Progressive Democrat Issue 46 NATIONAL ACTION
I want to focus on two things this week.
First, the nomination of yet another unqualified person: Harriet Miers…can’t even call her JUSTICE Miers because she has NEVER BEEN A JUDGE! I actually know a Republican in NYC who, because she actually has been a state Supreme Court Justice, is more qualified than Miers. THINK about that. I PERSONALLY know someone MORE QUALIFIED than Miers for Supreme Court Justice.

President Bush nominated White House counsel Harriett Miers to replace our moderate swing vote, the Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. I gotta say, O’Connor was NOT a moderate in my book. But compared with the Republican party today, she was moderate. So what about Miers?
Remember Alberto Gonzales, the pro-torture appointee for Attorney General? Alberto Gonzales was recommended to Bush as counsel in the Texas Governorship by Harriet Miers, who replaced Gonzales as White House counsel. Doesn’t this sound like yet another circle of cronyism like the whole Michael Brown appointment to FEMA? Cronyism with torture thrown in!
Miers is known for her personal loyalty to Bush. But she has NEVER been a judge before in her entire life. She has NEVER been a judge, but now Bush wants to appoint her straight up to Supreme Court Justice. It is as if your boss promoted someone with NO experience to be a Vice President of your Company. She was formerly his personal lawyer in Texas with a law firm known for its corporate favoritism, lobbyists connections, shady dealings and large contributions to Bush. Her recent positions as White House staff secretary, counsel and public policy, put her at every decision and liability of this administration.
She was at Crawford for the August 6 briefing memo on Osama Bin Laden and led the suppression of evidence, and some say shredding, of the W’s National Guard evidence prior to the 2000 run. Like a Forest Gump character at every scene of history, and possible crime. So she was RIGHT THERE in Bush’s presence when Bush dropped the ball on 9/11!
Harriet also said that Bush is the most brilliant man she has ever met.
According to Nathan Hecht, now a Texas Supreme Court justice, Miers shared with him in 1980 that life begins at conception and that abortion is "taking a life." Will she put the Constitution before her God? Or will she do Bush’s bidding for his vision of God and country?
Miers, like John Roberts, is a Bush darling and shill of the corporate world. As this country sinks deeper into debt, this administration is selling off everything to the highest bidder, the poor, the small businesses, the environment, and our future generations.
Democrats need to use the confirmation hearings to show where they differ on important issues such as restraining the Executive Branch and limiting government intrusion in individual’s lives. It is inevitable that the party in power will be able to select the Supreme Court justices, but this also means they must take responsibility for having control of all three branches of government.
The Miers nomination provides one political advantage. Even before her nomination, the cover of Newsweek carries the headline, "The GOP: A Mounting Crisis of Competence & Cronyism." The Miers nomination leaves them open to continued criticism on both counts.

If President Bush's goal is to shift the Supreme Court in a more conservative direction, his nomination of White House counsel Harriet Miers yesterday signaled a desire to do so as quietly as possible.
Bush has nominated his Texas crony as a stealth appointment to the Supreme Court. Although the Senate will be hard-pressed to discover Harriet Miers's positions on the critical issues, she does have a long record of loyalty to Bush, whom she calls "the most brilliant man I ever met." Bush undoubtedly knows where she stands - and it doesn't appear to be on the side of civil liberties.

My Second action for the week, is a continuation of last week, because it is REALLY important…maybe one of the MOST important issues of the year:
Well, we now know that it was I. Lewis Libby, Dick Cheney’s chief of staff, who leaked Plame’s name to Bob “the traitor” Novak. Yet I don’t see much about this in the news (other than on NY1 and in the NY Times). Even on Daily Kos it is more about attacking Obama and Clinton than publicizing the fact that the Vice President’s chief of staff committed treason by leaking the name of a covert agent to the press. Let me repeat that:
THE VICE PRESIDENT’S CHIEF OF STAFF COMMITTED TREASON!
And no one seems to care much. This should be the number one story on everyone’s lips.
THE VICE PRESIDENT’S CHIEF OF STAFF COMMITTED TREASON!

Please read this and start up your letters to Congress and to the media demanding that:
1. I. Lewis Libby, Dick Cheney’s chief of staff, be fired, arrested and tried for treason
2. An independent investigation is initiated investigating Dick Cheney’s role in this treason
3. Bob Novak be fired and arrested and tried for treason
Bill Clinton was vilified and impeached by the Republicans because he lied about getting sex. But if Libby, Novak and maybe Dick Cheney commit treason, it’s okay? What is becoming of America???
