Mole's Progressive Democrat

The Progressive Democrat Newsletter grew out of the frustration of the 2004 election. Originally intended for New York City progressives, its readership is now national. For anyone who wants to be alerted by email whenever this newsletter is updated (usually weekly), please send your email address and let me know what state you live in (so I can keep track of my readership).

Winning Locally: FOUR Women for Wisconsin

A few weeks ago I introduced you to three women running in local elections in Wisconsin who were superb candidates. Well, the Wisconsin Democratic Party informed me that I missed one. So I have to go back and highlight FOUR women for Wisconsin. They are all impressive and deserve your support.

These four women are excellent advocates for healthcare, education, and alternative energy and are future leaders who will certainly rise to higher positions in the future. Let me introduce you to Alison Page, Jessica King, Tara Johnson and Justine Kozanoglu.

    Justine Kozanoglu
    Running for WI-HD-21
(website under construction...if you are interested in volunteering for her campaign, contact me at mole333_at_gmail.com and let me know and I can pass your contact info along)

Justine Kozanoglu is running for the Wisconsin 21st State Assembly seat against a right wing fanatic who voted against emergency contraception for rape victims, and against hearing aids for hearing impaired children under 5 years old. She is an educator, involved with the Head Start program and is a member of National Association for the Education of Young Children and the Midwest Renewable Energy Association, indicating her focus on both energy issues and education.

    Tara Johnson
    Running for WI-SD-32

Tara Johnson is running for the Wisconsin 32nd State Senate seat against a right wing fanatic incumbent who voted against a bipartisan bill in the Wisconsin legislature ensuring compassion for rape victims. Tara Johnson was recruited to the Progressive Majority Farm Team in the fall of 2007 and I have featured her before. She is currently serving her fifth term on the La Crosse County Board. Tara is the former executive director of United Way. On the La Crosse County Board, she is the chair of Health and Human Services Committee and Second Vice-Chair of the board. Tara is well respected and admired for her ability to fight for progressive values while building consensus among her peers. This is an important seat to pick up on the state level.

    Alison Page
    WI-SD-10

Alison is running for the Wisconsin 10th State Senate Seat. Let me quote from the Wisconsin Lt. Governor:

Alison Page is a dream candidate – a woman who presided over the River Falls School Board for 17 years, building a solid reputation as a visionary, fiscally responsible leader who is committed to strong schools as a long-term strategy to drive growth in the area.

Alison Page’s education and experience as a healthcare administrator and an R.N. position her perfectly to provide leadership in the healthcare debate that will inevitably dominate the legislative agenda in Wisconsin and across the nation…
The contrast with her opponent couldn’t be stronger. Sheila Harsdorf is a rubber stamp for the Republican leadership – a woman without the strength to support adequate school funding; a woman who could not muster enough courage, when in the majority, to guarantee rape victims access to emergency contraception.

Sheila even voted no on a BadgerCare Plus program that would give 98% of Wisconsinites access to affordable health care. Worse still, neither she nor her colleagues can come up with an alternative plan that addresses the issue of access to quality healthcare for all.”

    Jessica King

Jessica King is running for Wisconsin's 18th Senate District. Jessica currently serves on the Oshkosh Common Council and serves on the Transit Advisory Board, Grand Opera House Advisory Board and the Energy and Environment Committee.

Jessica is a native of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. She received her high school diploma in 1993 from St. Mary Springs, Fond du Lac. Jessica received her undergraduate degree from University of Wisconsin Oshkosh (UWO) in 1998, with majors in International Studies, History and Political Science. Jessica was selected to participate in internships with the Helicopter Association International (HAI) in Washington, D.C., participated in practical study in development planning at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, and was one of six student ambassadors sent by UWO to Bangladesh in the summer 1997. Jessica also received a Wisconsin Women in Government Scholarship, which allowed her to study Medieval History at University of Cambridge, Clare College.

Jessica served as President of the International Law Society. Jessica currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Grand Opera House, the Oshkosh Rotary Club, Oshkosh Area League of Women Voters, the UWO Alumni Association, the Young Lawyers Division of the State Bar of Wisconsin, Legal Action Wisconsin, Inc., and is a Wisconsin State Bar delegate to the American Bar Association. Jessica also participates in local community events including the Rosanne Hoefel 5k Diversity Run/Walk/Roll, and the 2006 United Way Campaign.

Jessica is also a member of the Winnebago County Bar Association, the Oshkosh Community Foundation’s GEMS giving circle, and is a 2006 graduate of Leadership Oshkosh.
