Progressive Democrat Issue 55: VIRGINIA GROUPS AND EVENTS
Democracy for America: One of the best ways to get active! FIND YOUR LOCAL DFA MEETUP AND GET INVOLVED!
Wednesday, December 14, 6:30–9:00 pm. The Progressives Happy Hour at Capitol City Brewing in Shirlington. Join co-hosts Virginia Grassroots Coalition, Alexandria Democratic Committee, and Allison Silberberg (of redefeat Bush fame.) as we celebrate that Virginia will stay BLUE with Tim Kaine and our dynamic Democratic team! We salute those who won; we salute those who ran and gave it their best shot; and we salute Governor Mark Warner, House Delegate Marian Van Landingham and our local elected officials. One part holiday celebration, one part thanks to all those hands who made all the wins possible and one part focus on our future campaigns and wins! Connect with people you haven’t seen in awhile and talk with local elected officials. Come on by for good food, drink, and camraderie. Our space at Cap City is smoke-free and family-friendly! So please bring the whole family!
We'll be in the Brewer's Room off to the left (Left IS approporiate here). No cover charge. Cash Bar. Appetizers (Not enough to make a meal) will be provided by the hosts, but stay for dinner, drinks, and networking.
If you can, please bring canned goods (or nonperishables), and we'll donate all the goods to ALIVE! House, a fantastic nonprofit in Old Town Alexandria that helps women and families achieve their goals in a nurturing, homelike atmosphere. (A few people have inquired about cash donations, and any cash or checks for ALIVE! House at the event would certainly be much appreciated.) Established in 1972 as a shelter for women and families, ALIVE! House is the oldest continuously operated shelter for women in the Commonwealth of Virginia. They provide shelter, safety, food, guidance, emotional support, counseling, job help, and hope.

Drinking Liberally: An informal, inclusive weekly Democratic drinking club. Raise your spirits while you raise your glass, and share ideas while you share a pitcher. Drinking Liberally gives like-minded, left-leaning individuals a place to talk politics. You don't need to be a policy expert and this isn't a book club - just come and learn from peers, trade jokes, vent frustration and hang out in an environment where it's not taboo to talk politics. Find your local drinking liberally group or start your own with a few buddies. Currently there are only two Drinking Liberally groups in all of VA (see below). But it is easy to start your own!
Charlottesville, Virginia Drinking Liberally: Every Tuesday, 7:30 pm, Mellow Mushroom, 1320 West Main Street, Hosted by Jared Jenkins, charlottesville (at) drinkingliberally.org
Richmond, Virginia Drinking Liberally: Every Thursday, 7:30 pm onward Commercial Taphouse, 111 N Robinson St. Hosted by Scott Goode, richmond (at) drinkingliberally.org
RUNNING FOR CHANGE: And if you want a healthier alternative to Drinking Liberally (or want to do some running after your drinking), you can RUN for progressive causes.
