    Progressive Democrat Issue 174

    It is difficult to feel good this 4th of July given the mess the Bush/McCain Republicans have led this nation into. This year alone 438,000 people who lost their jobs. We are well into the Bush's SECOND recession (first president ever to preside over two recessions) with almost no recovery between them. We are officially in a bear market. Food prices are rising worldwide. Oil is at record highs suggesting Americans will have a very, very tough winter. The deficit is WAY above where it has ever been before and no end in sight. And I am not even going into the inept, idiotic and completely useless Bush/McCain Iraq war.

    It is hard to look at Bush/McCain America, with its broken levees, broken bridges, broken economy and broken hopes and feel good today. But July 4th is about America's great potential, the dream behind America, not about the disasterous Bush administration. The Bush/McCain agenda of torture and violations of the Constitution is about as far away from America's dream and America's potential as you can get. Today we celebrate America. America as it should be. America as it was envisioned when we broke from England.

    Here is the critical text of the Declaration of Independence, now 232 years old. And boy does it resonate today:

    When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

    We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

    That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

    Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security...


    THAT is what we celebrate today. Not the ruin and corruption the Republicans have caused since 2000.

    IT'S THE ECONOMY, STUPID

    This comes from another Daily Gotham author. It is NYC centric but I think everyone in the country can appreciate the issues brought up. The entire nation is in the middle of a SECOND Bush recession (third if you count his father's recession) and this one seems the worst of all. Inflation AND a recession seem the norm now for America, something we haven't seen since the Ford and Carter years. Boy do we need a change in direction! From Daily Gotham:

    So here we are at the tail end of the disastrous Bush era - 201 days and 14 hours left at this writing - and can start doing damage assessments. Take the economy. Our currency has lost half its value, our government debt has roughly doubled, we have lost millions of manufacturing jobs and replaced them with lower-paying jobs in the service sector, our infrastructure is crumbling, and most importantly, due to a burst asset bubble created by lax regulation in the housing industry that in turn produced a credit bubble, our economy is going to either stay stagnant or contract outright. As The New York Times points out today, this state of affairs is likely to persist until the Fall of 2009. In short, we are fucked.

    You'll be hearing apologies for this from conservatives with all the frequency you heard them from Soviet-era apparatchiks, of course. One virtue of being an ideologue is that you're never wrong, no matter how crushing the weight of facts that might indicate otherwise.

    So, as some parts of the country are in recession and others lurch into outright depression - Michigan, Ohio and Indiana along with most of the rust belt, for example - it's time to take a sobering look at what the medium-term future may hold for the City of New York.

    Our economy is based on services, real estate and insurance, with the finance sector alone contributing roughly 35% to the City's overall payroll. The financial monoculture arising from the economy's dependence on Wall Street creates serious risks, since Wall Street layoffs - Bear Stearns is gone, and it might not be the only major bank on the brink of extinction - percolate through the service sector dependent on the salaries paid there. That said, New York City has several strengths that should help us weather the Bush depression less badly than, say, Phoenix or Columbus.

    Real estate: Along with London and Tokyo, New York City is a global hub of industry and culture, which very concretely means that foreigners with currencies that aren't depreciating by the day buy our real estate stock. This has contributed, along with the natural limits on supply created by the City's finite physical space, to a somewhat more stable market than elsewhere in the country.

    Tourism: They buy our apartments, but they also spend their money in our stores, visit our theaters, eat at our restaurants: flush residents of the Eurozone. Again, a net plus. Just stop crowding the damned subway and standing in the middle of the streets.

    International business
    : The United States economy, despite George Bush's best efforts, remains the largest in the world, and as the country's largest city and business hub, New York attracts more foreign companies than any other city.

    Taxes: it's a standard trope from conservatives that New York has crushingly high tax rates. And our taxes are high; but for foreign corporations, due to the structure of our tax code, effectively, that situation is reversed.

    Internet connectivity: This is not often appreciated, but New York is the terminus of several trans-continental and trans-Atlantic fiber-optic cables, as a result of which we have probably the highest connectivity in the world. That's wonderful for the YouTube afficionado, but it's also a real competitive advantage for companies doing business on the internet.

    Diversification
    : You have to give mayor Bloomberg some credit even as he turns this town into a ghetto for the wealthy: he's worked hard to attract new industries to the City's economy. One example is film, and though our economic dependence on Wall Street is still worrisome, it's been somewhat mitigated by the growth in other sectors.

    Make no mistake, the next eighteen months or two years are going to be hard. But compared to other places, things could be very much worse.


    Some of my readers are in places worse hit than NYC. Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania are suffering from a loss of jobs so deep that we need a real effort to revitalize their economies...the kind of effort that could make a whole new alternative energy industry that creates jobs AND domestic energy source in our rust belt. Then Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois are not only hit with job loss and declines in agriculture, but the Republican failure to maintain our most basic infrastructure has led to a disasterous flood season that has ruined many homes and towns. There is not one state in the United States of America that has overall benefitted from the Bush Administration, and most have been seriously hurt by it. Pretty much only Exxon/Mobil, Saudi Arabia and Halliburton and their buddies have benefitted. You and I have only been hurt.

    FOX NEWS: Stooping to Anti-Semitism

    I guess this is a sign that the right wing is abandoning all hope of attracting the Jewish vote. Their racism has alienated the black and Hispanic vote they have claimed to be wooing. Now, by showing their willingness to exploit anti-Semitic stereotypes, Fox News shows the right wing has given up on Jewish voters.

    So recently the New York Times reported that Fox News is seeing its ratings plunge. Of course this is fact based on commonly used data.

    Fox News, always unwilling to accept unpleasant facts, decided to vilify the reporters who wrote the story. Cause you see, Fox News can't face the fact that their audience is shrinking fast, so they have to blame someone else. But what is really revealing is how they choose to do it. They altered photos of the journalists who reported on the Fox News ratings plunge. In particular, they altered the image of Jacques Steinberg into a grotesque caricature of Jewish stereotypes.     As explained in a Daily Kos diary, this is part of a long tradition of exaggerating supposedly "Jewish" features to vilify someone. And of course, it is part of a long tradition of Fox News using hate speech, racism and intolerance to push their extremist agenda, something I have written about several times before. And this recent example of Fox News anti-Semitism is getting noticed by the National Jewish Democratic Council.

    50 State Strategy: Diane Benson for Alaska

    This is a repeat from some time back. Alaska is a genuine swing state this year in EVERY way. It is neck and neck between Obama and McCain. The Senate race is neck and neck. And the House race is neck and neck. Let me highlight Diane Benson, running for Alaska's House seat. This is from back in March but is well worth repeating.



    I met Diane Benson, Congressional Candidate in Alaska, about a month ago and was very impressed. But only got to hear her speak as a candidate tonight. Again I was impressed. Diane is a genuine American who has worked hard all her life to get an education and to better the life of her son. Often she and her son have worked hard for our country and for their community. She has the confidence of someone who worked their way through school driving trucks while raising her son. She has the confidence of a woman who worked in the male dominated workers camp on the Alaskan pipeline. She has the confidence of someone who has had to work for everything, being given nothing easily. The contrast with the spoiled brat who inhabits the White House is about as striking as you can get.

    Among those who came out for Diane was as diverse a group of Democrats you can find. Avid Hillary supporters rubbing shoulders with avid Obama supporters, both writing checks for Diane and THANKING her for her running. Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney was among the strongest voices supporting Diane with both enthusiasm and a bit of awe. Also there were former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark, our next Public Advocate Norm Siegel, Captain Jon Soltz, Veteran of Kosovo and the Iraq War and founder of VoteVets.org, fellow Daily Gotham writer Dan Jacoby, and City Council Candidate Steve Behar (if I left anyone out, please let me know!). I also saw members of two Brooklyn Democratic clubs, IND and CBID, and the current CBID president, Chris Owens, was on the host committee. Quite an interesting collection of Democrats.

    Captain Jon Soltz introduced Diane Benson. Soltz has an amazing story of his own, volunteering for military service as part of his dedication to both America and Israel, serving honorably and bravely, only to discover when he returned home that the very government that sent him to war treated him like dirt. His discovery of the lies that got us into Iraq and his realization that Bush ran away from the fight with al-Qaeda, the enemy that attacked us, and his witnessing the closing of VA hospitals by Bush inspired Soltz to found Vote Vets.org Jon Soltz summed up George Bush this way: "This guy [George Bush] is the worst commander-in-chief in the history of our armed forces."

    Soltz's introduction of Diane Benson was about the most heartfelt and passionate endorsement I have heard. This is because Diane Benson is running for office precisely on the same issues that politicized Soltz: the blundered Iraq War, the failure to secure America, the neglect of our soldiers, the neglect of our veterans. There was a bond between the two that went beyond what any of us who have not experienced first hand the pain of this war can quite understand.

    Among the things that really stuck in my mind was the Republican neglect of our troops. Diane described having to buy her son military socks so he'd have some to wear. What, America can't afford to properly clothe our troops? Is THIS what Republicans mean by "supporting the troops." We know the Republican dominated government failed to provide adequate body armor and forced soldiers to pay their own way to visit home on leave (until people like Al Franken and Air America Radio embarassed them into changing their policy by raising frequent flyer miles to give to our troops). But they didn't even give our troops adequate socks??? And Jon Soltz reminded us about Bush closing VA hospitals, the series of events that led to Soltz becoming politicized and forming VoteVets.org. Diane has been dedicating herself to helping our troops, greeting them when they get home, visiting them in the hospital, helping them adapt back to life in the states...before they all too often get sent back. The lies surrounding the war, the failure of our leadership, the neglect of our soldiers, the neglect of our veterans...THESE are the reasons Diane Benson is running.

    It's about the WAR, stupid. We are mired in a war that was based on lies, which has been full of blunders, STILL lacks an exit strategy and in which victory is not even defined. Diane Benson knows first hand the cost this war has had on our soldiers, our Veterans, and their families. Her son, Sgt Latseen Benson, served in Iraq. He volunteered after the 9/11 attacks, something that struck a chord with us New Yorkers because he chose to serve because of the attacks on our city. He was scheduled to come home when he was stop-lossed (yet another abuse our troops have to suffer at the hands of a callous, negligent government...also called the "backdoor draft"). Thirteen days after he should have come home, he was severely injured, filled with shrapnel and losing both his legs and part of a hand.

    At the center of all the blunders in the Iraq war, at the center of all the neglect of our soldiers and veterans, is George W. Bush and his allies, John McCain and Don Young. And again, Diane Benson and her family saw first hand the callousness, the utter lack of any sense of empathy shown by George Bush. When her son was recovering from severe injuries while serving in Iraq, he was fitted with prosthetic legs to replace those that got blown off. While learning to use them, and while still recovering from his other injuries, he remained mostly in a wheelchair. George Bush came to visit the hospital where he was recovering. In an elaborate photo op where the wounded soldiers were practicly mere props, her son was lined up with the others, standing on prothetic limbs he wasn't yet used to. Bush came down the line, shaking hands with these soldiers he had sent to war with no logic, no reason, no plan...no body armor...Shaking hands with Sgt Latseen Benson, George Bush asked, "So how are those legs working out for you?"

    Face to face with a brave soldier who had lost his legs serving in Bush's Big Blunder in Iraq, George Bush asks, "So how are those legs working out for you?"

    Just in case you forgot, let's remember what Bush was doing at that age:



    The fury Benson and her son felt at that insult from the Chickenhawk in Chief was quite obvious as Diane told the story.

    THIS is why Diane Benson is running: because the Republicans who are sending our troops ill equipped into a war with no purpose or goal don't even care about those troops. They are pawns in a game about oil and props for photo ops and their injuries boil down to: So how are those prosthetic limbs that replace the legs you were born with and got blown off working for you?

    Ending the war and holding our politicians accountable for the blunders are focal points of Diane's campaign. But her campaign is about even more than that. It is about values and service. She comes from a Native American tradition of strong family and community values, and the record of service Diane and her son have puts us all to shame. Latseen gave all he could serving in Iraq. Diane has served her community all her life, volunteering with senior citizens at Ketchikan Hospital at the age of 12, and although often homeless, worked a variety of social service oriented jobs with the underprivileged and the elderly until she took a position with the Fairbanks Native Association. She has worked to stop child abuse, was a proud member of Local 959 - Teamster Union, serves on Anchorage Chamber of Commerce’s Military Appreciation Committee, on the Healing Racism Steering Committee, was a two term President of the Alaska Native Sisterhood, Camp 87- Anchorage, and is an active member of the National Organization of Women.

    I think simply put, Diane Benson is the ideal woman to send to Congress from any state...Alaska just happens to be lucky enough to have her running. By contrast, the Republican incumbent is a wealthy lawyer with no understanding of working class or middle class Americans, no record of support for our troops or Veterans, and is perhaps best known for a record of corruption as long as they get. So the choice Alaska has is between an out of touch lawyer best known for corruption, or Diane Benson, known for her genuine record of service to her community, to Alaksa, and to American's troops and Veterans. If you really want to shake up Congress, sending a tough, working class woman and mother of a disabled Iraq War Veteran is the way to do it.     50 State Strategy: Mark Begich for Alaska

    And while I am focusing on this year's prime swing state (dead even for President, Senate AND House), let me put in a plug for Mark Begich for US Senate.

    Mark Begich is running against Republican Ted Stevens, perhaps the most corrupt politician in America today. More on Mark from his website:

    Mark Begich, 46, is in his fifth year as mayor of Alaska's largest city...

    Under Mayor Begich, Anchorage's bond ratings have improved to among the top 5 percent in the country, some 9,200 new jobs have been created, the city enjoyed the second highest construction value in city history and property taxes dropped for the majority of Anchorage property owners between 2006-07.

    Begich has worked to insure that Anchorage's increasingly diverse population - where 95 languages are spoken among public school students - share in the city's prosperity. For three years during Begich's tenure, Anchorage has been named one of America's "100 Best Communities for Young People" by America's Promise.

    At age 26, Begich was first elected to the Anchorage Assembly where he served nearly 10 years. He was three times elected by his colleagues as chairman, the city's second highest office. In 2003, he beat an incumbent mayor and two-term former mayor to become Anchorage's mayor. Three years later, Begich was re-elected by one of the largest margins in city history.

    Kevin Staunton
    Candidate for State Representative - District 41A (Challenger)
    Edina in Hennepin County

    Kevin Staunton is the city attorney for Excelsior and a progressive leader running for the State House in District 41A. We recruited Kevin with the help of the local DFL party unit specifically to run for this seat. District 41A is one of the top pick-up targets in the state. In 2004, John Kerry became the first Democrat to win the district in two generations with 51.5% of the vote. Kevin's Republican opponent is unclear at this time. The nine-term moderate incumbent, Ron Erhardt, lost the GOP endorsement last month to an ultra-conservative challenger. It is unclear whether Erhardt will run in the Republican primary or whether he will run as an Independent. Kevin has been a leading advocate of progressive reforms in Minnesota, particularly through greater investment in our public schools and transportation infrastructure.

    Gail Kulick Jackson
    Candidate for State Representative - District 16A (Challenger)
    Sherburne, Mille Lacs, Benton and Morrison Counties, including St. Cloud and Little Falls

    Gail Kulick Jackson is an attorney in Milaca, running for the Minnesota State House in District 16A. Although Gail has been a candidate for the state House twice before (in 2004 and 2006), we actively recruited Gail to run again because of her strong progressive leadership in her community. The Republican is a six-term incumbent and is one of the most conservative members of the Minnesota House. Gail has been a progressive champion, and if elected, will work to protect civil rights and expand vital investments in the state.

    Jim Godfrey
    Candidate for State Representative - District 17A (Challenger)
    Isanti and Chisago Counties, including Cambridge and North Blanco

    Jim Godfrey is a teacher and Education Minnesota member from Cambridge running for the state House in District 17A. We recruited Jim with the help of Education Minnesota leaders. Jim's Republican opponent is four-term incumbent Rob Eastlund, who presents himself as a moderate but has a very conservative voting record. Several neighboring Republican incumbents have lost since 2004, and Eastlund is vulnerable as the district shifts. Jim is running to restore representation for average working Minnesotans, focusing on improving our health care affordability, ensuring high quality public schools, and protecting our environment.     Mike Obermueller

    Farmington and Hastings in Dakota County

    Mike Obermueller is an attorney from Eagan, running for the Minnesota House of Representatives in District 38B. Although Mike ran in 2006 (and lost by just 163 votes), we actively recruited him to run again, this time emphasizing his core, progressive values. We have worked with him to develop a comprehensive campaign plan, a detailed financial strategy, and a progressive message. Eagan is the home of Republican Governor Tim Pawlenty, and has been trending Democratic over the past three election cycles.     Jerry Pitzrick
    Candidate for State Representative - District 42B (Challenger)
    Eden Prairie in Hennepin County

    Jerry Pitzrick is a civil engineer from Eden Prairie running for in District 42B. We recruited Jerry based on his active role (with his wife Deb) in the local DFL and his commitment to progressive values. With seven-term incumbent Erik Paulson running for U.S. House this year, the seat has recently become an open seat. There are two Republican challengers, neither of whom has held elective office. If elected, Jerry will be a leading voice for infrastructure investments and a progressive tax system. Fielding a candidate in this race continues our work in Eden Prairie - we successfully ran Kim Ross in 2007, who is now a leading member of the Eden Prairie School Board.

    Ted Butler
    Candidate for State Representative - District 49A (Open Seat)
    Andover and Ham Lake in Anoka County

    Ted Butler works at the University of Minnesota managing the finances of its self-insured employee health plan, and is running for the open seat in District 49A. During the buildup of his campaign, the Republican incumbent decided not to run for re-election, creating an open seat. The Republican candidate to succeed the incumbent is ultra-conservative Peggy Scott, who is running as a self-described tax watchdog. Ted has already been debating her for several years - they both serve on the Andover Parks Commission. Ted will be a champion for progressive values, working to ensure that all families are treated fairly and that the time tax caused by failing roads and bridges is properly mitigated.

    Danna Elling-Schultz
    Candidate for Hastings City Council - Ward 4 (Incumbent)

    Danna Elling-Schultz is a DFL researcher in the Minnesota Senate and a candidate for re-election to the City Council of Hastings. Danna has been a long-standing champion for public education funding and smart investment in suburban communities. If re-elected, she will continue to work against unfettered development and ensure fair and equal treatment of families in Hastings.

    WASHINGTON FOCUS: Progressive Candidates

    Washington State is a place I have focused on from time to time...and now will focus on more intently.

    First off, here are some progressive candidates who deserve your support...all are endorsed by Progressive Majority

    Helen Price Johnson
    Candidate for Island County Commissioner - District 1 (Challenger)

    Helen Price Johnson, along with her husband, owns and manages a successful small business on Whidbey Island. She was elected to the South Whidbey School Board in 2001, and currently she represents the board on legislative issues at the state and federal level. In 2006 we helped elect Progressive Majority candidate John Dean to the Island County Commission. He is the sole progressive on the three-member commission. John introduced us to Helen in early 2007 as a possible candidate for a future campaign. After meeting with Helen, we knew she would be a great candidate for the Island County Commission. If she wins we will have a progressive majority on the Island County Commission. In the summer of 2007, the four-term conservative District 1 incumbent stepped down from his seat. Subsequently, the Island County Planning Director, Phil Bakke, was appointed to fulfill the last year of his term, and is now seeking election. Bakke has proven to be closely aligned with the conservative Republican majority on the board. We need Helen on the Commission to stop Bakke from getting a solid conservative hold on this seat.

    Peter Goldmark
    Candidate for Commissioner of Public Lands (Challenger)

    Peter Goldmark has owned and operated his family's Okanogan ranch for more than 30 years. In 2006, Peter ran for Congress. It was a surprisingly competitive race against an entrenched incumbent in WA-5, a very conservative congressional district. Progressive Majority, along with members of our Washington Advisory Council, helped recruit Peter into the race for Commissioner of Public Lands. The Lands Commissioner is Washington state's highest environmental office; the position oversees the state's Department of Natural Resources. The conservative incumbent commissioner, Doug Sutherland, continues to publicly express skepticism regarding the causes and potential impacts of global warming.

    Pam Brokaw
    Candidate for Clark County Commissioner - District 1 (Open Seat)

    A former newspaper reporter and congressional staffer, Pam Brokaw is the executive director of a non-profit organization that builds sustainable, affordable housing. She is also the former chair of the Clark County Democratic Party. With the help of Progressive Majority, Pam sought office for the first time in 2004, running for the legislature in the conservative 18th district. Although she did not win the seat, Pam ran a strong race and won endorsements from three major area newspapers during the hard-fought campaign. After being recruited by Progressive Majority in early 2007, Pam announced in December her bid for the open commission seat. She has strong support from elected Democratic representatives at the local and state level as well as Progressive Majority 2005 and 2006 candidate Clark County Commissioner Steve Stuart. The commission is currently made up of one progressive, one moderate Democrat and one conservative. The moderate Democrat is retiring, so Pam's election would mean the body will swing to a progressive majority. Clark County is the fastest-growing county in the state, so control of the commission means that critical land-use decisions will be made in favor of the environment instead of big developers. Pam is the sole Democrat in the race and there are currently three conservatives running.

    Kim Thorburn
    Candidate for Spokane County Commissioner - District 1 (Challenger)

    Dr. Kim Thorburn is currently the Medical Director of Planned Parenthood of the Inland Northwest and is a current or former board member for a number of organizations, including the Washington State Health Board, Spokane Audubon Society, Spokane AIDS Network, the Washington State Medical Association and many others. Before her current job, Kim was the Spokane County health officer, and is well known as a progressive advocate for healthcare in Spokane County. She is running against incumbent Todd Mielke, a very conservative Republican with deep ties to the development community.

    Fred Walser
    Candidate for State Senate - District 39 (Challenger)
    Sedro-Woolley, Arlington, Darrington, Granite Falls, Monroe

    Fred Walser is a challenger for the Washington State Senate, District 39. Fred is the former City of Sultan Police Chief, chair of the US-2 Safety Coalition and a founding board member of the Washington State Patrol Troopers Association. Fred's roots in the community run deep: he is a former board member of the Snohomish County Federated Health and Safety Network, a former commissioner for the Snohomish County Children's Commission, a Governor-appointed member of the Juvenile Justice Advisory Board and was instrumental in starting the Monroe Boys and Girls Club. Fred is no stranger to politics; his wife, Donnetta, is in her second term as Mayor of Monroe. He is an ideal progressive candidate to square-up against conservative Senator Val Stevens, known for her radical anti-choice and anti-gay rights positions. If Fred can unseat Sen. Stevens, his legislative agenda will include addressing the safety concerns on Highway 2 and increasing transit options. Fred has numerous endorsements, including Sheriff John Lovick, whom Progressive Majority successfully fielded as a candidate for Snohomish County Sheriff in 2007.

    Tim Knue
    Washington
    Candidate for State Representative - District 10 (Challenger)
    Mount Vernon, Burlington, Stanwood, La Conner, Whidbey Island, and Camano Island

    Tim Knue is a candidate for the state House of Representatives in the rural swing 10th Legislative District. Tim is a 32-year classroom teacher, Washington Education Association member and former teacher of the year. A graduate of Washington State University, Tim teaches agriculture education at Mount Vernon High School. This is Tim's second campaign for State Representative; he led on Election Day in 2006 before losing narrowly to Rep. Barbara Bailey. This year will be different. Tim sought our help early, and his manager attended the Wellstone Advanced Campaign Management. He is running against a conservative Republican-appointee, Norma Smith. If elected, Tim will be a tireless advocate for family farms, rural communities, and small businesses.

    Patricia Terry
    Candidate for State Representative - District 10 (Challenger)
    Mount Vernon, Burlington, Stanwood, La Conner, Whidbey Island, and Camano Island

    Patricia Terry is a challenger running for the Washington State House of Representatives in the 10th Legislative District. Patricia has worked for 30 years as a Registered Nurse. Recently, she has worked in healthcare quality improvement and as a health facility evaluator/investigator on behalf of Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. From 2004-2006, Patricia served as a board member of the Washington State Association for Healthcare Quality and was the organization's president in 2005. Patricia has worked under collective bargaining contracts with the Oregon Nurse's Association (ONA) in Portland and SEIU 660 in Los Angeles, California. Patricia's husband, Michael Cooney, is a retired member of SEIU 660. As a state representative, Patricia would be a strong union ally, and would use her professional experience in health care as a platform to increase access to care and decrease costs of care for everyone. Patricia and Michael live on Camano Island, Washington. She is running against a conservative Republican, Rep. Barbara Bailey, who nearly lost in 2006 against current Progressive Majority candidate Tim Knue. A first time candidate, Patricia has taken advantage of our training and assistance with preparing a budget and field plan, and our media training.

    Marko Liias
    Candidate for State Representative - District 21 (Incumbent)
    Mukilteo, Lynnwood, Edmonds

    Marko Liias is running for his first election to his appointed seat in the House of Representatives, 21st Legislative District. Marko was raised in Everett. He studied international politics at Georgetown University, and is currently seeking a graduate degree at the University of Washington. For four years, Marko operated as a small green builder, constructing homes in South Snohomish County. His business experience and commitment to building a better community were what propelled him into public service. We met Marko at Camp Wellstone in 2005, and successfully fielded him in a race for the Mukilteo City Council.

    After helping elect Rep. Brian Sullivan to the Snohomish County Council in 2007, we watched as Marko recruited Democratic Party activists in a successful bid to secure his appointment to Sullivan's open seat in the suburban, progressive-leaning 21st Legislative District. Marko is one of six openly gay legislators in the State Legislature, and he is also the state's youngest legislator. In his first term in the legislature, he delivered real results to protect consumers, improved Washington state's K-12 education system, and expanded affordable housing. Marko is a champion for Washington families, and he is a leader in fighting for equal treatment for every citizen of our state. An inexperienced Republican, Andrew Funk, has filed to run against him.

    Larry Seaquist
    Candidate for State Representative - District 26 (Incumbent)
    Gig Harbor, Bremerton, Port Orchard

    A US Navy warship captain and Pentagon strategist, Larry launched a second career helping citizens and political leaders strengthen their communities by pioneering new methods of peace-building and conflict prevention in the Middle East, Central and South Asia, and Latin America. For the past several years Larry has also worked as a writer and lecturer, contributing opinion pieces to the Christian Science Monitor and other newspapers. We helped Larry win his 2006 race for the Washington State House, 26th Legislative District, and this year he is one of the Republicans' top targets. In his first term in the state legislature, Larry introduced numerous pieces of progressive legislation, several of which encourage development of a renewable energy industry and increased access to health care.

    Liz Loomis
    Candidate for State Representative - District 44 (Incumbent)
    Snohomish, Mill Creek, Everett, Lake Stevens, Marysville

    Liz Loomis was appointed to the state House of Representatives on January 7, 2008, and was elected by fellow lawmakers to the post of Assistant Whip. Liz has been on the Progressive Majority farm Team since 2005, and represents the 44th Legislative District, a suburban swing district in central Snohomish County. As a small business owner, Liz focused on legislation to help companies succeed. During her first session, she authored six passing bills, including a bill that moved forward the idea of commuter rail service, so people living in eastern Snohomish and King Counties could take the train into Seattle for work. Another bill she co-sponsored provided small businesses with access to affordable health care for employees. The Republicans have recruited Mike Hope to run against Liz. Hope has run for the legislature before, has raised over $100,000 in past races and come close to unseating incumbent Democrats.

    Sandra Romero
    Candidate for Thurston County Commissioner - District 2 (Open Seat)

    Sandra Romero is running for an open seat on the Thurston County Commission. Sandra spent 12 years in the Washington State Legislature representing the area around Washington's capital city, Olympia. There, she was a leader on progressive issues like reproductive choice, healthcare and the environment. In the Legislature, she chaired the House Local Government and State Government Committees. Before her election to the State House, she served as a Democratic Caucus staffer and was a member of the Washington Federation of State Employees, Local 443. Most recently, Sandra worked in Pakistan teaching democratic methods of government. When a seat became open on the Thurston County Commission, Sandra called Progressive Majority. Thurston County is experiencing environmental growing pains as its population rapidly expands and, as a County Commissioner, Sandra will be dedicated to smart growth policies that will protect the region's diverse natural ecosystems.

    Bruce Lachney
    Candidate for Pierce County Council - District 3 (Challenger)

    Bruce Lachney is a regular renaissance man; an airline captain with Delta Airlines, union-member (Air Line Pilots Association, Int'l.), and cranberry farmer. He owns Rainier Mountain Cranberries LLC, which produces cranberries for Ocean Spray and local markets. Rainier Mountain Cranberries is also a member of the American Tree Farm System, and is a family tree farm that produces sustainable wood products. Currently, Bruce is an elected director of the Eatonville School District and, in the past, he was a member of the Pierce County Planning Commission. He is running against an incumbent, Roger Bush, who is a very conservative Republican. Most recently, Bush voted against extending health benefits to domestic partners of county employees.

    Let me highlight some excellent candidates running in New York State.

    Let me introduce Don Barber, running for State Senate (SD-51) and endorsed by Democracy for America. You can read about Don on Daily Gotham.

    Let me also introduce you to my State Senator, Velmanette Montgomery. She is wonderful, proudly progressive, and up for re-election. Here is her website. And here is a video of her receiving the Margaret Sanger Award:



    Velmanette's Republican opponent is yet another virulently anti-Catholic Republican wing nut.

    And let me remind you of another candidate running for State Senate, Jim Gennaro, who I introduced before as working towards an intelligent biodiesel program for NYC's heating needs.

    Steve Harrison is running for Congress in the NY-13 race. Steve Harrison is a leading advocate for withdrawal from Iraq and has been endorsed by American Heritage Democratic Organization, Kelvin Alexander (Co-Founderof 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement), Gary Lane (Chairman of IBEW Local 3), Gloria Steinem, Democracy for New York City, the Democratic Organization of Richmond County, John Strika (President of IUPAT Local 806), former Assemblyman Frank Barbaro, among others. Steve is the progressive in the race while his primary opponent is a "Democrat" who is also seeking the Conservative Party endorsement and has told the Conservative Party that he opposes gay marriage and is in favor of continued occupation of Iraq. Steve, by contrast, is in favor of marriage equality and withdrawal from Iraq. You can read more about him in his own words on Daily Gotham. You cand donate to his campaign through my Act Blue site.     The Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats is a community-based Democratic club. CBID has fought for reform and progressive causes since 1968. As a Brooklyn-based Club, we have been instrumental in the election of many candidates for public office. Much of this success was a result of our question-and-answer forums with prospective candidates as well as our extensive on-the-street contact with our constituents.

    Staunchly opposed to political corruption, we are proud of our independence and our commitment to progressive reform in city, state and national politics. We are a vehicle for citizen empowerment and making government more accountable to our neighborhoods.

    We meet monthly, usually the fourth Thursday evening of the month in the basement of the Park Slope United Methodist Church, on the corner of 6th ave and 8th street, at 7:30pm. All are welcome.

    New Kings Democrats (”NKD”) is a new, grassroots organization in Kings County (Brooklyn), New York whose primary mission is to recruit and prepare individuals to run for Kings County Democratic Committee. NKD hopes to achieve the goal of an inclusionary and participatory democracy by making it easy for individuals to run for local, elected office.     Virginia Poverty Law Center (VPLC) is a not-for-profit organization concentrating in the areas of law that affect low-income families. Established in 1978 to advocate on behalf of low-income Virginians on poverty issues of statewide importance, VPLC is the only state-wide organization providing training to local legal aid program staff, private bar attorneys, and low-income clients, relating exclusively to the legal rights of Virginia's poor. VPLC also assists low-income Virginians and Legal Aid Programs with legislative and administrative proposals affecting the poor in Virginia as well as providing technical assistance, training and publications to Virginia's Legal Aid Programs in the following substantive areas: Consumer, Elder Rights, Family, Health Care, Housing & Public Benefits.

    The Virginia Young Democrats blog has links to local Young Democrat groups and college clubs, and has information of interest to young voters in Virginia. This is Virginia's political future!


    VIRGINIA ACT BLUE SITE: Help turn Virginia even more blue. Since 2005 Virginia has been trending blue, and we can continue that trend. Virginia is important in winning back the Senate, and I believe it might even be a swing state in the Presidential race. There are at least THREE key House races in Virginia this year. The DCCC is targeting VA-11, where the incumbent Repub is one of nearly 30 Republicans to retire, making it an open seat, VA-02, where the Repub incumbent won by LESS THAN 5%, and VA-10. Looking pretty good! And I am starting to read VERY promising things about VA-5. I believe all four of these are winnable and I predict we will win at least two of them...more if we push hard.

This district has grown more Democratic over the years and is one of the best opportunities for a progressive victory this year. Marty would provide a strong platform for progressive issues in San Diego.

    California Senator Mark Ridley-Thomas is running for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, 2nd District, in the highest priority race for progressives in Los Angeles County. Mark is running against a formidable candidate, former chief of police and current Los Angeles City Councilman Bernard Parks. Although elected by a majority African American district, Parks has a conservative voting record when it comes to investing in communities. If Parks wins, Los Angeles County will be controlled by a conservative majority at a time when county hospitals and emergency services in communities of color are facing closure.     Stephen Whitburn is an openly gay candidate running for the open 3rd City Council District in San Diego. This seat is safely Democratic, but Stephen's election could mean the difference between a Democratic majority and a true progressive majority. In particular, he will fight for progressive values on housing issues, especially for renter's rights and against development that is forcing longtime residents (many elderly and people of color) out of what had been affordable housing.     The 2008 ACEEE Summer Study is the 14th biennial ACEEE conference on Energy Efficiency in Buildings and will be held August 17–22, 2008. A diverse group of energy efficiency professionals from around the world will gather at this pre-eminent meeting to discuss the technological basis for, and practical implementation of, reducing energy use in buildings. Presentations and discussions will relate to the theme, "Scaling Up: Building Tomorrow's Solutions." What started out at the Summer Study nearly three decades ago as a fringe activity is now mainstream: energy efficiency in buildings. Energy efficiency now represents our best hope to avoid the worst consequences of global warming and energy resource depletion. But to achieve this potential, the energy efficiency "engine" has to be greatly expanded. New programs, technologies, and financing sources need to be developed. A new generation of energy efficiency practitioners, researchers, and policymakers needs to be trained and deployed to solve the problems we face. Do you have ideas about how to make this happen? Come share your ideas and engage in dialogue about these issues at the 2008 Summer Study. Exchange ideas with some of the leading thinkers, visionaries, and luminaries in the field while experiencing the magnificent natural setting that is Asilomar.

    The Early Bird Registration Fee for the full conference is $720; the Regular Registration Fee is $820 (both fees include a set of conference proceedings). The one-day fee is $350. All speakers must pay the registration fee.

    The conference will be conducted in a casual atmosphere conducive to developing working relationships. Dress is also casual; jeans and shorts are appropriate attire.

    Lt. Col. Charlie Brown was a rescue helicopter pilot based in Thailand at the end of the Vietnam War and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. His service record continued up to coordinating surveillance flights over Iraq’s “No Fly Zones.” Since retiring from the Air Force, he has been Vice President of the Roseville Police Association, and has been a tireless advocate for veterans rights, seniors, middle class families, and the environment. Brown nearly won this seat in 2008. Now he's back for a second shot and has a very good chance of winning.     San Ramon Valley Democrats Meetings
    We are a group of dedicated Democrats living in the San Ramon Valley who have come together to support and promote the progressive social and political principles that always have been fundamental to the Democratic Party. The San Ramon Valley is comprised of Alamo, Blackhawk, Diablo, Danville, San Ramon, and southern Walnut Creek, and members of our club come from each of those communities. We meet once a month for an educational program at Mudd's Restaurant in San Ramon, alternating between lunch on the second Tuesday, and appetizers (no-host bar) on the evening of the fourth Thursday (6:30 PM).     Internet directions usually suggest taking Almaden Expressway, which is sometimes backed up. A lower stress route is to take Bird Avenue west from 280 and follow it all the way until it dead-ends at Malone. Left on Malone, Right on Almaden Road and 2102 is on the first corner on your left.

    Weekly Vigil at Oakland Federal Building Tuesdays at Noon, 1301 Clay Street (2 blocks west of 12th St. BART station). This vigil began in the Spring of 1998, when Madeline Albright tried to gain support for a war against Iraq. The focus has changed over time, and is now calling for an end to the Iraq War and the occupation.

    WEEKLY PEACE VIGIL IN HUNTINGTON BEACH: Every Sunday, 7 PM

    It's hard for most people to imagine a world at peace. We are a very small group of people who believe that this is indeed possible and that peace will happen once enough people believe that it can. So we stand at the pier every Sunday night with a sign that says: "Visualize World Peace. It's up to you". We also believe in non-violence both physically and in our thoughts. We will discuss peace and non-violence with anyone who is rational and smile quietly at those who aren't. We hold this vigil in a spirit of dignity and respect for all as we try to build bridges with those who don't share our philosophy.

    Please bring a candle or just help us hold up our banner (no signs please; we have our banner!)
