Progressive Democrat Issue 54: VIRGINIA FOCUS
Deeds Files Petition for Recount
State Sen. Creigh Deeds filed a petition Tuesday with the court for a re-count in the race to be Virginia's next attorney general -- the closest statewide election in Virginia history.
The petition sets in motion a series of procedural hearings which will precede what most expect will be a mid-December recount. Deeds trails Bob McDonnell by just 323 votes. Recounts have shifted final vote totals by more than 1,000 votes, and in 2004, a hand recount in the Washington State gubernatorial election shifted the election from the Republican to current Gov. Christine Gregoire. The Republican led by 261 votes before the recount.
"[The recount] is the right thing to do to make sure every vote is fairly and accurately counted, so the people’s votes will be the ultimate determinate of the outcome of this election," Deeds said in a statement. "I will respect the recount process that both Delegate McDonnell and I supported in the General Assembly to ensure that the people’s votes and their best interests are put ahead of partisanship.”
