About Governor Warner:
One of the most popular governors in the history of Virginia polling, Governor Warner left office in January 2006 after serving the one four-year term permitted under Virginia state law. Despite inheriting a $6 billion budget deficit, Governor Warner and the Legislature brought fiscal discipline and government reforms that helped turn the deficit into a surplus and provided the largest increase in education funding in Virginia history.
As Chairman of the National Governor’s Association, Governor Warner led a national effort to Redesign the American High School for students headed to college or into the workforce. In the final year of his term, Virginia was rated the best managed state in the nation by Governing Magazine. Under Governor Warner’s leadership, Virginia adopted the strictest water quality standards in the nation for the Chesapeake Bay watershed. He also led an effort to turn around a poor performing children’s health insurance program and sign up 98 percent of all eligible children.
TIME Magazine called Governor Warner one of “America’s 5 Best Governors” in its November 2005 issue, and Newsweek dubbed him one of two leaders to watch in the politics section of its “Who’s Next” issue in January.
