Mole's Progressive Democrat

The Progressive Democrat Newsletter grew out of the frustration of the 2004 election. Originally intended for New York City progressives, its readership is now national. For anyone who wants to be alerted by email whenever this newsletter is updated (usually weekly), please send your email address and let me know what state you live in (so I can keep track of my readership).

Progressive Democrat Issue 38: NATIONAL ACTION

    From Mainstreet Moms Operation Blue:

SEPTEMBER IS IT; LAST CHANCE TO OPT OUT

Your last chance to participate in the Leave My Child Alone campaign and opt your child out of the backdoor draft. The No Child Left Behind Act actually requires high schools to turn over student information to military recruiters. Your child will be targeted by military recruiters if you don't act now to opt your child out.

Buried deep within the No Child Left Behind Act is a provision that requires public high schools to hand over private student information to military recruiters. The purpose of this invasion of family privacy is to allow minor students to be recruited at home by telephone calls, mail and personal visits. If a school does not comply, it risks losing vital federal education funds. The only way to keep your children’s contact information from military recruiters, is to submit an "opt-out" letter in writing to your school district’s superintendent. Mainstreet Moms and other groups are pushing hard to publicize this "opt-out" option. Please go to the Leave My Child Alone website to opt-out your child or to help spread the word to your local schools to help children avoid the backdoor-draft tactics of military recruiters who are desperate to meet their quotas. We don't want more children dying for Bush's stupid Iraq War.
