Progressive Democrat Issue 117: THOUGHTS

Somewhat truncated newsletter this week. Simply put, this week has been crazy! Work has been hectic. A Daily Kos connection has put me onto a possible real estate investment in Oregon. A potential (and, as far as I know, as yet un-discussed) NYC mayoral candidate has indicated a possible announcement of candidacy with a group I help organize. The FBI (yes...FBI) has contacted me because they were interested in something I wrote about Brooklyn politics and want to consult with me on it. And on Culture Kitchen I got to be the first stop on Teresa Heinz Kerry's blog publicity tour for her conference on women's health and the environment.

So, I am not doing as much local stuff. Sorry!

I was going to have an action alert regarding the Congressional Black Caucus' alliance with Fox News to hold a Presidential forum, but the issue is now moot. The alliance is now meaningless. First John Edwards said he would refuse to have anything to do with the forum if Fox is in the deal. He also was the first to refuse to have anything to do with a forum the Nevada Democratic Party contemplated having with Fox. This time around Barack Obama (a member of the CBC!) and, a little later, Hillary Clinton, both followed Edwards' lead. That would make any such forum kind of useless, if the three front runners refuse to attend.

Makes you wonder. Why is Fox so darned eager to hold a forum for the Democratic primary? I am glad that our candidates are doing the right thing! Bravo Edwards, Obama and Clinton!

Last week someone complained that my coverage of Wisconsin issues was "weak." Well, I hope most of my readers find my newsletter worth reading. But I can't cover every state in detail every time. And if you want more coverage of your particular area, remember, I am very busy and covering a large area. So I always welcome guest articles, meaning you can get word out about things in your area if you like. I, of course, reserve the right to refuse any article or to provide my own opinion in response, and I do not endorse one Democrat over another. But if you want to see more coverage in your area, then please write something and submit it. And, of course, this week where I have had no time to focus on ANY local stuff, his complaint will be proven right. Ah, well. I am but one person.

I also got some good feedback from Co-op America about recycled paper. Co-op America is an organization I have had a relationship with for more than a decade, first purchasing from their catalog back when they had one, and now I support them through a loan. I am glad that they have come across my newsletter and I will follow up their comment in the next issue if I can.

Oh, yeah and Henry Rollins' EXCELLENT show is back on the International Film Channel. People, WATCH IT!

Progressive Democrat Issue 117: INVESTING IN THE FUTURE, NOT THE PAST

Energy will be one of our number one issues in coming years. The conflicting pull of increased demand overwhelming our grid and the need to cut carbon emissions to battle global warming before our 10-year window has passed. Both of these conflicting needs are critical needs and we have to find a way to address both.

The 21st century solutions, as seen by scientists, is increased efficiency, reforestation and new energy solutions like wind, biofuels, geothermal, tidal, and solar energy. But too often the American solution is a 19th century solution: coal. Using dirty coal, which affects our health, and adds carbon and pollutants to the atmosphere, is a relatively cheap solution to increased energy demand...but is completely stupid when we have only 10 short years to address global warming. Clean coal, which still adds carbon to the atmosphere but doesn't have as many problems as dirty coal, costs about the same as wind power...which is one of the cleanest and most practical solutions we have. Denmark, a much smaller economy than our own, generates more wind energy than the entire United States.

One problem is investment trends. Banks are slow to change their investment practices. The Union of Concerned Scientists is lobbying banks to change their investment practices to favor alternative energy over coal. I should note that I personally have profited from investing in both solar and geothermal.

This action alert comes from the Union of Concerned Scientists:

Across the United States, utilities are proposing the construction of more than 150 coal-fired power plants...

Almost all of the proposed plants would use conventional coal-burning technology. Only 16 percent of the facilities would gasify the coal first to remove mercury, sulfur, and particulates. If built, the plants would increase global warming pollution from the electrical sector by 25 percent over 2004 levels. With climate regulations expected in the next few years, the proposed coal plants would put investors and ratepayers at risk of increased costs from carbon emissions and make it virtually impossible for the United States to bring emissions down to levels scientists say are needed to prevent the worst effects of global warming.

A coalition of national groups are working to stop the coal rush in its tracks by persuading the Wall Street Seven to stop investing in coal facilities because it does not make economic sense...

The Wall Street Seven, a group of banks including JP Morgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers, Credit Suisse, Merrill Lynch, Citigroup, and Morgan Stanley, are the major funders for the new plants. Please send a letter calling on these banks to end their support for proposed coal plants and to help finance clean, renewable energy instead.

Wind power has been viable since at least 1995 and is competative with clean coal. Geothermal, where possible, is also current technology. Solar is on the cusp of economic viability. Biofuels and wind in particular can be used to help rebuild the economy of America's heartland, both farmers and the rust belt. These are the solutions we have available to us right now...so why are we still using a 19th century solution?

Brownback Better at Double-Talk Rather Than Honest Talk
Monday, March 26, 2007

Des Moines, IA – Senator Sam Brownback made a return trip to Iowa today, his fourth visit to Iowa since the beginning of the year. Brownback heads back to Iowa with many unanswered questions about the situation in Iraq. Iowa voters deserve honest talk by Brownback, not the double-talk he has presented.

“Senator Brownback says the current situation in Iraq must change, yet he continues to vote against solutions,” said Carrie Giddins, communications director for the Iowa Democratic Party. “The last time the Senator was here he said the two main issues of his campaign were the economy and taxes [Quad-City Times, 02/11/07]. Both important issues, but also an obvious attempt to avoid talking about the dire situation in Iraq.”

Honest Talk(?):
Brownback Said Current Situation in Iraq Must Change. Brownback said, 'We cannot face the public again in 2008 with the current situation still in hand for the United States. We have to get to a political solution in the region.'" [This Week, ABC News, 11/26/06]

Double-Talk:
Yet. Brownback Voted Against the Senate Bill Which Calls for a Solution to Bush's Open-Ended War. "Republican Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback defended his vote against a House resolution calling to pull troops out of Iraq by 2008, saying a long-term political solution will require a military presence for 'some length of time.'" [Peoria Journal-Star, 3/17/07]

Honest Talk (?):
Brownback Says He Supports "Substantial" Troop Reductions in Iraq within Next Year. Brownback said that he supports "substantial" troop reductions in Iraq within the next year; however, the Senator failed to commit to a timetable for withdrawal. "They have to take control of their country," said Brownback in a teleconference with Kansas journalists. "As far as setting a hard date to be out and I don't think that would be wise." The Senator said he expects U.S. forces to be garrisoned around Iraq despite troop reductions. [The Wichita Eagle, 03/01/06]

Double-Talk:
Yet. Brownback Supported the President's Plan to Send Additional Troops. "Senate Republicans [including Brownback] yesterday blocked a resolution that would have condemned President Bush's plan to send an additional 21,500 troops to Iraq. On a 49-47 vote that largely followed partisan lines, Democrats fell 11 "ayes" short of the 60 needed to bring about a vote on the resolution, which is nonbinding but is widely viewed as a declaration of no confidence in the continued mission of the Iraq war and Mr. Bush's handling of it. [The Washington Times, 2/6/07]

Honest Talk (?):
Brownback Claims He Wants To Work With Democrats on Iraq. Brownback said he is committed to achieving victory in Iraq -- something he said cannot be attained without a political solution in the war-torn region as well as support from Democrats. “I am for winning and not pulling out," he said. "We have to get a political answer in place. I (also) don't think we can operate a war when one party is for it and one party is against it. We have to engage the Democrats on this." [Iowapolitics.com, 3/17/07]

Double-Talk:
But. Brownback Refused to Support a Democratic Resolution. "Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback said Thursday he would not support a resolution drafted by Democrats opposing President Bush's Iraq plan, but he could back a rival proposal that contains less partisan language. Despite his opposition to the resolution, Brownback he remains against the idea of sending more troops to Iraq." [AP, 1/25/07]

Progressive Democrat Issue 117: DC MARCH FOR VOTING RIGHTS

This comes from Twenty-First Century Democrats:

Currently, more than 500,000 Americans living in our nation's capital have no vote in Congress to represent their interests. We have no vote on whether we go to war or not, no vote on jobs, no vote for health care, no vote on how the taxes we pay are spent by the U.S. Congress, no vote on any issues before Congress.

Progressive Democrat Issue 117: NYC GROUPS AND EVENTS

Local involvement is really what wins elections. Please get involved. I have made friends, met many of my elected officials who now (sometimes!) actually listen to me, and have really felt like I am making a difference. From time to time I will also post events going on, but mostly this is a list of organizations in your area. If I have missed any, please let me know.

GENERAL INTEREST:


BROOKLYN GROUPS AND EVENTS:

NEW BROOKLYN POLITICAL CLUB: Shirley Chisholm Political Collective; founded by some of my good friends including Chris Owens, Bill Batson and Raul Rothblatt. Focuses mainly on Prospect Heights neighborhood but with wider community interests as well. Joy and I plan on helping out. Meets second Saturday of each month for now, 4-6PM, Duryea Presbytarian Church, Sterling Pl. and Underhill Ave., Prospect Heights, Brooklyn.

Brooklyn Critical Mass:
Critical Mass is a monthly celebration of bicycles and other nonpolluting means of transportation, exercising our right to the road. Critical Mass is a movement, not an organization; no two riders participate for exactly the same reason. Brooklyn Critical Mass started rolling in 2004.

Brooklyn rides are the Second Friday of every month, 7:00 p.m., meeting at Grand Army Plaza. Come out and join Critical Mass in Brooklyn. Celebrate cycling, and assert your right to the road -- Brooklyn style!

Brooklyn Democrats for Change: covering Bay Ridge, Fort Hamilton, Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst, and Bath Beach; Meets the 1st Thursday of the month at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Muller Conference Room, 7420 4th Avenue Bay Ridge.


NEW TIME: Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats (CBID) (mostly covers Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, and Kensington). My wife, Joy, is now on the executive board and is the corresponding secretary of this club. This club is very grassroots and worked very hard for progressive candidates in the recent primary. They need more people if we want to strengthen the grassroots. If you are not yet a member, please come to the next meeting and join. Membership is cheap! Meetings are usually held on the fourth Thursday of every month (NEW TIME) at 7:30 PM at the Park Slope United Methodist Church, 6th Ave. & 8th Street in the basement (enter through the garden gate on 6th Ave).


Independent Neighborhood Democrats (IND): I usually work with this club. They cover the 52nd Assembly district, covering Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill. Meetings are usually held on the third Thursday of every month at 7 PM at their clubhouse 489 Court St. in Carroll Gardens.


New Democratic Majority in Brooklyn: Originally an outgrowth of the Dean campaign, NDM is one of the more active progressive organizations around. This is the Brooklyn branch of that organization and we are still building our membership. I will be a co-host of this meeting. We meet the 2nd Thursday of every month (recently changed) at the 5th Ave. Ozzie’s in Park Slope, 249 5th Ave (intersection of 5th and Garfield) at 7 PM. California is pretty big, so mostly what I will do is list the resources you can use to find out what's going on in your area. If you know of a group, send me info!

California for Democracy: This is the California branch of Howard Dean's Democracy for America movement. There are local meetings all over the state (listed on the left hand side of the state website). I participate in my local group and this is one of the ways I get to meet lots of interesting politicians, all of whom are trying to get our support. If you only do one kind of political activism, it should be this! If you join, tell them I sent you...it can't hurt for them to know I'm helping them out! There are also events listed as well as blogs for discussion. This is the ultimate in progressive grassroots! LOS ANGELES AREA:

Progressive Los Angeles Network (PLAN): The Progressive Los Angeles Network (PLAN) was formally launched in December 1999. PLAN was founded and built on the success of the 1998 Progressive L.A. Conference which was co-sponsored by a number of local and national institutions and organizations including Occidental College, The Nation Institute, Liberty Hill Foundation, LA Weekly and the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor. The Progressive LA Conference was an overwhelming success and gave participants a sense that the growth of a wide variety of progressive social movements had reached an important threshold. As a result, attendees and others within the progressive movement in Los Angeles expressed a desire to participate in further discussion about how to develop a common agenda that is community based, inclusive and brings together the wealth of experience and knowledge of organizers, activists, and researchers. ORANGE COUNTY AREA:

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA:

Grassrootswest was founded in 2004 as a way to unite Northbay Democrats, Greens, Independents, and even Republicans in getting George Bush out of office. After the stolen election of 2004 it became clear that there still was a need to bridge the divide between the various progressive organizations in the San Francisco North Bay. So their work of bypassing the corporate media, and building alliances of progressives continues to this day. Check them out.

I apologize for lumping such diverse states together under "Midwest," but to date I don't have enough readers in any one Midwestern state to give any of them their own attention the way I do with Virginia, NYC and California. Get me more readers in YOUR state and I will happily put more effort into writing about that state. Until then, these are the four Midwestern region states that I get some readership from regularly.

WISCONSIN FAIR TRADE COALITION: The Wisconsin Fair Trade Coalition is a statewide collaboration of labor, environmental, consumer, family farm and interfaith groups founded in 1994 during the fight over the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). They are united in a common belief that international trade and investment are not ends unto themselves, but instead must be viewed as a means for achieving other societal goals including economic justice, human rights, healthy communities and a sound environment. First, I will highlight the very, VERY important Indiana Progressives PAC. Indiana Progressives believe to win nationally we must first win locally. This is exactly the kind of organization we need in Indiana to deliver a populist progressive message right to the voters.


Evolution Education Institute (EEI) is a national professional development program that had it's origins in the Michigan Scientific Evolution Education Initiative (MSEEI). The MSEEI was administered by the Michigan Science Teacher's Association and was funded by an Eisenhower Higher Education Competitive Grant through the Michigan Department of Education (MDOE) from 1999-2002. The mission of the MSEEI was to provide Michigan teachers and pre-service teacher education students with the necessary content, pedagogy and support system to effectively teach scientific evolution. The Evolution Education Institute expands upon the MSEEI model and brings it to a national audience. he mission of the Evolution Education Institute (EEI) is to promote the understanding of evolution and natural selection theory within the educational community and society at-large and to advocate for its inclusion in science curricula in a manner commensurate with its importance to modern scientific thought. This issue is particularly important to me (I'm a biologist myself!). So please, help out EEI.

Drinking Liberally in Michigan: Promoting democracy one pint at a time! Drinking liberally is a social organization with chapters nationwide. There are three Michigan Drinking Liberally groups (see below). If there isn't one near you, you can set one up at the Drinking Liberally website. If you don't like bars, I have always thought non-drinkers could set up their own drinking liberally groups in coffee houses. Here are the current Michigan groups:

Ann Arbor, Michigan
