Mole's Progressive Democrat

The Progressive Democrat Newsletter grew out of the frustration of the 2004 election. Originally intended for New York City progressives, its readership is now national. For anyone who wants to be alerted by email whenever this newsletter is updated (usually weekly), please send your email address and let me know what state you live in (so I can keep track of my readership).

Progressive Democrat Issue 108: NYC FOCUS

Wal-Mart is trying yet again to enter NYC. So far they have been blocked from building in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island by a pretty broad coalition, including Democrats and Republicans, small business groups, environmental groups, community groups, etc. But they keep trying.

Wal-Mart's latest attempt to sneak into NYC is taking place in Brooklyn at Allbee Square. On last Thursday there was a rally against Wal-Mart at Allbee Square. It seems the coalition behind that rally may have scored another victory: the developer of Allbee Square publicly stated that he will not allow a Wal-Mart in the Gallery. So it looks like we may have blocked them again. But we need to keep up the pressure. First, find out the facts. Here is an outline of why Wal-Mart is bad for our community. Want more detail, find more detailed reports here.

Next, write your local politicians and the media expressing your opinion of Wal-Mart. And what the hell, write Wal-Mart and tell them to keep out of your neighborhood. Keep up the pressure!
