Mole's Progressive Democrat

The Progressive Democrat Newsletter grew out of the frustration of the 2004 election. Originally intended for New York City progressives, its readership is now national. For anyone who wants to be alerted by email whenever this newsletter is updated (usually weekly), please send your email address and let me know what state you live in (so I can keep track of my readership).

Progressive Democrat Issue 103: CALIFORNIA FOCUS: Clean Elections in San Diego

San Diego has had a couple of fairly dubious elections recently, going the route of Florida and Ohio. Even former mayor of San Diego and right wing talk show host Roger Hedgecock is sounding the alarm. A new organization has formed called the San Diego Alliance for Clean Elections. Here's what they have to say about themselves:

We are a nonpartisan grassroots organization whose members are citizens from diverse backgrounds seeking to reform our ailing electoral system and restore the power to the public by reducing the undue influence of money over the candidates and political parties under the current system. We aim to provide an alternative form of campaign funding that would compete with traditionally funded candidates for the citizens’ votes. We believe this form of campaign funding will draw a more diverse and better pool of candidates and will offer incumbents an alternative to traditional fundraising. We believe this is the reform that enables all other necessary reforms and puts the government in control of the People.

I focus considerably on the issue of voting machines. But there are other reforms that are needed as well. This organization is doing what it should to try and get clean elections. Please check them out and support them.
