Mole's Progressive Democrat

The Progressive Democrat Newsletter grew out of the frustration of the 2004 election. Originally intended for New York City progressives, its readership is now national. For anyone who wants to be alerted by email whenever this newsletter is updated (usually weekly), please send your email address and let me know what state you live in (so I can keep track of my readership).

Progressive Democrat Issue 48: CRITICAL NY FOCUS

Fighting for New York, for Democracy and for America:

New York is considered a “safe” blue state, but you and I know that New York is a state we need to fight for. The elections are around the corner. All around the state, Democrats are battling to keep NY State blue. Keep in mind, elections are won at the local level. Voter turnout is determined on the local level. The fate of state legislatures are determined on the local level. So what is going on locally in NY State?

Here are some races I want to highlight. Donations and volunteer hours are CRUCIAL at this time to win these races. Winning these races will help set the Democratic Party up for future wins in 2006, and there are several Congressional races that will be hard fought in NY State. So your effort for these local races can help shift the balance in this nation away from the corrupt, dictatorial, anti-civil rights Republicans to the more honest, more grassroots, more freedom-loving Democratic party.

The other thing I want to emphasize is that Progressives are going to bat for certain candidates. The credibility of the Progressives in NY and the credibility of you and me depend on the left effectively helping candidates to victory. These are the fights that progressives groups like Democracy for America have chosen to fight. Victory in these fights are particularly important for the credibility and the future effectiveness of the Progressive movement. A small donation or a donation of a few hours of time could help establish the credibility of the Progressive grassroots in NY. THAT is what I am asking you to do.

First off, Howard Dean and Democracy for NYC have endorsed Freddy Ferrer for mayor of NYC. Michael Bloomberg is no Bush. We all know that. But he is still a rich man who feels he can buy an election and who has stood shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Tom DeLay to the tune of a $250,000 donation to Tom DeLay’s PAC. By contrast, Ferrer is strictly grassroots and depends on you and me to get him through. I have met Ferrer on the street three times—once in Manhattan and twice in my neighborhood in Brooklyn. He was comfortable and friendly meeting the public, unlike Bloomberg who comes off as totally elitist and disdainful of the common person. If you want to know about Bloomberg’s support of Bush Republicans, please see this diary. If you want to see the disdain Bloomberg has of, for example, Queens, women, Jews and gays, please see this collection of Bloomberg quotes. Please donate money or time to elect Freddy Ferrer.

But NY State is more than NYC! Democracy for America has endorsed the following excellent candidates:

Tony Castro for District Attorney of Westchester County, New York. At the age of nine, Tony immigrated to America from Portugal. His family settled in New Bedford, MA where his father worked as a deep-sea fisherman and his mother as a seamstress in a union shop. He became the first in his family to go to college when he won a scholarship to Harvard University. After law school, Tony took a job in the Bronx District Attorney's office where he worked his way up the ranks. Now, Castro is running to fill the open seat left by Jeanine Pirro for D.A. of Westchester County. In 2001, Castro came within just 6 points of victory when he ran against Pirro, despite being outspent 10-to-1. Let's make sure Castro has the resources to finish what he started and bring change to Westchester County. The election is November 8, 2005.

Ted Nixon for Monroe County, NY Legislature. Ted understands the importance of fiscal responsibility. He plans to build a robust economy that offers greater opportunities and enhances the overall quality of life for Monroe County citizens. Ted believes the County Legislature has become a "good old boys club" run for the benefit of the Republican majority which has led to a fiscal crisis in the county.

Ted O'Brien for Monroe County, NY Legislature. O'Brien understands the importance of transparency and accountability, which is why he is dedicated to ensuring that the government is honest and open about how money is spent. He will maintain an open dialogue with his constituents. Ted is a lifelong resident of Monroe County, and a twenty year resident of Irondequoit. He is a member of the Irondequoit Democratic Committee and a member of the Irondequoit Chamber of Commerce.
