    Progressive Democrat Issue 76: THOUGHTS

The following are some thoughts I have on immigration issues and what is being forgotten in the nation's discussion. People who have read it elsewhere have assumed I unequivocally support illegal immigration. I don't. Illegal means illegal. What I am presenting is where we should be STARTING from when we discuss immigration issues: the realization that we are a nation of immigrants and we should never forget that whatever view we take on immigration.

America’s latest anti-immigration fad is nothing new. Nor is the denial many people have in America of the irony of this anti-immigration history in America. We have a long history as the anti-immigrant nation of immigrants.

When did your ancestors come to America? Personally, my great-grandparents and at least one grandparent were immigrants. And in all honesty, I do not know the legal status of most of my ancestors when they came over. I think I have found Ellis Island reocords for some, but some came by unusual routes through South America, or came before Ellis Island. Even those I think I found records for the names are all confused and it may not be them. I don't know if my ancestors came legally or illegally or some of both.

Native Americans are the only non-immigrants to America. Otherwise we ALL are descendents of immigrants. So why the self-hatred?

Most of us had ancestors who faced similar hatred when they first came over. Italians, Irish, Jews, Catholics, Chinese, Japanese, etc. etc. all faced legal obstacles to immigration and faced sometimes armed and dangerous opposition from anti-immigrant groups. All of these groups have been viewed with the same disdain and fear as their descendents now pour upon more recent immigrants.

We have become what our ancestors had to overcome.

America has a short memory. This short memory makes it very difficult for us to intelligently discuss and consider complicated issues. Racism in America can never be faced and overcome as long as we are in denial of our past as a slave nation. We were founded with slavery written into our Constitution and as a large part of our economy. But we do our best to deny that past, underestimating the effect slavery had on the social structure of our nation and even denying that our Civil War was about slavery. In the lead up to the Civil War many debates in Congress, hotly contested elections and most controversial essays and literature focused on slavery. Why isn’t Cuba a state within the Union? Because of a fear that it would be added as another slave state, thus disturbing the delicate balance in Congress between free and slave states. Even after the Civil War we have a blind spot regarding slavery. We learn that the post-Civil War government was made up of “carpetbaggers” and “scalawags” forced upon the poor South. In reality, the main targets of the early KKK were LOCAL politicians, white and black, who supported equal rights for freed slaves. But we can’t face the fact that America isn’t always good and righteous. We have to sugar coat our past. But the result for the present is we fail to face up to racial issues in this nation, perpetuating inequalities and hatreds that were formed because we were a nation built on slavery.

Immigration is another blind spot. No one becomes more anti-immigrant than those whose grandparents and great-grandparents were immigrants. By the third generation we are Americans. We become so American that we see ourselves as “native” and look down on anyone who is first or second generation. We forget that we were once in the same position as those who are now being looked down upon.

The oddest thing about this is that it becomes racial even though it cuts across race in many ways. This is best illustrated in a graffito I once saw in a bathroom at NYU. One person wrote, “I hate white people.” The response was: “The go back to where you came from.”

Go back to where you came from…

This assumes that American identity is white identity and that anyone who isn’t white MUST be an immigrant!

Many Hispanic and black families, and all native American families have roots in American soil going back WAY before most American whites set foot here. There is no reason to assume that someone who isn’t white must be a more recent immigrant than a white person. The vast majority of Southern black families have been in America longer than my family.

There is a false connection with race that is often assumed by all sides. But immigration cuts across race. “Southern” blacks and Caribbean blacks are at odds over immigration. Even Mexican descended families and El Salvadoran families are at odds.

What is missing from the national debate about immigration is an honest admission that we are a nation of immigrants and ALWAYS HAVE BEEN. Immigrants built our railroads. Our agriculture has always been dependent on immigrants, from my German homesteading ancestors in Iowa to today’s migrant workers. Our labor movement was started mainly by immigrant, mainly Jewish, garment workers.

I am all for empowering Native Americans. But I remember that I am a grandchild of immigrants. And I know that many of those most fearful of immigrants today are probably second and third generation Americans. We cannot discuss the issue of immigration unless we are honest about our own immigrant past and the contributions immigrants have given to our society. Only when we face these historical facts can we honestly and objectively consider the role of immigration in our society today.

Progressive Democrat Issue 76: A WINGNUT REPENTS VOTING FOR BUSH

This comes from a real wing nut. He STILL is a wing nut…but he has partly come to his senses.

    By Doug McIntyre
    Host, McIntyre in the Morning
    Talk Radio 790 KABC

I was wrong to have voted for George W. Bush. In historic terms, I believe George W. Bush is the worst two-term President in the history of the country. Worse than Grant. I also believe a case can be made that he’s the worst President, period.

In 2000, I was a McCain guy. I wasn’t sure about the Texas Governor. He had name recognition and a lot of money behind him, but other than that? What? Still, I was sick of all the Clinton shenanigans and the thought of President Gore was… unthinkable. So, GWB became my guy.

For the first few months he was just flubbing along like most new Presidents, no great shakes, but no disasters either. He cut taxes and I like tax cuts.

Then September 11th happened. September 11th changed everything for me, like it did for so many of you. After September 11th, all the intramural idiocy of American politics stopped being funny. We had been attacked by a vicious and determined enemy and it was time for all of us to row in the same direction.

And we did for the blink of an eye. I believed the President when he said we were going to hunt down Bin Laden and all those responsible for the 9-11 murders. I believed President Bush when he said we would go after the terrorists and the nations that harbored them.

I supported the President when he sent our troops into Afghanistan, after all, that’s where the Taliban was, that’s where al-Qaida trained the killers, that’s where Bin Laden was.

And I cheered when we quickly toppled the Taliban government, but winced when we let Bin Laden escape from Tora-Bora.

Then, the talk turned to Iraq and I winced again.

I thought the connection to 9-11 was sketchy at best. But Colin Powell impressed me at the UN, and Tony Blair was in, and after all, he was a Clinton guy, not a Bush guy, so I thought the case had to be strong. I was worried though, because I had read the Wolfowitz paper, “The Project for the New American Century.” It’s been around since ‘92, and it raised alarm bells because it was based on a theory, “Democratizing the Middle East” and I prefer pragmatism over theory. I was worried because Iraq was being justified on a radical new basis, “pre-emptive war.” Any time we do something without historical precedent I get nervous.

But the President shifted the argument to WMDs and the urgent threat of Iraq getting atomic weapons. The debate turned to Saddam passing nukes on to terror groups. After 9-11, the risk was too great. As the President said, “The next smoking gun might be a mushroom cloud.” At least that’s what I thought at the time…

I have watched the President say the commanders on the ground will make the battlefield decisions, and the war won’t be run from Washington. Yet, politics has consistently determined what the troops can and can’t do on the ground and any commander who did not go along with the administration was sacked, and in some cases, maligned.

I watched and tried to justify the looting in Iraq after the fall of Saddam. I watched and tried to justify the dismantling of the entire Iraqi army. I tired to explain the complexities of building a functional new Iraqi army. I urged patience when no WMDs were found. Then the Vice President told us we were in the “waning days of the insurgency.” And I started wincing again. The President says we have to stay the course but what if it’s the wrong course?

It was the wrong course. All of it was wrong. We are not on the road to victory. We’re about to slink home with our tail between our legs, leaving civil war in Iraq and a nuclear armed Iran in our wake. Bali was bombed. Madrid was bombed. London was bombed. And Bin Laden is still making tapes. It’s unspeakable. The liberal media didn’t create this reality, bad policy did.

After five years of carefully watching George W. Bush I’ve reached the conclusion he’s either grossly incompetent, or a hand puppet for a gaggle of detached theorists with their own private view of how the world works. Or both…

Pretty strong stuff from someone who bought into Bush’s lies. Bush is LOSING…our job is to make sure they cannot, CANNOT pull off a win in 2006 by lying, cheating or stealing. And they will try.

Progressive Democrat Issue 76: WINNING CONGRESS: Three Western States and Frontier PAC

I spend a great deal (probably too much) time analyzing Congressional races across the nation. I look at things said on blogs. I look at what the Democrats are targeting and what the Republicans seem most scared of losing. I even pay attention to what BBC News calls the states to watch in 2006. I also focus on finding the most corrupt Republicans and look at how to best target them. I think about what we need to win and what long shot races we can MAKE winable if we try.

From these various musings I have started putting together various Act Blue sites designed to help win big in particular states where I consider victory particularly within reach and particularly sweet. The states I am choosing are ones where particularly close, hot races can be combined with races that can be TURNED competative if we can make corruption a big issue AND also throw in some long shot but still possible races. In short, I am trying to focus people's attention now so we can build up to victory by November rather than waiting until the last minute.

I started this effort focusing on states where I thought the meme of "Sweeping" the state was worth exploring. This came from a panicked post on a NY Republican site expressing terror that Democrats might sweep all the Congressional seats in NY State. That was a fear I really wanted to feed...and maybe even help bring to reality. So I started with a Sweep NY State ACT Blue Page which has already collected $650 to target five Congressional races. I do want to continue the Sweep NY State meme, but that isn't what I want to focus on now. Right now I want to focus regionally...a region where collective effort from all around the nation can really win big in 2006 and set up for winning in 2008.

I want to focus on the Western States. Remember in 2004 the wonderful and unexpected win in Montana on a state level. This was a sign that the Democrats COULD deliver a message that would work in the Western States. Analyzing who is targeting what, where corruption is rife and where there are some really promising Democratic candidates, I want to introduce you to three Act Blue sites I have designed to help us win big in the Western States this year. With your help we can really route the Republicans in three carefully selected states.

I want to emphasize that this strategy is NOT intended to be an exclusive or even primary strategy. But I think it is one that will have some great pay offs this year and going into 2008, strengthening gains in Western States that straddle a line between blue and red and which can be solidly taken for the true blue.

Let me begin with an Act Blue site I have already introduced and which has already collected $225: my Blue Nevada site. Nevada is considered one of the Purple States, very finely balanced between red and blue. I think this year is the year to turn it solid blue. First off, we have Jack Carter, son of Nobel Laureate and former President Jimmy Carter. Jack Carter is a great candidate with integrity and a real populist message that is going to work in the West. If we want to retake the Senate, I think this race is a must win. There are also two House races in Nevada and here is where I think we have a shot, albeit a long shot, at Sweeping Nevada. One of these House races, NV-3, is a genuinely close race, one of the 10 House seats the Republicans most fear losing. If we can win BOTH the Nevada Senate AND NV-3, we will have gone a long way to turning Nevada solid blue. But there is one more race worth considering: NV-2. This is not seen as a close race, BUT...it is an open seat this year and we all know that open seats are opportunities NOT TO BE MISSED. A concerted web-based effort to help out NV-Sen, NV-2 and NV-3 could just push the whole state into our camp. Hence, my Blue Nevada site. Please help take Nevada.

Next I want to introduce two new Act Blue sites I have made. Both are virgins so YOU could be the first to contribute.

First there is my Blue Montana site which gives us an opportunity not only to follow up on the wonderful victories in Montana in 2004, but to actually Sweep Montana. First off there is the Montana Senate race. This is one of the most important Senate races in 2006 because the seat is currently held by one of the most corrupt Republicans in the Senate. For this reason, Montana is listed by BBC news as one of the states to watch this year. Two great Democrats are fighting it out as to which has the honor of taking down Conrad Burns for his disgusting corruption. Both Democratic candidates are out-polling Burns, showing that Montana is sick of Republican corruption. We can win this seat and, like the NV Senate race, this is a must-win if we want to recapture the Senate. But there is also a House race to be won in Montana. This is more of a long shot than the Senate race, but BOTH are state-wide races and so will be determined by the same voters. A competative Senate race can make this House race competative...and if we can help the Democrat in the House race, it will also help our candidate beat Conrad Burns. Please donate to my Blue Montana site and help complete the victory that we started in Montana in 2004.

Finally I want to introduce my Blue New Mexico Act Blue Site. New Mexico is another one of those very Purple states balanced between red and blue. And it is one that we can turn solid blue with a little effort. First there is the NM-1 House race. The Republican incumbent, Heather Wilson has taken more money from Exxon/Mobil's PAC than any other New Mexico politician - $5,000 already in this cycle, and $27,000 since 2000. She took $4,000 from Halliburton's PAC in the 2004 cycle. She is the EPITOME of what I call a corrupt Halliburton Republican. The Democratic opponant is two-term state Attorney General Patricia Madrid. An extraordinarily well-qualified candidate, Madrid seems poised to be a leading Democrat from the West. This race is another must win this election cycle. NM-2 is not as hot a race as NM-1, but it is worth fighting hard for because if we win both we Sweep NM, and even if we merely come close, this kind of bold move can help turn New Mexico solid Blue by 2008. So please check out my Blue New Mexico and help at least NM-1 if not also NM-2.

On all three of these pages I include Frontier PAC. They are leading the way in delivering a soldly populist and progressive Democratic message throughout the Western States. I strongly advise giving them some love.

I should note that donating through Act Blue is very efficient because it keeps the candidates' costs low. And you can donate as little as $5...or as much as legally allowed by Federal and State regulations. But we WON'T win this year if we don't focus now.

Progressive Democrat Issue 76: Fighting Companies that Collaborate with Spies

Alomst every phone company caved in and handed our private phone information to the Federal Government. To put it mildly, I would call this lousy customer service! Verizon, AT+T, etc. are collaborating with spies!

But there is an option...and I have used them for my long distance service for years. Working Assets is the only telephone company participating in the ACLU's lawsuit against the National Security Agency. We believe that the warrantless monitoring of phone conversations ordered by the Bush administration is illegal and unacceptable. We oppose the sale of domestic calling records to the NSA by AT&T, BellSouth and Verizon.

SWITCH TO WORKING ASSETS! They offer long distance and cell phone service.

Progressive Democrat Issue 76: NYC FOCUS

The FBI is investigating the NYPD's actions during the 2004 Republican Convention protests. Starting with the RNC protests, the NYPD has taken fairly draconian methods of dealing with protesters. I witnessed a little of this when I saw the NYPD use motor scooters for crowd control, actually pushing into the crowd with their scooters...and the cops were not in uniform, making it seem like it was an attack by hoodlums. More recently, I saw on Current TV footage of NYPD officers (out of uniform) actually antagonizing protesters to start a fight so they could arrest people.

Well, it looks like some of these practices are going to bite the NYPD in the ass:

F.B.I. Is Seeking to Interview Jailed Activists

    By AL BAKER

As part of a continuing criminal civil rights investigation of the New York Police Department, the F.B.I. is seeking to interview protesters who were arrested in 2004 during the Republican National Convention and then had the charges against them dismissed. Investigators are specifically seeking one protester whose case prompted the federal inquiry.

Agents from the New York office of the F.B.I. have sent a letter to the New York Civil Liberties Union asking for help in identifying and finding those whose arrests and prosecutions were dismissed based on contradictory videotape evidence.

"We are attempting to determine if any police officers' conduct violated federal civil rights statutes," said the two_page letter, dated May 11, which was sent by agents from the New York field office of the F.B.I.

The NYPD have a very tough job. I appreciate what they do. But under Bloomberg the civil rights of dissenters have been stepped on repeatedly and the NYPD have been his method of choice for doing so. Norm Seigel has been doing a lot to help dissenters express their first amendment rights in NYC dispite Bloomberg's attacks on those rights. I hope this FBI investigation will help stop Bloomerg and the NYPD from treading on our rights.

If you are or know of a protester who was arrested, please contact the New York Civil Liberties Union regarding the FBI investigation.

And, by the way...where has the Public Advocate been all this time? Betsy? No advocacy for the public? Contact the media and complain about the mayor's and NYPD's bad record on civil rights and the lack of action from the Public Advocate.

Progressive Democrat Issue 76: BROOKLYN COMMUNITY EVENT

Well, today was supposed to be the "Press Unveiling" of the new mural, designed by Park Slope school children, including my step-daughter, at Commerce Bank on 5th Ave. and 1st Street. Well, after rushing to get a couple of hours work done, I rushed back home to Brooklyn to be there...but the event seems to have been rained out. No one was there but the rain poured down. And the bank said everything would be on Sunday. So right back to work...only to see the sun coming out now.

So, the official unveiling of the "American Dream" mural at Commerce Bank at 269 Fifth Ave. in Park Slope, Brooklyn is Sunday, May 21st at 1 PM. The mural is way cool...particularly the central panel! Rumor has it that Marty Markowitz may be there in person. So “Develop Don’t Destroy Brooklyn” T-shirts may be acceptable garb…

CRITCAL MASS BICYCLE MOVEMENT! Critical Mass is a bicyclist movement (NOT an organized group!) that holds weekly protests all over the world to protest pollution. Rides are the last Friday of every month starting in Union Sq. Park North, 7PM! At a DFNYC meeting attended by Norm Seigel, Norm used Critical Mass as an example of the kind of activism that NYC needs most and the way Bloomberg is trying to squelch our rights and our voices. Critical Mass deserves our help. According to Bloomberg, my inclusion of this in my newsletter is probably illegal. Well, I refuse to let Bloomberg tell me what I can and cannot write in my Newsletter.

There is more you can do to support Critical Mass. This comes from a reader in Manhattan:

To help keep people involved in Critical Mass, people who might be sacred off because of renewed aggressiveness by the police, I have started a pledge drive that sponsors arrestees. This is a great way for people to stay involved in Critical Mass, stay on top of the issue, and use the NYPD and Bloomberg's tactics to work for us not against us. I am pledging $2 per arrestee, and the money will go to the Legal Aid Society. Pledges are made on the honor system. The more bicyclists the cops arrest the more money for defending civil rights is raised.

Progressive Democrat Issue 76: URGENT NATIONAL ACTION

Above I describe how we all can donate a little money to campaigns in three key states to win big in November. But winning back congress starts JUNE 6TH with the FIRST CONGRESSIONAL RACE OF THE YEAR. In a special election to replace the disgraced Republican Randy Cunningham (now in jail!!) Democrat Francine Busby came in first in the open primary, but now has to beat the full efforts of the Republican Party.

This could be our first pick up of the year and if we win it we will illustrate the importance of defeating corrupt Republicans and we will pick up a seat that has been solidly Republican for decades. Busby has been tenuously AHEAD in recent polls.

You can help. MoveOn.org has phonebanking going on that you can participate in from anywhere in the nation. The goal is to push for a high Democratic turnout simply by calling Democrats and remind them to vote.

We have less than two weeks to help elect progressive Francine Busby to Congress in a Calfornia special election. Busby faces a tough fight, but if 10,000 MoveOn members each contact just 15 voters in the district, we can help her win and learn key lessons that will lead to victory in November.
Just sign up here and we'll give you the names of voters to call and instructions on what to say.

Remember, you must be able to be on the phone (a land line or cell phone) and on the Internet at the same time.

Let’s win this one folks. It will set the tone for the entire year.

Common Cause: Common Cause is a major force in Progressive Politics. It was founded in 1970 (by a Republican, mind you!) to counter the influence of special interests in Washington. Today they work on many of the same issues I am trying to highlight. Check out the NJ Common Cause website.

Here is how you can find your local Dem clubs. Go to HERE and click on your county.

Drinking Liberally gives like-minded, left-leaning individuals a place to talk politics. You don't need to be a policy expert and this isn't a book club - just come and learn from peers, trade jokes, vent frustration and hang out in an environment where it's not taboo to talk politics. Progressive Democrat Issue 76: GETTING LOCAL AROUND THE NATION

This is how our coalition will be built: through out local action. Our success depends on you and your activism. There are many ways you can get active. Below I try to provide a good variety of options and urge you all to find a couple that suit you. These groups below are the way we can get our country back. If we don’t get involved we won’t win in 2006 and beyond. Joy and I are currently involved in a few groups plus our own organizing efforts bringing different groups together and we are finding it a good boost to our social life. We are meeting cool people and it makes us get out a couple of times a month more than we would otherwise.

    Finding your local groups:

Democracy for America: Founded by Howard Dean, now run by his brother Jim Dean, this group is very effective at the local grass roots. Many think this is the future of the Democratic Party. I think this is partly true, though the neighborhood Dem party clubs will continue to be vital to our efforts as well. This is a group that you really should be active in either by joining a local meetup or starting one of your own.

The Democratic Party: Now that Howard Dean is in the driver’s seat I am hoping the Democrats will become more effective on the local level. One of the main complaints against the DNC in the past couple of elections is that they didn’t help the local parties in most parts of the nation. If you go to the DNC website and find the “Get Local” pull down menu on the left, you can find your local Dem groups. I strongly urge you to get involved with your local Dem club since it is often these groups that actually do much of the footwork to win each district.

Critical Mass: Critical Mass is a bicyclist movement (NOT an organized group!) that holds weekly protests all over the world to protest pollution. Go here to find the closest Critical Mass action in your area (site covers ALL of North America).

Wellstone Action: Paul Wellstone started something in Minnesota and his death hasn’t stopped it. Wellstone’s family is continuing his work and expanding it throughout the nation. Wellstone Action trains activists and grassroots candidates and they did very well in the last election. I urge you to look into any nearby Wellstone Action events.

Common Cause: Common Cause is a major force in Progressive Politics. It was founded in 1970 (by a Republican, mind you!) to counter the influence of special interests in Washington. Today they work on many of the same issues I am trying to highlight. Look for your state’s Common Cause organization.

To find the League of Conservation Voters branch in your state, CLICK HERE. This is the group you should be involved with if the environment is your thing.

To find the NARAL branch in your state, CLICK HERE. This is the group you should be involved with if choice is your thing.

Finally I suggest Americans for Democratic Action. ADA is a progressive branch of the Democratic Party. Email: adaction@ix.netcom.com for info on local groups.
