think simply put, Diane Benson is the ideal woman to send to Congress from any state...Alaska just happens to be lucky enough to have her running. By contrast, the Republican incumbent is a wealthy lawyer with no understanding of working class or middle class Americans, no record of support for our troops or Veterans, and is perhaps best known for a record of corruption as long as they get. So the choice Alaska has is between an out of touch lawyer best known for corruption, or Diane Benson, known for her genuine record of service to her community, to Alaksa, and to American's troops and Veterans. If you want to help elect Diane to Congress, you can donate at my Alaska Act Blue site. If you really want to shake up Congress, sending a tough, working class woman and mother of a disabled Iraq War Veteran is the way to do it. For those who haven't had a chance to meet her, let me introduce you:

SPECIAL NYC FOCUS: A Referendum on Mayoral Control of the Schools

This comes from a blogger I seldom agree with, but on this issue I solidly agree with. From Room 8 (a blog I seldom agree with, but do on this issue...)

“There’s no question that mayoral control has done really positive great things.”----Dan Squadron

“We need to get parents back in the process in a real way; we need to empower them. I feel the legislature was mislead by this Mayor…”---State Senator Marty Connor

As Mike Bloomberg moves towards creating a Charter Commission to extend his tenure in the Mayor’s Office to lives in being plus 21 years, by expanding the public‘s right to return him to office, he does nothing to allow voters to actually express their opinion on the real issues that impact their lives.

Next year, the legislature will vote on the crucial issue of whether to extend the experiment of absolute monarchial Mayoral control over the public school system. And yet, in all the City there is only one opportunity this year for voters to express a clear cut choice on this matter of monumental consequence. As such, it is likely that all eyes will be on the race for State Senate between incumbent Marty Connor and upstart Dan Squadron to gauge whether the much ballyhooed public anger over the manner in which school are run is really of much political consequence.

Since, outside of a Park in one corner of the district, virtually nothing separates these candidates on this issues, voters who care about the schools are well advised to cast their votes on the basis of this issue alone.

As one can see in this video excerpt of a recent debate between these candidates, the contrast could not be greater. Squadron thinks Mayoral control has made the school system accountable to the public. Connor thinks it has stripped away all accountability.

Most parents of public school children in the 25th Senatorial District seem to side with Connor, citing Kindergarteners in Tribeca being bussed to 1st Avenue and 23rd Street; admissions processes for Pre-K designed by Franz Kafka and M.C. Escher. A gifted admissions process designed by Lester Maddox and Orville Faubus. The elimination of politicians, but not politics, from the school variance process, with the Tweed Court house accommodating its favorite out of district kids in schools that can’t accommodate children from their own zones. Parents being fobbed off on “parent coordinators” whose job is to block access to anyone who might actually be able to accomplish anything or answer a question. And no accountability to anyone.

Meanwhile Squadron trumpets his service in the Bloomberg educational bureaucracy, and his endorsements from key Bloomberg educrats.

Connor acknowledges the new regime’s made some worthy changes “at the edges”, and Squadron acknowledges some changes need to be made, but their underlying attitude is unmistakable. Squadron wants cosmetic changes akin to putting lipstick on a mule, while Connor is looking to throw out most of the bathwater.

As far as the future, Squadron’s vision is also clear--more of the same, only somehow better. He accuses Connor of wanting to “go back to the bad old days of the Board of Education.” Actually, the video captures Connor saying “I don’t know anyone that wants to go back to the old system.” Since Squadron was sitting right next to Connor at the time, one must once again conclude that Squadron is lying, but that’s like complaining of dogs biting men.

Actually Connor is part of the Senate Democrats’ School Governance Task Force and is holding a hearing to get parental input on Mayoral Control so as to better formulate the school governance legislation to be introduced in next year’s session.

The hearing is Tuesday, August 12, 5:00-8 PM at Brooklyn Borough Hall.

What a novel idea--to listen to parents instead of paternalistically trying to force feed them what you think is good for them.

    Michigan Legislature's Scorecard

    MICHIGAN HOUSE RACES:

MI-07 is a Congressional District that we have a very good shot at taking this year. It is one of the top battleground districts in the country. Mark Schauer is the Democrat running for the MI-07 House seat. Here is a video of Mark Schauer giving a keynote address at a climate conference:

If you live in the district, please volunteer to help Mark out.

MI-09 is the other one is Michigan house seat we can flip to blue. Gary Peters is running for this seat and is raising a good deal of money to mount a strong challenge to a Bush Republican. Peters has been endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters, the Michigan AFL-CIO and the Veterans Alliance for Security and Democracy, among many others. Gary is in favor of bringing out troops home and giving our Veterans the benefits and healthcare they deserve. The Repub he is challenging has consistently voted AGAINST expanding veterans benefits.

Peters is running against Joe Knollenberg, who has run into a bit of a problem with underreporting the value of his Washington, DC townhouse by hundreds of thousands of dollars in his personal financial disclosure forms, a probable violation of House rules. Knollenberg's excuse is, apparently, that he is incompetent. He claims it was a "clerical error," year after year. Look, if you or I make such mistakes we get penalized. Knollenberg is either a crook or incompetent. Which is it, Joe?

If you live in MI-09 district, please volunteer for Gary and help flip another House seat to blue.

The California Progress Report is published by Frank D. Russo, a longtime observer of and participant in California politics.

The Liberal OC covers politics in Orange County.

Peter Stark is one of the most progressive members of Congress. Keep up with what he is doing here, or here.

THE PROGRESSIVE CAUCUS of the California Democratic Party: The last election cycle in the United States unveiled an unprecedented political landscape in this country, with hundreds of thousands of previously politically naive individuals becoming involved in the process of electing new leadership. What united many of these people was an underlying groundswell of progressive thought and deep concern about the direction of the country under a Conservative Republican administration. With the goal of providing a unified, Progressive voice within the existing State Democratic Party structure, the Progressive Caucus was founded.

Here is a list of Progressive candidates running in California worth your support (all endorsed by Progressive Majority):

    Marty Block
Candidate for State Assembly - District 78 (Open Seat)
    San Diego County

Marty Block is a candidate for the 78th Assembly District. He is currently elected to the San Diego Community College District Board of Trustees, and previously served on the San Diego Board of Education. The 78th is currently held by a conservative, but she is term-limited out of office. This district has grown more Democratic over the years and is one of the best opportunities for a progressive victory this year. Marty would provide a strong platform for progressive issues in San Diego.

Click here to support and learn more about Marty.

    Mark Ridley-Thomas
Candidate for Los Angeles County Supervisor - District 2 (Challenger)

California Senator Mark Ridley-Thomas is running for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, 2nd District, in the highest priority race for progressives in Los Angeles County. Mark is running against a formidable candidate, former chief of police and current Los Angeles City Councilman Bernard Parks. Although elected by a majority African American district, Parks has a conservative voting record when it comes to investing in communities. If Parks wins, Los Angeles County will be controlled by a conservative majority at a time when county hospitals and emergency services in communities of color are facing closure. Mark has been a staunch supporter of progressive issues such as the establishment of school health centers, consumer protection, community reinvestment, jobs and workforce development.

Click here to support and learn more about Mark.

    Bob Blumenfield
Candidate for State Assembly - District 40 (Open Seat)
    Los Angeles, Northridge, Van Nuys

Bob is running for the California Assembly, 40th District. For the past seven years Bob has been the District Director to Congressman Howard Berman. Bob is Chair of the Valley Anti-Defamation League, Vice Chair of the California Trust for Public Schools and a former board member of the Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters. Bob is a strong proponent of progressive issues in such key areas as education, healthcare, the environment and economic justice. Bob has two formidable primary opponents who are conservative Democrats: Stuart Waldman is the former Chief of Staff to the current Assembly member, and Laurette Healey is a former Deputy State Controller. Bob has received the endorsement of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Congressmembers Howard Berman and Henry Waxman, California State Speaker Fabian Nunez, County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Click here to support and learn more about Bob.

    Richard Barrera
Candidate for San Diego Board of Education - Subdistrict D (Challenger)

Richard Barrera is a candidate for the San Diego School District in Nominating Subdistrict D. Richard is Latino and a union organizer with SEIU Local 399. Richard faces a difficult race in the general election against conservative incumbent Luis Acle, a former Reagan administration official who has openly expressed interest in higher office. A Barrera victory would create both a working progressive majority and a Democratic supermajority.

Click here to support and learn more about Richard.

    Sherri Lightner
Candidate for San Diego City Council - District 1 (Open Seat)

Sherri Lightner is running for the 1st City Council District in San Diego. A community volunteer and leader, Sherri has served as president of both the La Jolla Town Council and the La Jolla Shores Association. An engineer by training, she is a recognized expert on land development law. Because of term limits, the 1st will be an open seat. Sherri represents an opportunity to elect a progressive woman to a historically moderate to conservative seat, allowing for a potential progressive majority.

Click here to support and learn more about Sherri.

    Stephen Whitburn
Candidate for San Diego City Council - District 3 (Open Seat)

Stephen Whitburn is an openly gay candidate running for the open 3rd City Council District in San Diego. This seat is safely Democratic, but Stephen's election could mean the difference between a Democratic majority and a true progressive majority. In particular, he will fight for progressive values on housing issues, especially for renter's rights and against development that is forcing longtime residents (many elderly and people of color) out of what had been affordable housing. As a community activist, he has worked very closely with labor, walking picket lines and working to pass a living wage ordinance. Stephen is also a former union member with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.

Click here to support and learn more about Stephen.

    John Lee Evans
Candidate for San Diego Board of Education - Subdistrict A (Challenger)

John Lee Evans is a clinical psychologist and long-time progressive activist on education and social justice issues. He is running against an incumbent Republican, Mitz Lee. If elected, John will provide a strong progressive voice on the school board for local control and improved opportunity for children in low-income and immigrant communities. A win would create a progressive majority and a Democratic super majority.

Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Buildings, Pacific Grove, CA
2008 ACEEE Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Buildings
    "Scaling Up: Building Tomorrow's Solutions"

August 17–22, 2008 • Asilomar Conference Center • Pacific Grove, California

    Conference Co-Chairs:

Michael Baechler, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
Rich Brown, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

The 2008 ACEEE Summer Study is the 14th biennial ACEEE conference on Energy Efficiency in Buildings and will be held August 17–22, 2008. A diverse group of energy efficiency professionals from around the world will gather at this pre-eminent meeting to discuss the technological basis for, and practical implementation of, reducing energy use in buildings. Presentations and discussions will relate to the theme, "Scaling Up: Building Tomorrow's Solutions." What started out at the Summer Study nearly three decades ago as a fringe activity is now mainstream: energy efficiency in buildings. Energy efficiency now represents our best hope to avoid the worst consequences of global warming and energy resource depletion. But to achieve this potential, the energy efficiency "engine" has to be greatly expanded. New programs, technologies, and financing sources need to be developed. A new generation of energy efficiency practitioners, researchers, and policymakers needs to be trained and deployed to solve the problems we face. Do you have ideas about how to make this happen? Come share your ideas and engage in dialogue about these issues at the 2008 Summer Study. Exchange ideas with some of the leading thinkers, visionaries, and luminaries in the field while experiencing the magnificent natural setting that is Asilomar.

The Early Bird Registration Fee for the full conference is $720; the Regular Registration Fee is $820 (both fees include a set of conference proceedings). The one-day fee is $350. All speakers must pay the registration fee.

The conference will be conducted in a casual atmosphere conducive to developing working relationships. Dress is also casual; jeans and shorts are appropriate attire.

WEEKLY PEACE VIGIL IN HUNTINGTON BEACH: Every Sunday, 7 PM

It's hard for most people to imagine a world at peace. We are a very small group of people who believe that this is indeed possible and that peace will happen once enough people believe that it can. So we stand at the pier every Sunday night with a sign that says: "Visualize World Peace. It's up to you". We also believe in non-violence both physically and in our thoughts. We will discuss peace and non-violence with anyone who is rational and smile quietly at those who aren't. We hold this vigil in a spirit of dignity and respect for all as we try to build bridges with those who don't share our philosophy.

Please bring a candle or just help us hold up our banner (no signs please; we have our banner!)

VIRGINIA FOCUS: Blogs, Obama, Energy and Agriculture, Groups and Events

VIRGINIA ACT BLUE SITE: Help turn Virginia even more blue.

    BLOGGING VIRGINIA:

The Virginia Organizing Project is a statewide, multi-issue citizens' organization committed to challenging injustice by empowering people in local communities to address issues that affect the quality of their lives.

Virginia Poverty Law Center (VPLC) is a not-for-profit organization concentrating in the areas of law that affect low-income families. Established in 1978 to advocate on behalf of low-income Virginians on poverty issues of statewide importance, VPLC is the only state-wide organization providing training to local legal aid program staff, private bar attorneys, and low-income clients, relating exclusively to the legal rights of Virginia's poor. VPLC also assists low-income Virginians and Legal Aid Programs with legislative and administrative proposals affecting the poor in Virginia as well as providing technical assistance, training and publications to Virginia's Legal Aid Programs in the following substantive areas: Consumer, Elder Rights, Family, Health Care, Housing & Public Benefits.

The Virginia Young Democrats blog has links to local Young Democrat groups and college clubs, and has information of interest to young voters in Virginia. This is Virginia's political future!

Raising Kaine: a community forum to discuss political issues of interest to Virginians.

    Some stories of interest:

Bad economic news has been hitting us all under the Bush Administration. Here are two examples in Virginia. Virginia's jobless rate the highest in 4 years and Richmond foreclosures jump 805 percent. Yes...fforeclosures jump 805 percent!!! Thank you Bush. Thank you McCain. And the Republicans tell us the recession is all in our heads!

Hampton Roads Veterans and Military Families Rally for Obama

Let's Make a Deal on Offshore Oil? Not sure I agree with it, but there is a point to it...and oddly it fits exactly with what Paris Hilton said in her response to McCain's attack ad using her name! Virginia Young Democrats don't agree and remind us of 10 reasons not to drill.

Seems Republicans are so scared of losing Virginia, they are using scare tactics to try and limit voter registration efforts. Really pitiful! Let me be clear. Voter registration and identity theft are NOT related issues and the REpublican attempt to link them is even less credible than their trying to link Iraq and al Qaeda. You don't have to give anything to someone registering voters. You can either fill out the form and submit it yourself, OR you can leave it with the canvasser and get a receipt.

And speaking of Republican Racism, here's an article from an Arizona blog that is apropos: McCain and the Race Card - The Corporate Media's Role. And let's remember McCain opposed the Martin Luther King, jr. holiday. For those who want to read more about Republican racism, I've discussed it here (from before Obama won the primary), and it is covered in Drew Westin's book The Political Brain with some pretty nasty examples.

Navy Opposes VA Offshore Drilling. Period. End of Debate.

Healthcare for America NOW Kicks Off. Which reminds me of something I wrote before about how our current so-called "business model" for healthcare really, really doesn't work.

LIVING GREEN DC/MD/VA works to send a message to the community and influence small changes in everyday actions that can have a big impact on our world. As a group we look for ways to make small changes in the way we live, enjoying the support and friendship of other like-minded people. This meetup can only grow if lots of members become Assistant Organizers and provide fun and creative ways to socialize, learn, spread the word, volunteer, network, do fun things. Suggestions are seeing films with environmental themes, dining where organic and locally purchased produce is promoted, visiting farmers markets and socializing afterwards, volunteering for Earth Day activities, meeting in cafes to discuss books and articles, etc.. Whether it's a movie screening or eating a meal with freinds at an environmentally friendly restaurant, you are sure to make an impact, so join the group and volunteer. Go here for more information.
